The choice of boundary condition makes an essential difference in the solution structure of diffusion equations. The Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions and their combination have been the most used, but their legitimacy has been disputed. We show that the diffusion laws may select boundary conditions by themselves, and through this, we clarify the meaning of boundary conditions. To do that we extend the domain with a boundary into the whole space by giving a small diffusivity $\eps>0$ outside the domain. Then, we show that the boundary condition turns out to be Neumann or Dirichlet as $\eps\to0$ depending on the choice of a heterogeneous diffusion law. We study the appearance of a boundary condition along an interface between two regions, one with constant diffusivity $1$ and the other with diffusivity $\eps>0$, when $\eps\to0$. In particular, we take Fick's diffusion law in a context of reaction-diffusion equation with bistable nonlinearity and show that the limit of the reaction-diffusion equation satisfies the homogeneous Neumann boundary condition along the interface. We introduce a discrete-time random walk model on a one-dimensional lattice with a nonconstant sojourn time and prove that the discrete density converges to a solution of a continuum diffusion equation. Our random walk model is not Markovian due to the heterogeneity in the sojourn time, in contrast to a random walk model with a nonconstant walk length. We derive a Markovian process by choosing appropriate subindexes of the time-space grid points, and then show the convergence of its discrete density through the parabolic-scale limit. We also find the Green's function of the continuum diffusion equation and present three Monte Carlo simulations to validate the random walk model and the diffusion equation.

Traveling wave solutions of reaction-diffusion equations are well-studied for Lipschitz continuous monostable and bistable reaction functions. These special solutions play a key role in mathematical biology and in particular in the study of ecological invasions. However, if there are more than two stable steady states, the invasion phenomenon may become more intricate and involve intermediate steps, which leads one to consider not a single but a collection of traveling waves with ordered speeds. In this paper we show that, if the reaction function is discontinuous at the stable steady states, then such a collection of traveling waves exists and even provides a special solution which we call a terrace solution. More precisely, we will address both the existence and uniqueness of the terrace solution.

We develop general heterogeneous nonlocal diffusion models and investigate their connection to local diffusion models by taking a singular limit of focusing kernels. We reveal the link between the two groups of diffusion equations which include both spatial heterogeneity and anisotropy. In particular, we introduce the notion of deciding factors which single out a nonlocal diffusion model and typically consist of the total jump rate and the average jump length. In this framework, we also discuss the dependence of the profile of the steady state solutions on these deciding factors, thus shedding light on the preferential position of individuals.

We rigorously prove the passage from a Lotka-Volterra reaction-diffusion system towards a cross-diffusion system at the fast reaction limit. The system models a competition of two species, where one species has a more diverse diet than the other. The resulting limit gives a cross-diffusion system of a starvation driven type. We investigate the linear stability of homogeneous equilibria of those systems and rule out the possibility of Turing instability. Models for chemotaxis are based on gradient sensing of individual organisms. The key contribution of Keller and Segel is showing that erratic movements of individuals may result in an accurate chemotaxis phenomenon as a group. In this paper we provide another option to understand chemotactic behavior when individuals do not sense the gradient of chemical concentration by any means. We show that, if individuals increase their motility to find food when they are hungry, an accurate chemotactic behavior may obtained without sensing the gradient. Such a random dispersal has been suggested by Cho and Kim and is called starvation driven diffusion. This model is surprisingly similar to the original derivation of Keller-Segel model. Thermal diffusion has been studied for over 150 years. Despite of the long history and the increasing importance of the phenomenon, the physics of thermal diffusion remains poorly understood. In this paper Ludwig's thermal diffusion is explained using Einstein's random walk. The only new structure added is the spatial heterogeneity of the random walk to reflect the temperature gradient of thermal diffusion. Hence, the walk length and the walk speed are location dependent functions in this paper. Then, a mathematical understanding of such a random walk gives the foundation of the thermal diffusion as clearly as the original homogeneous case of Einstein., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures

The Oleinik inequality for conservation laws and Aronson-Benilan type inequalities for porous medium or p-Laplacian equations are one-sided inequalities that provide the fundamental features of the solution such as the uniqueness and sharp regularity. In this paper such one-sided inequalities are unified and generalized for a wide class of first and second order equations in the form of $$ u_t=\sigma(t,u,u_x,u_{xx}),\quad u(x,0)=u^0(x)\ge0,\quad t>0,\,x\in\bfR, $$ where the non-strict parabolicity ${\partial\over\partial q} \sigma(t,z,p,q)\ge0$ is assumed. The generalization or unification of one-sided inequalities is given in a geometric statement that the zero level set $$ A(t;m,x_0):=\{x:\rhom(x-x_0,t)-u(x,t)>0\} $$ is connected for all $t,m>0$ and $x_0\in\bfR$, where $\rhom$ is the fundamental solution with mass $m>0$. This geometric statement is shown to be equivalent to the previously mentioned one-sided inequalities and used to obtain uniqueness and TV boundedness of conservation laws without convexity assumption.
