Introduction: Liposarcoma of the bone is an extremely rare and aggressive primary bone tumor. We aimed to review all liposarcoma cases in the literature and present our new young female patient with liposarcoma. Methods: of literature review and case presentation: Electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science (WOS), and Google Scholar) were searched to retrieve the related cases on liposarcoma. Extraction for important clinical data was done independently by two authors to present age, gender, site, histological type, the treatment used, and clinical outcomes of survival or recurrence. In our presented case, we followed the CARE checklist. Results: A total of 33 patients were included in the literature search: 19 (57.6 %) male and 14 (42.4 %) female, with a mean age of 42.85 ± 18.83. Seven patients (21.2 %) were less than the age of 20 years old. The most frequent subtype was primary pleomorphic liposarcoma. Most treatment options were resection, excision, and amputation with or without chemotherapy. Recurrence was reported in four cases. However, most patients died due to late diagnosis with distant organ metastasis. Case presentation: we report a case of primary pleomorphic liposarcoma of the left distal femur of a twelve-year-old female. The patient presented with a painful lower thigh swelling, not responding to analgesics. Imaging studies were done and showed a lesion extended across the distal physeal plate laterally and centrally with scattered lesions medially. Histologically, the tumor showed a uniformly pleomorphic liposarcomatous pattern with extensive necrosis. Genetic analysis showed frequent mutations in LATS2, CREBBP, and SMAD2 genes in addition to deletions and amplifications in different genetic pathways. Two cycles of MAP chemotherapy were completed before tumor excision and total left knee replacement, followed by two other MAP cycles postoperatively. Multiple lung metastases were detected on chest CT 10 months postoperatively. The patient died 13 months postoperatively. Conclusion: Primary pleomorphic liposarcoma can present as sclerotic and aggressive malignant bone tumors at an early age. Excision, MAP, and MAPI chemotherapy are not enough to treat this tumor.

IntroductionIn the context of collective efforts taken in Japan to control the spread of COVID-19, the state of emergency and social distancing have caused a negative impact on the mental health of all residents, including foreign communities in Japan. This study aimed to evaluate the level of anxiety and its associated factors among non-Japanese residents residing in Japan during the COVID-19 pandemic.MethodsA web-based survey in 13 languages was conducted among non-Japanese residents living in Japan during the COVID-19 situation. The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory assessed the level of anxiety-State (STAI-S) scores prorated from its six-item version. The multivariable logistic regression using the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) method was performed to identify the associated factors of anxiety among participants.ResultsFrom January to March 2021, we collected 392 responses. A total of 357 valid responses were analyzed. 54.6% of participants suffered from clinically significant anxiety (CSA). In multivariable logistic model analysis, the CSA status or the high level of anxiety was associated with three factors, including having troubles/difficulties in learning or working, decreased sleep duration, and decreased overall physical health (pConclusionOur study suggests several possible risk factors of anxiety among non-Japanese residents living in Japan undergoing the COVID-19 pandemic, including the troubles or difficulties in learning or working, the decrease in sleep duration, and the decrease in overall physical health.

Abstract Introduction Retinoblastoma (RB) is the most common primary intraocular cancer of childhood. Over the last few decades, a variety of techniques and treatment modalities emerged that improved the survival and ocular salvage rate of patients with RB. We investigated the relative survival trends of patients with RB from 2000 to 2018 by using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Design Retrospective database review. Methods We extracted data from SEER 18 from 2000 to 2018. All patients with clinically diagnosed RB during the study period were included. We utilized SEER*Stat 8.3.9 and JPSurv software to estimate relative 5‐ and 10‐year survival rates and trends and generated descriptive analyses with IBM SPSS. Main Outcome Measures Patient survival rates at 5‐ and 10‐year after RB diagnosis. Results RB was diagnosed in 1479 patients within the SEER 18 Program during our study period. The cohort comprised 776 (52.5%) males, 615 (41.6%) non‐Hispanic whites, 487(32.9%) Hispanics, 1030 (69.6%) patients with unilateral disease, and 1087 (73.5%) patients with localized disease. Relative survival trends at 5‐ and 10‐year significantly declined over the study periods (−0.42%, and −0.50% annually, respectively) but the decline was not significant in unilateral and bilateral RB cases separately. Conclusions Five‐ and ten‐year relative survival trends declined from 2000 to 2018 and were significantly decreasing. Further studies that include more patients are needed to identify the factors contributing to reduced survival of patients with RB over time.

Abstract Bone fractures are a global public health concern, yet no thorough investigation of low-dose aspirin usage to prevent fractures in the elderly has been conducted. Many interventional human and animal studies have tried to detect the correct role of low-dose aspirin on fractures in elderly persons. The literature doesn't consist of a retrospective observational study that includes a large number of older individuals and evaluates the accurate effect of aspirin on the fractures post falling from low heights. This cross-sectional includes 7132 elderly persons and aimed to detect if there was a link between taking low-dose aspirin to prevent fractures in the elderly. Data was extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database for 2017–2020 and 2013–2014. Demographic and examination data were collected during in-home interviews and study visits to a mobile examination center. Standardized questionnaires were used to collect information such as age, gender, race, educational level, and family income-to-poverty ratio. Body mass index (BMI), weight, standing height, upper leg length, upper arm length, arm circumference, and wrist circumference were all measured during the examination. The study examined 8127 patients, with 7132 elderly patients suitable for data analysis. The odds ratio of fractures due to a fall from standing height or less was 0.963 (95 percent confidence interval 0.08–1.149) in low-dose aspirin users, while having parents with osteoporosis had a related risk of 1.23. (95 percent confidence interval 0.81–1.8). The total number of fractures was 1295; with hip fractures constituting up to 13.82%, wrist fractures of 66.56%, and spine fractures of 19.61%. There was no significant difference in femur and spine bone mineral density (BMD) in the two groups (use low dose aspirin and don't use). Females had a 5.6 times greater fracture risk related to a fall from standing height or less (1 time or more) than males (P-value 0.05). This cross-sectional study reveals that taking low-dose aspirin to prevent fractures in the elderly is statistically insignificant. However, fractures are more common in older persons, especially in older women; thus, more widespread injury prevention initiatives and access to osteoporosis prevention and diagnosis for older people should improve to minimize the overall burden.

BackgroundThis study aims to assess the electrocardiographic interpretation abilities of resident doctors at internal medicine and emergency medicine departments in eight Arabic countries.MethodsAn online cross-sectional study was conducted between October 7, 2022 and October 21, 2022 in eight Arabic countries. The questionnaire consisted of two main sections: the first section included sociodemographic information, while the second section contained 12 clinical case questions of the most severe cardiac abnormalities with their electrocardiography (ECG) recordings.ResultsOut of 2,509 responses, 630 were eligible for the data analysis. More than half of the participants were males (52.4%). Internal medicine residents were (n = 530, 84.1%), whereas emergency medicine residents were (n = 100, 15.9%). Almost participants were in their first or second years of residency (79.8%). Only 36.2% of the inquired resident doctors had attended an ECG course. Most participants, 85.6%, recognized the ECG wave order correctly, and 50.5% of the participants scored above 7.5/10 on the ECG interpretation scale. The proportions of participants who were properly diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, third-degree heart block, and atrial tachycardia were 71.1, 76.7, and 56.6%, respectively. No statistically significant difference was defined between the internal and emergency medicine residents regarding their knowledge of ECG interpretation (p value = 0.42). Several reports showed the likelihood of a relationship between COVID-19 infection and the onset and prognosis of diabetes mellitus (DM) of all types. A 73-year-old female patient who presented to the clinic with respiratory symptoms and was tested positive for COVID-19 and treated for the next three days. Despite having neither a known history of hyperglycemia nor a family history of diabetes, she was unconscious and suffering from polyuria and polydipsia when she was brought to the emergency department. Once her condition was successfully stabilized, she was sent home with COVID-19 medications and oral anti-diabetic therapy. After subsequent viral recovery and continued anti-diabetic medication, the patient was monitored for the following seven months. DM might be linked to the SARS-CoV-2 infection. Further research is necessary to prove a relationship between COVID-19 and newly-onset diabetes.

BackgroundSurveys are an effective method for collecting a large quantity of data. However, incomplete responses to these surveys can affect the validity of the studies and introduce bias. Recent studies have suggested that monetary incentives may increase survey response rates. We intended to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to evaluate the effect of monetary incentives on survey participation.MethodsA systematic search of electronic databases was conducted to collect studies assessing the impact of monetary incentives on survey participation. The primary outcome of interest was the response rates to incentives: money, lottery, and voucher. We used the Cochrane Collaboration tool to assess the risk of bias in randomized trials. We calculated the rate ratio (RR) with its 95% confidence interval (95% CI) using Review Manager Software (version 5.3). We used random-effects analysis and considered the data statistically significant with a P-value ResultsForty-six RCTs were included. A total of 109,648 participants from 14 countries were involved. The mean age of participants ranged from 15 to more than 60 years, with 27.5% being males, 16.7% being females, and the other 55.8% not reported. Our analysis showed a significant increase in response rate in the incentive group compared to the control group, irrespective of the incentive methods. Money was the most efficient way to increase the response rate (RR: 1.25; 95% CI: 1.16,1.35; P = < 0.00001) compared to voucher (RR: 1.19; 95% CI: 1.08,1.31; P = < 0.0005) and lottery (RR: 1.12; 95% CI: 1.03,1.22; P = < 0.009).ConclusionMonetary incentives encourage the response rate in surveys. Money was more effective than vouchers or lotteries. Therefore, researchers may include money as an incentive to improve the response rate while conducting surveys.

Background: Risk perceptions of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are considered important as they impact community health behaviors. The aim of this study was to determine the perceived risk of infection and death due to COVID-19 and to assess the factors associated with such risk perceptions among community members in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in Africa, Asia, and South America. Methods: An online cross-sectional study was conducted in 10 LMICs in Africa, Asia, and South America from February to May 2021. A questionnaire was utilized to assess the perceived risk of infection and death from COVID-19 and its plausible determinants. A logistic regression model was used to identify the factors associated with such risk perceptions. Results: A total of 1,646 responses were included in the analysis of the perceived risk of becoming infected and dying from COVID-19. Our data suggested that 36.4% of participants had a high perceived risk of COVID-19 infection, while only 22.4% had a perceived risk of dying from COVID-19. Being a woman, working in healthcare-related sectors, contracting pulmonary disease, knowing people in the immediate social environment who are or have been infected with COVID-19, as well as seeing or reading about individuals infected with COVID-19 on social media or TV were all associated with a higher perceived risk of becoming infected with COVID-19. In addition, being a woman, elderly, having heart disease and pulmonary disease, knowing people in the immediate social environment who are or have been infected with COVID-19, and seeing or reading about individuals infected with COVID-19 on social media or TV had a higher perceived risk of dying from COVID-19. Conclusions: The perceived risk of infection and death due to COVID-19 are relatively low among respondents; this suggests the need to conduct health campaigns to disseminate knowledge and information on the ongoing pandemic.

Background: Over the past few decades, a vast number of articles focused on bone metastasis have been published. Bibliometric analysis is helpful to determine the qualities and characteristics and to reveal the influential articles in this field. Methods: All the databases in Web of Science were utilized to identify articles published from 1961 to 2020. The top 100 most cited articles on bone metastases were involved for degree centrality analysis and analyses on publication time and citations, journals, authors, geographical distribution, research institutions, and research keywords. Results: The selected articles were published mainly from 1986 to 2015. The 100 most cited articles were selected from a total of 67,451 citations out of 90,502 publications with a density of 50.239 citations/year. Citations per article ranged from 357 to 2167. The leading country was USA, followed by Canada and United Kingdom. The most frequently studied themes were clinical management of bone metastasis from different malignancy origins. A co-authorship analysis revealed an intense collaborative activity between countries and institutions. Conclusions: This study identified the top 100 most cited articles on bone metastasis. Publication time, area, and theme distribution were thoroughly analyzed. The present study highlighted some of the most influential contributions to the field. Clinical and academic communities have shown a sustained interest in the management of bone metastasis.

Background and aimLeucopenia (LP) greatly limits the efficacy of chemotherapy in osteosarcoma patients. This study aimed to evaluate the nutritional status of osteosarcoma patients before chemotherapy, assess the risk of LP during the perichemotherapy period, and explore the association between malnutrition and LP.Materials and methodsThis study retrospectively analyzed osteosarcoma patients treated in the Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital, China, between January 2009 and December 2020 according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Malnutrition in adolescents (5 to 19 years old) and adults (≥20 years old) was diagnosed using WHO AnthroPlus software (version 1.0.4) and Global Leadership initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM), respectively. According to the diagnostic criteria of LP in CTCAE 5.0, patients were divided into the LP group and the non-LP group.ResultsA total of 245 osteosarcoma patients were included. The incidence of malnutrition was 49.0%, and the incidence of LP was 51.8%. The incidence of malnutrition in adolescent patients was 53.1%, and their incidence of LP was 55.2%; the incidence of malnutrition in adult patients was 43.1%, and their incidence of LP was 47.1%. Logistic regression analysis showed that malnutrition before chemotherapy was an independent risk factor for the occurrence of LP after chemotherapy (OR = 6.85, 95% CI = 2.16-25.43; and OR = 35.03, 95% CI = 6.98-238.46 in mildly and severely malnourished young patients; OR = 6.06; 95% CI = 1.43-30.16; and OR = 38.09, 95% CI = 7.23-285.78 in mildly and severely malnourished adult patients, respectively). The results showed that age and nutritional status had a joint effect on the occurrence of LP.ConclusionThe nutrition status of osteosarcoma patients before chemotherapy is significantly correlated with the occurrence and severity of LP during peri-chemotherapy period. During osteosarcoma chemotherapy, necessary nutritional support should be given to patients of different ages to correct their malnutrition status in a timely manner, ultimately improving the efficacy of chemotherapy and the prognosis of patients.

PurposeTo investigate the non-cancer causes of death (COD) in cancer patients with synchronous bone metastasis (BM) that is based on the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database.MethodsThe retrospective cohort study included malignant cancer patients with synchronous BM diagnosed from 2010 to 2018 in the SEER database. The frequencies and proportion of non-cancer COD were calculated and analyzed in different genders, ages, and races subgroups.ResultsA total of 97,997 patients were deceased and included into the current study and 6,782 patients were died of non-cancer causes with a male predominance (N = 4,515, 66.6%). Around half of deaths (N = 3,254, 48.0%) occurred within 6 months after diagnosis while 721 patients were deceased after 3 years. Lung and bronchus cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, kidney and renal pelvis cancer, and liver cancer were proved to be the top five cancer types resulting in non-cancer caused death. Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases were the leading non-cancer cause of death (N = 2,618), followed by COPD and associated conditions (N = 553) and septicemia, infectious and parasitic diseases (N = 544). Sub-analyses stratified by gender, age and race were performed and the similar results with slightly difference were observed.ConclusionsCardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases were the main non-cancer cause of death in cancer patients with synchronous BM. Other non-cancer causes included COPD, septicemia, infectious and parasitic diseases, and so on. These findings should be considered by physicians. Physicians can counsel cancer patients with BM regarding survivorship with death causes screening and focus on prevention of non-cancer deaths.

BackgroundPheochromocytoma (PHEO) and paraganglioma (PGL) are relatively rare neuroendocrine tumors. The factors affecting patients with early death remain poorly defined. We aimed to study the demographic and clinicopathologic pattern and to develop and validate a prediction model for PHEO/PGL patients with early death.MethodsData of 800 participants were collected from the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database as a construction cohort, while data of 340 participants were selected as a validation cohort. Risk factors considered included the year of diagnosis, age at diagnosis, gender, marital status, race, insurance status, tumor type, primary location, laterality, the presence of distant metastasis. Univariate and multivariate logistic regressions were performed to determine the risk factors. R software was used to generate the nomogram. Calibration ability, discrimination ability, and decision curve analysis were analyzed in both construction and validation cohorts.ResultsPHEO and PGL patients accounted for 54.3% (N=434) and 45.7% (N=366), respectively. More than half of tumors (N=401, 50.1%) occurred in the adrenal gland, while 16.9% (N=135) were in aortic/carotid bodies. For the entire cohort, the median overall survival (OS) was 116.0 (95% CI: 101.5-130.5) months. BackgroundRecruitment plays a vital role in conducting randomized control trials (RCTs). Challenges and failure of proper recruitment lead to early termination of trials. Monetary incentives have been suggested as a potential solution to these challenges. Therefore, we aimed to do a systematic review and analysis to evaluate the effect of incentives on the number of participants willing to consent to and participate in RCTs.MethodsElectronic databases were systematically searched from inception to September 23rd, 2021, using the following keywords: payments, incentive, response, participation, enrollment, randomized, randomization, and RCT. The Cochrane Risk of Bias tool was used to assess the quality of the included trials. Risk ratios (RRs) were calculated with their corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI). All analyses were done with the random-effects model. We used Revman software to perform the analysis.ResultsSix RCTs with 6,253 Participants met the inclusion criteria. Our analysis showed significant improvement in response rate (RR: 1.27; 95% CI: 1.04, 1.55; P = 0.02) and consent rates (RR: 1.44; 95% CI: 1.11, 1.85; P = 0.006) when an incentive payment was offered to participants. Even a small amount of incentive showed significant improvement in both consent (RR: 1.33; 95% CI: 1.03, 1.73; P = 0.03) and response rates (RR: 1.26; 95% CI: 1.08, 1.47; P = 0.004).ConclusionIn conclusion, our meta-analysis demonstrated statistically significant increases in the rate of consent and responses from participants when offered even small monetary value incentives. These findings suggest that incentives may be used to reduce the rate of recruitment failure and subsequent study termination. However, further RCTs are needed to establish a critical threshold beyond which incentive amount does not alter response rates further and the types of RCTs in which financial incentives are likely to be effective.

BackgroundRoxadustat (ROX) is a new medication for anemia as a complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Our meta-analysis aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of ROX, especially on the cardiovascular risks, for anemia in NDD-CKD patients.MethodsElectronic databases were searched systematically from inception to July 2021 to look for randomized control trials (RCTs) that evaluated ROX NDD-CKD patients. Hemoglobin level and iron utilization parameters, including ferritin, serum iron, transferrin saturation (TSAT), total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), transferrin, and hepcidin were analyzed for efficacy. Pooled risk ratios (RRs) and standardized mean differences (SMDs) were calculated and presented with their 95% confidential intervals (CIs).ResultsNine RCTs included a total of 3,175 patients in the ROX group and 2,446 patients in the control group. When compared the control group, ROX increased Hb level significantly (SMD: 1.65; 95% CI: 1.08, 2.22; P< 0.00001) and improved iron utilization parameters by decreasing ferritin (SMD: -0.32; 95% CI: -0.51, -0.14; P = 0.0006), TSAT (SMD: -0.19; 95% CI: -0.32, -0.07; P = 0.003), and hepcidin (SMD: -0.74; 95% CI: -1.09, -0.39; P< 0.0001) and increasing TIBC (SMD: 0.99; 95% CI: 0.76, 1.22; P< 0.00001) and transferrin (SMD: 1.20; 95% CI: 0.70, 1.71; P< 0.00001). As for safety, ROX was associated with higher serious adverse effects (RR: 1.07; 95% CI: 1.01, 1.13; P = 0.01), deep venous thrombosis (DVT) (RR: 3.80; 95% CI: 1.5, 9.64; P = 0.08), and hypertension (HTN) (RR: 1.37; 95% CI: 1.13, 1.65; P = 0.001).ConclusionWe concluded that ROX increased Hb level and improved iron utilization parameters in NDD-CKD patients, but ROX was associated with higher serious adverse effects, especially DVT and HTN. Our results support the use of ROX for NDD-CKD patients with anemia. However, higher-quality RCTs are still needed to ensure its safety and risk of thrombosis.

The impact of viral infections on patients admitted with a diagnosis of heart failure is not well understood. We conducted a retrospective cohort study using data from the National Inpatient Sample in the United States to evaluate the proportion of admissions with a diagnosis of heart failure and viral infections, and we explored how viral infections had impact on in-hospital mortality and length of stay. There were a total of 20,713,539 admission records with a diagnosis of heart failure included in the analysis and 3.8% had a concomitant diagnosis of viral infection. The mean length of stay was 20.1 ± 26.9 days, 12.9 ± 13.6 days, 12.1 ± 13.8 days, and 5.1 ± 6.5 days for records with a diagnosis of cytomegalovirus, viral meningitis/encephalitis, herpes simplex infection, and no viral infection, respectively. The most common diagnoses of viral infections were influenza (n = 240,260) and chronic viral hepatitis (n = 194,400), and the highest rates of mortality were observed for records with a diagnosis of cytomegalovirus (13.2%), acute viral hepatitis (12.5%), and viral meningitis/encephalitis (11.1%). The viral infections significantly associated with increased odds of mortality were cytomegalovirus infection (OR 1.84 95% CI 1.57–2.16), acute hepatitis (OR 1.29 95% CI 1.15–1.45), and HIV (OR 1.22 95% CI 1.11–1.34). In conclusion, viral infections are co-diagnosis in 3.8% of patient records with heart failure and detection of some viruses may be important as they increase mortality and may prolong length of stay in hospital.

BackgroundSince the COVID-19 pandemic began, there have been concerns related to the preparedness of healthcare workers (HCWs). This study aimed to describe the level of awareness and preparedness of hospital HCWs at the time of the first wave.MethodsThis multinational, multicenter, cross-sectional survey was conducted among hospital HCWs from February to May 2020. We used a hierarchical logistic regression multivariate analysis to adjust the influence of variables based on awareness and preparedness. We then used association rule mining to identify relationships between HCW confidence in handling suspected COVID-19 patients and prior COVID-19 case-management training.ResultsWe surveyed 24,653 HCWs from 371 hospitals across 57 countries and received 17,302 responses from 70.2% HCWs overall. The median COVID-19 preparedness score was 11.0 (interquartile range [IQR] = 6.0-14.0) and the median awareness score was 29.6 (IQR = 26.6-32.6). HCWs at COVID-19 designated facilities with previous outbreak experience, or HCWs who were trained for dealing with the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak, had significantly higher levels of preparedness and awareness (pInterpretationThere was an unsurprising high level of awareness and preparedness among HCWs who participated in COVID-19 training courses. However, disparity existed along the lines of gender and type of HCW. It is unknown whether the difference in COVID-19 preparedness that we detected early in the pandemic may have translated into disproportionate SARS-CoV-2 burden of disease by gender or HCW type.

Angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) therapy has been evaluated to slow down the disease progression in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), but there is scarce evidence available to date. Therefore, our meta-analysis aimed to explore the efficacy of ARB therapy as a potential disease-modifying treatment in patients with HCM. A literature search was performed using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane library, and Clinicaltrials.gov databases from inception to December 13th, 2021. We included only randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The quality of included studies was assessed by the Cochrane Collaboration’s tool. Primary outcomes included the reduction in left ventricular mass and improvement in other echocardiographic features of myocardial dysfunction. The secondary outcome was a net reduction in systolic blood pressure. Meta-analysis was performed using pooled standardized mean difference (SMD) and corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI). A total of 1286 articles were screened. Seven RCTs met the inclusion criteria representing a total of 397 patients with HCM (195 patients were in the ARB group). ARB treatment was associated with significant reduction in left ventricular mass (SMD: –0.77; 95% CI: –1.40, –0.03; p = 0.04). ARB therapy was also associated with a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure (SMD: –0.33; 95% CI: –0.61, –0.05: p = 0.02). ARB therapy is associated with a marked reduction in left ventricular mass and systolic blood pressure in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. We recommend further studies with a larger patient population size to confirm the findings of our meta-analysis.

Background and objectives: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a neurodegenerative disease that leads to progressive proximal muscle weakness and muscle atrophy. To assess the beneficial and adverse effects of nusinersen, a promising intervention for SMA, we conducted a systematic search and meta-analysis of the published randomized control trials (RCTs) of nusinersen for SMA. Materials and methods: Utilizing the Preferred Reporting for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA), we searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Central, and Clinicaltrials.gov from inception to 22 July 2021. Results: Three RCTs satisfying the inclusion and exclusion criteria covered 274 patients: 178 patients in the nusinersen group. Our results show a significant risk difference (RD) in the motor milestone response (RD: 0.51; 95% CI: 0.39, 0.62; p < 0.00001) and improvement in the HINE-2 score (RD: 0.26; 95% CI: 0.12, 0.40; p < 0.0003) in the nusinersen group compared to the control group. Moreover, a significant decrease in the risk ratio (RR) for severe adverse events (RR: 0.72; 95% CI: 0.57, 0.92; p = 0.007) and any adverse event leading to treatment discontinuation (RR: 0.40; 95% CI: 0.22, 0.74; p = 0.004) was observed. An insignificant result was found for any adverse effects (RR: 0.93; 95% CI: 0.97, 1.01; p = 0.14) and for serious adverse effects (RR: 0.81; 95% CI: 0.60, 1.07; p = 0.14). Conclusions: This review provides evidence that nusinersen treatment was effective in treatment for infants with SMA and was associated with fewer severe adverse events; however, more RCTs are needed to establish evidence.

The aim of this study was to determine the perceived risk of infection and death due to COVID-19 and to assess the factors associated with such risk perceptions among community members in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in Africa, Asia, and South America. Methods: An online cross-sectional study was conducted in 10 LMICs in Africa, Asia, and South America from February to May 2021. A questionnaire was utilized to assess the perceived risk of infection and death from COVID-19 and its plausible determinants. A logistic regression model was used to identify the factors associated with such risk perceptions. Results: A total of 1,646 responses were included in the analysis of the perceived risk of becoming infected and dying from COVID-19. Our data suggested that 36.4% of participants had a high perceived risk of COVID-19 infection, while only 22.4% had a perceived risk of dying from COVID-19. Being a woman, working in healthcare-related sectors, contracting pulmonary disease, knowing people in the immediate social environment who are or have been infected with COVID-19, as well as seeing or reading about individuals infected with COVID-19 on social media or TV were all associated with a higher perceived risk of becoming infected with COVID-19. In addition, being a woman, elderly, having heart disease and pulmonary disease, knowing people in the immediate social environment who are or have been infected with COVID-19, and seeing or reading about individuals infected with COVID-19 on social media or TV had a higher perceived risk of dying from COVID-19. Conclusions: The perceived risk of infection and death due to COVID-19 are relatively low among respondents; this suggests the need to conduct health campaigns to disseminate knowledge and information on the ongoing pandemic.
