Highly fatal canine leptospirosis emerged in urban Sydney dogs in 2017, and serovar Copenhageni, against which a registered monovalent vaccine is available, was predominant until 2020. This study was conducted to (1) determine serological characteristics of canine leptospirosis in New South Wales (NSW) between 2021 and 2023; (2) describe the geospatial distribution of leptospirosis; and (3) evaluate if clinicopathological abnormalities and outcome differ between the dominant infecting serovars, Copenhageni versus Australis. Cases were identified through referral or direct veterinarian contact and included if clinical and clinicopathological findings confirmed leptospirosis. Between 2021 and 2023 leptospirosis was confirmed in 61 dogs in NSW. In 2022 two major outbreaks occurred in the local government areas of Shoalhaven (n = 23) and Lake Macquarie (n = 7). The most common serovar identified by microscopic agglutination test (MAT) was Australis (n = 23) followed by Copenhageni (n = 8), Pomona (n = 2), Robinsoni (n = 2) and Bratislava (n = 1). In 16/18 cases from Shoalhaven in which serological results were available, serovar Australis was identified. Dogs infected with serovar Copenhageni were significantly (P < 0.05) more likely to have hepatic involvement with significantly higher liver enzyme activities, bilirubin concentration and icterus, whereas dogs with serovar Australis were significantly (P < 0.01) more likely to have glucosuria. Overall case fatality rate was 40% and was not different between infecting serovars. There are regional differences of infecting serovars with distinct leptospirosis hotspots, and differences in clinicopathological findings. The apparent emergence of serovar Australis highlights the need for bi‐ or multivalent vaccines and ongoing case surveillance of causal serovars is needed. Strongyloides stercoralis is parasite affecting both humans and dogs and is most prevalent in tropical and subtropical areas of Australia. This case report describes two dogs from a household in Sydney, New South Wales, one with chronic gastrointestinal signs and the other who was asymptomatic who were subsequently diagnosed with S. stercoralis. Diagnosis can be challenging in humans and dogs due to intermittent shedding and low worm burdens and in this case the symptomatic dog had Strongyloides spp. rhabitiform larvae detected on a direct faecal smear and PCR, the asymptomatic dog on PCR only. Obtained sequences from the symptomatic dog confirmed the presence of the S. stercoralis clade affecting both dogs and humans. Infection does not respond to commonly used deworming drugs for dogs. Treatment in both cases was undertaken using off‐label doses of ivermectin and follow‐up PCR testing was negative. In 2017, highly fatal canine leptospirosis emerged in Sydney, Australia. Based on results of microscopic agglutination testing (MAT), serovar Copenhageni appeared to be the most common causative serovar. Prior to this, no clinical cases had been reported since 1976. In a serosurvey of healthy dogs in Australian shelters in 2004, 2.4% of 431 New South Wales dogs had serological evidence of exposure to Copenhageni, the most prevalent serovar. The aim of this study was to estimate the current prevalence of Leptospira exposure and associated serovars in healthy Sydney dogs, previously unvaccinated against Leptospira. Serum samples from 411 healthy dogs in leptospirosis hotspots and neighbouring suburbs were collected before vaccination. MAT for 23 serovars was performed at the WHO Leptospirosis Reference Laboratory in Queensland, Australia. The overall seroprevalence was 4.1% (17/411) with low titres (1/50–1/200) detected. Eleven dogs were from known leptospirosis hotspots. Eight dogs were known to hunt rodents. One dog had been in contact with a leptospirosis positive dog 1 year prior. Serovar Topaz was the most prevalent serovar (n = 5) followed by serovars Australis (n = 4), Copenhageni (n = 4), Djasiman (n = 2), Cynopteri (n = 1), Javanica (n = 1), Medanensis (n = 1), and Pomona (n = 1). In conclusion, serological evidence of exposure of dogs in Sydney to Leptospira is low, but apparently has increased since 2004. Positive titres to serovars not previously reported to cause disease in dogs could be due to low virulence of those serovars or cross‐reactivity with other serovars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report a unique bio-catalytic nanoparticle shaping (BNS) method for preparing a variety of mesoscopic particles by a facile process. For example, the BNS method affords mesoscopic QD assembly dispersions. Large-size sedimentations (>1 μm) of QDs are first formed using oligo-L-lysine linkers. These then undergo controlled enzymatic cleavage of the linkers using trypsin, which surprisingly leads to mesoscopic particles about 84 nm in size with a narrow size distribution. A detailed mechanism of the BNS method is investigated using tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (TCPP), instead of QDs, as a probe molecule. Interestingly, the BNS method can also be applied to other combinations of enzymes and enzymatically degradable linkers, such as hyaluronidase with hyaluronan. As a potential application, the mesoscopic particles of QDs and oligo-lysine exhibit their ability to act as a drug delivery carrier originating from the features of both QDs and oligo-lysine. The BNS method demonstrates the universality and versatility of preparing mesoscopic particles and opens new doors for studying QD assemblies and molecular-based mesoscopic particles.

Background: The literature on therapeutic landscapes highlights that the university campus landscape has restorative effects on students. This deserves more scholarly attention since mental health has become an important issue among university students. However, existing empirical studies have revealed mixed evidence with little attention to the heterogeneity across the design and, therefore, the potential therapeutic effects across different landscapes., Method: This research examined how 13 landscape sites on a university campus might be differentially related to student well-being. These sites were identified from a variety of sources (campus design documents, photos used in the university's social media posts, and interviews with a small group of students) to represent a comprehensive list of places that students might visit. The data was collected in a large online survey of a Chinese university (n = 2,528). We asked about students' use of individual landscape sites and the associated motivations for visits, and measured well-being using a perceived stress scale and overall evaluation of the happiness level. Bivariate analysis was used to explore the zero-order associations between landscape use and well-being. OLS (for stress) and logistic regressions (for happiness) were conducted to further evaluate the associations after controlling the student background variables and potential correlations of uses across different landscapes., Results: Among 13 landscape sites, four sites had significant positive associations with either or both measures of well-being after controlling for the student characteristics and use of the other landscape sites. There was also an additive benefit of visiting more landscapes. Compared to those who did not frequently visit any of the sites, well-being had a significant stepwise increase among those who frequently visited one or two and more sites. One site that was significantly related to both measures of well-being only offered distant views of landscapes, but it was right next to the study areas., Conclusions: This study demonstrates the heterogeneity of restorative effects across different landscapes on campus. The findings suggest that effective landscape design that aims to promote student well-being should be placed close to stressors (i.e., where they study), and between where they study and live to offer students opportunities to break from the common routines and to relax. Semiconductor nanocrystals are promising optoelectronic materials. Understanding their anisotropic photoluminescence is fundamental for developing quantum-dot-based devices such as light-emitting diodes, solar cells, and polarized single-photon sources. In this study, we experimentally and theoretically investigate the photoluminescence anisotropy of CdSe semiconductor nanocrystals with various shapes, including plates, rods, and spheres, with either wurtzite or zincblende structures. We use defocused wide-field microscopy to visualize the emission dipole orientation and find that spheres, rods, and plates exhibit the optical properties of 2D, 1D, and 2D emission dipoles, respectively. We rationalize the seemingly counterintuitive observation that despite having similar aspect ratios (width/length), rods and long nanoplatelets exhibit different defocused emission patterns by considering valence band structures calculated using multiband effective mass theory and the dielectric effect. The principles are extended to provide general relationships that can be used to tune the emission dipole orientation for different materials, crystalline structures, and shapes.

Indium nitride (InN) is an air stable III-V semiconductor with a small band gap of 0.7 eV and as such is of interest as a key material in near-infrared (NIR) LEDs, photodetectors, and multijunction solar cells. Conventionally, InN has been synthesized through physical deposition techniques which involve extreme temperatures and harsh conditions and yield nonluminescent materials. Here we report a new low temperature, solution-based synthetic route to colloidal InN nanocrystals that produces phase-pure wurtzite InN with tunable photoluminescence. The luminescence is attributed to the presence of InN surface states.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic joint disease that causes disability and pain. The osteochondral interface is a gradient tissue region that plays a significant role in maintaining joint health. It has been shown that during OA, increased neoangiogenesis creates porous channels at the osteochondral interface allowing the transport of molecules related to OA. Importantly, the connection between these porous channels and the early stages of OA development is still not fully understood. Microcomputed tomography (microCT) offers the ability to image the porous channels at the osteochondral interface, however, a contrast agent is necessary to delineate the different X-ray attenuations of the tissues. In this study BaYbF 5 -SiO 2 nanoparticles are synthesized and optimized as a microCT contrast agent to obtain an appropriate contrast attenuation for subsequent segmentation of structures of interest, that is, porous channels, and mouse subchondral bone. For this purpose, BaYbF 5 nanoparticles were synthesized and coated with a biocompatible silica shell (SiO 2 ). The optimized BaYbF 5 -SiO 2 27 nm nanoparticles exhibited the highest average microCT attenuation among the biocompatible nanoparticles tested. The BaYbF 5 -SiO 2 27 nm nanoparticles increased the mean X-ray attenuation of structures of interest, for example, porous channel models and mouse subchondral bone. The BaYbF 5 -SiO 2 contrast attenuation was steady after diffusion into mouse subchondral bone. In this study, we obtained for the first time, the average microCT attenuation of the BaYbF 5 -SiO 2 nanoparticles into porous channel models and mouse subchondral bone. Human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated cervical cancer is a leading cause of cancer deaths in women. Here we present an integrated multi-omic analysis of 643 cervical squamous cell carcinomas (CSCC, the most common histological variant of cervical cancer), representing patient populations from the USA, Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa and identify two CSCC subtypes (C1 and C2) with differing prognosis. C1 and C2 tumours can be driven by either of the two most common HPV types in cervical cancer (16 and 18) and while HPV16 and HPV18 are overrepresented among C1 and C2 tumours respectively, the prognostic difference between groups is not due to HPV type. C2 tumours, which comprise approximately 20% of CSCCs across these cohorts, display distinct genomic alterations, including loss or mutation of the STK11 tumour suppressor gene, increased expression of several immune checkpoint genes and differences in the tumour immune microenvironment that may explain the shorter survival associated with this group. An outbreak of canine leptospirosis commenced in Sydney, Australia in 2017. The aim of this retrospective study was to determine if clusters of leptospirosis occurred during this outbreak, and if these were associated with host factors, to assist investigation of the drivers of emerging leptospirosis at this location. Within the City of Sydney local government area, 13 cases were reported during the outbreak. Administrative data on the canine population were collected and mapped. Clusters of leptospirosis cases were detected using a retrospective space-time analysis and a discrete Poisson probability statistical model. Sydney dog population registration [55.6%, 95% confidence interval (CI) 51.8-58.1%] was lower than the Australian national average (80%). The distribution of dog types, based on the United Kennel Club standards, was significantly (p < .0001) different to that of the national profile: there was a distinct preference in Sydney for companion dogs. The age distribution of dogs in Sydney did not reflect a typical right-skewed curve; instead, a relatively uniform distribution was observed between the age group of 1 to 8 years. A primary disease cluster (radius 1.1 km) in the eastern area of the Sydney City Council was identified (4 cases observed between 24 May and 9 August 2019 vs. 0.10 cases expected), p = .0450. When adjusted for the age, breed type and sex distribution of the population, similar clusters were identified; in the case of age-adjustment, the spatiotemporal cluster identified was larger and of longer duration (seven cases observed between 28 June and 11 November 2019 versus 0.34 cases expected), p = .0025. The presence of clusters of canine leptospirosis in the City of Sydney during this outbreak, which persisted after adjustment for demographics (age, sex, breed type), suggest that environmental factors - rather than host or pathogen factors - might be responsible for the emergence of leptospirosis. Microscopic electric fields govern the majority of elementary excitations in condensed matter and drive electronics at frequencies approaching the Terahertz (THz) regime. However, only few imaging schemes are able to resolve sub-wavelength fields in the THz range, such as scanning-probe techniques, electro-optic sampling, and ultrafast electron microscopy. Still, intrinsic constraints on sample geometry, acquisition speed and field strength limit their applicability. Here, we harness the quantum-confined Stark-effect to encode ultrafast electric near-fields into colloidal quantum dot luminescence. Our approach, termed Quantum-probe Field Microscopy (QFIM), combines far-field imaging of visible photons with phase-resolved sampling of electric waveforms. By capturing ultrafast movies, we spatio-temporally resolve a Terahertz resonance inside a bowtie antenna and unveil the propagation of a Terahertz waveguide excitation deeply in the sub-wavelength regime. Across their lives, biological sensors maintain near-constant functional outputs despite countless exogenous and endogenous perturbations. This sensory homeostasis is the product of multiple dynamic equilibria, the breakdown of which contributes to age-related decline. The mechanisms of homeostatic maintenance, however, are still poorly understood. The ears of vertebrates and insects are characterized by exquisite sensitivities but also by marked functional vulnerabilities. Being under the permanent load of thermal and acoustic noise, auditory transducer channels exemplify the homeostatic challenge. We show that (1) NompC-dependent mechanotransducers in the ear of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster undergo continual replacement with estimated turnover times of 9.1 hr; (2) a de novo synthesis of NompC can restore transducer function in the adult ears of congenitally hearing-impaired flies; (3) key components of the auditory transduction chain, including NompC, are under activity-dependent transcriptional control, likely forming a transducer-operated mechanosensory gain control system that extends beyond hearing organs., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing interests., (© 2021 The Authors.)

We introduce xanthate-functionalized poly(cyclic imino ethers)s (PCIEs), specifically poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) and poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazine) given their stealth characteristics, as an attractive alternative to conventional thiol-based ligands for the synthesis of highly monodisperse and fluorescent gold nanoclusters (AuNCs). The xanthate in the PCIEs interacts with Au ions, acting as a well-controlled template for the direct formation of PCIE-AuNCs. This method yields red-emitting AuNCs with a narrow emission peak (λ em = 645 nm), good quantum yield (4.3-4.8%), long fluorescence decay time (∼722-844 ns), and unprecedented product yield (>98%). The PCIE-AuNCs exhibit long-term colloidal stability, biocompatibility, and antifouling properties, enabling a prolonged blood circulation, lower nonspecific accumulation in major organs, and better renal clearance when compared with AuNCs without polymer coating. The advances made here in the synthesis of metal nanoclusters using xanthate-functionalized PCIEs could propel the production of highly monodisperse, biocompatible, and renally clearable nanoprobes in large-scale for different theranostic applications.

We report on the colloidal stability of nanoparticles with alkanethiol shells in apolar solvents. Small-angle X-ray scattering and molecular dynamics simulations were used to characterize the interaction between nanoparticles in linear alkane solvents ranging from hexane to hexadecane, including 4 nm gold cores with hexadecanethiol shells and 6 nm cadmium selenide cores with octadecanethiol shells. We find that the agglomeration is enthalpically driven and that, contrary to what one would expect from classical colloid theory, the temperature at which the particles agglomerate increases with increasing solvent chain length. We demonstrate that the inverted trend correlates with the temperatures at which the ligands order in the different solvents and show that the inversion is due to a combination of enthalpic and entropic effects that enhance the stability of the ordered ligand state as the solvent length increases. We also explain why cyclohexane is a better solvent than hexadecane despite the two having very similar solvation parameters.

Indium phosphide quantum dots (QDs) have drawn attention as alternatives to cadmium- and lead-based QDs that are currently used as phosphors in lamps and displays. The main drawbacks of InP QDs are, in general, a lower photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), a decreased color purity, and poor chemical stability. In this research, we attempted to increase the PLQY and stability of indium phosphide QDs by developing lattice matched InP/MgSe core-shell nanoheterostructures. The choice of MgSe comes from the fact that, in theory, it has a near-perfect lattice match with InP, provided MgSe is grown in the zinc blende crystal structure, which can be achieved by alloying with zinc. To retain lattice matching, we used Zn in both the core and shell and we fabricated InZnP/Zn x Mg 1- x Se core/shell QDs. To identify the most suitable conditions for the shell growth, we first developed a synthesis route to Zn x Mg 1- x Se nanocrystals (NCs) wherein Mg is effectively incorporated. Our optimized procedure was employed for the successful growth of Zn x Mg 1- x Se shells around In(Zn)P QDs. The corresponding core/shell systems exhibit PLQYs higher than those of the starting In(Zn)P QDs and, more importantly, a higher color purity upon increasing the Mg content. Core/shell nanocrystals with a graded interface between core and shell exhibit improved optoelectronic properties compared with particles with an abrupt, sharp interface. Material gradients mitigate interfacial defects and define the shape of the confinement potential. So far, few works exist that allow to quantify the width of the gradient. In this study, ZnSe/CdS nanocrystals with graded shells made at different temperatures are characterized using extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and Raman spectroscopies. The average coordination number of the probed element with respect to the two possible counterions is fit to a simple, geometric model. It is shown that at the lower temperature limit for shell growth (260 °C), substantial interfacial alloying can be attributed mainly to cation migration. At higher temperature (290 °C), strain minimization leads to atomic ordering of the metal ions and an anomalously low degree of phase mixing.

Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) allow great flexibility in the design of optoelectronic devices, thanks to their size-dependent optical and electronic properties and the possibility to fabricate thin films with solution-based processing. In particular, in QD-based heterojunctions, the band gap of both components can be controlled by varying the size of the QDs. However, control over the band alignment between the two materials is required to tune the dynamics of carrier transfer across a heterostructure. We demonstrate that ligand exchange strategies can be used to control the band alignment of PbSe and CdSe QDs in a mixed QD solid, shifting it from a type-I to a type-II alignment. The change in alignment is observed in both spectroelectrochemical and transient absorption measurements, leading to a change in the energy of the conduction band edges in the two materials and in the direction of electron transfer upon photoexcitation. In this work, we systematically study the spectroelectrochemical response of CdSe quantum dots (QDs), CdSe/CdS core/shell QDs with varying CdS shell thicknesses, and CdSe/CdS/ZnS core/shell/shell QDs in order to elucidate the influence of localized surface trap states on the optoelectronic properties. By correlating the differential absorbance and the photoluminescence upon electrochemically raising the Fermi level, we reveal that trap states near the conduction band (CB) edge give rise to nonradiative recombination pathways regardless of the CdS shell thickness, evidenced by quenching of the photoluminescence before the CB edge is populated with electrons. This points in the direction of shallow trap states localized on the CdS shell surface that give rise to nonradiative recombination pathways. We suggest that these shallow trap states reduce the quantum yield because of enhanced hole trapping when the Fermi level is raised electrochemically. In transient absorption (TA) measurements on Cd-chalcogenide quantum dots (QDs), the presence of a band-edge (BE) bleach signal is commonly attributed entirely to conduction-band electrons in the 1S(e) state, neglecting contributions from BE holes. While this has been the accepted view for more than 20 years, and has often been used to distinguish electron and hole kinetics, the reason for the absence of a hole contribution to the BE-bleach has remained unclear. Here, we show with three independent experiments that holes do in fact have a significant impact on the BE-bleach of well-passivated Cd-chalcogenide QD samples. Transient absorption experiments on high photoluminescence quantum yield CdSe/CdS/ZnS core-shell-shell QDs clearly show an increase of the band-edge bleach as holes cool down to the band edge. The relative contribution of electron-to-hole bleach is 2:1, as predicted by theory. The same measurements on core-only CdSe QDs with a lower quantum yield do not show a contribution of holes to the band-edge bleach. We assign the lack of hole bleach to the presence of ultrafast hole trapping in samples with insufficient passivation of the QD surface. In addition, we show measurements of optical gain in core-shell-shell QD solutions, providing clear evidence of a significant hole contribution to the BE transient absorption signal. Finally, we present spectroelectrochemical measurements on CdTe QDs films, showing the presence of a BE-bleach for both electron and hole injections. The presence of a contribution of holes to the bleach in passivated Cd-chalcogenides QDs bears important implications for quantitative studies on optical gain as well as for TA determinations of carrier dynamics.

Urban industrialization has caused severe land contamination at hundreds of thousands of sites in cities all around the world, posing a serious health risk to millions of people. Many contaminated brownfield sites are being left abandoned due to the high cost of remediation. Traditional physical and chemical remediation technologies also require high energy and resource input, and can result in loss of land functionality and cause secondary pollution. Nature-based solutions (NBS) including phytoremediation and conversion of brownfield sites to public greenspaces, holds much promise in maximizing a sustainable urban renaissance. NBS is an umbrella concept that can be used to capture nature based, cost effective and eco-friendly treatment technologies, as well as redevelopment strategies that are socially inclusive, economically viable, and with good public acceptance. The NBS concept is novel and in urgent need of new research to better understand the pros and cons, and to enhance its practicality. The processes that govern radiative recombination in ternary CuInS 2 (CIS) nanocrystals (NCs) have been heavily debated, but recently, several research groups have come to the same conclusion that a photoexcited electron recombines with a localized hole on a Cu-related trap state. Furthermore, it has been observed that single CIS NCs display narrower photoluminescence (PL) line widths than the ensemble, which led to the conclusion that within the ensemble there is a distribution of Cu-related trap states responsible for PL. In this work, we probe this trap-state distribution with in situ photoluminescence spectroelectrochemistry. We find that Cu 2+ states result in individual "dark" nanocrystals, whereas Cu + states result in "bright" NCs. Furthermore, we show that we can tune the PL position, intensity, and line width in a cyclic fashion by injecting or removing electrons from the trap-state distribution, thereby converting a subset of "dark" Cu 2+ containing NCs into "bright" Cu + containing NCs and vice versa. The electrochemical injection of electrons results in brightening, broadening, and a red shift of the PL, in line with the activation of a broad distribution of "dark" NCs (Cu 2+ states) into "bright" NCs (Cu + states) and a rise of the Fermi level within the ensemble trap-state distribution. The opposite trend is observed for electrochemical oxidation of Cu + states into Cu 2+ . Our work shows that there is a direct correlation between the line width of the ensemble Cu + /Cu 2+ trap-state distribution and the characteristic broad-band PL feature of CIS NCs and between Cu 2+ cations in the photoexcited state (bright) and in the electrochemically oxidized ground state (dark).

InP and InZnP colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are promising materials for application in light-emitting devices, transistors, photovoltaics, and photocatalytic cells. In addition to possessing an appropriate bandgap, high absorption coefficient, and high bulk carrier mobilities, the intrinsic toxicity of InP and InZnP is much lower than for competing QDs that contain Cd or Pb-providing a potentially safer commercial product. However, compared to other colloidal QDs, InP QDs remain sparsely used in devices and their electronic transport properties are largely unexplored. Here, we use time-resolved microwave conductivity measurements to study charge transport in films of InP and InZnP colloidal quantum dots capped with a variety of short ligands. We find that transport in InP QDs is dominated by trapping effects, which are mitigated in InZnP QDs. We improve charge carrier mobilities with a range of ligand-exchange treatments and for the best treatments reach mobilities and lifetimes on par with those of PbS QD films used in efficient solar cells. To demonstrate the device-grade quality of these films, we construct solar cells based on InP & InZnP QDs with power conversion efficiencies of 0.65 and 1.2%, respectively. Energy levels in the band gap arising from surface states can dominate the optical and electronic properties of semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dots (QDs). Recent theoretical work has predicted that such trap states in II-VI and III-V QDs arise only from two-coordinated anions on the QD surface, offering the hypothesis that Lewis acid (Z-type) ligands should be able to completely passivate these anionic trap states. In this work, we provide experimental support for this hypothesis by demonstrating that Z-type ligation is the primary cause of PL QY increase when passivating undercoordinated CdTe QDs with various metal salts. Optimized treatments with InCl 3 or CdCl 2 afford a near-unity (>90%) photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY), whereas other metal halogen or carboxylate salts provide a smaller increase in PL QY as a result of weaker binding or steric repulsion. The addition of non-Lewis acidic ligands (amines, alkylammonium chlorides) systematically gives a much smaller but non-negligible increase in the PL QY. We discuss possible reasons for this result, which points toward a more complex and dynamic QD surface. Finally we show that Z-type metal halide ligand treatments also lead to a strong increase in the PL QY of CdSe, CdS, and InP QDs and can increase the efficiency of sintered CdTe solar cells. These results show that surface anions are the dominant source of trap states in II-VI and III-V QDs and that passivation with Lewis acidic Z-type ligands is a general strategy to fix those traps. Our work also provides a method to tune the PL QY of QD samples from nearly zero up to near-unity values, without the need to grow epitaxial shells.

The photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield of semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) is hampered by in-gap trap states due to dangling orbitals on the surface of the nanocrystals. While crucial for the rational design of nanocrystals, the understanding of the exact origin of trap states remains limited. Here, we treat CdTe nanocrystal films with different metal chloride salts and we study the effect on their optical properties with in situ spectroelectrochemistry, recording both changes in absorption and photoluminescence. For untreated CdTe NC films we observe a strong increase in the PL intensity as the Fermi-level is raised electrochemically and trap states in the bandgap become occupied with electrons. Upon passivation of these in-gap states we observe an increase in the steady state PL and, for the best treatments, we observe that the PL no longer depends on the position of the Fermi level in the band gap, demonstrating the effective removal of trap states. The most effective treatment is obtained for Z-type passivation with CdCl 2 , for which the steady state PL increased by a factor 40 and the PL intensity became nearly unaffected by the applied potential. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy measurements show that treatment with ZnCl 2 mainly leads to X-type passivation with chloride ions, which increased the PL intensity by a factor four and made the PL less susceptible to modulation by applying a potential with respect to unpassivated nanocrystal films. We elucidate the spectroelectrochemical signatures of trap states within the bandgap and conclude that undercoordinated Te at the surface constitutes the largest contribution to in-gap trap states, but that other surface states that likely originate on Cd atoms should also be considered., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

Inorganic nanoparticle cores are often coated with organic ligands to render them dispersible in apolar solvents. However, the effect of the ligand shell on the colloidal stability of the overall hybrid particle is not fully understood. In particular, it is not known how the length of an apolar alkyl ligand chain affects the stability of a nanoparticle dispersion against agglomeration. Here, small-angle X-ray scattering and molecular dynamics simulations have been used to study the interactions between gold nanoparticles and between cadmium selenide nanoparticles passivated by alkanethiol ligands with 12-18 carbons in the solvent decane. We find that increasing the ligand length increases colloidal stability in the core-dominated regime but decreases it in the ligand-dominated regime. This unexpected inversion is connected to the transition from ligand-dominated to core-dominated agglomeration when the core diameter increases at constant ligand length. Our results provide a microscopic picture of the forces that determine the colloidal stability of apolar nanoparticles and explain why classical colloid theory fails.

The formation of semiconductor nanocrystals by hot-injection synthesis follows complex reaction mechanisms that are not yet fully understood. In particular the occurrence of intermediate species indicated by sharp, stationary spectral lines poses an important deviation from the predictions of classical nucleation theory. We show that trace amounts of water and other protic additives strongly impact the structure of these reaction intermediates, forming either coordination polymers under dry conditions or small clusters in the presence of moisture. These intermediates bind monomer during the initial nucleation phase. The structure of the intermediate determines the monomer release rate, either continuously or in a rapid dissolution event, and hence controls the reaction kinetics. From this we propose a kinetic model that allows us to predict secondary nucleation events. By directing the type of intermediate formed, protic additives provide a lever to manipulate this equilibrium and control nanocrystal synthesis in a rational fashion.

Indium antimonide (InSb) quantum dots (QDs) have unique and interesting photophysical properties, but widespread experimentation with InSb QDs is lacking due to the difficulty in synthesizing this material. The key experimental challenge in fabricating InSb QDs is preparing a suitable Sb-precursor in the correct oxidation state that reacts with the In-precursor in a controllable manner. Here, we review and discuss the synthetic strategies for making colloidal InSb QDs and present a new reaction scheme yielding small (∼1 nm diameter) InSb QDs. This was accomplished by employing Sb(NMe2)3 as the antimony precursor and by screening different reducing agents that can selectively reduce it to stibine in situ. The released SbH3, subsequently, reacts with In carboxylate to form small InSb clusters. The absorption features are moderately tunable (from 400 nm to 660 nm) by the amount and rate of reductant addition as well as the temperature of injection and subsequent annealing. Optical properties were probed with transient absorption spectroscopy and show complex time and spectral dependencies.
