Although current laparoscopic techniques are best applied to benign urologic conditions, certain neoplastic urologic conditions are amenable to laparoscopic techniques. These conditions include staging pelvic lymphadenectomy for prostate cancer and testis tumor. Laparoscopic ablative procedures such as nephrectomy and nephroureterectomy for renal cell cancer and upper tract transitional cell carcinomas have been reported. Laparoscopic bladdersparing procedures for selected bladder cancers are also possible.

Urological surgery is becoming increasingly necessary in patients with acquired or congenital bleeding disorders. We reviewed the management of 10 such patients who required prostatectomy. The average age of the patients at operation was 65.7 years. Seven patients underwent transurethral prostatectomy and 3 underwent suprapubic prostatectomy. Postoperative bleeding occurred in 9 patients who required secondary procedures. Bleeding occurred an average of 13 days postoperatively. The mean hospital stay was 24 days. Partial thromboplastin time when determined was uniformly elevated in all patients preoperatively. The amount of factor and blood replacement is presented. Perioperative management of these patients is discussed in detail. A rational approach for the prevention of postoperative bleeding is presented.

Abstract:The author discusses the collotypeprinting process that was developed during the 19th century primarily for the reproduction of fine photographs where high fidelity is important. The process is described in considerable detail. Although collotype is now seldom used, the author believes that its revival in the fine arts should be attempted in view of the wider interest in prints of high quality. An extensive bibliography of texts dealing with the process is provided.

We describe a renal arteriovenous malformation in a patient with a 1-month history of flank pain. Imaging studies were interpreted as being consistent with renal-cell carcinoma. However, Doppler ultrasonography demonstrated turbulent blood flow, and selective renal angiography confirmed the diagnosis of an arteriovenous malformation. Embolization relieved the pain. This case calls attention to the need to consider arteriovenous malformations in the differential diagnosis of central homogenously enhancing renal lesions.
