Patients with IC often experience urination problems, such as urinary frequency and urgency, along with pain or discomfort in the bladder area. Therefore, new treatments based on IC etiology are needed. Polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) is a biologic agonist of the adenosine A2A receptor, and PDRN has anti-inflammatory effect and inhibits apoptosis. In the current study, the effect of PDRN on cyclophosphamide-induced IC animal model was investigated using rats.Methodology: To induce the IC animal model, 75 mg/kg of cyclophosphamide was injected intraperitoneally once every 3 days for 10 days. The rats in the PDRN-treated groups were intraperitoneally injected with 0.5 mL physiological saline containing 8 mg/kg PDRN, once a day for 10 days after IC induction.Results: Induction of IC by cyclophosphamide injection caused voiding dysfunction, bladder edema, and histological damage. Cyclophosphamide injection increased secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines and enhanced apoptosis. In contrast, PDRN treatment alleviated voiding dysfunction, bladder edema, and histological damage. Secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines and expressions of apoptotic factors were suppressed by PDRN treatment. These changes indicate that treatment with PDRN improves voiding function by ultimately promoting the repair of damaged bladder tissue.Conclusion: The conclusion of this experiment suggests the possibility that PDRN could be used as an effective therapeutic agent for IC.Keywords: interstitial cystitis, adenosine A2A receptor, polydeoxyribonucleotide, voiding function, inflammation, apoptosis

The Indacaterol effectiveness in COPD patients with Tuberculosis history (INFINITY) study assessed the efficacy and safety of once-daily inhaled indacaterol 150 µg for the treatment of Korean COPD patients with destroyed lung by TB and moderate-to-severe airflow limitation. Methods: This was a multicenter, double-blind, parallel-group study, in which eligible patients were randomized (1:1) to receive either once-daily indacaterol 150 µg or placebo for 8 weeks. The primary efficacy endpoint was change from baseline in trough forced expiratory volume in 1 s at Week 8; the secondary endpoints included changes in transition dyspnea index score and St George’s Respiratory Questionnaire for COPD score at Week 8. 3. Superhydrophobic drag reduction in turbulent flows: a critical review

Abstract: Superhydrophobic (SHPo) surfaces have been investigated vigorously since around 2000 due in large part to their unique potential for hydrodynamic frictional drag reduction without any energy or material input. The mechanisms and key factors affecting SHPo drag reduction have become relatively well understood for laminar flows by around 2010, as has been reviewed before [Lee et al. Exp Fluids 57:176 (2016)], but the progress for turbulent flows has been rather tortuous. While improved flow tests made positive SHPo drag reduction in fully turbulent flows more regular since around 2010, such a success in a natural, open water environment was reported only in 2020 [Xu et al. Phys Rev Appl 13:034056 (2020b)]. In this article, we review studies from the literature about turbulent flows over SHPo surfaces, with a focus on experimental studies. We summarize the key knowledge obtained, including the drag-reduction mechanism in the turbulent regime, the effect of the surface roughness morphology, and the fate and role of the plastron. This review is aimed to help guide the design and application of SHPo surfaces for drag reduction in the large-scale turbulent flows of field conditions. 4. Low-cost and low-topography fabrication of multilayer interconnections for microfluidic devices

Abstract: Multilayer interconnections are needed for microdevices with a large number of independent electrodes. A multi-level photolithographic process is commonly employed to provide multilayer interconnections in integrated circuit (IC) devices, but it is often too expensive for large-area or disposable devices frequently needed for microfluidics. The printed circuit board (PCB) can provide multilayer interconnection at low cost, but its rough topography poses a challenge for small droplets to slide over. Here we report a low-cost fabrication of low-topography multilayer interconnects by selective and controlled anodization of thin-film metal layers. The process utilizes anodization of metal (tantalum in this paper) or, more specifically, repetitions of a partial anodization to form insulation layers between conductive layers and a full anodization to form isolating regions between electrodes, replacing the usual process of depositing, planarizing, and etching insulation layers. After verifying the electric connections and insulations as intended, the developed method is applied to electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD), whose complex microfluidic products are currently built on PCB or thin-film transistor (TFT) substrates. To demonstrate the utility, we fabricated a 3 metal-layer EWOD device with steps (surface topography) less than 1 micrometer (vs. > 10 micrometers of PCB EWOD devices) and confirmed basic digital microfluidic operations.

5. On-demand radiosynthesis of: N -succinimidyl-4-[18F]fluorobenzoate ([18F]SFB) on an electrowetting-on-dielectric microfluidic chip for 18F-labeling of protein

Abstract: An all-electronic, droplet-based batch microfluidic device, operated using the electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD) mechanism was developed for on-demand synthesis of N-succinimidyl-4-[18F]fluorobenzoate ([18F]SFB), the most commonly used 18F-prosthetic group for biomolecule labeling. In order to facilitate the development of peptides, and proteins as new diagnostic and therapeutic agents, we have diversified the compact EWOD microfluidic platform to perform the three-step radiosynthesis of [18F]SFB starting from the no carrier added [18F]fluoride ion. In this report, we established an optimal microliter droplet reaction condition to obtain reliable yields and synthesized [18F]SFB with sufficient radioactivity for subsequent conjugation to the anti-PSCA cys-diabody (A2cDb) and for small animal imaging. The three-step, one-pot radiosynthesis of [18F]SFB radiochemistry was adapted to a batch microfluidic platform with a reaction droplet sandwiched between two parallel plates of an EWOD chip, and optimized. Specifically, the ratio of precursor to base, droplet volume, reagent concentration, reaction time, and evaporation time were found be to be critical parameters. [18F]SFB was successfully synthesized on the EWOD chip in 39 ± 7% (n = 4) radiochemical yield in a total synthesis time of ∼120 min ([18F]fluoride activation, [18F]fluorination, hydrolysis, and coupling reaction, HPLC purification, drying and reformulation). The reformulation and stabilization step for [18F]SFB was important to obtain a high protein labeling efficiency of 33.1 ± 12.5% (n = 3). A small-animal immunoPET pilot study demonstrated that the [18F]SFB-PSCA diabody conjugate showed specific uptake in the PSCA-positive human prostate cancer xenograft. The successful development of a compact footprint of the EWOD radiosynthesizer has the potential to empower biologists to produce PET probes of interest themselves in a standard laboratory.

6. Superhydrophobic drag reduction in laminar flows: a critical review

Abstract: A gas in between micro- or nanostructures on a submerged superhydrophobic (SHPo) surface allows the liquid on the structures to flow with an effective slip. If large enough, this slippage may entail a drag reduction appreciable for many flow systems. However, the large discrepancies among the slippage levels reported in the literature have led to a widespread misunderstanding on the drag-reducing ability of SHPo surfaces. Today we know that the amount of slip, generally quantified with a slip length, is mainly determined by the structural features of SHPo surfaces, such as the pitch, solid fraction, and pattern type, and further affected by secondary factors, such as the state of the liquid–gas interface. Reviewing the experimental data of laminar flows in the literature comprehensively and comparing them with the theoretical predictions, we provide a global picture of the liquid slip on structured surfaces to assist in rational design of SHPo surfaces for drag reduction. Because the trapped gas, called plastron, vanishes along with its slippage effect in most application conditions, lastly we discuss the recent efforts to prevent its loss. This review is limited to laminar flows, for which the SHPo drag reduction is reasonably well understood.

Abstract: Thermal conductance switches enable active and reconfigurable thermal control and management for a wide variety of applications. We demonstrate a thermal conductance switch based on the actuation of liquid droplets in a co-planar electro-wetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) configuration. By eliminating the need for relative motions of two heat transfer surfaces, the device provides a significant advantage in the mechanical design of adaptive thermal control systems. Proof-of-concept devices are constructed and characterized to confirm the mechanism of droplet detachment and attachment for thermal switching. Numerical simulation is performed to elucidate the experimentally measured thermal performance and identify thermocapillary flows as an important contributor to heat transfer for certain dielectric liquids. The present work provides a proof-of-concept demonstration of novel thermal conductance switches and offers physical insights to help systematically design the switches for practical applications.

8. Miniature fuel-cell system complete with on-demand fuel and oxidant supply

Abstract: The size of a functioning "system" rather than the individual components determines the success of many miniaturization efforts. While most of the existing micro fuel-cell research has been focusing on the fuel-cell stack, our approach has been to systematically eliminate all the ancillary components with the goal of miniaturizing the full system. In this paper, we present a miniature fuel-cell system that combines the self-pumping of fuel and self-generation of oxidant altogether in a box-shape device of a few centimeters. Since the fuel is pumped on demand inside the system without requiring any external assistance, the device is self-sufficient and portable. Furthermore, the oxygen is generated on demand inside the system without requiring the ambient air, so that the device can be stacked in multiple. Constructed simply as liquids in a solid container, this active fuel-cell system resembles a battery to the user.

9. Infinite lifetime of underwater superhydrophobic states

Abstract: Submerged superhydrophobic (SHPo) surfaces are well known to transition from the dewetted to wetted state over time. Here, a theoretical model is applied to describe the depletion of trapped air in a simple trench and rearranged to prescribe the conditions for infinite lifetime. By fabricating a microscale trench in a transparent hydrophobic material, we directly observe the air depletion process and verify the model. The study leads to the demonstration of infinite lifetime (>50 days) of air pockets on engineered microstructured surfaces under water for the first time. Environmental fluctuations are identified as the main factor behind the lack of a long-term underwater SHPo state to date.

10. Superhydrophobic turbulent drag reduction as a function of surface grating parameters

Abstract: Despite the confirmation of slip flows and successful drag reduction (DR) in small-scaled laminar flows, the full impact of superhydrophobic (SHPo) DR remained questionable because of the sporadic and inconsistent experimental results in turbulent flows. Here we report a systematic set of bias-free reduction data obtained by measuring the skin-friction drags on a SHPo surface and a smooth surface at the same time and location in a turbulent boundary layer (TBL) flow. Each monolithic sample consists of a SHPo surface and a smooth surface suspended by flexure springs, all carved out from a 2.7 × 2.7 mm2 silicon chip by photolithographic microfabrication. The flow tests allow continuous monitoring of the plastron on the SHPo surfaces, so that the DR data are genuine and consistent. A family of SHPo samples with precise profiles reveals the effects of grating parameters on turbulent DR, which was measured to be as much as ∼75.

Abstract: We present an electrostatically actuated rotary stage featuring liquid rings, which serve as both mechanical bearings and electric connections between the rotor and the substrate. The liquid rings are formed by confining a liquid inside hydrophilic grooves and repelling it from the superhydrophobic surfaces outside the grooves. Made of a fluid, the liquid-ring bearing avoids the dry friction of the solid bearings, significantly improving the reliability. Formed as rings, it avoids the resistance of contactangle hysteresis sliding over droplets, and hence dramatically reducing the static friction. Furthermore, surface tension facilitates the self-alignment of the rotor to the substrate and stator during the assembly and provides the stability against drift and shock during operation. Electrically, each liquid ring passes an independent electric signal, allowing a direct electrical path between the substrate and potential components on the rotor. A three-phase electrostatic rotary stage has been design, fabricated, and tested. The minimum torque to initiate the rotation is ∼2.5nṄm - hundreds of times smaller than droplet-based counterparts. The device has operated successfully by applying sequential voltages of 50V DC between the rotor and the stators. The electric transmission has been verified by powering an LED on a rotating rotor. This is the first report of an electrostatically actuated rotating microdevice with a liquid bearing and a direct power transmission. © 2013 IEEE.

Abstract: As the technology advances, a growing number of biomedical microelectromechanical systems (bio-MEMS) research involves development of lab-on-a-chip devices and micrototal analysis systems. For example, a portable instrument capable of biomedical analyses (e.g., blood sample analysis) and immediate recording, whether the patients are in the hospital or home, would be a considerable benefit to human health with an excellent commercial viability. Digital microfluidic (DMF) system based on the electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) mechanism is an especially promising candidate for such point-of-care systems. The EWOD-based DMF system processes droplets in a thin space or on an open surface, unlike the usual microfluidic systems that process liquids by pumping them in microchannels. Droplets can be generated and manipulated on EWOD chip only with electric signals without the use of pumps or valves, simplifying the chip fabrication and the system construction. Microfluidic operations by EWOD actuation feature precise droplet actuation, less contamination risk, reduced reagents volume, better reagents mixing efficiency, shorter reaction time, and flexibility for integration with other elements. In addition, the simplicity and portability make the EWOD-based DMF system widely popular in biomedical or chemical fields as a powerful sample preparation platform. Many chemical and biomedical researches, such as DNA assays, proteomics, cell assays, and immunoassays, have been reported using the technology. In this paper, we have reviewed the recent developments and studies of EWOD-based DMF systems for biomedical applications published mostly during the last 5 years. © 2014 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

14. Microchannel cooling device with perforated side walls: Design and modeling

Abstract: We propose and analyze a novel two-phase microchannel cooling device that incorporates perforated side walls for potential use as an embedded thermal management solution for high heat flux semiconductor devices. A dense array of perforated side walls separate alternating liquid and vapor microchannels, allowing the vapor generated through evaporation of liquid supplied through micro-perforations to flow only in the dedicated vapor channels. By separating the liquid and vapor flows, these "perspiring" side walls enable us to circumvent flow instabilities and other challenges associated with conventional two-phase microchannel cooling while at the same time effectively take advantage of the large extended surface areas available in high-aspect-ratio microchannels. One implementation of our design is parametrically analyzed using finite element modeling, demonstrating the potential of our proposed device for handling high heat flux electronic and optoelectronic semiconductor devices. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. 16. Evaluation of repeated electrowetting on three different fluoropolymer top coatings

Abstract: Degradation of the electrowetting effect by a repeated actuation is evaluated over an extended period (200 min) on electrowetting-on-dielectric samples for three popular fluoropolymer top coatings: Teflon, FluoroPel and Cytop. A conductive liquid droplet is tested in an air environment at electrowetting number Ew ≅ 0.34. A pulse train (6 s period and 50% duty cycle) of three different voltage types is used for the actuation: positive dc, negative dc and 1 kHz ac. For the dc actuations, electrowetting degrades gradually on Cytop but significantly faster on Teflon and FluoroPel under the tested conditions. 17. Miniature netting system for endoscopic object retrieval from hard-to-reach area

Abstract: Retrieval of an object from hard-to-reach areas requires the use of instruments of various kinds sent through an endoscope. However, removing a flat object firmly lodged in a narrow space, such as a coin or a button battery in a digestive passageway, causes complications when using existing endoscopic instruments. To address such a difficult situation, this paper reports development of a miniature retrieval device using MEMS technology and implementation of the device in a custom-made endoscope. The MEMS device consists of a circular plastic net 15 mm in diameter and pneumatically operated microjoints integrated under the net to bend it. The endoscope is equipped with a hooking mechanism, which secures the net after it wraps the object, and double imaging systems through which the operator monitors overall endoscopic retrieval procedures. Object retrieval is tested in a lab environment using a coin in a tube. © 1992-2012 IEEE.

Abstract: Evaluating the anodized tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) that has been recently reported as a dielectric for low-voltage electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) devices, we find a severe deterioration in performance if the working liquid is actuated with positive dc voltage. In an effort to reduce the limitation of this otherwise attractive dielectric material for EWOD, proposed herein is a Ta2O5 layer prepared by anodizing a sputtered Ta2O5 film. This sputtered-anodized Ta2O5 allows the use of positive dc signals, while maintaining the low-voltage actuation for which the anodized Ta 2O5 was originally introduced. Abstract: We introduce a simple and compact fuel-cell architecture consisting of only solid channels and demonstrate its validity by developing a miniature direct formic acid fuel cell (DFAFC). The proposed architecture generates electric power while pumping the fuel and removing byproduct CO 2 without any discrete pump, gas separator, or membrane electrode assembly (MEA). The fuel pump and gas separator are embedded in the channel, as reported before, by directionally growing and venting CO 2 byproduct bubbles formed inside the reaction microchannels using virtual check valve and microporous hydrophobic venting membrane. The new architecture further eliminates the MEA, along with the issues associated with it, by flowing one stream of fuel and electrolyte mixture in a single channel consisting of both an anode and an air-breathing cathode. The reported system obtains a supply of oxygen directly from quiescent air through a gas-diffusion cathode rather than using an oxygen tank. By eliminating all the ancillary parts, the so-called packaging penalty, which has been hindering the miniaturization of fuel cells below the order of a centimeter, is avoided. This simple and self-standing fuel-cell unit produces 16.7 mW/cm 2, a performance comparable to the existing bulkier DFAFCs that use external pumps, pressurized oxygen or MEA. © 2012 IEEE.

20. Characterization of nontoxic liquid-metal alloy galinstan for applications in microdevices

Abstract: We have obtained interfacial properties of Galinstan, a nontoxic liquid-metal alloy, to help replace mercury in miniature devices. To prevent formation of an oxide skin that severely hinders the fluidic behavior of small Galinstan droplets and leads to inaccurate property data, we performed our experiments in a nitrogen-filled glove box. It was found that only if never exposed to oxygen levels above 1 part per million (ppm) would Galinstan droplets behave like a liquid. Two key properties were then investigated: contact angles and surface tension. Advancing and receding contact angles of Galinstan were measured from sessile droplets on various materials: for example, 146.8 ° and 121.5 °, respectively, on glass. Surface tension was measured by the pendant-drop method to be 534.6 ± 10.7 mN/m. All the measurements were done in nitrogen at 28 ° C with oxygen and moisture levels below 0.5 ppm. To help design droplet-based microfluidic devices, we tested the response of Galinstan to electrowetting-on-dielectric actuation. © 2012 IEEE.

21. Wetting and active dewetting processes of hierarchically constructed superhydrophobic surfaces fully immersed in water

Abstract: When a superhydrophobic (SHPo) surface is fully submerged underwater, the surface becomes wet eventually and cannot recover the SHPo state naturally. In this paper, we fabricate hydrophobic microposts on a hydrophobic nanostructured substrate, i.e., hierarchically structured SHPo surfaces, and investigate their wetting and dewetting processes while immersed in water. All the micropost surfaces get wet, with the conditions of the water only affecting the speed of wetting. All the nanopost surfaces get wet over time after all the microposts on them are wetted. We demonstrate various active means (saturating air in water, bridging the surface to the outside air, and gas generation on the substrate) that can dewet the already wetted microposts as far as the substrate nanoposts remained nonwet. In particular, the SHPo surfaces with the recently developed electrolytic recovery mechanism are shown to maintain an SHPo state even under previously irreconcilable conditions, such as surface defects and high liquid pressure, indefinitely. © 2012 IEEE.

Abstract: The critical role of monocyte recruitment in atherogenesis has been appreciated for some time. However, until recently, there have been no sufficiently sensitive methods for measuring rates of monocyte recruitment to the arterial wall in vivo. We have developed a novel highly sensitive method, based on the polymerase chain reaction, for quantitatively tracking DNA-marked monocytes and have adapted it for use in mice. We use the uniquely male gene, SRY:, on the Y chromosome as a gene marker. We transfuse monocytes from a male donor into a congenic female mouse, euthanize the mouse after 24 to 48 hours, and then quantify the arterial uptake of monocytes by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. This study describes the techniques used and their sensitivity and reproducibility and demonstrates the approach by assessing the effects of cytokines. In control low density lipoprotein receptor-negative mice, monocyte recruitment decreased slightly but significantly as lesions progressed. Intraperitoneal injection of a combination of tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-1 beta more than doubled the rate of monocyte recruitment into developing lesions. However, the response to the cytokines was much greater in younger mice with less advanced lesions than in older animals with more advanced lesions.

Abstract: Social media have become popular platforms to disseminate information, especially related to politicized topics such as BLM and COVID-19. To better understand how medical institutions have engaged with the social media discourse on BLM and COVID-19, we examined psychiatry residency programs’ tweets in response to George Floyd’s murder and during the first 6 months of the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S. Only 14% of the 249 evaluated psychiatry residency programs had Twitter accounts (we included programs with their own account or their affiliated psychiatry department account) indicating a substantial absence on social media. Of those programs, 78% tweeted at least once about COVID-19 (1,153 tweets) and 56% tweeted at least once about the BLM movement (117 tweets). The top three purposes of tweets were sharing media, posting about an event, and sharing a resource.

Abstract: Population aging is accelerating worldwide and has significant socio-economic implications, including a decline in the size of the labor force, an increase in the age-dependency ratio, and a redistribution of income and wealth. Hence, the redesign of pension systems has become a priority. Taxation is crucial to influence behavior and tackle these issues, e.g., tax incentives for pension savings. Yet, whereas some progress has been made, much remains to be done to increase the effectiveness and fairness of pension systems. Thus, we urge the Group of 20 governments to take a systemic view of pension systems including socio-economic aspects such as education, migration, labor force participation and labor market informality. Moreover, governments should take into account the distributional impact of tax policies for pension savings.
