The connection between the name "Daryl Siedentop" and the model "Sport Education" has evolved over the past three decades to become a prominent brand of physical education. This paper attempts to capture the influence of Sport Education, not only within school physical education, but in ways and arenas far beyond Daryl's original imagination. It is now used in university physical education courses and teacher preparation programs, in summer camps, and there is evidence of some use in after-school and community sports settings. This evolution has manifest pedagogical iterations of the model far beyond the essential features articulated in his initial vision, and teachers, students, prospective teachers, and coaches have all found a renewed vigor in their sport experience. The paper describes some of these "beyond" iterations of the model as a tribute to how Sport Education has served to realize multiple objectives for multiple practitioners in ways beyond his original aspirations.

Purposes: (a) To describe how more experienced and expert teachers interpreted and delivered sport education (SE) during their careers and (b) to discover and describe factors within their occupational socialization that sustained the teachers' enthusiasm for and ability to deliver SE. Method: Participants were nine teachers. Primary data sources were formal interviews. Secondary supporting sources were documents and film. They were analyzed by employing standard interpretive methods. Credibility and trustworthiness were established through a search for discrepant and negative cases and member checking. Findings: At different times in their careers, the teachers delivered SE in one of four ways: watered down, through a cafeteria approach, the full version, and the full+ version. A number of factors from their acculturation, professional socialization, and organizational socialization enabled the teachers to deliver the full+ version or led to them delivering other versions of the model. Conclusions: The findings allow us to make practical suggestions for preservice and inservice teacher education that may help university faculty facilitate the teaching of SE.

The purpose of this study was to describe the acculturation of six British physical education (PE) preservice teachers (PSTs). The research questions we sought to answer were: (a) What were the PSTs' values, beliefs, and perspectives regarding PE? and (b) What factors shaped the PSTs' values, beliefs, and perspectives during their acculturation? We collected data with three types of formal interviewing and employed standard interpretive techniques to reduce the data to themes. Key findings were that the PSTs aspired to a career teaching secondary PE, possessed a balanced orientation to teaching curricular PE and coaching extracurricular sport, and espoused a mostly traditional multi-activity curriculum that was dominated by sport. The main attractors to a career in PE were the opportunity to maintain a connection with sport and working with youth. The key shaper of the PSTs' perspectives was their apprenticeships of observation. These findings should aid sport pedagogy faculty in their efforts to produce stronger initial teacher education programs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article reports on a project investigating the use of social media within physical education teacher education (PETE). It specifically describes how a professional Facebook group was set up and used by PETE students in one university in England and another in the United States. The article outlines some of the professional topics the respective student teachers discussed and shares some of their reactions to the experience. The use of social media offers a forum for student teachers that aligns with contemporary thinking around informal professional learning and development.

Recent reviews illustrate the considerable literature on Sport Education. However, research on the experiences of non-specialist physical education teachers attempting Sport Education is limited. The focus of this research was to investigate non-specialist teachers' views on Sport Education and identify what possibilities might exist regarding Sport Education in the context of primary schooling. Eight teachers (four males and four females) from four primary schools in Ireland volunteered to take part in this study. Following in-service in Sport Education, all teachers delivered a unit of work in their schools. Data were collected using individual teacher and focus-group interviews, and each was visited during implementation. Findings indicated Sport Education was an entirely new teaching and learning experience for these teachers which they found to be professionally rewarding and pedagogically refreshing. Teachers discussed high levels of enjoyment displayed by their pupils. An enthusiasm for exploring the integrative potential for Sport Education was evident, and many teachers wished for more examples of how the characteristics of Sport Education could be further integrated across the primary curriculum.

Background: While there is considerable literature on Sport Education, little attention has been afforded to an investigation into the use of a specific festival as a culmination to a season. Aims: The purpose of this paper is to examine primary school pupils' and teachers' perceptions of an inter-school festival. Methods: Pupils from eight classes in four Irish primary schools participated in a 3-month season employing the Sport Education Curriculum Model. A modified invasion game provided the activity focus. Interview data were collected from pupils and teachers prior to, during and after the festival. Results: Results indicated that prior to the festival, pupils were, while excited and looking forward to the festival, not certain about what the day would entail. During the festival pupils reported how their team was performing and discussed elements of the festival they enjoyed most. Post-festival, pupils focused on their team's performance and spoke positively about their memories of the day. Teachers reported the success of the festival in maintaining pupils' interest with pupils keen to prepare their teams to play against other schools. Conclusions: This study might offer some direction and possibilities to those working in youth and community sport settings who may wish to transfer sport experiences along the lines of the Sport Education approach from a school context into these specific sport cultures. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which newly qualified teachers employed the Sport Education (SE) model. In addition, we attempted to discover factors that led to and facilitated beginning teachers employing the model and those that did not. Participants were six American and four British beginning teachers. Data were collected by formally interviewing each teacher. Analysis procedures employed were analytic induction and constant comparison. Occupational socialization was the theoretical framework that guided data collection and analysis procedures. The results indicated that teachers interpreted and delivered SE in one of three different ways: "full version, watered down version and cafeteria style". Moreover, the teachers' acculturation, professional socialization and organizational socialization largely explained why teachers interpreted and delivered SE as they did. The development of feelings of identity, the sense of belonging to a team, and the growth of social skills are experiences that sport, if properly conducted, is well placed to offer (Siedentop, 1994). Evidence suggests that some characteristics of traditional, multiactivity forms of physical education work against realizing these goals (Locke, 1992). Siedentop's Sport Education (SE) model is one attempt to overcome this shortcoming by recasting units as seasons and maintaining persisting groups as teams throughout the season. Extended units intended to foster team affiliation while promoting affective and social development are common objectives in physical education. We report on a 16-week SE unit that includes over 70 Year-5 students (9- to 10-year-olds) from one UK school. Our findings show that the opportunity to become affiliated with a team was an attractive feature of the pupils' physical education experience and that, under the framework of SE, there was an obvious investment made by the Year-5 Forest Gate students in relation to their sense of identity and involvement as members of a persisting group.

While there have been frequent calls for reform in secondary physical education, little research has focused on the implementation and assessment of curriculum from the perspective of students. Drawing upon the theoretical frame of student resistance, the purpose of this study was to describe how high school students demonstrated support for and resistance to implementation of a 20-day curricular initiative termed a Cultural Studies unit. This approach consists of an integrated practical and theoretical study of sport and physical activity. Data were collected through student focus group interviews, student journals, nonparticipant observations, and informal conversations. Students responded favorably to the principles of Sport Education and the opportunities to critique issues of social justice. Such content was considered appropriate for physical education. Resistance to some aspects of the unit was both overt and covert. Meticulous and careful planning of content and choice of pedagogy to facilitate delivery is crucial to positioning a Cultural Studies unit in a high school program. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article present nine strategies that have been used successfully to improve activity levels in PE classes. These strategies comprise small-sided games, school warm-ups, rule adaptations, quick transitions, rewards, resources, teacher challenges, teaching by invitation and technology. The article presents a study regarding the use of sport education in the classroom setting. It notes that the study's reviews of the literature reveal the positive impact of Sport Education on the physical education learners and teachers. Data were collected through questionnaires answered by seventh grade pupils. The author states that the study was able to identify some potential linkages between Sport Education in physical education settings and provision and participation into other areas of the school curriculum.

The article describes a case wherein the cluster approach is being applied to physical education mentor training. In this approach, schools are organized into one or four clusters and meet twice a year. The December cluster meeting centers on the operational aspects of mentoring while the May meeting highlights a joint observation of a student teacher on placement within the host school. It cites the contributions of mentors involved in the clusters in schools such as co-delivery of some university-based content.
