The magnetization characteristics of superconducting strands of magnet cables have been measured. Measurements were done at 2K and at 4.2 K degrees on more than 50 strands with NbTi filament diameter between 5 and 7 micrometers. Results indicate interfilament coupling at 2K degrees at an applied field of about 10 mT. This value has a small influence on the field errors of the superconducting magnets. The magnetization decay is smaller than the typical 10% decay observed in LHC model magnets.

Magnetization measurements in a hysteresis measurement facility using the inductive integration method were conducted on technical superconductors operating at high frequencies. A peculiar behavior was observed in NbTi/copper-matrix strand subjected measurements in the upper frequency range. Experimental results were validated through comparisons with hysteresis curves derived from calculations.

The use of two coaxial ac coils is proposed as a means of solving the problem of ac-dc coil coupling in apparatus used to carry out loss and magnetization measurements. The approach has been implemented in a dc-ac superconducting magnet system for operation at 50 Hz and 60 Hz. The instrument generates an ac field ranging from 0.4 T to 1.1 T which is superimposed on a dc magnetic field of up to four tesla.

The relations obtaining between annealing conditions and superconducting properties is investigated. The aim is to reduce the annealing time and thereby reduce costs.

The system Ce(Rh(sub1-x)Rux)(sub3)B(sub2) is of interest as its low-temperature magnetic phase boundary is uncertain. Previous studies have reported a decay of ferromagnetic order from Tc = 115 K at x=0 to Tc = 40 k at x=0.1. Magnetic instabilities are often accompanied by non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behaviour, and this phenomena is explored.

The magnetization curves of several NbTi superconducting wires are derived via Hall probe measurements. The wires, which contained either a Cu or CuNi matrix, manifested irregular magnetization curves when a low external field was applied. This is attributed to the proximity effect coupling that occurs between bundles and within a bundle. The use of a transport current below the critical current level is also proven to lower such couplings.
