- Abstract
African American women in higher education have faced challenges as they have sought to advance to a senior-level position. The literature demonstrates that African American woman has been confronted with racial bias. African American women have been described as too emotional to hold positions of authority or senior-level positions. Some descriptors documented in the literature that are used to relate to African American women are angry, uneducated, and too emotional to lead effectively. This qualitative phenomenological research study delves into the experiences of African American women who are seeking or have obtained a senior-level position in higher education. The following research questions offer a glimpse into the lived experiences of some African American women: Research Question 1: How can higher education institutions support African American women in pursuit of senior-level positions in higher education? Research Question 2: What are some perceived barriers, which may or may not involve educational pursuits, that restrict African women from becoming an administrator? Research Question 3: What are the experiences of African American women during the pursuit of a senior-level position in higher education? The findings revealed that African American women from different higher education institutions in different educational roles have experienced dissimilar challenges in attaining that desired position. There are covert biases held by some leaders in higher education that are barriers to African American women in their career advancement within higher education. Implications and recommendations are discussed. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC. Further reproduction is prohibited without permission.
