Abstract

A timber gridshell is a special type of structure that establishes a new framework for lightweight construction. It is possible to create a wide variety of shapes and geometries, therefore guaranteeing an enormous architectural freedom. However, given the variety of forms and the difficulty they can present, it is necessary to use different tools and information to support this complex process. The present paper explores the interaction between the information and the different tools used by architects and engineers during the designing and construction process of an elastic timber gridshell, by presenting a real case study with 42m 2(6,5mx6,5m) after being erected, built with the intent to explore the design and constructive process together with integrated form finding methods. In the paper, both the architect's and the engineer's optimization goals are performed on the same case study. The designing process will be presented and the construction of the elastic gridshell will be described.

Abstract

Given its proximity to the human body, the furniture scale holds a particular potential in grasping the fundamental aesthetic potential of architecture to address its inhabitants by means of spatial ‘gestures’. Likewise, it holds a technical germ in realizing this potential given its immediate tangibility allowing experimentation with the ‘principles’ of architectural construction. In present paper we explore this dual tectonic potential of the furniture scale as an epistemological foundationin architectural education. In this matter, we discuss the conduct of a master-level course where we utilize this potential pedagogically to achieve a critical bridging of architectural theory and practice.

Abstract

A modification of the ARMA model may quantify information about wave load processes derived from response analysis. The modification involves the use of an inverse filter equivalent. The modification is numerically sound and gives reliable modal estimates for both actual and simulated cases. The technique needs further research to establish its reliability and validity through repeated experiments.

Abstract

Defining, developing, and delivering value is critical in integrated design processes (IDP) in building design and its two core design disciplines, architectural design and engineering design. Even so, how values emerge—the creation part itself—is underexposed. Using the seminal four p model from creativity research (person, process, product, and press) as an analytical lens, the paper explores blind spots in two building design cases that we as architects and researchers in creativity and engineering design have been involved in. On this basis, the paper contributes a four-leaf clover model of potential blind spots in collaborative value creation in building design. The model is comprised of value exploration, value negotiation, value formulation, and value manifestation. Design researchers can use the model as a scaffold for new design value theory, and design practitioners can employ it as an instrument to better navigate collaborative building design processes with multiple stakeholders, whose individual value sets may not always be clearly articulated and hence may sometimes collide.
