Abstract

The BICEP3 and BICEP Array polarimeters are small-aperture refracting telescopes located at the South Pole designed to measure primordial gravitational wave signatures in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarization, predicted by inflation. Constraining the inflationary signal requires not only excellent sensitivity, but also careful control of instrumental systematics. Both instruments use antenna-coupled orthogonally polarized detector pairs, and the polarized sky signal is reconstructed by taking the difference in each detector pair. As a result, the differential response between detectors within a pair becomes an important systematic effect we must control. Additionally, mapping the intensity and polarization response in regions away from the main beam can inform how sidelobe levels affect CMB measurements. Extensive calibration measurements are taken in situ every austral summer for control of instrumental systematics and instrument characterisation. In this work, we detail the set of beam calibration measurements that we conduct on the BICEP receivers, from deep measurements of main beam response to polarized beam response and sidelobe mapping. Abstract

The search for the polarized imprint of primordial gravitational waves in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) as direct evidence of cosmic inflation requires exquisite sensitivity and control over systematics. The next-generation CMB-S4 project intends to improve upon current-generation experiments by deploying a significantly greater number of highly-sensitive detectors, combined with refined instrument components based on designs from field-proven instruments. The Precursor Small Aperture Telescope (PreSAT) is envisioned as an early step to this next generation, which will test prototype CMB-S4 components and technologies within an existing BICEP Array receiver, with the aim of enabling full-stack laboratory testing and early risk retirement, along with direct correlation of laboratory component-level performance measurements with deployed system performance. The instrument will utilize new 95/155GHz dichroic dual-linear-polarization prototype detectors developed for CMB-S4, cooled to 100mK via the installation of an adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator, along with a prototype readout chain and prototype optics manufactured with wide-band anti-reflection coatings. The experience gained by integrating, deploying, and calibrating PreSAT will also help inform planning for CMB-S4 small aperture telescope commissioning, calibration, and operations well in advance of the fabrication of CMB-S4 production hardware., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Proc. Abstract

We present an updated design of the 220 GHz microwave kinetic inductance detector (MKID) pixel for SPT-3G+, the next-generation camera for the South Pole Telescope. We show results of the dark testing of a 63-pixel array with mean inductor quality factor $Q_i = 4.8 \times 10^5$, aluminum inductor transition temperature $T_c = 1.19$ K, and kinetic inductance fraction $\alpha_k = 0.32$. We optically characterize both the microstrip-coupled and CPW-coupled resonators, and find both have a spectral response close to prediction with an optical efficiency of $\eta \sim 70\%$. However, we find slightly lower optical response on the lower edge of the band than predicted, with neighboring dark detectors showing more response in this region, though at level consistent with less than 5\% frequency shift relative to the optical detectors. The detectors show polarized response consistent with expectations, with a cross-polar response of $\sim 10\%$ for both detector orientations., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, ASC 2022 proceedings

Abstract

Modeling of the red blood cell (RBC) shape is an integral part of the experimental and computer simulation investigations of light scattering by these cells for fundamental studies as well as diagnostic applications in techniques like cytometry and quantitative phase imaging. In the present work, a comprehensive study of the geometrical characterization of healthy human RBCs using digital holographic microscopy (DHM) and six frequently employed parametric shape models is reported. It is shown that the comparison of the optical phase profiles, and the thickness profiles given by the models with the DHM results gives a better judgment of the appropriateness of the parametric shape models. It is also shown that the RBC parametric models offer a simpler solution to RI-thickness decoupling problem in QPI methods. Results of geometrical characterization of 500 healthy RBCs in terms of volume, surface area (SA), and sphericity index (SI) led to the classification of the parametric models in two categories based on the nature of variation of these quantities with the cell diameter. In light of the variability of the healthy RBC shapes, our findings suggest that the parametric models exhibiting a negative correlation between the SI and the cell diameter would provide more reliable estimates of the RBC parameters in diagnostic applications. Statistical distributions and descriptive statistics of the RBC volume, SA and SI serve as a guide for the assessment of the capability of the studied parametric models to give a reliable account of the variability of the healthy RBC shape and size., Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures

6. Kinetic Alfvén wave cascade in sub-ion range plasma turbulence

Abstract

Kinetic Alfvén waves (KAWs) are simulated with a 3D particle-in-cell (PIC) code by using the eigenvector relations of density, velocity, electric, and magnetic field fluctuations derived from a two-fluid KAW model. Similar simulations are also performed with a whistler waves setup. The 2D two-fluid eigenvector relations are converted into 3D by using rotation of the reference frame. The initial condition for the simulations is a superposition of several waves at scales slightly larger than the ion skin depth. The nonlinear interactions produce a transfer of energy to smaller scales. The magnetic field perturbation ratios, velocity perturbation, and density perturbation ratios are calculated from the simulation at higher wavenumbers and compared with the analytically expected ratios for KAWs and whistler waves. We find that in both types of simulations, initialized either with an ensemble of KAWs or with whistlers, the observed polarization relations at later times match better with the KAW relations compared to whistlers. This indicates a preference for excitation of KAW fluctuations at smaller scales. The power spectrum in the perpendicular direction is calculated, and it shows similar indices as measured in the solar wind power spectrum in the transition (sub-ion) region. The power law extends to smaller scales when a higher ion-to-electron mass ratio is taken. The 2D magnetic power spectrum in magnetic field parallel and perpendicular directions shows typical anisotropy where the power spreads more in the perpendicular direction than in the parallel direction. This study shows that KAWs can explain features of the sub-ion range plasma turbulence in the solar wind.

8. A Forecast for Large Scale Structure Constraints on Horndeski Gravity with Line Intensity Mapping

Abstract

We consider the potential for line intensity mapping (LIM) of the rotational CO(1-0), CO(2-1) and CO(3-2) transitions to detect deviations from General Relativity from $0 < z < 3$ within the framework of a very general class of modified gravity models, called Horndeski theories. Our forecast assumes a multi-tracer analysis separately obtaining information from the matter power spectrum and the first two multipoles of the redshift space distortion power spectrum. To achieve $\pm 0.1$ level constraints on the slope of the kinetic gravity braiding and Planck mass evolution parameters, a mm-wave LIM experiment would need to accumulate $\approx 10^8-10^9$ spectrometer hours, feasible with instruments that could be deployed in the 2030s. Such a measurement would constrain large portions of the remaining parameter space available to Scalar-Tensor modified gravity theories. Abstract

This report summarizes the envisioned research activities as gathered from the Snowmass 2021 CF5 working group concerning Dark Energy and Cosmic Acceleration: Cosmic Dawn and Before. The scientific goals are to study inflation and to search for new physics through precision measurements of relic radiation from the early universe. The envisioned research activities for this decade (2025-35) are constructing and operating major facilities and developing critical enabling capabilities. The major facilities for this decade are the CMB-S4 project, a new Stage-V spectroscopic survey facility, and existing gravitational wave observatories. Enabling capabilities include aligning and investing in theory, computation and model building, and investing in new technologies needed for early universe studies in the following decade (2035+)., Comment: contribution to Snowmass 2021

Abstract

This is a solicited whitepaper for the Snowmass 2021 community planning exercise. The paper focuses on measurements and science with the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). The CMB is foundational to our understanding of modern physics and continues to be a powerful tool driving our understanding of cosmology and particle physics. In this paper, we outline the broad and unique impact of CMB science for the High Energy Cosmic Frontier in the upcoming decade. We also describe the progression of ground-based CMB experiments, which shows that the community is prepared to develop the key capabilities and facilities needed to achieve these transformative CMB measurements., Comment: contribution to Snowmass 2021

Abstract

Next-generation tests of fundamental physics and cosmology using large scale structure require measurements over large volumes of the Universe, including high redshifts inaccessible to present-day surveys. Line intensity mapping, an emerging technique that detects the integrated emission of atomic and molecular lines without resolving sources, can efficiently map cosmic structure over a wide range of redshifts. Observations at millimeter wavelengths detect far-IR emission lines such as CO/[CII], and take advantage of observational and analysis techniques developed by CMB experiments. These measurements can provide constraints with unprecedented precision on the physics of inflation, neutrino masses, light relativistic species, dark energy and modified gravity, and dark matter, among many other science goals. In this white paper we forecast the sensitivity requirements for future ground-based mm-wave intensity mapping experiments to enable transformational cosmological constraints. We outline a staged experimental program to steadily improve sensitivity, and describe the necessary investments in developing detector technology and analysis techniques., Comment: 25 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

Cosmological data in the next decade will be characterized by high-precision, multi-wavelength measurements of thousands of square degrees of the same patches of sky. By performing multi-survey analyses that harness the correlated nature of these datasets, we will gain access to new science, and increase the precision and robustness of science being pursued by each individual survey. However, effective application of such analyses requires a qualitatively new level of investment in cross-survey infrastructure, including simulations, associated modeling, coordination of data sharing, and survey strategy. Abstract

A microscopic theory of molecular motion in classical monatomic liquids, proposed by Glass and Rice [Phy. Rev. 176, 239 (1968)], is revisited and extended to incorporate the dynamic friction in the Brownian description of the atomic diffusion in a mean-time-dependent harmonic force field. A modified, non-Markovian Langevin equation is utilized to derive an equation of motion for the velocity autocorrelation function with time-dependent friction coefficient. Numerical solution of the equation gives an excellent account of the velocity autocorrelation function in LJ liquids, liquid alkali and transition metals over a broad range of density and temperature. Derivation of the equation of motion leads to a self-consistent expression for the time-dependence of friction coefficient. Our results demonstrate that the nature of time-dependence of the friction coefficient changes dramatically with the liquid density. At low and moderate densities, the dynamic friction decays exponentially whereas it increases exponentially at high liquid densities. Abstract

The BICEP/Keck series of experiments target the Cosmic Microwave Background at degree-scale resolution from the South Pole. Over the next few years, the "Stage-3" BICEP Array (BA) telescope will improve the program's frequency coverage and sensitivity to primordial B-mode polarization by an order of magnitude. The first receiver in the array, BA1, began observing at 30/40 GHz in early 2020. The next two receivers, BA2 and BA3, are currently being assembled and will map the southern sky at frequencies ranging from 95 GHz to 150 GHz. Common to all BA receivers is a refractive, on-axis, cryogenic optical design that focuses microwave radiation onto a focal plane populated with antenna-coupled bolometers. High-performance antireflective coatings up to 760 mm in aperture are needed for each element in the optical chain, and must withstand repeated thermal cycles down to 4 K. Here we present the design and fabrication of the 30/40 GHz anti-reflection coatings for the recently deployed BA1 receiver, then discuss laboratory measurements of their reflectance. We review the lamination method for these single- and dual-layer plastic coatings with indices matched to various polyethylene, nylon and alumina optics. We also describe ongoing efforts to optimize coatings for the next BA cryostats, which may inform technological choices for future Small-Aperture Telescopes of the CMB "Stage 4" experiment., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. Superconducting on-chip filter-banks provide a scalable, space saving solution to create imaging spectrometers at millimetre and sub-millimetre wavelengths. We present an easy to realise, lithographed superconducting filter design with a high tolerance to fabrication error. Using a capacitively coupled $\lambda/2$ microstrip resonator to define a narrow ($\lambda/\Delta\lambda = 300$) spectral pass band, the filtered output of a given spectrometer channel directly connects to a Lumped Element Kinetic Inductance Detector (LEKID). We show the tolerance analysis of our design, demonstrating $<11\%$ change in filter quality factor to any one realistic fabrication errors and a full filter-bank efficiency forecast to be 60\% after accounting for fabrication errors and dielectric loss tangent., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. We present details of the design, simulation, and initial test results of prototype detectors for the fourth-generation receiver of the South Pole Telescope (SPT). Optimized for the detection of key secondary anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), SPT-3G+ will measure the temperature and polarization of the mm/sub-mm sky at 220, 285, and 345 GHz, beyond the peak of the CMB blackbody spectrum. The SPT-3G+ focal plane will be populated with microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKIDs), allowing for significantly increased detector density with reduced cryogenic complexity. We present simulation-backed designs for single-color dual-polarization MKID pixels at each SPT-3G+ observation frequency. We further describe design choices made to promote resonator quality and uniformity, enabling us to maximize the available readout bandwidth. Abstract

We perform 2.5D particle-in-cell simulations of decaying turbulence in the presence of a guide (out-of-plane) background magnetic field. The fluctuating magnetic field initially consists of Fourier modes at low wavenumbers (long wavelengths). With time, the electromagnetic energy is converted to plasma kinetic energy (bulk flow+thermal energy) at the rate per unit volume of ${\pp J}\cdot{\pp E}$ for current density ${\pp J}$ and electric field ${\pp E}$. Such decaying turbulence is well known to evolve toward a state with strongly intermittent plasma current. Here we decompose the electric field into components that are irrotational, ${\pp E}_{\rm ir}$, and solenoidal (divergence-free), ${\pp E}_{\rm so}$. ${\pp E}_{\rm ir}$ is associated with charge separation, and ${\pp J}\cdot{\pp E}_{\rm ir}$ is a rate of energy transfer between ions and electrons with little net change in plasma kinetic energy. Therefore, the net rate of conversion of electromagnetic energy to plasma kinetic energy is strongly dominated by ${\pp J}\cdot{\pp E}_{\rm so}$, and for a strong guide magnetic field, this mainly involves the component ${\pp E}_{\rm so,\parallel}$ parallel to the total magnetic field ${\pp B}$. We examine various indicators of the spatial distribution of the energy transfer rate {\bf J$_\parallel\cdot$E$_{so,\parallel}$}, which relates to magnetic reconnection, the best of which are 1) the ratio of the out-of-plane electric field to the in-plane magnetic field, 2) the out-of-plane component of the non-ideal electric field, and 3) the magnitude of the estimate of current helicity.

Abstract

This paper studies cosmic ray (CR) transport in magneto hydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. CR transport is strongly dependent on the properties of the magnetic turbulence. We perform test particle simulations to study the interactions of CR with both total MHD turbulence and decomposed MHD modes. The spatial diffusion coefficients and the pitch angle scattering diffusion coefficients are calculated from the test particle trajectories in turbulence. Our results confirm that the fast modes dominate the CR propagation, whereas Alfv\'en and slow modes are much less efficient and have shown similar pitch angle scattering rates. We investigate the cross field transport on large and small scales. On large/global scales, normal diffusion is observed and the diffusion coefficient is suppressed by $M_A^\zeta$ compared to the parallel diffusion coefficients, with $\zeta$ closer to 4 in Alfv\'en modes than that in total turbulence as theoretically expected. For the CR transport on scales smaller than the turbulence injection scale, both the local and global magnetic reference frames are adopted. Super diffusion is observed on such small scales in all the cases. Particularly, CR transport in Alfv\'en modes show clear Richardson diffusion in the local reference frame. Abstract

Immunotherapy has revolutionized treatment for many hard-to-treat cancers but has yet to produce significant improvement in outcomes for patients with glioblastoma. This reflects the multiple and unique mechanisms of immune evasion and escape in this highly heterogeneous tumor. Glioblastoma engenders profound local and systemic immunosuppression and is remarkably effective at inducing T-cell dysfunction, posing a challenge to any immunotherapy-based approach. To overcome these mechanisms, multiple disparate modes of immune-oriented therapy will be required. However, designing trials that can evaluate these combinatorial approaches requires careful consideration. In this review, we explore the immunotherapy resistance mechanisms that have been encountered to date and how combinatorial approaches may address these. We also describe the unique aspects of trial design in both preclinical and clinical settings and consider endpoints and markers of response best suited for an intervention involving multiple agents.

Abstract

CMB-S4---the next-generation ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment---is set to significantly advance the sensitivity of CMB measurements and enhance our understanding of the origin and evolution of the Universe, from the highest energies at the dawn of time through the growth of structure to the present day. Among the science cases pursued with CMB-S4, the quest for detecting primordial gravitational waves is a central driver of the experimental design. This work details the development of a forecasting framework that includes a power-spectrum-based semi-analytic projection tool, targeted explicitly towards optimizing constraints on the tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r$, in the presence of Galactic foregrounds and gravitational lensing of the CMB. This framework is unique in its direct use of information from the achieved performance of current Stage 2--3 CMB experiments to robustly forecast the science reach of upcoming CMB-polarization endeavors. The methodology allows for rapid iteration over experimental configurations and offers a flexible way to optimize the design of future experiments given a desired scientific goal. To form a closed-loop process, we couple this semi-analytic tool with map-based validation studies, which allow for the injection of additional complexity and verification of our forecasts with several independent analysis methods. We document multiple rounds of forecasts for CMB-S4 using this process and the resulting establishment of the current reference design of the primordial gravitational-wave component of the Stage-4 experiment, optimized to achieve our science goals of detecting primordial gravitational waves for $r > 0.003$ at greater than $5\sigma$, or, in the absence of a detection, of reaching an upper limit of $r < 0.001$ at $95\%$ CL., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures, 9 tables, submitted to ApJ. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1907.04473

Abstract

This paper discusses the science case for a sensitive spectro-polarimetric survey of the microwave sky. Such a survey would provide a tomographic and dynamic census of the three-dimensional distribution of hot gas, velocity flows, early metals, dust, and mass distribution in the entire Hubble volume, exploit CMB temperature and polarisation anisotropies down to fundamental limits, and track energy injection and absorption into the radiation background across cosmic times by measuring spectral distortions of the CMB blackbody emission. In addition to its exceptional capability for cosmology and fundamental physics, such a survey would provide an unprecedented view of microwave emissions at sub-arcminute to few-arcminute angular resolution in hundreds of frequency channels, a data set that would be of immense legacy value for many branches of astrophysics. We propose that this survey be carried out with a large space mission featuring a broad-band polarised imager and a moderate resolution spectro-imager at the focus of a 3.5 m aperture telescope actively cooled to about 8K, complemented with absolutely-calibrated Fourier Transform Spectrometer modules observing at degree-scale angular resolution in the 10–2000 GHz frequency range. We propose two observing modes: a survey mode to map the entire sky as well as a few selected wide fields, and an observatory mode for deeper observations of regions of specific interest.

Abstract

Objectives Kidney transplantation offers patients better quality of life and survival compared with dialysis. The risk of end stage renal disease is higher among ethnic minorities and they experience longer wait times on transplant lists. This inequality stems from a high need for kidney transplantation combined with a low rate of deceased donation among ethnic minority groups. This study aimed to explore the perspectives around living donor kidney transplantation of members of the Sikh and Muslim communities with an aim to develop a digital intervention to overcome any barriers.Design A qualitative descriptive study using in person focus groups.Setting University Teaching Hospital and Transplant Centre.Participants Convenience sampling of participants from the transplant population. Three focus groups were held with 20 participants, all were of South Asian ethnicity belonging to the Sikh and Muslim communities.Methods Interviews were digitally audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim; transcripts were analysed thematically.Results Four themes were identified: (a) religious issues; (b) lack of knowledge within the community; (c) time; (d) cultural identification with transplantation.Conclusions Not only is the information given and when it is delivered important, but also the person giving the information is crucial to enhance consideration of live donor kidney transplantation. Information should be in a first language where possible and overtly align to religious considerations. A more integrated approach to transplantation counselling should be adopted which includes healthcare professionals and credible members of the target cultural group.Trial registration number NCT04327167.

Abstract

Background Acute myocardial infarction complicated by cardiogenic shock (AMI‐CS) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Mechanical circulatory support (MCS) devices increase systemic blood pressure and end organ perfusion while reducing cardiac filling pressures. Methods and Results The National Cardiogenic Shock Initiative (NCT03677180) is a single‐arm, multicenter study. The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of utilizing early MCS with Impella in patients presenting with AMI‐CS. The primary end point was in‐hospital mortality. A total of 406 patients were enrolled at 80 sites between 2016 and 2020. Average age was 64±12 years, 24% were female, 17% had a witnessed out‐of‐hospital cardiac arrest, 27% had in‐hospital cardiac arrest, and 9% were under active cardiopulmonary resuscitation during MCS implantation. Patients presented with a mean systolic blood pressure of 77.2±19.2 mm Hg, 85% of patients were on vasopressors or inotropes, mean lactate was 4.8±3.9 mmol/L and cardiac power output was 0.67±0.29 watts. At 24 hours, mean systolic blood pressure improved to 103.9±17.8 mm Hg, lactate to 2.7±2.8 mmol/L, and cardiac power output to 1.0±1.3 watts. Procedural survival, survival to discharge, survival to 30 days, and survival to 1 year were 99%, 71%, 68%, and 53%, respectively. Conclusions Early use of MCS in AMI‐CS is feasible across varying health care settings and resulted in improvements to early hemodynamics and perfusion. Survival rates to hospital discharge were high. Given the encouraging results from our analysis, randomized clinical trials are warranted to assess the role of utilizing early MCS, using a standardized, multidisciplinary approach.

Abstract

We review and discuss insights on ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities that can play a role in destabilizing solar coronal flux rope structures. For single flux ropes, failed or actual eruptions may result from internal or external kink evolutions, or from torus unstable configurations. We highlight recent findings from 3D magnetic field reconstructions and simulations where kink and torus instabilities play a prominent role. For interacting current systems, we critically discuss different routes to coronal dynamics and global eruptions, due to current channel coalescence or to tilt-kink scenarios. These scenarios involve the presence of two nearby current channels and are clearly distinct from the popular kink or torus instability. Since the solar corona is pervaded with myriads of magnetic loops -- creating interacting flux ropes typified by parallel or antiparallel current channels as exemplified in various recent observational studies -- coalescence or tilt-kink evolutions must be very common for destabilizing adjacent flux rope systems. Since they also evolve on ideal MHD timescales, they may well drive many sympathetic eruptions witnessed in the solar corona. Moreover, they necessarily lead to thin current sheets that are liable to reconnection. We review findings from 2D and 3D MHD simulations for tilt and coalescence evolutions, as well as on particle acceleration aspects derived from computed charged particle motions in tilt-kink disruptions and coalescing flux ropes. Abstract

We describe an on-sky demonstration of a microwave-multiplexing readout system in one of the receivers of the Keck Array, a polarimetry experiment observing the cosmic microwave background at the South Pole. During the austral summer of 2018-2019, we replaced the time-division multiplexing readout system with microwave-multiplexing components including superconducting microwave resonators coupled to radio-frequency superconducting quantum interference devices at the sub-Kelvin focal plane, coaxial-cable plumbing and amplification between room temperature and the cold stages, and a SLAC Microresonator Radio Frequency system for the warm electronics. In the range 5-6 GHz, a single coaxial cable reads out 528 channels. The readout system is coupled to transition-edge sensors, which are in turn coupled to 150-GHz slot-dipole phased-array antennas. Cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments that constrain the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ are now approaching the sensitivity at which delensing---removing the $B$ modes induced by the gravitational lensing of large-scale structure---is necessary. We consider the improvement in delensing that maps of large-scale structure from tomographic line intensity mapping (IM) experiments targeting $2 < z < 10$ could provide. Compared to a nominal baseline of cosmic infrared background and internal delensing at CMB-S4 sensitivity, we find that the addition of high-redshift IM data could improve delensing performance by ~11%. Achieving the requisite sensitivity in the IM data is feasible with next-generation experiments that are now being planned. However, these results are contingent on the ability to measure low-$k$ modes along the line of sight. Abstract

This paper outlines the science case for line-intensity mapping with a space-borne instrument targeting the sub-millimeter (microwaves) to the far-infrared (FIR) wavelength range. Our goal is to observe and characterize the large-scale structure in the Universe from present times to the high redshift Epoch of Reionization. This is essential to constrain the cosmology of our Universe and form a better understanding of various mechanisms that drive galaxy formation and evolution. We argue that the proposed frequency range would make it possible to probe important metal cooling lines such as [CII] up to very high redshift as well as a large number of rotational lines of the CO molecule. These can be used to trace molecular gas and dust evolution and constrain the buildup in both the cosmic star formation rate density and the cosmic infrared background (CIB). Moreover, surveys at the highest frequencies will detect FIR lines which are used as diagnostics of galaxies and AGN. Tomography of these lines over a wide redshift range will enable invaluable measurements of the cosmic expansion history at epochs inaccessible to other methods, competitive constraints on the parameters of the standard model of cosmology, and numerous tests of dark matter, dark energy, modified gravity and inflation. To reach these goals, large-scale structure must be mapped over a wide range in frequency to trace its time evolution over a reasonable fraction of the volume of the observable Universe. In addition, the surveyed area needs to be very large to beat cosmic variance and to probe the largest scales where its easier to separate the astrophysical and cosmological contributions to the observed signal. Abstract

In response to the need for the Astro2020 Decadal Survey to explicitly engage early career astronomers, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine hosted the Early Career Astronomer and Astrophysicist Focus Session (ECFS) on October 8-9, 2018 under the auspices of Committee of Astronomy and Astrophysics. The meeting was attended by fifty six pre-tenure faculty, research scientists, postdoctoral scholars, and senior graduate students, as well as eight former decadal survey committee members, who acted as facilitators. The event was designed to educate early career astronomers about the decadal survey process, to solicit their feedback on the role that early career astronomers should play in Astro2020, and to provide a forum for the discussion of a wide range of topics regarding the astrophysics career path. This white paper presents highlights and themes that emerged during two days of discussion. In Section 1, we discuss concerns that emerged regarding the coming decade and the astrophysics career path, as well as specific recommendations from participants regarding how to address them. We have organized these concerns and suggestions into five broad themes. These include (sequentially): (1) adequately training astronomers in the statistical and computational techniques necessary in an era of "big data", (2) responses to the growth of collaborations and telescopes, (3) concerns about the adequacy of graduate and postdoctoral training, (4) the need for improvements in equity and inclusion in astronomy, and (5) smoothing and facilitating transitions between early career stages. Abstract

In addition to being a probe of Cosmic Dawn and Epoch of Reionization astrophysics, the 21cm line at $z>6$ is also a powerful way to constrain cosmology. Its power derives from several unique capabilities. First, the 21cm line is sensitive to energy injections into the intergalactic medium at high redshifts. It also increases the number of measurable modes compared to existing cosmological probes by orders of magnitude. Many of these modes are on smaller scales than are accessible via the CMB, and moreover have the advantage of being firmly in the linear regime (making them easy to model theoretically). Finally, the 21cm line provides access to redshifts prior to the formation of luminous objects. Together, these features of 21cm cosmology at $z>6$ provide multiple pathways toward precise cosmological constraints. These include the "marginalizing out" of astrophysical effects, the utilization of redshift space distortions, the breaking of CMB degeneracies, the identification of signatures of relative velocities between baryons and dark matter, and the discovery of unexpected signs of physics beyond the $\Lambda$CDM paradigm at high redshifts., Comment: Science white paper submitted to Decadal 2020 survey

Abstract

The Dark Ages are the period between the last scattering of the cosmic microwave background and the appearance of the first luminous sources, spanning approximately 1100 < z < 30. The only known way to measure fluctuations in this era is through the 21-cm line of neutral hydrogen. Such observations have enormous potential for cosmology, because they span a large volume while the fluctuations remain linear even on small scales. Observations of 21-cm fluctuations during this era can therefore constrain fundamental aspects of our Universe, including inflation and any exotic physics of dark matter. Abstract

The epoch of reionization, when photons from early galaxies ionized the intergalactic medium about a billion years after the Big Bang, is the last major phase transition in the Universe's history. Measuring the characteristics of the transition is important for understanding early galaxies and the cosmic web and for modeling dwarf galaxies in the later Universe. But such measurements require probes of the intergalactic medium itself. Here we describe how the 21-cm line of neutral hydrogen provides a powerful probe of the reionization process and therefore important constraints on both the galaxies and intergalactic absorbers at that time. While existing experiments will make precise statistical measurements over the next decade, we argue that improved 21-cm analysis techniques - allowing imaging of the neutral gas itself - as well as improved theoretical models, are crucial for testing our understanding of this important era., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The early phases of galaxy formation constitute one of the most exciting frontiers in astrophysics. It is during this era that the first luminous sources reionize the intergalactic medium - the moment when structure formation affects every baryon in the Universe. Here we argue that we will obtain a complete picture of this era by combining observations of galaxies with direct measurements of the reionization process: the former will provide a detailed understanding of bright sources, while the latter will constrain the (substantial) faint source population. We further describe how optimizing the comparison of these two measurements requires near-infrared galaxy surveys covering large volumes and retaining redshift information and also improvements in 21-cm analysis, moving those experiments into the imaging regime., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Cosmic dawn and the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) are among the least explored observational eras in cosmology: a time at which the first galaxies and supermassive black holes formed and reionized the cold, neutral Universe of the post-recombination era. With current instruments, only a handful of the brightest galaxies and quasars from that time are detectable as individual objects, due to their extreme distances. Fortunately, a multitude of multi-wavelength intensity mapping measurements, ranging from the redshifted 21 cm background in the radio to the unresolved X-ray background, contain a plethora of synergistic information about this elusive era. The coming decade will likely see direct detections of inhomogenous reionization with CMB and 21 cm observations, and a slew of other probes covering overlapping areas and complementary physical processes will provide crucial additional information and cross-validation. Abstract

Our current understanding of the Universe is established through the pristine measurements of structure in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and the distribution and shapes of galaxies tracing the large scale structure (LSS) of the Universe. One key ingredient that underlies cosmological observables is that the field that sources the observed structure is assumed to be initially Gaussian with high precision. Nevertheless, a minimal deviation from Gaussianityis perhaps the most robust theoretical prediction of models that explain the observed Universe; itis necessarily present even in the simplest scenarios. In addition, most inflationary models produce far higher levels of non-Gaussianity. Abstract

Background: Conduction system pacing (CSP) is considered an effective and physiological form of pacing in patients requiring cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT). Objective: To compare electrocardiographic (ECG), echocardiographic (ECHO) characteristics and clinical outcomes among patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) undergoing CRT with CSP or biventricular pacing (BVP). Methods: This study protocol was registered in the PROSPERO registry (CRD42022375155) and the review was conducted per the PRISMA protocol. Four major databases were searched from inception till October 20, 2022, for relevant studies comparing CSP to BVP for CRT in patients with HFrEF. Results: From a total of 10,072 references identified, 35 full-text were assessed and 18 studies (6 RCTs, 12 observational studies) were included in the review. Following left bundle branch area pacing (LBBAP), on average, paced QRS duration was 28 ms narrower in comparison to BVP (MD -27.69, CI -36.59 to -18.80), and a similar result was obtained with HBP vs. BVP as well. Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) improvement was greater with CSP in comparison to BVP [LBBAP (MD 6.03, CI 4.16–7.91); HBP (MD 3.79, CI 0.46–7.11); HPSP (MD 6.60, CI 4.42–8.78). There were higher odds of being responders (OR 3.82, CI 1.88–7.75)/super responders (OR 2.08, CI 1.53–2.82) (per ECHO findings) in the CSP group, and overall mortality (OR 0.61, CI 0.40–0.93) and hospitalization for HF (HHF) (OR 0.37, CI 0.25–0.55) was lower in CSP group. Conclusion: Our analysis showed better ECG, ECHO, and clinical outcomes in terms of mortality and HHF with CSP compared to BVP.

Abstract

Therapies that demonstrate durable, long-term responses with manageable safety and tolerability are needed for patients with relapsed/refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (R/R DLBCL). Loncastuximab tesirine (loncastuximab tesirine-lpyl [Lonca]), an anti-CD19 antibody conjugated to a potent pyrrolobenzodiazepine dimer, demonstrated single-agent antitumor activity in the pivotal phase II LOTIS-2 study in heavily pretreated patients with R/R DLBCL. Here we present updated efficacy and safety analyses from LOTIS-2, performed for all patients and in subsets of patients with a complete response (CR), including patients with CR who were event-free (no progressive disease or death) for ≥1 year and ≥2 years from cycle 1, day 1 of treatment. Lonca was administered every 3 weeks (0.15 mg/kg for 2 cycles; 0.075 mg/kg for subsequent cycles). As of the final data cutoff (September 15, 2022; median follow-up: 7.8 months [range, 0.3-42.6]), 70 of 145 (48.3%) patients achieved an overall response. Thirty-six (24.8%) patients achieved CR, of which 16 (44%) and 11 (31%) were event-free for ≥1 year and ≥2 years, respectively. In the all-treated population, the median overall survival was 9.5 months; the median progression-free survival was 4.9 months. Among patients with CR, median overall survival and progression-free survival were not reached, with 24-month overall and progression-free survival rates of 68.2% (95% CI: 50.0-81.0) and 72.5% (95% CI: 48.2-86.8), respectively. No new safety concerns were detected. With additional follow-up, Lonca continued to demonstrate durable, long-term responses with manageable safety and tolerability in patients with CR (clinicaltrials gov. Identifier: NCT03589469).

Abstract

The growing need for high-performance lithium-ion battery modules in different applications requires the creation of effective thermal management systems to tackle the issues related to heat production and dissipation. The research introduces a new Hybrid Thermal Management System (HTMS) aimed at improving the thermal efficiency of Li-ion battery modules. HTMS uses active and passive cooling to enhance temperature regulation, reduce thermal strain, and prolong the battery’s lifespan. This study examines the dynamic thermal behaviour of an air- cooled Battery Thermal Management System (BTMS) at 1C discharge rate. This investigation will take into consideration a variety of design and flow adjustments, in addition to other factors. Moreover, the comprehensive integrated thermal-electrochemical model demonstrates that the thermal performance of the battery thermal management system (BTMS) is influenced by the quantity of battery cells, how the cells are arranged inside the module, and the air velocity. This is demonstrated by the fact that the BTMS is a thermal management system. This work investigates the standard deviation, heat generation plots, discharge curves, streamline profiles, temperature contours, average, and maximum temperature variation in the module. Additionally, the work determines the maximum temperature variation.

Abstract

Lithium-ion cells exhibit superior energy and power density, longer cycle life, and lower cost compared to other types of batteries. Research is required to streamline the utilisation of lithium-ion cell stacked battery packs with battery management systems (BMS). The Battery Management System (BMS) detects temperature, current, and voltage, and offers users information on the state of charge (SoC) and state of health (SoH). Sensor device noises can lead to measurement inaccuracies in larger stacked battery cells. BMS engineers utilise equivalent circuit model (ECM) and state estimation techniques to tackle this issue. Cell degradation mechanisms were studied through numerical and experimental analyses using the PBM method with FEM. A transfer function was developed to analyse the increase in cell impedance based on chemical kinetics parameters. The cell’s electrochemical impedance characteristics were analysed through simulation and experimental studies using Nyquist and Bode plot analysis. The transfer function was simplified through approximation to reduce nonlinearities. A chemical mechanical stress analysis was conducted to assess the lithium concentration in a cell under a pulse voltage.
