This essay discusses my personal experience with sexual harassment perpetrated by a student. Also, discussed are the professional and personal consequences attached to sexual harassment experiences where the victim has more formal power than the abuser.

This article introduces a special issue on trust in elections. While the number of electoral democracies has grown globally, we are currently experiencing a crisis of electoral trust. Political polarization, social divisions, and the rapid spread of misinformation have all been related to enhanced widespread skepticism about the quality of national elections. The special issue is focused on two central questions: How can we explain variations in trust in elections at the individual and country levels? How does trust in elections shape political behavior? In the introduction essay, we frame the contributions of the special issue, provide descriptive statistics about trust in elections globally, summarize the current state of the literature, and point to avenues for future research. For decades, election research in the United States has focussed on the potentially disenfranchising consequences of evolving election laws and procedures. With the widespread changes and requirements caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, elections have adapted to prevent the spread of the virus. Despite implementing system changes, it is unclear what impact the pandemic had on the voter experience. This paper presents a case study, performed in collaboration with the Rhode Island Board of Elections, to investigate a Rhode Island polling location operated during the 2020 General Election and quantify the effect of COVID-19 mitigating procedures on system performance. To validate the modelling approach, a case study is developed for a Rhode Island polling location using data collected from that location during the 2020 General Election. The validated model is then adapted to create a hypothetical non-COVID-19 system to simulate the polling location pre-COVID-19. Simulated system performance of the COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 models are statistically compared to quantify the impact of COVID-19 mitigation strategies on system performance. This approach may be applied in future work to assist in election preparation for sudden system changes or in response to new election laws. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although reports of research misconduct and questionable research practices (QRPs) have been prevalent in the literature, very little has been written about these issues in the field of counseling. The current pilot study addresses (a) the continuous drive for evidence-based practice in education and counseling and (b) the relationship between QRPs and individual characteristics. QRPs are reported for the sample, indicating that this does exist, at least minimally, within the field of counseling. The authors also explored the role of demographic and specific personality characteristics in explaining QRPs.

When citizens experience an irregularity while voting, their confidence in elections is diminished, and they are more likely to perceive the results of the election as illegitimate. Although there are many irregularities that a voter may experience, this article evaluates the consequence of extensive wait times to vote on citizen confidence in the United States. Utilizing the 2008–2016 Survey on the Performance of American Elections (SPAE) the analysis finds that wait times have a negative effect on confidence as do challenges with the voting equipment and voter registration. The effect of negative experiences extends beyond lowered confidence that a voter's ballot is counted as intended to lower confidence that ballots at the local, state, and national level are counted as intended by voters as well. While extended wait times have a limited effect, negatively effecting the confidence in a voter's personal ballot and ballots across the local jurisdiction, negative experiences with registration or ballots and voting equipment affect evaluations of confidence at the personal level and across the local jurisdiction, state, and nation. Although the gender gap online has narrowed in the United States, little research on technology access and use has examined the different experiences of women--particularly the interaction between gender, race/ethnicity, and poverty. Using the most recent comprehensive survey of technology use and access, the 2003 Current Population Survey, we find new evidence of diminishing gender disparities overall, differences between African--American women and Latinas in the factors that influence technology access and use, and some indications that minority women outpace their male peers online. However, substantial disadvantages for minority women remain, driven by inequalities in education and income. We find evidence that while there is virtually no gender gap in technology access between White men and women, there is a gender divide among minority populations, but women are not unilaterally disadvantaged.
