Understanding the ion dynamics within the electric double layer (EDL) is crucial for maximizing the potential of chemo‐mechanical energy harvesters. This study elucidates the electrochemical response of EDL to the compressive mechanical stimulation of carbon nanotube (CNT) yarns from the perspective of ion adsorption. The results revealed that H3O+ contributed to the ionic capacitance of the EDL by forming a polarized layer with Cl− on the outer Helmholtz plane. The unique molecular shape, compatible with spx hybridized orbitals of CNTs also enhance surface adsorption properties. In contrast, Cl− provides a strong electrostatic potential to the electrode, which has electronic structures incompatible with the spx hybridized orbitals of CNTs. The differing dynamic behaviors of these two ions jointly induce delamination of the cationic and anionic layers, as well as unipolarization of the EDL under mechanical compression of the microstructure. The ion dynamics revealed by multiscale simulations satisfactorily explain the experimentally observed high ion capacitance and energy conversion process of the HCl‐based EDL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Technology to selectively secure Li+ from various heavy metal complexes using a metal–organic framework (MOF)-based separator is important. This study theoretically investigated, for the first time, the method of maximizing selectivity between Li+ and Mg2+ ions with similar physical and chemical properties through UiO-66-(NH2)2. All-atom molecular dynamics simulations were used to analyze the structural and mechanical properties of hydrated ion clusters penetrating UiO-66-(NH2)2 under various electric fields. The results revealed that the robustness of the hydrates composed of ions is a key design factor for selective filtration properties. Li+ exhibits high permeability owing to repeated cleavage and recombination of water ligands in the process of penetrating the MOF. This hopping behavior is accelerated by the presence of amine groups and the application of an electric field. However, the hydrate formed by Mg2+ does not collapse its structure within the MOF because of the strong water ligand binding force. The differences between the physicochemical behavior of Li+ and Mg2+ ions discovered in this study can be directly used in MOF design and process management to maximize selective extraction of Li+. Owing to the structural characteristics of 2D layered nanomaterials, anisotropic thermal conductivity is considered an attractive design factor for constructing efficient heat‐transfer pathways. In this study, the electromechanical origin of anisotropic thermal conduction in Ti3C2O2M (M = Li, Na, K) is investigated at the atomic scale using theoretical multiscale analysis. The results demonstrate that the acoustic and optical phonon modes drive interlayer and intralayer heat conduction, respectively. Further, the lower the atomic number of the alkali ions intercalated in the Ti3C2O2 layer, the more immediately it responds to externally applied oscillations owing to its low inertia and high electrostatic force. The Li‐ion layer exhibits an instantaneous response to vibrational excitations from an external source, making it transparent to higher phonon modes under interlayer and intralayer thermal conduction. The electromechanical modulation properties of the ion layer are further elucidated, providing practical insights into the design of anisotropic thermal paths. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The potential of organic electrodes in lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) is highlighted by their cost‐effectiveness and natural abundance. However, the dissolution of the active material in the electrolyte is a major obstacle to their use in LIBs. Although high‐concentration electrolytes (HCEs) have been proposed to address this issue, they face challenges such as high viscosity, poor wettability, and suboptimal ion conductivity. Hence, this study introduces diluted electrolytes as non‐solvating electrolytes to offset the physical limitations of HCEs and suppress the dissolution of organic electrodes. When a diluted electrolyte is used, perylene‐3,4,9,10‐tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA)—a notable organic electrode material—demonstrates superior capacity retention and rate performance, achieving 91% of capacity retained at 1000 mA g−1 over 1000 cycles. Through electrochemical and spectroscopic measurements and molecular dynamics simulations, the diluted electrolyte successfully inhibits and demonstrates the dissolution of the active material, preventing capacity loss and the detrimental shuttle effect. SUMMARY: Chloroplasts are essential organelles in plants that contain chlorophylls and facilitate photosynthesis for growth and development. As photosynthetic efficiency significantly impacts crop productivity, understanding the regulatory mechanisms of chloroplast development has been crucial in increasing grain and biomass production. This study demonstrates the involvement of OsGATA16, an ortholog of Arabidopsis GATA, NITRATE INDUCIBLE, CARBON‐METABOLISM INVOLVED (GNC), and GNC‐LIKE/CYTOKININ‐RESPONSIVE GATA FACTOR 1 (GNL/CGA1), in chlorophyll biosynthesis and chloroplast development in rice (Oryza sativa). The osgata16‐1 knockdown mutants produced pale‐green leaves, while OsGATA16‐overexpressed plants (OsGATA16‐OE1) generated dark‐green leaves, compared to their parental japonica rice. Reverse transcription and quantitative PCR analysis revealed downregulation of genes related to chloroplast division, chlorophyll biosynthesis, and photosynthesis in the leaves of osgata16‐1 and upregulation in those of OsGATA16‐OE1. Additionally, in vivo binding assays showed that OsGATA16 directly binds to the promoter regions of OsHEMA, OsCHLH, OsPORA, OsPORB, and OsFtsZ, and upregulates their expression. These findings indicate that OsGATA16 serves as a positive regulator controlling chlorophyll biosynthesis and chloroplast development in rice. Significance Statement: The GATA transcription factor family has been shown to influence various regulatory processes that involve alterations in gene expression in plants. Our research demonstrates that OsGATA16, a transcription factor found in rice, is capable of directly and indirectly upregulating genes involved in chlorophyll biosynthesis and chloroplast development in newly emerging leaves.
