3. A Wireless Smart Adhesive Integrated with a Thin-Film Stretchable Inverted-F Antenna.

Abstract

In recent years, skin-mounted devices have gained prominence in personal wellness and remote patient care. However, the rigid components of many wearables often cause discomfort due to their mechanical mismatch with the skin. To address this, we extend the use of the solderable stretchable sensing system (S4) to develop a wireless skin temperature-sensing smart adhesive. This work introduces two novel types of progress in wearables: the first demonstration of Bluetooth-integration and development of a thin-film-based stretchable inverted-F antenna (SIFA). Characterized through RF simulations, vector network analysis under deformation, and anechoic chamber tests, SIFA demonstrated potential as a low-profile, on-body Bluetooth antenna with a resonant frequency of 2.45 GHz that helps S4 retain its thin overall profile. The final S4 system achieved high correlation (R = 0.95, p < 0.001, mean standard error = 0.04 °C) with commercial sensors during daily activities. These findings suggest that S4-based smart adhesives integrated with SIFAs could offer a promising platform for comfortable, efficient, and functional skin-integrated wearables, supporting a range of health monitoring applications. Abstract

New classes of ultrathin flexible and stretchable devices have changed the way modern electronics are designed to interact with their target systems. Though more and more novel technologies surface and steer the way we think about future electronics, there exists an unmet need in regards to optimizing the fabrication procedures for these devices so that large-scale industrial translation is realistic. This article presents an unconventional approach for facile microfabrication and processing of adhesive-peeled (AP) flexible sensors. By assembling AP sensors on a weakly-adhering substrate in an inverted fashion, we demonstrate a procedure with 50% reduced end-to-end processing time that achieves greater levels of fabrication yield. The methodology is used to demonstrate the fabrication of electrical and mechanical flexible and stretchable AP sensors that are peeled-off their carrier substrates by consumer adhesives. In using this approach, we outline the manner by which adhesion is maintained and buckling is reduced for gold film processing on polydimethylsiloxane substrates. In addition, we demonstrate the compatibility of our methodology with large-scale post-processing using a roll-to-roll approach.

Abstract

The ability to measure subtle changes in arterial pressure using devices mounted on the skin can be valuable for monitoring vital signs in emergency care, detecting the early onset of cardiovascular disease and continuously assessing health status. Conventional technologies are well suited for use in traditional clinical settings, but cannot be easily adapted for sustained use during daily activities. Here we introduce a conformal device that avoids these limitations. Ultrathin inorganic piezoelectric and semiconductor materials on elastomer substrates enable amplified, low hysteresis measurements of pressure on the skin, with high levels of sensitivity (~0.005 Pa) and fast response times (~0.1 ms). Experimental and theoretical studies reveal enhanced piezoelectric responses in lead zirconate titanate that follow from integration on soft supports as well as engineering behaviours of the associated devices. Calibrated measurements of pressure variations of blood flow in near-surface arteries demonstrate capabilities for measuring radial artery augmentation index and pulse pressure velocity.

Abstract

Wireless, flexible, ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) are of great interest in the development of wearable health monitors and clinical systems. Existing film-based electrochemical sensors, however, still have practical limitations due to poor electrical contact and material–interfacial leakage. Here, we introduce a wireless, flexible film-based system with a highly selective, stable, and reliable sodium sensor. A flexible and hydrophobic composite with carbon black and soft elastomer serves as an ion-to-electron transducer offering cost efficiency, design simplicity, and long-term stability. The sensor package demonstrates repeatable analysis of selective sodium detection in saliva with good sensitivity (56.1 mV/decade), stability (0.53 mV/h), and selectivity coefficient of sodium against potassium (-3.0). The film ISEs have an additional membrane coating that provides reinforced stability for the sensor upon mechanical bending. Collectively, the comprehensive study of materials, surface chemistry, and sensor design in this work shows the potential of the wireless flexible sensor system for low-profile wearable applications.

20. Bridging the Gap Between Technological Advancement and Manufacturability: Development of Solderable Stretchable Sensing Systems

Abstract

In the past decade, development of stretchable, thin-lm electronics havegarnered attention from healthcare industries to general public, since such platformwould enable a direct integration with skin, providing the means of intimateand unobtrusive health monitoring. However, such transition of the technology toconsumers has been hampered by challenges associated with high-cost, inabilityto scale, and low device reliability. To address this, we see an increase in researcheort in adopting the use of rigid, yet small, commercial-off-the-shelf chip components.The value gained by employing the full sophistication of modern integratedcircuits (ICs) is disproportionate to the slight loss in overall stretchability.This dissertation aims to provide a unique methodology that weds the benets of both thin-lm and surface mount technologies. However, the focus isnot only on developing the new sophisticated systems but also on scalability ofthe manufacturing process. First, we introduce a method to produce a stretchable,thin-lm interconnection platform exhibiting an excellent solderability withindustry-standard SAC (Sn96.5/Ag3.0/Cu0.5) solder alloy. This platform, whichwe call Solderable and Stretchable Sensing System (S4), was further veried forits feasibility to be scalably manufactured through the demonstrative productionof S4 respiration sensing devices. Finally, we demonstrated the direct integrationof fully assembled S4 devices with a large area adhesive lm, proving the methodscompatibility with a roll-to-roll process.Next we explored S4s capacity as a platform for wireless communication devicesinvolving high frequency radio signals, such as those involved with Bluetoothprotocols. We introduced the engineering challenges found in designing thin-lmconductive traces for reliably accommodating radio frequency RX/TX. As a solutionto these challenges, S4s utilized novel stretchable antennas boasting similarthin-lm conductive properties, obviating chip antennas and further demonstratingtheir versatility as an electronic platform. Finally, we employed S4 devices capableof physiological monitoring, signal amplication, analog-to-digital conversion, andwireless communication via Bluetooth Low Energy protocols using the integratedstretchable antennas.We demonstrated S4s capacity for adopting various surface mount chippackages, scalable manufacturing and packaging, support for high frequency digitalsignals, and transmitting/receiving wireless radio signals. We believe the compatibilityof the manufacturing methods with existing tools and materials, as wellas S4s versatile and modular characteristics successfully tie together the values ofstretchable electronics and advanced IC technologies.

Abstract

Motor imagery offers an excellent opportunity as a stimulus-free paradigm for brain-machine interfaces. Conventional electroencephalography (EEG) for motor imagery requires a hair cap with multiple wired electrodes and messy gels, causing motion artifacts. Here, we introduce a wireless scalp electronic system with virtual reality for real-time, continuous classification of motor imagery brain signals. This low-profile, portable system integrates imperceptible microneedle electrodes and soft wireless circuits. Virtual reality addresses subject variance in detectable EEG response to motor imagery by providing clear, consistent visuals and instant biofeedback. The wearable soft system offers advantageous contact surface area and reduced electrode impedance density, resulting in significantly enhanced EEG signals and classification accuracy. The combination with convolutional neural network-machine learning provides a real-time, continuous motor imagery-based brain-machine interface. With four human subjects, the scalp electronic system offers a high classification accuracy (93.22±1.33% for four classes), allowing wireless, real-time control of a virtual reality game.
