20. Estimating roadkill rates while accounting for carcass detection and persistence using open-population capture–recapture models.

- Abstract
Context. Accurately estimating wildlife roadkill is necessary to compare differentroads, periods, and species, and to plan and assess mitigation effectiveness. We must account for the two main sources of errors associated with carcass sampling – carcass detection and persistence. Open-population models are used to estimate abundance, survival probabilities, and recruitment in living animal populations, accounting for imperfect detection, and they can be used in the context of animal fatalities. Aims. The aim of this study was to explore an open-population approach to estimate comparable roadkill rates from carcass capture–recapture data, accounting for carcass detection and persistence. Methods. We surveyed carcasses of the white-eared opossum (Didelphis albiventris) and blackand-white tegu lizard (Salvator merianae) on four road stretches using two sampling designs with different number of visits and sampling sessions. Carcasses were marked to be recaptured over visits within the same sampling session,resulting in a capture history for each carcass. Encounter history data were modelled using the superpopulation formulation of the open-population capture–recapture model under Bayesian inference for different datasets. A daily roadkill rate per kilometre was derived from the model entry probability estimate. Key results. We estimated a daily roadkillrate with 1501 captures from 447 opossum carcasses and 511 captures from 218 tegu carcasses. For full data, mean carcass detection overthe sessionsranged from 0.49 to 0.85 forthe opossum and from 0.27 to 0.80 for the tegu, and mean carcass persistence ranged from 0.60 to 0.94 forthe opossum and from 0.64 to 0.91 for the tegu. Scenarios with more occasions and captures increased precision of roadkill rates. Conclusions. We were able to explicitly estimate roadkill rates using an open-population capture– recapture model under a Bayesian framework. It provides accurate roadkill numbers for a known time frame and road extension, accounting for imperfect detection and its associated uncertainty. Under scenarios of few carcasses, users should consider a higher number of occasions. Implications. Not addressing carcass sampling errors or simplistically addressing them (e.g. only once during the study period) could mislead mitigation efforts. The approach used here can be used to estimate fatalities in other locations, such as windfarms and powerlines, for which repeated observations of marked carcasses are an option. - Abstract
Large herbivores—such as the South American marsh deer—are one of the groups more threatened with extinction, with their disappearance having severe consequences for entire ecosystems. Methods to estimate abundance of large herbivores robustly and efficiently are fundamental to evaluate the status and monitor fluctuations of their populations in time, as well as identify key areas for conservation planning. Here, we (i) explore the use of spatiotemporally replicated drone-based counts analysed with N-mixture models to estimate the abundance of large herbivores; and (ii) investigate how the local abundance of marsh deer varies in the landscape, for the dry season in the Pantanal wetland (Brazil). We fitted marsh deer drone-based counts using binomial and multinomial N-mixture models (for single and double observer protocols respectively) and modelled local abundance in relation to vegetation greenness, distance to water bodies, and jaguar density. Marsh deer local abundance presented a strong relation with what is expected to be the high-quality areas for the species: high levels of vegetation greenness (that are expected to provide high-quality forage) and close to water bodies. We identified key areas for the population in the remaining humid environments and, in the drier region, close to artificial water bodies. Spatiotemporally replicated drone-based counts may serve as an accessible and cost-effective protocol to estimate abundance and monitor large herbivores while accounting for imperfect detection.

1. Hierarchical N-mixture models have been suggested for abundance estimation from spatiotemporally replicated drone-based count surveys, since they allow modeling abundance of unmarked individuals while accounting for detection errors. However, it is still necessary to understand how these models perform in the wide variety of contexts and species in which drone surveys are being used. This knowledge is fundamental to plan study designs with optimal allocation of scarce resources in ecology and conservation., 2. We conduct a simulation study to address N-mixture model (binomial and multinomial) performance and optimal survey effort allocation in different scenarios of local abundance and detectability of individuals, focusing on their application for drone-based surveys. We also investigate the benefits of using a double-observer protocol (either human or algorithm) in image review to decompose the detection process in availability and perception. Finally, we illustrate our simulation-based survey design considerations by applying them to abundance estimation of marsh deer in the Pantanal wetland (Brazil)., 3. Accuracy of abundance estimation with N-mixture models increases with local abundance in sites and especially with the availability of individuals. The optimal design requires more visits at fewer sites when the availability probability is lower, and the optimal design is more flexible as local abundance increases. Two observers checking images can increase the estimator performance even at very high perception probabilities. We quantified how much the use of a double-observer protocol in image review can reduce fieldwork effort while achieving the same accuracy., 4. N-mixture models can deliver accurate abundance estimates from spatiotemporally replicated drone surveys in a wide variety of contexts while accounting for imperfect detection. The improvements achieved by a consciously planned design, rearranging survey efforts among sites and visits, as well as using a second observer in image review, can be crucial to detect trends when monitoring a population or to categorize a species as threatened or not.

Invasive species pose significant threats to ecosystems and biodiversity, necessitating effective management strategies to mitigate their impacts. One such invasive species of concern is the wild boar in Brazil, which has the potential to cause widespread environmental changes. A national plan for monitoring and controlling invasive species, including the wild boar, was developed in response to this threat. Despite this initiative, uncertainties persist regarding the presence of wild boars in protected areas (PAs) and the effectiveness of current management actions. This study intends to diagnose the situation of wild boars in protected areas within the southern region of Brazil, specifically focusing on their distribution, management techniques employed, and reasons for the lack of management actions. An online questionnaire was sent to 297 PAs, with 134 responding. The findings revealed that wild boars were present in 36 surveyed PAs, but management efforts were only being carried out in 14 of them. Cages and corrals were identified as the most commonly used techniques, with corn serving as the preferred bait. The study identified two primary reasons for the lack of management actions: the wild boar's low invasion intensity and management capacity limitations. To address these challenges effectively, this study advocates for a centralized organization of management actions and emphasizes the development of materials and resources to support successful management strategies. Implementing these measures is essential to safeguard the conservation of ecosystems and vulnerable species in Brazil's protected areas and ensure the long-term resilience of these valuable ecological assets. Understanding spatiotemporal patterns of roadkill is challenging but essential for mitigation. Spatiotemporal roadkill patterns are seldom studied for single species at broad scales. We evaluated the spatiotemporal variation of roadkill of the water snake Helicops infrataeniatus (Squamata, Dipsadidae) in three Brazilian roads stretching 540 km and spanning up to 6 years of monitoring. We modelled the effect of sampling effort, evaluation scale and sample size on hotspot location over the years and evaluated hotspot persistence between roads at different evaluation scales. We also assessed the annual variability of roadkill hot moments within roads and tested if fatality was synchronous between roads. We correlated hotspots obtained with different evaluation scales and levels of sampling effort with those in a reference dataset built with fatality events from all sampling years. Coarser evaluation scales had a positive effect on correlation values, but the interaction between evaluation scale and sampling effort and the main effect of the latter differed between roads. Hotspot persistence over the years differed with road identity and increased with evaluation scales. Hot moments changed annually within roads and were concentrated in the warmest seasons of the year. Despite the ephemerality of hotspots within roads, fatality was synchronous between roads. Spatiotemporal variation of roadkills may reflect environmental, behavioural or populational changes at multiple scales. We suggest that both permanent and temporal mitigation strategies may be used according to spatiotemporal characteristics of hotspots. Our study exemplifies how synchrony studies can provide clues to understand roadkill patterns and improve mitigation planning at regional scales. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

International audience; Xenarthrans—anteaters, sloths, and armadillos—have essential functions forecosystem maintenance, such as insect control and nutrient cycling, playing key roles as ecosys-tem engineers. Because of habitat loss and fragmentation, hunting pressure, and conflicts withdomestic dogs, these species have been threatened locally, regionally, or even across their fulldistribution ranges. The Neotropics harbor 21 species of armadillos, 10 anteaters, and 6 sloths.Our data set includes the families Chlamyphoridae (13), Dasypodidae (7), Myrmecophagidae(3), Bradypodidae (4), and Megalonychidae (2). We have no occurrence data onDasypus pilo-sus(Dasypodidae). Regarding Cyclopedidae, until recently, only one species was recognized,but new genetic studies have revealed that the group is represented by seven species. In thisdata paper, we compiled a total of 42,528 records of 31 species, represented by occurrence andquantitative data, totaling 24,847 unique georeferenced records. The geographic range is fromthe southern United States, Mexico, and Caribbean countries at the northern portion of theNeotropics, to the austral distribution in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. Regardinganteaters,Myrmecophaga tridactylahas the most records (n=5,941), andCyclopessp. havethe fewest (n=240). The armadillo species with the most data isDasypus novemcinctus(n=11,588), and the fewest data are recorded forCalyptophractus retusus(n=33). Withregard to sloth species,Bradypus variegatushas the most records (n=962), andBradypus pyg-maeushas the fewest (n=12). Our main objective with Neotropical Xenarthrans is to makeoccurrence and quantitative data available to facilitate more ecological research, particularly ifwe integrate the xenarthran data with other data sets of Neotropical Series that will become available very soon (i.e., Neotropical Carnivores, Neotropical Invasive Mammals, andNeotropical Hunters and Dogs). Therefore, studies on trophic cascades, hunting pressure,habitat loss, fragmentation effects, species invasion, and climate change effects will be possiblewith the Neotropical Xenarthrans data set. Extreme wildfire events, such as the Pantanal 2020 megafires, are expected to become more common. Assessing the impacts of such extreme events on wildlife is imperative for conservation planning. Direct observation of carcasses can provide valuable information on how these impacts relate to spatial heterogeneity. Here, we use double‐observer carcass surveys to assess the numbers and spatial patterns of direct mortalities of medium‐ to large‐sized mammals resulting from the Pantanal 2020 megafires in a large reserve (1080 km2) in the northern Pantanal wetland. Accounting for imperfect detection, we model the spatial variation in mortality occurrence and abundance, testing the effects of habitat‐related variables and wildfire severity using multi‐species N‐mixture models. We found that 26 out of 27 species of medium and large‐sized mammals died from the fires with a mean estimate of around 49 thousand individuals. The most affected species included capuchin monkeys, agoutis, peccaries, tapirs, brocket deer, tamanduas, coatis and capybaras. Direct mortality of mammals by wildfires was affected by landscape factors related to species habitats, species traits (probably related to escape or refuge strategies), and the intensity of the wildfires. Mortalities presented a general positive relationship with non‐flooded forests (a fire‐sensitive habitat in Pantanal) and with the severity of wildfires. Artificial water bodies, a common landscape structure in Pantanal, had 7.5 times more deaths than other areas. Synthesis and applications: With the approach used, we were able to: (i) identify mortality hotspots associated with landscape features; (ii) simultaneously identify the most affected species and assess the average relationships for all the assemblage of medium‐ and large‐sized mammals. We discuss conservation and management actions in two contexts: species prioritization for rescuing and monitoring; and territory prioritization for fire prevention and fighting. Como consequência da ampliação do setor energético e da instalação de novas linhas de transmissão de energia (LTs), as aves estão expostas a um risco crescente de mortalidade direta em virtude da colisão com essas estruturas. Com o propósito de minimizar as colisões, sinalizadores de avifauna são instalados nos cabos para-raios das LTs. Buscamos testar a efi ciência dos sinalizadores por meio de observações da alteração no comportamento de voo de aves avaliado em nível de famílias taxonômicas. Consideramos duas variáveis de exposição ao risco de colisão - posição do voo de transposição da linha e distância perpendicular em relação aos cabos – observadas em vãos sinalizados e não sinalizados de uma LT localizada no litoral norte do Rio Grande do Sul – Brasil. Realizamos o teste Qui- Quadrado (α = 0,05) para as duas variáveis de risco e para cada família em separado. Das famílias analisadas (n = 13), somente uma (Hirundinidae) apresentou alteração do comportamento de voo na presença dos sinalizadores. Apesar da sinalização dos cabos ser indicada como a medida mais apropriada para a mitigação dessas fatalidades, nossos resultados não revelaram isso quando avaliados em nível de família. No entanto, antes de abandonar essa estratégia de mitigação, nós discutimos a necessidade da aplicação de meta-análises para verifi car a efetividade desses dispositivos nas LTs instaladas no Brasil, assim como a necessidade de aperfeiçoamento nos desenhos amostrais dos estudos de monitoramentos dessas infraestruturas. Bird fl ight behavior in response to marked wire use in power transmission lines. As a result of the expansion of the energy sector and the subsequent installation of new power transmission lines (LTs), birds are increasingly exposed to the risk of direct mortality due to collision with these structures. In order to minimize collisions, bird fl ight diverters are fi xed in the static wire. We tested, with an indirect measure, the eff ectiveness of this dispositive by means of observations of the alteration of the fl ight behavior in distinct bird families. We considered two risk variables - position of the line transposition fl ight and fl ight distance in relation to the cables - observed on mitigated and unmitigated spans of a LT located on the north coast of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. We used chi-square test (α = 0.05) for the two risk variables and for each family separately to test for diff erences in behavior responses to fl ight diverters. Out of 13 families, only Hirundinidae showed risk avoidance fl ight behavior on mitigated lines. Despite the wire marking be indicated as the most appropriate measure to mitigate these fatalities, our behavioral study do not supported this claim, at the family level. However, before their abandonment we discuss the need of a meta-analysis of their eff ectiveness on Brazilian TLs as well improvements needed in monitoring study designs.
