8. Diameters of Graphs on Reduced Words of 12 and 21-Inflations

Abstract

It is a classical result that any permutation in the symmetric group can be generated by a sequence of adjacent transpositions. The sequences of minimal length are called reduced words, and in this paper we study the graphs of these reduced words, with edges determined by relations in the underlying Coxeter group. Recently, the diameter has been calculated for the longest permutation $n\ldots 21$ by Reiner and Roichman as well as Assaf. In this paper we find inductive formulas for the diameter of the graphs of 12-inflations and many 21-inflations. These results extend to the associated graphs on commutation and long braid classes. Also, these results give a recursive formula for the diameter of the longest permutation, which matches that of Reiner, Roichman and Assaf. Lastly, We make progress on conjectured bounds of the diameter by Reiner and Roichman, which are based on the underlying hyperplane arrangement, and find families of permutations that achieve the upper bound and lower bound of the conjecture. In particular permutations that avoid 312 or 231 have graphs that achieve the upper bound.

9. Identifiability of Gaussian Structural Equation Models with Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Error Variances

Abstract

In this work, we consider the identifiability assumption of Gaussian linear structural equation models (SEMs) in which each variable is determined by a linear function of its parents plus normally distributed error. It has been shown that linear Gaussian structural equation models are fully identifiable if all error variances are the same or known. Hence, this work proves the identifiability of Gaussian SEMs with both homogeneous and heterogeneous unknown error variances. Our new identifiability assumption exploits not only error variances, but edge weights; hence, it is strictly milder than prior work on the identifiability result. We further provide a structure learning algorithm that is statistically consistent and computationally feasible, based on our new assumption. The proposed algorithm assumes that all relevant variables are observed, while it does not assume causal minimality and faithfulness. We verify our theoretical findings through simulations and real multivariate data, and compare our algorithm to state-of-the-art PC, GES and GDS algorithms., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

14. BTS Gripper: Compliant Linkage-Based Gripper Design for a Busing-Table Service Application

Abstract

In this article, we present an adaptive busing-table service (BTS) gripper. The BTS gripper is a mode-changeable three-fingered parallel gripper with compliant linkage-based finger mechanisms and has two modes: adaptive grasp and nongrasp modes (push/pull operation). For the BTS task, the gripper must be able to grasp dishes of various sizes, shapes, and weights. In addition, the gripper must have the capability to push and pull dishes so that there is sufficient space for holding the dishes. A compliant linkage-based finger mechanism using mechanical compliance and a stopper was developed to implement adaptive grasping. A mode-changing mechanism and rigid posture of the finger with a mechanical stopper were designed to achieve the nongrasp mode. A gripper prototype was designed, and the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed gripper were verified through several experiments on various dishes and objects on a 1-DOF jig testbed and 6-DOF manipulator. Thus, this study contributes to the advancement of robotic manipulation technology by offering a novel gripper design for complex BTS scenarios.

21. An Educational Tool for Browsing the Semantic Web

Abstract

The Semantic Web is an extension of the current Web where information is represented in a machine processable way. It is not separate from the current Web and one of the confusions that novice users might have is where the Semantic Web is. In fact, users can easily encounter RDF documents that are components of the Semantic Web while they navigate among Web pages. In addition, the number of RDF documents on the Web is ever-increasing and a lot of educational materials in RDF format become available on the Web. In this paper, we propose a simple Semantic Web browser by which non-expert users such as secondary school students who do not know technical details about the Semantic Web can browse through HTML documents and RDF documents.

Abstract

To better understand environmental electromagnetic wave exposure during the use of digital textbooks by elementary school students, we measured numeric values of the electromagnetic fields produced by tablet personal computers (TPCs). Specifically, we examined the distribution of the electromagnetic waves for various students' seating positions in an elementary school that uses digital textbooks. Electric and magnetic fields from TPCs were measured using the HI-3603 Visual Display Terminal/ Very Low Frequency (VDT/VLF) radiation measurement system. Electromagnetic field values from TPCs measured at a student's seat and at a teacher's computer were deemed not harmful to health. However, electromagnetic field values varied based on the distance between students, other electronic devices such as a desktop computers, and student posture while using a TPC. Based on these results, it is necessary to guide students to observe proper posture and to arrange seats at an appropriate distance in the classroom.

Abstract

Today, startups are achieving innovation differently from traditional companies based on quick application of new technologies, promptness in decision-making, and active risk-taking. In this background, the startup innovation ecosystem (SIE) is defined as a system of innovation actors and influencing factors and their relationship, affecting innovation-based startup activities and their performance. SIE is distinct from the traditional national innovation system (NIS) and has an impact on NIS and government policy, co-evolving in the time. This study investigated how the Korean government, which is experiencing the R&D paradox of high R&D investment but low productivity, seeks to change the NIS by developing the SIE. According to our analytical framework of the SIE, Korea's SIE is analysed in terms of startups, technology/knowledge, training/human capital, finance, infrastructure, and globalisation. In particular, the evolutionary process of startups-related policies is explained with several specific examples of policy programmes. It is found that Korea's SIE has achieved unique development, with the government's active supporting policy for startups, and has produced a big positive impact on Korea's NIS. 28. Formative Research on the Simplifying Conditions Method (SCM) for Task Analysis and Sequencing.

Abstract

The Simplifying Conditions Method (SCM) is a set of guidelines for task analysis and sequencing of instructional content under the Elaboration Theory (ET). This article introduces the fundamentals of SCM and presents the findings from a formative research study on SCM. It was conducted in two distinct phases: design and instruction. In the first phase, the SCM process was used to design a course in order to determine the weaknesses of the SCM process. In the second phase, the course was taught using the SCM sequence in order to determine the weaknesses of SCM principles. Results suggest that the current SCM process is workable; however, three recommendations were offered: (1) the need to stress the holistic rather than the step-by-step approach; (2) the need to add more detailed prescriptions; and (3) the need for formative evaluation. Second, the study yielded no critical weaknesses that might lead to possible improvements in the SCM principles, since most of the learners were very satisfied with the sequence of the instruction. 35. WAVE: Last Mile Delivery Robotic Platform With Stair-Climbing Ability Via Four-Bar Linkage-Based Locomotion

Abstract

This article presents WAVE, a four-bar linkage-based stair-climbing robot. WAVE is designed to be a last mile delivery robot that can deliver goods on stairways and flat ground. When the cranks comprising WAVE undergo rotation, the body and legs rotate parallel to each other. The rotating body and legs climb the stairs alternately. WAVE has a right-angled groove tailored to the shape of the stairs at the bottom so that it can step stably on the stairs. To prevent the robot from tilting quickly when exiting the stairs, the groove was designed to divide the angle of the robot into three. In-wheel motors are attached to the bottom of the WAVE so that it moves using the wheels on flat ground. Also, as a result of the dynamic analysis, we obtained the motor torque and friction coefficient required to climb stairs. The length of the crank, which is a design variable, was determined via mechanical analysis. The first experiment was performed on the test bench to ensure that the WAVE worked as intended. In addition, through field tests, it was confirmed that WAVE can move upstairs and downstairs on stairs of various sizes.
