Search

Disorder is ubiquitous in any quantum many-body system and is usually considered to be an obstacle to the elucidation of the underlying physics of complex systems, but its presence can often introduce exotic phases of matter that cannot generally be realized in a clean system. We report here a detailed experimental and theoretical study of magnetic properties of highly disordered Sr$_3$CuNb$_2$O$_9$ material which exhibits random site mixing between Cu and Nb. The magnetic moments (Cu$^{2+}$) are arranged in a quasi-cubic (three-dimensional) manner, leading to a high degree of frustration with a Curie-Weiss temperature ($\theta_{CW}$) of about -60 K without any long-range magnetic ordering down to 466 mK. These observations suggest that Sr$_3$CuNb$_2$O$_9$ is a candidate for a quantum spin liquid. More interestingly, the susceptibility ($\chi = M/\mu_0H$) and the $C_m/T$ ($C_m$ is the magnetic part of the heat capacity) follow a power-law behavior with decreasing temperature. In addition, $M(T,\mu_0H)$ and $C_m(T,\mu_0H)/T$ show scaling relationships over a wide temperature and field range. This unusual behavior with respect to the conventional behavior of a QSL can be discussed qualitatively as the coexistence of a disorder-induced random spin singlet (RSS) state and a QSL state. A quantitative description has been given by numerical calculations considering a power-law probability distribution $P(J) \propto J^{-\gamma}$ ($J$ is the exchange interaction) of random spin singlets. The parameters extracted from the numerical calculations are in excellent agreement with the experimental data. Furthermore, the analytical results are also consistent with the power-law and scaling behavior of $\chi$ and $C_m(T,\mu_0H)/T$ as a whole. Analogous to the charged electron-electron pair condensation in superconductors, an excitonic insulator (EI) represents Fermi surface instability due to spontaneous formation and condensation of charge-neutral electron-hole pair (exciton). Unlike in superconductors, however, the charge-neutral nature of exciton makes probing emergent EI phase via macroscopic physical properties generally difficult. Here, we propose a van der Waals coupled antiferromagnetic semiconductor GdGaI (GGI) as a new material category leading to emergent multi-q magnet intertwined with spontaneous exciton formation/condensation. Before excitonic band hybridization, a simple picture for the parent electronic state consists of electron (Gd-derived 5d) and hole (Ga-derived 4p) delocalized bands, together with Gd-derived 4f localized antiferromagnets with S = 7/2 classical nature. Through intra Gd atom 4f-5d Hund's coupling, a notable finding is the emergent minimum length scale (2a) Skyrmion-like spin texture resulting from spontaneous condensation/formation of spin-polarized exciton with BCS-BEC crossover phenomenology. The spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on an anisotropic triangular lattice (ATL) is an archetypal spin system hosting exotic quantum magnetism and dimensional crossover. However, the progress in experimental research on this field has been limited due to the scarcity of ideal model materials. Here, we show that rhenium oxyhalides $A_{3}$ReO$_{5}X_{2}$, where spin-1/2 Re$^{6+}$ ions form a layered structure of ATLs, allow for flexible chemical substitution in both cation $A^{2+}$ ($A$ = Ca, Sr, Ba, Pb) and anion $X^{-}$ ($X$ = Cl, Br) sites, leading to seven synthesizable compounds. By combining magnetic susceptibility and high-field magnetization measurements with theoretical calculations using the orthogonalized finite-temperature Lanczos method, we find that the anisotropy $J'/J$ ranges from 0.25 to 0.45 depending on the chemical composition. Our findings demonstrate that $A_{3}$ReO$_{5}X_{2}$ is an excellent platform for realizing diverse effective spin Hamiltonians that differ in the strength of the anisotropy $J'/J$ as well as the relevance of perturbation terms such as the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and interlayer exchange coupling., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, SM: 4 pages, 2 figures

We investigate the crystallographic and magnetic properties of a chromium-based thiospinel CuGaCr$_{4}$S$_{8}$. From a synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiment and structural refinement, Cu and Ga atoms are found to occupy the tetrahedral $A$-sites in an alternate way, yielding breathing pyrochlore Cr network. CuGaCr$_{4}$S$_{8}$ undergoes a magnetic transition associated with a structural distortion at 31 K in zero magnetic field, indicating that the spin-lattice coupling is responsible for relieving the geometrical frustration. When applying a pulsed high magnetic field, a sharp metamagnetic transition takes place at 40 T, followed by a 1/2-magnetization plateau up to 103 T. These phase transitions accompany dielectric anomalies, suggesting the presence of helical spin correlations in low-field phases. The density-functional-theory calculation reveals that CuGaCr$_{4}$S$_{8}$ is dominated by antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic exchange couplings within small and large tetrahedra, respectively, in analogy with CuInCr$_{4}$S$_{8}$. We argue that $A$-site-ordered Cr thiospinels serve as an excellent platform to explore diverse magnetic phases along with pronounced magnetoelastic and magnetodielectric responses., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures

The mutual coupling of spin and lattice degrees of freedom is ubiquitous in magnetic materials and potentially creates exotic magnetic states in response to the external magnetic field. Particularly, geometrically frustrated magnets serve as a fertile playground for realizing magnetic superstructure phases. Here, we observe an unconventional two-step magnetostructural transition prior to a half-magnetization plateau in a breathing pyrochlore chromium spinel by means of state-of-the-art magnetization and magnetostriction measurements in ultrahigh magnetic fields available up to 600 T. Considering a microscopic magnetoelastic theory, the intermediate-field phase can be assigned to a magnetic superstructure with a three-dimensional periodic array of 3-up-1-down and canted 2-up-2-down spin molecules. We demonstrate field-induced single-ion magnetic anisotropy resulting from the multiorbital Kondo effect on the diluted ytterbium alloy $(\mathrm{Lu}_{1-x}\mathrm{Yb}_x)\mathrm{Rh}_2\mathrm{Zn}_{20}$. Single-ion anisotropic metamagnetic behavior is revealed in low-temperature regions where the local Fermi-liquid state is formed. Specific hea, low-field magnetic susceptibility, and resistivity indicate reproduction of the ground-state properties by the $\mathrm{SU}(N = 8)$ Kondo model with a relatively large $c$-$f$ hybridization of $T_{\mathrm{K}} = 60.9 \ \mathrm{K}$. Dynamical susceptibility measurements on $\mathrm{Yb}\mathrm{Rh}_2\mathrm{Zn}_{20}$ support realizing the multiorbital Kondo ground state in $(\mathrm{Lu}_{1-x}\mathrm{Yb}_x)\mathrm{Rh}_2\mathrm{Zn}_{20}$. The single-ion magnetic anisotropy becomes evident above $\sim5 \ \mathrm{T}$, which is lower than the isotropic Kondo crossover field of 22.7 T, verifying blurred low-lying crystal field states through the multiorbital Kondo effect., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, 6 pages of supplementary material

We have performed magnetic torque and resistivity measurements on a centrosymmetric skyrmion-host GdRu2Si2, in which the dominant magnetic interaction leading to skyrmion formation is under debate. We observe both the de Haas-van Alphen and Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in the forced ferromagnetic phase. The angular dependence of the quantum oscillation frequencies can be reproduced by the ab-initio calculation. The de Haas-van Alphen oscillation is also observed in the double-Q phase with a different frequency to that in the forced ferromagnetic phase, indicating a Fermi surface reconstruction due to the coupling between localized spins and conduction electrons. The observation of spinon excitations in the $S=\frac{1}{2}$ triangular antiferromagnet Ca$_3$ReO$_5$Cl$_2$ reveals a quasi-one-dimensional (1D) nature of magnetic correlations, in spite of the nominally 2D magnetic structure. This phenomenon is known as frustration-induced dimensional reduction. Here, we present high-field electron spin resonance spectroscopy and magnetization studies of Ca$_3$ReO$_5$Cl$_2$, allowing us not only to refine spin-Hamiltonian parameters, but also to investigate peculiarities of its low-energy spin dynamics. We argue that the presence of the uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) shifts the spinon continuum in momentum space and, as a result, opens a zero-field gap at the $\Gamma$ point. We observed this gap directly. The shift is found to be consistent with the structural modulation in the ordered state, suggesting this material as a perfect model triangular-lattice system, where a pure DMI-spiral ground state can be realized.

The effect of pressure ($P$) on magnetic susceptibility of CsCuCl$_3$ was examined in magnetic fields ($\rm \mu_0$$H$) of up to 51 T using a proximity detector oscillator (PDO), and the $H$-$P$ phase diagram of CsCuCl$_3$ was constructed over the saturation field ($H_{\rm sat}$). We found that, with increasing $P$, $H_{\rm sat}$ increases and the uud-phase that appeared at $P$ = 0.7 GPa widened. Based on comparison between the experimental and calculated $H$-$P$ phase diagrams, the Y-phase was predicted to appear above 1.7 GPa. The interchain antiferromagnetic exchange interaction in the $ab$-plane was evaluated and found to increase with increasing $P$, which is consistent with a previous study under high pressure [D. Yamamoto {\it et al.}, Nat. Commun. {\bf 12}, 4263 (2021).]. Moreover, an anomaly was observed below $P$ = 0.6 GPa just below $H_{\rm sat}$ and might be a new phase transition derived from nonlinear response caused by the PDO technique., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures

The quest for high-temperature superconductivity at ambient pressure is a central issue in physics. In this regard, the relationship between unconventional superconductivity and the quantum critical point (QCP) associated with the suppression of some form of symmetry-breaking order to zero temperature has received particular attention. The key question is how the strength of the electron pairs changes near the QCP, and this can be verified by high-field experiments. However, such studies are limited mainly to superconductors with magnetic QCPs, and the possibility of unconventional mechanisms by which nonmagnetic QCP promotes strong pairing remains a nontrivial issue. Here, we report systematic measurements of the upper critical field $H_{{\rm c2}}$ in nonmagnetic FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$ superconductors, which exhibit a QCP of electronic nematicity characterized by spontaneous rotational-symmetry breaking. As the magnetic field increases, the superconducting phase of FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$ shrinks to a narrower dome surrounding the nematic QCP. The analysis of $H_{{\rm c2}}$ reveals that the Pauli-limiting field is enhanced toward the QCP, implying that the pairing interaction is significantly strengthened via nematic fluctuations emanated from the QCP. Remarkably, this nonmagnetic nematic QCP is not accompanied by a divergent effective mass, distinct from the magnetically mediated pairing. Frustrated magnets with a strong spin-lattice coupling can show rich magnetic phases and the associated fascinating phenomena. A promising platform is the breathing pyrochlore magnet CuInCr$_{4}$S$_{8}$ with localized $S=3/2$ Cr$^{3+}$ ions, which is proposed to be effectively viewed as an $S=6$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the face-centered-cubic lattice. Here, we unveil that CuInCr$_{4}$S$_{8}$ exhibits a complex magnetic phase diagram with a small phase pocket ($A$ phase) by means of magnetization, magnetostriction, magnetocapacitance, and magnetocaloric-effect measurements in pulsed high magnetic fields of up to 60 T. Remarkably, the appearance of $A$ phase is accompanied by anomalous magnetostrictive and magnetocapacitive responses, suggesting the emergence of helimagnetism in contrast to the neighboring commensurate magnetic phases. Besides, the high-entropy nature is confirmed in the high-temperature side of $A$ phase. These features are potentially related to a thermal fluctuation-driven multiple-$q$ state caused by the magnetic frustration, which has been theoretically predicted but yet experimentally undiscovered., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures. We have investigated the magnetic properties of Bi0.5Ca0.5MnO3 under ultrahigh magnetic fields by magnetization measurements. This compound shows the metamagnetic transition which indicates the magnetic field induced charge order melting at the room temperature T = 293 K. We reveled that the temperature dependence of the critical field, where the highest critical field is higher than 100 T. At low temperatures, it has been found that the metamagnetic transitions become broad and vanish in the field ascending process below 70 K. On the other hand, in the field descending process, a clear metamagnetic transition is observed even below 70 K. This unusual behavior can be understood as the gradual charge order melting by magnetic field, and its simultaneous reformation. A coexistence of multiple order parameters can account for the observed characteristic dynamics of the first order phase transition. Finally, we constructed the B-T phase diagram with the unusual critical feature at ultrahigh magnetic fields.

We studied the acoustic properties of liquid oxygen up to 90 T by means of ultrasound measurements. We observed a monotonic decrease of the sound velocity and an asymptotic increase of the sound attenuation when applying magnetic fields. The unusual attenuation, twenty times as large as the zero-field value, suggests strong fluctuations of the local molecular arrangement. We point out that the observed fluctuations are related to a liquid-liquid transition or crossover, from a small-magnetization to a large-magnetization liquid, which is characterized by a local-structure rearrangement. To investigate higher-field properties of liquid oxygen, we performed single-turn-coil experiments up to 180 T by means of the acoustic, dilatometric, magnetic, and optical techniques. The specific heat $C$ of the cuprate superconductors La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ and Bi$_{2+y}$Sr$_{2-x-y}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+\delta}$ was measured at low temperature (down to $0.5~{\rm K}$), for dopings $p$ close to $p^\star$, the critical doping for the onset of the pseudogap phase. A magnetic field up to $35~{\rm T}$ was applied to suppress superconductivity, giving direct access to the normal state at low temperature, and enabling a determination of $C_e$, the electronic contribution to the normal-state specific heat, at $T \to 0$. In La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ at $x=p = 0.22$, $0.24$ and $0.25$, $C_e / T = 15-16~{\rm mJmol}^{-1}{\rm K}^{-2}$ at $T = 2~{\rm K}$, values that are twice as large as those measured at higher doping ($p > 0.3$) and lower doping ($p < 0.15$). This confirms the presence of a broad peak in the doping dependence of $C_e$ at $p^\star\simeq 0.19$, as previously reported for samples in which superconductivity was destroyed by Zn impurities. Moreover, at those three dopings, we find a logarithmic growth as $T \to 0$, such that $C_e / T \sim {\rm B}\ln(T_0/T)$. The peak vs $p$ and the logarithmic dependence vs $T$ are the two typical thermodynamic signatures of quantum criticality. In the very different cuprate Bi$_{2+y}$Sr$_{2-x-y}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+\delta}$, we again find that $C_e / T \sim {\rm B}\ln(T_0/T$) at $p \simeq p^\star$, strong evidence that this $\ln(1/T)$ dependence - first discovered in the cuprates La$_{1.8-x}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ and La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ - is a universal property of the pseudogap critical point. All four materials display similar values of the $\rm B$ coefficient, indicating that they all belong to the same universality class., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

The entire magnetization process of TlCuCl$_3$ has been experimentally investigated up to 100 T employing the single-turn technique. The upper critical field $H_{c2}$ is observed to be 86.1 T at 2 K. A convex slope of the $M$-$H$ curve between the lower and upper critical fields ($H_{c1}$ and $H_{c2}$) is clearly observed, which indicates that a particle-hole symmetry is broken in TlCuCl$_3$. By quantum Monte Carlo simulation and the bond-operator theory method, we find that the particle-hole symmetry breaking results from strong inter-dimer interactions.

An osmium chloride with the chemical formula of OsxCl3 (x = 0.81) was synthesized and its crystal structure and thermodynamic properties were investigated. OsxCl3 crystallizes in a layered CdCl2-type structure with the triangular lattice partially occupied by Os ions on average. However, on microscopic length scales, the triangular lattice is composed of nano-domains with a honeycomb arrangement of Os ions, as observed by electron microscopy and Raman scattering experiments. Magnetization and heat capacity measurements revealed an absence of magnetic long-range order down to 0.08 K, while a broad peak in heat capacity at 0.15 K may indicate a short-range order in the local honeycomb lattice. OsxCl3 may exhibit certain aspects of the Kitaev spin liquid that are expected for a perfect honeycomb lattice of osmium trichloride., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

Combined experimental and modeling studies of the magnetocaloric effect, ultrasound, and magnetostriction were performed on single-crystal samples of the spin-dimer system Sr$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$ in large magnetic fields, to probe the spin-correlated regime in the proximity of the field-induced XY-type antiferromagnetic order also referred to as a Bose-Einstein condensate of magnons. The magnetocaloric effect, measured under adiabatic conditions, reveals details of the field-temperature ($H,T$) phase diagram, a dome characterized by critical magnetic fields $H_{c1}$ = 30.4 T, $H_{c2}$ = 62 T, and a single maximum ordering temperature $T_{{\rm max}}(45~$T$)\simeq$8 K. The sample temperature was observed to drop significantly as the magnetic field is increased, even for initial temperatures above $T_{{\rm max}}$, indicating a significant magnetic entropy associated to the field-induced closure of the spin gap. The ultrasound and magnetostriction experiments probe the coupling between the lattice degrees of freedom and the magnetism in Sr$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$. Our experimental results are qualitatively reproduced by a minimalistic phenomenological model of the exchange-striction by which sound waves renormalize the effective exchange couplings., Comment: 9 pages, 14 figures

High-resolution time-of-flight powder neutron diffraction and high-field magnetization were measured to investigate the magnetic structure and existence of a field-induced magnetic phase transition in the distorted kagome antiferromagnet Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$. Upon cooling from room temperature, the compound undergoes a structural phase transition at $T_\textrm{t}=185$ K from the rhombohedral space group $R\bar{3}m$ with the perfect kagome spin network to the monoclinic space group $P2_1/n$ with the distorted kagome planes. The distortion results in three inequivalent exchange interactions among the $S=1/2$ Cu$^{2+}$ spins that magnetically order below $T_\textrm{N}=20.2$ K. Magnetization measured with a magnetic field applied within the kagome plane reveals small in-plane ferromagnetism resulting from spin canting. On the other hand, the out-of-plane magnetization does not show a clear hysteresis loop of the ferromagnetic component nor a prominent anomaly up to 170 T, with the exception of the subtle knee-like bend around 90 T, which could indicate the 1/3 magnetization plateau. The combined analysis using the irreducible representations of the magnetic space groups and magnetic structure refinement on the neutron powder diffraction data suggests that the magnetic moments order in the magnetic space group $P2_1'/n'$ with the all-in-all-out spin structure, which by symmetry allows for the in-plane canting, consistent with the in-plane ferromagnetism observed in the magnetization., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, published version with typos corrected

Search for a new quantum state of matter emerging in a crystal is one of recent trends in condensed matter physics. For magnetic materials, geometrical frustration and high magnetic field are two key ingredients to realize it: a conventional magnetic order is possibly destroyed by competing interactions (frustration) and is replaced by an exotic state that is characterized in terms of quasiparticles, that are magnons, and the magnetic field can control the density and chemical potential of the magnons. Here we show that a synthetic copper mineral, Cd-kapellasite, comprising a kagome lattice made of corner-sharing triangles of Cu2+ ions carrying spin-1/2 exhibits an unprecedented series of fractional magnetization plateaux in ultrahigh magnetic fields up to 160 T, which may be interpreted as crystallizations of emergent magnons localized on the hexagon of the kagome lattice. We report a high-resolution terahertz spectroscopic study of quantum spin dynamics in the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg-Ising spin-chain compound BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ as a function of temperature and longitudinal magnetic field. Confined spinon excitations are observed in an antiferromagnetic phase below $T_N\simeq 5.5$ K. In a field-induced gapless phase above $B_c=3.8$ T, we identify many-body string excitations as well as low-energy fractional psinon/antipsinon excitations by comparing to Bethe-Ansatz calculations. In the vicinity of $B_c$, the high-energy string excitations are found to be dynamically dominant over the fractional excitations., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Magnetization, specific heat, and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements are carried out to clarify the low-energy excitations for the S = 1/2 polyhedral clusters {Mo$_{72}$V$_{30}$} and {W$_{72}$V$_{30}$}. The clusters provide unique model systems of Kagom\'e network on a quasi-sphere. The linear field variation of magnetization at low temperatures indicates that the ground state is singlet for both clusters. The temperature and the magnetic field dependence of specific heat shows a distinct difference between two clusters with differing structural symmetries. In {W$_{72}$V$_{30}$} with I$_h$ symmetry, the existence of the several tens of low-energy singlet excited states below the lowest triplet excited state is revealed. The specific heat of the slightly distorted {Mo$_{72}$V$_{30}$} with D$_{5h}$ symmetry leads to a drastic decrease of the singlet contribution, which is consistent with the partial lifting of the frustration and the decrease of degenerated low-energy states. The singlet excitation existence is confirmed further by the temperature dependence of the ESR spectra. Comprehensive experimental studies have demonstrated unique low-energy excitations of the spherical Kagom\'e networks and their sensitivity to the cluster symmetry.

We report on magnetization, sound velocity, and magnetocaloric-effect measurements of the Ising-like spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic chain system BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ as a function of temperature down to 1.3 K and applied transverse magnetic field up to 60 T. While across the N\'{e}el temperature of $T_N\sim5$ K anomalies in magnetization and sound velocity confirm the antiferromagnetic ordering transition, at the lowest temperature the field-dependent measurements reveal a sharp softening of sound velocity $v(B)$ and a clear minimum of temperature $T(B)$ at $B^{c,3D}_\perp=21.4$ T, indicating the suppression of the antiferromagnetic order. At higher fields, the $T(B)$ curve shows a broad minimum at $B^c_\perp = 40$ T, accompanied by a broad minimum in the sound velocity and a saturation-like magnetization. These features signal a quantum phase transition which is further characterized by the divergent behavior of the Gr\"{u}neisen parameter $\Gamma_B \propto (B-B^{c}_\perp)^{-1}$. By contrast, around the critical field, the Gr\"{u}neisen parameter converges as temperature decreases, pointing to a quantum critical point of the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model., Comment: Phys. The Kondo-lattice compound CeRhIn$_5$ displays a field-induced Fermi surface reconstruction at $B^*\approx30$ T, which occurs within the antiferromagnetic state, prior to the quantum critical point at $B_{c0}\approx50$ T. Here, in order to investigate the nature of the Fermi surface change, we measured the magnetostriction, specific heat, and magnetic torque of CeRhIn$_5$ across a wide range of magnetic fields. Our observations uncover the field-induced itineracy of the $4f$ electrons, where above $B_{\rm onset}\approx17$ T there is a significant enhancement of the Sommerfeld coefficient, and spin-dependent effective cyclotron masses determined from quantum oscillations. Upon crossing $B_{\rm onset}$, the temperature dependence of the specific heat also shows distinctly different behavior from that at low fields. Our results indicate that the Kondo coupling is remarkably robust upon increasing the magnetic field. Fedotovite K$_2$Cu$_3$O(SO$_4$)$_3$ is a candidate of new quantum spin systems, in which the edge-shared tetrahedral (EST) spin-clusters consisting of Cu$^{2+}$ are connected by weak inter-cluster couplings to from one-dimensional array. Comprehensive experimental studies by magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, heat capacity, and inelastic neutron scattering measurements reveal the presence of an effective $S$ = 1 Haldane state below $T \cong 4$ K. Rigorous theoretical studies provide an insight into the magnetic state of K$_2$Cu$_3$O(SO$_4$)$_3$: an EST cluster makes a triplet in the ground state and one-dimensional chain of the EST induces a cluster-based Haldane state. We predict that the cluster-based Haldene state emerges whenever the number of tetrahedra in the EST is $even$.

We demonstrate a close connection between observed field-induced antiferromagnetic (AFM) order and quantum critical fluctuation (QCF) in the Zn7%-doped heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5. Magnetization, specific heat, and electrical resistivity at low temperatures all show the presence of new field-induced AFM order under the magnetic field B of 5-10 T, whose order parameter is clearly distinguished from the low-field AFM phase observed for B < 5 T and the superconducting phase for B < 3 T. The 4f electronic specific heat divided by the temperature, C_e/T, exhibits -lnT dependence at B~10 T (= B_0), and furthermore, the C_e/T data for B >= B_0 are well scaled by the logarithmic function of B and T: ln[(B-B_0)/T^{2.7}]. These features are quite similar to the scaling behavior found in pure CeCoIn5, strongly suggesting that the field-induced QCF in pure CeCoIn5 originates from the hidden AFM order parameter equivalent to high-field AFM order in Zn7%-doped CeCoIn5., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Phys. We report on new results of a search for two-photon interaction with axionlike particles (ALPs). The experiment was carried out at a synchrotron radiation facility using a "light shining through a wall (LSW)" technique. For this purpose, we have developed a novel pulsed-magnet system, composed of multiple racetrack-magnets and a transportable power supply. It produces fields of about 10 T over 0.8 m with a high repetition rate of 0.2 Hz and yields a new method of probing vacuum with high intensity fields. The data obtained with a total of 27,676 pulses provide a limit on the ALP-two-photon coupling constant that is more stringent by a factor of 5.2 compared to a previous x-ray LSW limit for the ALP mass below 0.1 eV., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

We have developed a repeating pulsed magnet system which generates magnetic fields of about 10 T in a direction transverse to an incident beam over a length of 0.8 m with a repetition rate of 0.2 Hz. Its repetition rate is by two orders of magnitude higher than usual pulsed magnets. It is composed of four low resistance racetrack coils and a 30 kJ transportable capacitor bank as a power supply. The system aims at axion-like particle searches with a pulsed light source and vacuum birefringence measurements. We report on the anisotropic properties of Pauli-limited superconductivity (SC) and antiferromagnetism (AFM) in the solid solutions CeCo(In_{1-x}Zn_x)_5 (x<=0.07). In CeCo(In_{1-x}Zn_x)_5, the SC transition temperature T_c is continuously reduced from 2.3 K (x=0) to ~1.4 K (x=0.07) by doping Zn, and then the AFM order with the transition temperature of T_N~2.2 K develops for x larger than ~0.05. The present thermal, transport and magnetic measurements under magnetic field B reveal that the substitution of Zn for In yields little change of low-temperature upper critical field \mu_0H_{c2} for both the tetragonal a and c axes, while it monotonically reduces the SC transition temperature T_c. In particular, the magnitudes of \mu_0H_{c2} at the nominal Zn concentration of x = 0.05 (measured Zn amount of ~0.019) are 11.8 T for B||a and 4.8 T for B||c, which are as large as those of pure compound though T_c is reduced to 80% of that for x=0. We consider that this feature originates from a combination of both an enhanced AFM correlation and a reduced SC condensation energy in these alloys. It is also clarified that the AFM order differently responds to the magnetic field, depending on the field directions. For B||c, the clear anomaly due to the AFM transition is observed up to the AFM critical field of ~5 T in the thermodynamic quantities, whereas it is rapidly damped with increasing B for B||a. We discuss this anisotropic response on the basis of a rich variety of the AFM modulations involved in the Ce115 compounds., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

The ordered hexagonal perovskite Ba2CuTeO6 hosts weakly coupled S=1/2 spin ladders produced by an orbital ordering of Cu2+. The magnetic susceptibility chi(T) of Ba2CuTeO6 is well described by that expected for isolated spin ladders with exchange coupling of J~86 K but shows a deviation from the expected thermally activated behavior at low temperatures below T*~25 K. An anomaly in chi(T), indicative of magnetic ordering, is observed at T_mag=16 K. No clear signature of long-range ordering, however, is captured in NMR, specific heat or neutron diffraction measurements at and below T_mag. The marginal magnetic transition, indicative of strong quantum fluctuations, is evidence that Ba2CuTeO6 is in very close proximity to a quantum critical point between a magnetically ordered phase and a gapped spin liquid controlled by inter-ladder couplings., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. We have synthesized high-quality single crystals of volborthite, a seemingly distorted kagome antiferromagnet, and carried out high-field magnetization measurements up to 74 T and 51V NMR measurements up to 30 T. An extremely wide 1/3 magnetization plateau appears above 28 T and continues over 74 T at 1.4 K, which has not been observed in previous study using polycrystalline samples. NMR spectra reveal an incommensurate order (most likely a spin-density wave order) below 22 T and a simple spin structure in the plateau phase. Moreover, a novel intermediate phase is found between 23 and 26 T, where the magnetization varies linearly with magnetic field and the NMR spectra indicate an inhomogeneous distribution of the internal magnetic field. This sequence of phases in volborthite bear a striking similarity to those of frustrated spin chains with a ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor coupling J1 competing with an antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor coupling J2., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

We present the high-precision magnetization data of the valence fluctuating heavy fermion superconductor $\beta$-YbAlB$_4$ in a wide temperature range from 0.02 K to 320 K spanning four orders of magnitude. We made detailed analyses of the $T/B$ scaling of the magnetization, and firmly confirmed the unconventional zero-field quantum criticality (QC) without tuning. We examined other possible scaling relationship such as $T/(B-B_c)^{\delta}$ scaling, and confirmed that $\delta = 1$ provides the best quality of the fit with an upper bound on the critical magnetic field $\vert B_c \vert <0.2$~mT. We further discuss the heavy Fermi-liquid component of the magnetization after subtracting the QC component estimated based on the $T/B$ scaling. The temperature dependence of the heavy Fermi-liquid component is found very similar to the magnetization of the polymorph $\alpha$-YbAlB$_4$. In addition, the heavy Fermi-liquid component is suppressed in the magnetic field above $\sim$ 5 T as in $\alpha$-YbAlB$_4$. This was also confirmed by the magnetization measurements up to $\sim 50$ T for both $\alpha$- and $\beta$-YbAlB$_4$. Interestingly, the detailed analyses revealed that the only a part of $f$ electrons participates in the zero-field QC and the heavy fermion behavior. A spin-singlet ground state with a spin gap has been discovered in antiferromagnetic spin chain substances when the spin value is 1/2, 1 or 2. To find spin gap (singlet-triplet) excitations in spin-3/2 chain substances, we performed inelastic neutron scattering and magnetization measurements on {\it R}CrGeO$_5$ ({\it R} = Y or Sm) powders. As expected, we observed spin gap excitations and the dispersion relation of the lowest magnetic excitations. We have succeeded in synthesizing single crystals of the verdazyl radical beta-2,6-Cl2-V [= beta-3-(2,6-dichlorophenyl)-1,5-diphenylverdazyl]. The ab initio MO calculation indicated the formation of an S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with four-fold magnetic periodicity consisting of three types of exchange interactions.We have successfully explained the magnetic and thermodynamic properties based on the expected spin model by using the quantum Monte Carlo method. Furthermore, we revealed that the alternating and unique Ising ferromagnetic chains become effective in the specific field regions and observed a cooperative phenomenon caused by the magnetic order and quantum fluctuations. These results demonstrate that verdazyl radical could form unconventional spin model with interesting quantum behavior and provide a new way to study a variety of quantum spin systems., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

The magnetic and dielectric properties under high magnetic fields are studied in the single crystal of Cu3Mo2O9. This multiferroic compound has distorted tetrahedral spin chains. The effects of the quasi-one dimensionality and the geometrical spin frustration are expected to appear simultaneously. We measure the magnetoelectric current and the differential magnetization under the pulsed magnetic field up to 74 T. We also measure the electric polarization versus the electric field curve/loop under the static field up to 23 T. Dielectric properties change at the magnetic fields where the magnetization jumps are observed in the magnetization curve. Low-temperature specific heat of CaRu1-xMnxO3 was measured to clarify the role of d electrons in ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic orders observed above x=0.2. Specific heat divided by temperature C_p/T is found to roughly follow a T^2 function, and relatively large magnitudes of electronic specific heat coefficient gamma were obtained in wide x range. In particular, gamma is unchanged from the value at x=0 (84 mJ/K^2 mol) in the paramagnetic state for x<=0.1, but linearly reduced with increasing x above x= 0.2. These features of gamma strongly suggest that itinerant d electrons are tightly coupled with the evolution of magnetic orders in small and intermediate Mn concentrations., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, to be published in J. The valence state of Ce in a canonical heavy fermion compound CeRu2Si2 has been investigated by synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy at 1.8 K in high magnetic fields of up to 40 T. The valence was slightly larger than for the pure trivalent state (Ce3+: f1), as expected in heavy fermion compounds, and it decreased toward the trivalent state as the magnetic field was increased. The field-induced valence reduction indicates that the itinerant character of the 4f electrons in CeRu2Si2 was suppressed by a strong magnetic field. The suppression was gradual and showed characteristic magnetic field dependence, which reflects the metamagnetism around Hm \sim 8 T. The itinerant character persisted, even at 40 T (\sim 5Hm), suggesting that the Kondo bound state is continuously broken by magnetic fields and that it should completely collapse at fields exceeding 200 T., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication as a Rapid Communication in Physical Review B

Topological states of matter challenge the paradigm of symmetry breaking, characterized by gapless boundary modes and protected by the topological property of the ground state. Recently, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has revealed that semiconductors of Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ and Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ belong to such a class of materials. Here, we present undisputable evidence for the existence of gapless surface Dirac fermions from transport in Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$. We observe Sondheimer oscillation in magnetoresistance (MR). This oscillation originates from the quantization of motion due to the confinement of electrons within the surface layer. Based on Sondheimer's transport theory, we determine the thickness of the surface state from the oscillation data. In addition, we uncover the topological nature of the surface state, fitting consistently both the non-oscillatory part of MR and the Hall resistance. The side-jump contribution turns out to dominate around 1 T in Hall resistance while the Berry-curvature effect dominates in 3 T $\sim$ 4 T.

A phase transition of a model compound of the long-range Ising spin glass (SG) Dy$_{x}$Y$_{1-x}$Ru$_{2}$Si$_{2}$, where spins interact via the RKKY interaction, has been investigated. The static and the dynamic scaling analyses reveal that the SG phase transition in the model magnet belongs to the mean-field universality class. Moreover, the characteristic relaxation time in finite magnetic fields exhibits a critical divergent behavior as well as in zero field, indicating a stability of the SG phase in finite fields. The presence of the SG phase transition in field in the model magnet strongly syggests that the replica symmetry is broken in the long-range Ising SG., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to be published in JPSJ (2010)

Pb2V3O9 was found to have antiferromagnetic alternating chains of S=1/2 and show the antiferromagnetic long range ordered (AFLRO) state under the magnetic field between 4 and 38 T. We succeeded in growing single crystals of Pb2V3O9 by floating zone method and determined the asymmetric H-T phase diagram of Pb2V3O9 from measurements of the magnetization and the heat capacity. Previous reports focused on the AFLRO state in the low magnetic field region and that in high magnetic field region was not discussed so much. In this paper, we examined the AFLRO state in terms of the mean field theory and the picture of Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons to discuss the whole phase diagram. Consequently, the asymmetry of the phase boundary in Pb2V3O9 is explained by the mixing contribution of excited states and by interchain interactions., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures

We have investigated magnetic field dependences of a ferroelectric incommensurate-helimagnetic order in a trigonal magneto-electric (ME) multiferroic CuFe1-xAlxO2 with x=0.015, which exhibits the ferroelectric phase as a ground state, by means of neutron diffraction, magnetization and dielectric polarization measurements under magnetic fields applied along various directions. From the present results, we have established the H-T magnetic phase diagrams for the three principal directions of magnetic fields; (i) parallel to the c axis, (ii) parallel to the helical axis, and (iii) perpendicular to the c and the helical axes. While the previous dielectric polarization (P) measurements on CuFe1-xGaxO2 with x=0.035 have demonstrated that the magnetic field dependence of the `magnetic domain structure' results in distinct magnetic field responses of P [S. Seki et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 103 237601 (2009)], the present study have revealed that the anisotropic magnetic field dependence of the ferroelectric helimagnetic order `in each magnetic domain' can be also a source of a variety of magnetic field responses of P in CuFe1-xAxO2 systems (A=Al, Ga)., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. We have investigated a phase transition of a long-range RKKY Ising spin glass \dyyrusi by means of the dc and the ac magnetization measurements. The static nonlinear susceptibility $\chi_{2}$ exhibits a divergent behavior toward $\Tg$ $=$ 1.925 K with the exponent of $\gamma$ $=$ 1.08. The characteristic relaxation time $\tau$ obtained from the ac magnetization measurements also diverges to the same $\Tg$ with the exponent of $z\nu$ $=$ 1.9 in zero static field . These results indicate the spin glass phase transition belonging to the mean-field universality class, in which the exponents of $\gammaMF$ and $\znuMF$ are 1 and 2 respectively. Moreover, we observed the divergence of $\tau$ in a finite field of 500 Oe toward $\Tg$ $=$ 1.412 K with the exponent of $z\nu$ $=$ 2.1, being quite similar to that in zero field. It strongly suggests an existence of the spin glass phase transition in a finite field and the replica symmetry breaking (RSB) in the long-range Ising spin glass \dyyrusi., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, to be published in J. Low-temperature electronic states in SrRu_{1-x}Mn_xO_3 for x <= 0.6 have been investigated by means of specific-heat C_p measurements. We have found that a jump anomaly observed in C_p at the ferromagnetic (FM) transition temperature for SrRuO_3 changes into a broad peak by only 5% substitution of Mn for Ru. With further doping Mn, the low-temperature electronic specific-heat coefficient gamma is markedly reduced from the value at x=0 (33 mJ/K^2 mol), in connection with the suppression of the FM phase as well as the enhancement of the resistivity. For x >= 0.4, gamma approaches to ~ 5 mJ/K^2 mol or less, where the antiferromagnetic order with an insulating feature in resistivity is generated. High-field magnetization, M($H$), on Ni$_{5}$(TeO$_{3}$)$_{4}$X$_{2}$ (X = Br and Cl) were measured by using a pulse magnet. These compounds have a two dimensional crystal structure and a distorted kagome spin frustrated system which is builded by the Ni$^{2+}$ ions ($\textbf{S}$ = 1). The N\'eel transition temperatures are $T_{N} \sim$ 28 and 23 K for X = Br and Cl, respectively. When $T < T_{N}$, we observed a step-like transition at $H_{c} \sim$ 11 and 10 T for X = Br and Cl, respectively. On the other hand, at $T > T_{N}$, the field-dependent magnetization curves behaved like a monotonically increasing straight line up to 55 T. The $H_{c}$ value is close to those obtained by previous spin resonance studies in which a model of spin-flop scenario was proposed to explain the field-dependent resonance spectra. Their model predicts a further transition at around 23 T, however, our observations did not show any plateau behaviors, saturation or other anomalies up to 55 T, suggesting that the further transition possibly exists at a much higher field region., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Hexagonal antiferromagnets Cs$_2$Cu$_3$MF$_{12}$ (M = Zr, Hf and Sn) have uniform Kagome lattices of Cu$^{2+}$ with S = 1/2, whereas Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ has a 2a by 2a enlarged cell as compared with the uniform Kagome lattice. The crystal data of Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ synthesized first in the present work are reported. We performed magnetic susceptibility measurements on this family of Kagome antiferromagnet using single crystals. In the Cs$_2$Cu$_3$MF$_{12}$ systems, structural phase transitions were observed at $T_t = 225$ K, 172 K and 185 K for M = Zr, Hf and Sn, respectively. The magnetic susceptibilities observed for $T > T_t$ are almost perfectly described using theoretical results obtained by exact diagonalization for the 24-site Kagome cluster with $J/k_B = 244$ K, 266 K and 240 K, respectively. Magnetic ordering accompanied by the weak ferromagnetic moment occurs at $T_N = 23.5$ K, 24.5 K and 20.0 K, respectively. The origins of the weak ferromagnetic moment should be ascribed to the lattice distortion that breaks the hexagonal symmetry of the exchange network for $T < T_t$ and the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction. Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ is magnetically described as a modified Kagome antiferromagnet with four types of neighboring exchange interaction. Neither structural nor magnetic phase transition was observed in Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$. Its magnetic ground state was found to be a spin singlet with a triplet gap. Using exact diagonalization for a 12-site Kagome cluster, we analyzed the magnetic susceptibility and evaluated individual exchange interactions. The causes leading to the different ground states in Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ and Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ are discussed., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures. Submitted to Physical Review B. We synthesized single crystals of the new hexagonal compounds A$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ with A=Cs and Rb, and investigated their magnetic properties. These compounds are composed of Kagom\'{e} layers of corner-sharing CuF$_6$-octahedra. Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ has the proper Kagom\'{e} layer at room temperature, and undergoes structural phase transition at $T_\mathrm{t}\simeq 185$ K. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility in Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ agrees well with the result of the numerical calculation for $S=1/2$ two-dimensional Heisenberg Kagom\'{e} antiferromagnet down to $T_\mathrm{t}$ with the nearest exchange interaction $J/k_\mathrm{B}\simeq 240$ K. Although the magnetic susceptibility deviates from the calculated result below $T

From neutron diffraction measurements on a quasi-1D Ising-like Co$^{\rm 2+}$ spin compound BaCo$_{\rm 2}$V$_{\rm 2}$O$_{\rm 8}$, we observed an appearance of a novel type of incommensurate ordering in magnetic fields. This ordering is essentially different from the N{\' e}el-type ordering, which is expected for the classical system, and is caused by quantum fluctuation inherent in the quantum spin chain. A Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) nature characteristic of the gapless quantum 1D system is responsible for the realization of the incommensurate ordering., Comment: 4pages, 4figure
