1. Isotropic constants and platonic solids

Abstract

We discuss first-order optimality conditions for the isotropic constant and combine them with RS-movements to obtain structural information about polytopal maximizers. Strengthening a result by Rademacher, it is shown that a polytopal local maximizer with a simplicial vertex must be a simplex. A similar statement is shown for a centrally symmetric local maximizer with a simplicial vertex: it has to be a cross-polytope. Moreover, we show that a zonotope that maximizes the isotropic constant and that has a cubical zone must be a cube. Finally, we consider the class of zonotopes with at most n+1 generators and determine the extremals in this class.

Abstract

We study the problem of covering a given point set in the plane by unit disks so that each point is covered exactly once. We prove that 17 points can always be exactly covered. Motivated by first-order conditions for extremal bodies of geometric functionals, we study a functional analytic notion of infinitesimal perturbations of convex bodies and give a full characterization of the set of realizable perturbations if the perturbed body is a polytope. Recently, K.-Y. Wu introduced affine subspace concentration conditions for the cone volumes of polytopes and proved that the cone volumes of centered, reflexive, smooth lattice polytopes satisfy these conditions. We extend the result to arbitrary centered polytopes.

6. Generic Error Bounds for the Generalized Lasso with Sub-Exponential Data

Abstract

This work performs a non-asymptotic analysis of the generalized Lasso under the assumption of sub-exponential data. Our main results continue recent research on the benchmark case of (sub-)Gaussian sample distributions and thereby explore what conclusions are still valid when going beyond. While many statistical features remain unaffected (e.g., consistency and error decay rates), the key difference becomes manifested in how the complexity of the hypothesis set is measured. It turns out that the estimation error can be controlled by means of two complexity parameters that arise naturally from a generic-chaining-based proof strategy. The output model can be non-realizable, while the only requirement for the input vector is a generic concentration inequality of Bernstein-type, which can be implemented for a variety of sub-exponential distributions. This abstract approach allows us to reproduce, unify, and extend previously known guarantees for the generalized Lasso. In particular, we present applications to semi-parametric output models and phase retrieval via the lifted Lasso. Abstract

Hot forging dies are subjected to high loads, which can lead to early tool failures. Abrasive wear, plastic deformation and thermal softening of the surface layer can be counteracted in particular by a high surface hardness. Thermochemical diffusion treatments and coatings are established as wear protection measures. DLC coatings, which feature excellent frictional properties and high hardness, are commonly applied on cold forging tools. However, the low coating adhesion to steel and the thermal stability of the diamond bond limit the current range of application. In this study, DLC coatings are applied in metallic treatment atmospheres with the aim of increasing the diamond bond’s temperature resistance. Furthermore, the influence of weak and intense nitriding to coating adhesion is investigated to reduce coating delamination. A pre-selection of modified DLC coatings for hot forging dies was carried out on the basis of hardness and scratch tests. The most promising tungsten DLC coating was tested in serial forging tests. Based on tool contour comparisons before and after forging, the potential as a wear protection measure for hot forging dies was determined. Tool wear was reduced by up to 29 % after 100 forging cycles with the tungsten DLC coating compared to the nitrided reference.

In discussion with his co-collaborators, dance artists Natalie Garrett Brown and Amy Voris, this interview explores the photographic process of Christian Kipp, landscape and dance photographer, as he reflects on his experience of working on the Enter & Inhabit project. The questions asked by Garrett Brown and Voris were generated through movement and reflective writing in response to the photographic collection exhibited as part of the 2011 Dance and Somatic Practices Conference, Coventry, UK. In particular, the article explores the interrelationship between the somatic-informed movement practices and performance score creation of Garrett Brown and Voris and the sensorial play of Kipp's photography. Co-authored by Garrett Brown, Kipp and Voris, this collection of questions and responses seeks to continue rather than merely document the Enter & Inhabit collaborative process. Abstract

Towards the very end of this legislative period, a cross-caucus parliamentary majority gave same-sex marriage the green light - progress for the legal equality of homosexuals in Germany. This report focuses on the life situations of homosexual and bisexual people in Germany. The careers they pursue, for example, differ from those of heterosexuals. Hourly wages are an area of significant disparity: homosexual and bisexual men earn less per hour than heterosexual men with the same qualifications in comparable professions. While differences in personality structure are virtually nonexistent, homosexuals and bisexuals describe themselves as less satisfied with their lives and under more psychological stress. An analysis based on the data from the Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) at the German Institute for Economic Research yielded these and other results. The SOEP is one of the few representative population surveys in Germany that collects information on the sexual orientation of participants. Expanding the scope of regular social reporting to include data on sexual orientation would make it possible to better document differences in life situations and to more effectively identify where action is needed - such as in fighting discrimination.

Abstract

Mit der Öffnung der Ehe für alle, die zum Ende der derzeitigen Legislaturperiode eine fraktionsübergreifende parlamentarische Mehrheit fand, schreitet die rechtliche Gleichstellung Homosexueller in Deutschland voran. Dieser Bericht befasst sich mit den Lebenslagen homo- und bisexueller Menschen in Deutschland, die sich zum Beispiel hinsichtlich ausgeübter Berufe von Heterosexuellen unterscheiden. Ein wesentlicher Unterschied besteht auch beim Stundenlohn, der bei homo- und bisexuellen Männern niedriger liegt als bei gleichqualifizierten heterosexuellen Männern in vergleichbaren Berufen. Während kaum Differenzen in Persönlichkeitsstrukturen zu finden sind, scheinen Homo- und Bisexuelle nach eigenen Angaben weniger zufrieden mit ihrem Leben und stärker psychisch belastet. Diese und andere Ergebnisse zeigt eine Analyse auf Basis der Daten des Sozio-oekonomischen Panels (SOEP) am DIW Berlin. Das SOEP ist eine der wenigen bevölkerungsrepräsentativen Befragungen in Deutschland, in der Angaben zur sexuellen Orientierung der StudienteilnehmerInnen erhoben werden. Wünschenswert wäre eine systematische Erweiterung der Sozialberichterstattung um diese Dimension. Differenzen in Lebenslagen könnten so besser dokumentiert und gegebenenfalls Handlungsbedarf - zum Beispiel bei der Bekämpfung von Diskriminierung - besser identifiziert werden.

Abstract

The article states that photodynamic therapy (PDT) using topical 5- aminolaevulinic acid (ALA) is a promising new treatment for cutaneous malignancy . However, it has recently been demonstrated that basal cell carcinomas (BCC) do not respond as well as Bowen's disease (BD) . The reasons for this are unclear but may relate to the distribution of the phototoxic species involved within the tumor. This distribution has been studied using ultra-low light level fluorescence microscopy. PpIX fluorescence was found to be localized almost completely to the tumor cells in BD and BCC.
