Search

The absorption by neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium (IGM) produces the Ly$\alpha$ forest in the spectra of quasars. The Ly$\alpha$ forest absorbers have a broad distribution of neutral hydrogen column density $N_{\rm HI}$ and Doppler $b$ parameter. The narrowest Ly$\alpha$ absorption lines (of lowest $b$) with neutral hydrogen column density above $\sim 10^{13}{\rm cm^{-2}}$ are dominated by thermal broadening, which can be used to constrain the thermal state of the IGM. Here we constrain the temperature-density relation $T=T_0(\rho/\bar{\rho})^{\gamma-1}$ of the IGM at $1.6

We characterize the properties of the intergalactic medium (IGM) around a sample of galaxies extracted from state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulations of structure formation in a cosmological volume of 25 Mpc comoving at $z\sim 2$. The simulations are based on two different subresolution schemes for star formation and supernova feedback: the MUlti-Phase Particle Integrator (MUPPI) scheme and the Effective Model. We develop a quantitative and probabilistic analysis based on the apparent optical depth method of the properties of the absorbers as a function of impact parameter from their nearby galaxies: in such a way we probe different environments from circumgalactic medium to low-density filaments. Absorbers' properties are then compared with a spectroscopic observational data set obtained from high-resolution quasar spectra. Our main focus is on the N$_{\rm{ CIV}}$-N$_{\rm { HI}}$ relation around simulated galaxies: the results obtained with MUPPI and the Effective model are remarkably similar, with small differences only confined to regions at impact parameters $b = [1-3] \times r_{\rm {vir}}$. Using $\mbox{C IV}$ as a tracer of the metallicity, we obtain evidence that the observed metal absorption systems have the highest probability to be confined in a region of 150-400 kpc around galaxies. Near-filament environments have instead metallicities too low to be probed by present-day telescopes, but could be probed by future spectroscopical studies. At low densities the standard ionisation history of the intergalactic medium (IGM) predicts a decreasing temperature of the IGM with decreasing density once hydrogen (and helium) reionisation is complete. We compare the low redshift (z ~ 0.1) Lyman-alpha forest from hydrodynamical simulations with data from the Cosmic Origin Spectrograph (COS). We find tension between the observed number of lines with b-parameters in the range 25-45 km/s and the predictions from simulations that incorporate either vigorous feedback from active galactic nuclei or that exclude feedback altogether. The gas in these simulations is, respectively, either too hot to contribute to the Lyman-alpha absorption or too cold to produce the required line widths. Matching the observed b-parameter distribution therefore requires feedback processes that thermally or turbulently broaden the absorption features without collisionally (over-)ionising hydrogen. This suggests the Lyman-alpha forest b-parameter distribution is a valulable diagnostic of galactic feedback in the low redshift Universe. We furthermore confirm the low redshift Lyman-alpha forest column density distribution is better reproduced by an ultraviolet background with an HI photo-ionisation rate a factor 1.5-3 higher than predicted by Haardt & Madau (2012)., Comment: 5 pages - 1 table - 2 figures

In this work, we investigate the abundance and distribution of metals in the intergalactic medium (IGM) at $\langle z \rangle \simeq 2.8$ through the analysis of an ultra-high signal-to-noise ratio UVES spectrum of the quasar HE0940-1050. In the CIV forest, our deep spectrum is sensitive at $3\,\sigma$ to lines with column density down to $\log N_{\rm CIV} \simeq 11.4$ and in 60 per cent of the considered redshift range down to $\simeq11.1$. In our sample, all HI lines with $\log N_{\rm HI} \ge 14.8$ show an associated CIV absorption. In the range $14.0 \le \log N_{\rm HI} <14.8$, 43 per cent of HI lines has an associated CIV absorption. At $\log N_{\rm HI} < 14.0$, the detection rates drop to $<10$ per cent, possibly due to our sensitivity limits and not to an actual variation of the gas abundance properties. In the range $\log N_{\rm HI} \ge 14$, we observe a fraction of HI lines with detected CIV a factor of 2 larger than the fraction of HI lines lying in the circum-galactic medium (CGM) of relatively bright Lyman-break galaxies hosted by dark matter haloes with $\langle M\rangle \sim10^{12}$ M$_{\odot}$. The comparison of our results with the output of a grid of photoionization models and of two cosmological simulations implies that the volume filling factor of the IGM gas enriched to a metallicity $\log Z/Z_{\odot} \ge -3$ should be of the order of $\sim 10-13$ percent. In conclusion, our results favour a scenario in which metals are found also outside the CGM of bright star-forming galaxies, possibly due to pollution by lower mass objects and/or to an early enrichment by the first sources., Comment: 23 pages, 28 figures. We describe the execution and data reduction of the European Southern Observatory Large Programme "Quasars and their absorption lines: a legacy survey of the high-redshift universe with VLT/XSHOOTER" (hereafter `XQ-100'). XQ-100 has produced and made publicly available an homogeneous and high-quality sample of echelle spectra of 100 QSOs at redshifts z~3.5-4.5 observed with full spectral coverage from 315 to 2500 nm at a resolving power ranging from R~4000 to 7000, depending on wavelength. The median signal-to-noise ratios are 33, 25 and 43, as measured at rest-frame wavelengths 1700, 3000 and 3600 Angstrom, respectively. This paper provides future users of XQ-100 data with the basic statistics of the survey, along with details of target selection, data acquisition and data reduction. The paper accompanies the public release of all data products, including 100 reduced spectra. XQ-100 is the largest spectroscopic survey to date of high-redshift QSOs with simultaneous rest-frame UV/optical coverage, and as such enables a wide range of extragalactic research, from cosmology and galaxy evolution to AGN astrophysics., Comment: In press at A&A. Using the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) the COS Science Team has conducted a high signal-to-noise survey of 14 bright QSOs. In a previous paper (Savage et al. 2014) these far-UV spectra were used to discover 14 "warm" ($T > 10^5$ K) absorbers using a combination of broad Ly\alpha\ and O VI absorptions. A reanalysis of a few of this new class of absorbers using slightly relaxed fitting criteria finds as many as 20 warm absorbers could be present in this sample. A shallow, wide spectroscopic galaxy redshift survey has been conducted around these sight lines to investigate the warm absorber environment, which is found to be spiral-rich galaxy groups or cluster outskirts with radial velocity dispersions of \sigma\ = 250-750 km/s. While 2\sigma\ evidence is presented favoring the hypothesis that these absorptions are associated with the galaxy groups and not with the individual, nearest galaxies, this evidence has considerable systematic uncertainties and is based on a small sample size so it is not entirely conclusive. If the associations are with galaxy groups, the observed frequency of warm absorbers (dN/dz = 3.5-5 per unit redshift) requires them to be very large (~1 Mpc in radius at high covering factor). Most likely these warm absorbers are interface gas clouds whose presence implies the existence of a hotter ($T \sim 10^{6.5}$ K), diffuse and probably very massive ($>10^{11}~M_{\odot}$) intra-group medium which has yet to be detected directly., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We report on the observed properties of the plasma revealed through high signal-to-noise (S/N) observations of 54 intervening O VI absorption systems containing 85 O VI and 133 H I components in a blind survey of 14 QSOs observed at ~18 km s-1 resolution with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) over a redshift path of 3.52 at z < 0.5. Simple systems with one or two H I components and one O VI component comprise 50% of the systems. For a sample of 45 well-aligned absorption components where the temperature can be estimated, we find evidence for cool photoionized gas in 31 (69%) and warm gas (6 > log T > 5) in 14 (31%) of the components. The total hydrogen content of the 14 warm components can be estimated from the temperature and the measured value of log N(H I). The very large implied values of log N(H) range from 18.38 to 20.38 with a median of 19.35. The metallicity, [O/H], in the 6 warm components with log T > 5.45 ranges from -1.93 to 0.03 with a median value of -1.0 dex. Ground-based galaxy redshift studies reveal that most of the absorbers we detect sample gas in the IGM extending 200 to 600 kpc beyond the closest associated galaxy. We estimate the warm aligned O VI absorbers contain (4.1+/-1.1)% of the baryons at low z. Ultraviolet observations of the QSO 3C 263 (zem = 0.652) with COS and FUSE reveal O VI absorption systems at z = 0.06342 and 0.14072 . WIYN multi-object spectrograph observations provide information about the galaxies associated with the absorbers. The multi-phase system at z = 0.06342 traces cool photoionized gas and warm collisionally ionized gas associated with a L ~ 0.31L* compact spiral emission line galaxy with an impact parameter of 63 kpc. The cool photoionized gas in the absorber is well modeled with log U ~ -2.6, log N(H) ~17.8, log n(H) ~ -3.3 and [Si/H] = -0.14\pm0.23. The collisionally ionized gas containing C IV and O VI probably arises in cooling shock heated transition temperature gas with log T ~ 5.5. The absorber is likely tracing circumgalactic gas enriched by gas ejected from the spiral emission line galaxy. The simple system at z = 0.14072 only contains O VI and broad and narrow H I. The O VI with b = 33.4\pm11.9 km s-1 is likely associated with the broad H I {\lambda}1215 absorption with b = 86.7\pm15.4 km s-1. The difference in Doppler parameters implies the detection of a very large column of warm gas with log T = 5.61(+0.16, -0.25), log N(H) = 19.54(+0.26, -0.44) and [O/H] = -1.48 (+0.46, -0.26). This absorber is possibly associated with a 1.6L* absorption line galaxy with an impact parameter of 617 kpc although an origin in warm filament gas or in the halo of a fainter galaxy is more likely., Comment: Accepted by the Astrophysical Journal. 24 pages and 9 figures

We investigate the thermal history of the intergalactic medium (IGM) in the redshift interval z=1.7--3.2 by studying the small-scale fluctuations in the Lyman alpha forest transmitted flux. We apply a wavelet filtering technique to eighteen high resolution quasar spectra obtained with the Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES), and compare these data to synthetic spectra drawn from a suite of hydrodynamical simulations in which the IGM thermal state and cosmological parameters are varied. From the wavelet analysis we obtain estimates of the IGM thermal state that are in good agreement with other recent, independent wavelet-based measurements. We also perform a reanalysis of the same data set using the Lyman alpha forest flux probability distribution function (PDF), which has previously been used to measure the IGM temperature-density relation. This provides an important consistency test for measurements of the IGM thermal state, as it enables a direct comparison of the constraints obtained using these two different methodologies. We find the constraints obtained from wavelets and the flux PDF are formally consistent with each other, although in agreement with previous studies, the flux PDF constraints favour an isothermal or inverted IGM temperature-density relation. We also perform a joint analysis by combining our wavelet and flux PDF measurements, constraining the IGM thermal state at z=2.1 to have a temperature at mean density of T0/[10^3 K]=17.3 +/- 1.9 and a power-law temperature-density relation exponent gamma=1.1 +/- 0.1 (1 sigma). We present a measurement of the Lyman alpha flux probability distribution function (PDF) measured from a set of eight high resolution quasar spectra with emission redshifts at 3.3 < z < 3.8. We carefully study the effect of metal absorption lines on the shape of the PDF. Metals have a larger impact on the PDF measurements at lower redshift, where there are fewer Lyman alpha absorption lines. This may be explained by an increase in the number of metal lines which are blended with Lyman alpha absorption lines toward higher redshift, but may also be due to the presence of fewer metals in the intergalactic medium with increasing lookback time. We also provide a new measurement of the redshift evolution of the effective optical depth, tau_eff, at 2.8 < z < 3.6, and find no evidence for a deviation from a power law evolution in the log(tau_eff)-log(1+z) plane. The flux PDF measurements are furthermore of interest for studies of the thermal state of the intergalactic medium (IGM) at z ~ 3 . By comparing the PDF to state-of-the-art cosmological hydrodynamical simulations, we place constraints on the temperature of the IGM and compare our results with previous measurements of the PDF at lower redshift. At redshift z=3, our new PDF measurements are consistent with an isothermal temperature-density relation, T=T_0 Delta^{gamma-1}, with a temperature at the mean density of T_0 = 19250 +/- 4800 K and a slope gamma=0.90+/-0.21 (1 sigma uncertainties). In comparison, joint constraints with previous PDF measurements at z<3 favour an inverted (gamma<1) temperature-density relation with T_0=17900 +/- 3500 K and gamma=0.70 +/- 0.12, in broad agreement with previous analyses., Comment: 20 pages, 17 figures, MNRAS, accepted for publication, minor changes after referee report

We have performed an extensive Voigt profile analysis of the neutral hydrogen (HI) and metal absorption present in a sample of 18 high resolution, high signal-to-noise QSO spectra observed with VLT/UVES. We use this analysis to separate the metal contribution from the HI absorption and present an improved measurement of the flux probability distribution function (PDF) due to HI absorption alone at = 2.07, 2.52, and 2.94. The flux PDF is sensitive to the continuum fit in the normalised flux range 0.8 < F < 1.0 and to metal absorption at 0.2 < F < 0.8. Our new measurements of the flux PDF due to HI absorption alone are systematically lower at 0.2 < F < 0.8 by up to 30% compared to the widely used measurement of McDonald et al. (2000), based on a significantly smaller sample of Keck/HIRES data. This discrepancy is probably due to a combination of our improved removal of the metal absorption and cosmic variance, since variations in the flux PDF between different lines-of-sight are large. The HI effective optical depth at 1.7 < z < 4 is best fit with a single power law, (0.0023 +-0.0007) (1+z)^(3.65 +- 0.21), in good agreement with previous measurements from comparable data. We present results of the first survey of high-redshift ( ~ 2.3) OVI absorption systems along parallel lines of sight toward two lensed QSOs. After a careful and well-defined search, we find ten intervening OVI systems. Within the errors, all OVI systems appear at the same redshift and have similar line strengths in front of both QSO images, whereas in most cases CIV or SiIV show more differences across the lines of sight, either in radial velocity or line strength. We conclude that (1) the coherence length of OVI must be much larger than ~ 1 kpc, and (2) an important fraction of the CIV absorbers may not reside in the same volume as OVI. Since Doppler parameters are consistent with photoionization, we propose a model in which CIV occurs in two different photoionized phases, one large, with characteristic sizes of a few hundred kpc and bearing OVI, and another one a factor of ten smaller and containing CIII. This model is able to explain the various transverse differences observed in column density and kinematics. We apply the model successfully to 2 kinds of absorbers, with low and high metallicity. In the low-metallicity regime, [C/H] \~ -2, we find that [C/O] ~ -0.7 is required to explain the observations, which hints at late (z < 6) rather than early metal enrichment. In the high-metallicity regime, the observed dissociation between OVI and CIV gas might be produced by galactic outflows. Altogether, the relative abundances, inhomogeneous CIV and featureless OVI are consistent with gas that has been processed recently before the absorption occurred (thus close to star-forming regions). We measure the matter power spectrum from the Lyman-alpha forest of 31 quasar spectra spanning the redshift range of 1.6-3.6. The optical depth, $\tau$, for absorption of the intergalactic medium is obtained from the flux using the inversion method of Nusser & Haehnelt (1999). The optical depth is converted to density by using a simple power law relation, $\tau \propto (1+\delta)^\alpha$. The non-linear 1D power spectrum of the gas density is then inferred with a method that makes simultaneous use of the 1 and 2 point statistics of the flux and compared against theoretical models with a likelihood analysis. A Cold Dark Matter (CDM) model with standard cosmological parameters fits the data well. The power spectrum amplitude is measured to be (assuming a flat Universe), $\sigma_8 = (0.9 \pm 0.09)\times (\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3)^{-0.3}$, with $\alpha$ varying in the range of $1.56-1.8$ with redshift. Enforcing the same cosmological parameters in all four redshift bins, the likelihood analysis suggests some evolution in the density-temperature relation and the thermal smoothing length of the gas. The inferred evolution is consistent with that expected if reionization of \hep occurred at $z\sim 3.2$. A joint analysis with the WMAP results together with a prior on the Hubble constant as suggested by the HST key project data, yields values of $\Omega_{\rm m}$ and $\sigma_8$ that are consistent with the cosmological concordance model. We use the LUQAS sample of 27 high resolution, high signal-to-noise QSO absorption spectra (Kim et al. 2004) and the results from Croft et al. We analyze the z=2 Ly-alpha and CIV forest along two adjacent lines-of-sight at high S/N and spectral resolution to assess the question of the origin of metals in the intergalactic medium. We find that the gas containing detectable amounts of metals (as seen in absorption by CIV) is less quiescent on scales of a few kpc than the gas without metals. We present a determination of the bispectrum of the flux in the Lyman-alpha forest of QSO absorption spectra obtained from LUQAS which consists of spectra observed with the high resolution Echelle spectrograph UVES. The flux power spectra of the Lyman-alpha forest from a sample of 27 QSOs taken with the high resolution echelle spectrograph UVES on VLT are presented. We find a similar fluctuation amplitude at the peak of the ``3D'' flux power spectrum at k ~ 0.03 (km/sec)^(-1) as the study by Croft et al. (2002), in the same redshift range. The amplitude of the flux power spectrum increases with decreasing redshift if corrected for the increase in the mean flux level as expected if the evolution of the flux power spectrum is sensitive to the gravitational growth of matter density fluctuations. This is in agreement with the findings of McDonald et al. (2000) at larger redshift. The logarithmic slope of the "3D" flux power spectrum, P_F(k), at large scales k < 0.03 (km/sec)^(-1), is 1.4 +- 0.3, i.e. 0.3 shallower than that found by Croft et al. (2002) but consistent within the errors., Comment: 18 pages, 9 PS figures, 6 tables. We demonstrate that the lyman alpha forest flux power spectrum of ``randomised'' QSO absorption spectra is comparable in shape and amplitude to the flux power spectrum of the original observed spectra. In the randomised spectra a random shift in wavelength has been added to the observed absorption lines as identified and fitted with VPFIT. At 0.03 s/km 15 dominate at large scales, k< 0.03 s/km. We further show that a fraction of up to 20 % of the mean flux decrement is contributed by strong absorbers. Analysis of the flux power spectrum which use numerical simulations with too few strong absorption systems calibrated with the observed mean flux are likely to underestimate the inferred rms fluctuation amplitude and the slope of the initial dark matter matter power spectrum. In a combined analysis with other data which constrains the dark matter power spectrum on larger scales this can result in a spurious detection of a running spectral index., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. In this first paper of a series, we report on the use of quasar spectra obtained with the UVES high resolution spectrograph and available through the ESO VLT archive to build the first sample of sub-DLA systems, absorbers with HI column densities > 10^{19} cm^{-2} but lower than the classical definition of damped Ly-alpha systems (DLAs) 2x10^{20} cm^{-2}. A systematic investigation of the properties of these systems and a comparison with those of the DLAs (Paper II of this series; Peroux et al. 2003b) is expected to provide new clues on the association of high column density absorbers with galaxies and on the overall evolution of the neutral hydrogen gas mass and metal content in the Universe. In the spectra of 22 quasars which were found suitable for a sub-DLA search, we identified 12 sub-DLAs and 1 borderline case between the DLA and sub-DLA systems in the redshift interval z = 1.8-4.3. We measured the column densities of HI and up to 16 ions of low-, intermediate- and high-ionization. We further investigated the significance of the ionization corrections in the determination of the chemical abundances from the low-ionization ions in the sub-DLA HI column density range. Using the predictions of different ion ratios as a function of the ionization parameter computed with the CLOUDY software package, we have estimated that with the exception of one case, the ionization corrections to the abundances of 9 systems for which we were able to constrain the ionization parameter, are lower than 0.2 dex for all of the elements except AlII and ZnII down to HI column densities of log N(HI) = 19.3 cm^{-2}. We finally present the first sub-DLA chemical abundance database which contains the abundance measurements of 11 different elements (O, C, Si, N, S, Mg, Al, Fe, Ni, Zn, and Cr)., Comment: 35 pages, 43 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS (high-resolution figures available on request from the authors or in the journal)

We investigate the scaling properties of the interface fluctuation width for the $Q$-mer and $Q$-particle-correlated deposition-evaporation models. These models are constrained with a global conservation law that the particle number at each height is conserved modulo $Q$. In equilibrium, the stationary roughness is anomalous but universal with roughness exponent $\alpha=1/3$, while the early time evolution shows nonuniversal behavior with growth exponent $\beta$ varying with models and $Q$. Nonequilibrium surfaces display diverse growing/stationary behavior. The remarkable efficiency of the UVES spectrograph at the VLT has made it possible to push high-resolution, high-S/N ground observations of the Ly-a forest down to z~1.5, gaining new insight into the physical conditions of the intergalactic medium and its evolution over more than 90% of the cosmic time. The universal expansion, the UV ionizing background and the gravitational condensation of structures are the driving factors shaping the number density and the column density distribution of the absorbers. A (limited) contribution of UV photons produced by galaxies is found to be important to reproduce the observed evolutionary pattern at very high and low redshift. The Lyman forest contains most of the baryons, at least at z>1.5, and acts as a reservoir for galaxy formation. The typical Doppler parameter at a fixed column density is measured to slightly increase with decreasing redshift, but the inferred temperature at the mean density is increasing with redshift. A sample of 8 QSOs with 1.7 < z_em < 3.7 has been observed with VLT/UVES at a typical resolution 45000 and S/N~40-50. Thanks to the two-arm design of the spectrograph, a remarkable efficiency has been achieved below 400nm and above 800nm, which translates immediately in the possibility of obtaining new results, especially at z<2.5.
