2. Gatherplot: A Non-Overlapping Scatterplot

Abstract

Scatterplots are a common tool for exploring multidimensional datasets, especially in the form of scatterplot matrices (SPLOMs). However, scatterplots suffer from overplotting when categorical variables are mapped to one or two axes, or the same continuous variable is used for both axes. Previous methods such as histograms or violin plots use aggregation, which makes brushing and linking difficult. To address this, we propose gatherplots, an extension of scatterplots to manage the overplotting problem. Gatherplots are a form of unit visualization, which avoid aggregation and maintain the identity of individual objects to ease visual perception. In gatherplots, every visual mark that maps to the same position coalesces to form a packed entity, thereby making it easier to see the overview of data groupings. The size and aspect ratio of marks can also be changed dynamically to make it easier to compare the composition of different groups. In the case of a categorical variable vs. a categorical variable, we propose a heuristic to decide bin sizes for optimal space usage. To validate our work, we conducted a crowdsourced user study that shows that gatherplots enable people to assess data distribution more quickly and more correctly than when using jittered scatterplots., Comment: 16 pages. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1708.08033

Abstract

BackgroundEnd colostomy rates following colorectal resection vary across institutions in high-income settings, being influenced by patient, disease, surgeon and system factors. This study aimed to assess global variation in end colostomy rates after left-sided colorectal resection.MethodsThis study comprised an analysis of GlobalSurg-1 and -2 international, prospective, observational cohort studies (2014, 2016), including consecutive adult patients undergoing elective or emergency left-sided colorectal resection within discrete 2-week windows. Countries were grouped into high-, middle- and low-income tertiles according to the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI). Factors associated with colostomy formation versus primary anastomosis were explored using a multilevel, multivariable logistic regression model.ResultsIn total, 1635 patients from 242 hospitals in 57 countries undergoing left-sided colorectal resection were included: 113 (6·9 per cent) from low-HDI, 254 (15·5 per cent) from middle-HDI and 1268 (77·6 per cent) from high-HDI countries. Abstract

BackgroundThe World Health Organization (WHO) Surgical Safety Checklist has fostered safe practice for 10 years, yet its place in emergency surgery has not been assessed on a global scale. The aim of this study was to evaluate reported checklist use in emergency settings and examine the relationship with perioperative mortality in patients who had emergency laparotomy.MethodsIn two multinational cohort studies, adults undergoing emergency laparotomy were compared with those having elective gastrointestinal surgery. Relationships between reported checklist use and mortality were determined using multivariable logistic regression and bootstrapped simulation.ResultsOf 12 296 patients included from 76 countries, 4843 underwent emergency laparotomy. After adjusting for patient and disease factors, checklist use before emergency laparotomy was more common in countries with a high Human Development Index (HDI) (2455 of 2741, 89·6 per cent) compared with that in countries with a middle (753 of 1242, 60·6 per cent; odds ratio (OR) 0·17, 95 per cent c.i. 0·14 to 0·21, P < 0·001) or low (363 of 860, 42·2 per cent; OR 0·08, 0·07 to 0·10, P < 0·001) HDI. Checklist use was less common in elective surgery than for emergency laparotomy in high-HDI countries (risk difference -9·4 (95 per cent c.i. -11·9 to -6·9) per cent; P < 0·001), but the relationship was reversed in low-HDI countries (+12·1 (+7·0 to +17·3) per cent; P < 0·001). In multivariable models, checklist use was associated with a lower 30-day perioperative mortality (OR 0·60, 0·50 to 0·73; P < 0·001). The greatest absolute benefit was seen for emergency surgery in low- and middle-HDI countries.ConclusionChecklist use in emergency laparotomy was associated with a significantly lower perioperative mortality rate. Checklist use in low-HDI countries was half that in high-HDI countries.

15. Gatherplots: Generalized Scatterplots for Nominal Data

Abstract

Overplotting of data points is a common problem when visualizing large datasets in a scatterplot, particularly when mapping nominal dimensions to one of the scatterplot axes. Transparency, aggregation, and jittering have previously been suggested to address this issue, but these solutions all have drawbacks for assessing the data distribution in the plot. We propose gatherplots, an extension of scatterplots that eliminates overplotting, particularly for nominal variables. In gatherplots, every data point that maps to the same position coalesces to form a stacked entity, thereby making it easier to compare the absolute and relative sizes of data groupings. The size and aspect ratio of data points can also be changed dynamically to make it easier to compare the composition of different groups. Furthermore, several embedded interaction techniques support slicing and dicing the gatherplot by pivoting on particular dimensions, ranges, and values in the dataset. Our evaluation shows that gatherplots enable users from the general public to judge the relative portion of subgroups more quickly and more correctly than when using conventional scatterplots with jittering. Furthermore, a review conducted by a group of visualization experts evaluated and commented on the gatherplot design.

Abstract

The prevalence of dementia, a condition associated with high social costs, is rising alongside the aging population. Early diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a precursor to dementia, is essential for effective intervention. Recent research has focused on diagnosing cognitive function in the elderly by analyzing behavioral data, such as gait and hand movements. Compared to traditional neuropsychological assessment methods, behavioral data-based assessments offer advantages, including reduced fatigue for patients and examiners, faster testing procedures, and more objective evaluation of results. This study reviews 15 research projects from the past five years (2018–2023) that have utilized behavioral data to assess cognitive function. It examines the specific gait and hand movement variables used, the technologies implemented, and user experiences reported in these studies. As these types of assessments require new technologies or environments, we analyzed usability issues that should be considered for accurate cognitive assessment. 17. Linear Programming Models: Identifying Common Errors in Engineering Students' Work with Complex Word Problems

Abstract

In linear programming, many students find it difficult to translate a verbal description of a problem into a valid mathematical model. To better understand this, we examine the existing characteristics of college engineering students' errors across linear programming (LP) problems. We examined textbooks to identify the types of problems typically found in introductory linear programming courses. We then developed a comprehensive set of tasks and analyzed students' work to create a taxonomy of the errors and issues that students exhibited. From our findings, we define four categories of identified error types: (1) decision variable errors, (2) variable relationship errors, (3) notation errors, and (4) form errors. This study contributes to the research by investigating students' work in an area of undergraduate mathematics that has not been heavily explored before. Findings suggest specific areas of focus for future work in helping students develop their understanding of linear programming models and mathematical modeling in word problems in general.

Abstract

As online health communities (OHCs) grow, users find it challenging to properly search, read, and contribute to the community because of its overwhelming content. Our goal is to understand OHC users' needs and requirements for better delivering large-scale OHC content. We interviewed 14 OHC users with interests in diabetes to investigate their attitudes and needs towards using OHCs and 2 OHC administrators to assess our findings. Four personas -Coddlers, Scientists, Adventurers, and Opportunists- emerged, which inform users' interaction behavior and attitudes with OHCs. An individual can possess the characteristics of multiple personas, which can also change over time. Our personas uniquely describe users' OHC participation intertwined with illness contexts compared to existing social types in general online communities. We discuss broader implications back to the literature and how our findings apply to other illness contexts in OHCs. Abstract

Previous research demonstrated the potential of using speakers as sensors to detect ear canal conditions. This study continues that effort by using a single speaker to measure electrical impedance across various acoustic loads. Electrical impedance data were collected and preprocessed for machine learning model training. Different image forms were tested, including magnitude only and combined magnitude phase. Using 2100 data samples with convolutional neural network-based models (AlexNet, ResNet, and DenseNet), binary and multiclass classifications achieved average accuracies of 0.9716 and 0.907, respectively. Abstract

BackgroundPatients with sinus node dysfunction (SND) have increased risk of atrial tachyarrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation (AF). To date, treatment patterns and outcomes of patients with SND and AF have not been well described.HypothesisPatients with SND and AF have higher risk of adverse cardiovascular outcomes.MethodsSinus node dysfunction was defined clinically, based on treating physician. Treatment patterns were described and logistic regression analysis performed to assess outcomes.ResultsOverall, 1710 (17.7%) out of 9631 patients had SND at enrollment. Patients with SND and AF had increased comorbid medical illnesses, more severe symptoms (European Heart Rhythm Association class IV: 17.5% vs 13.9%; P = 0.0007), and poorer quality of life (median 12-month Atrial Fibrillation Effect on Quality of Life score: 79.6 vs 85.2; P = 0.0008). There were no differences in AF management strategy between patients with SND and those without (rate control, 69.7% vs 67.7%; rhythm control, 30.0% vs 32.0%; P = 0.11). After adjustment, patients with SND were more likely than those without SND to progress from paroxysmal AF at baseline to persistent or permanent AF at any follow-up, or persistent AF at baseline to permanent AF at any follow-up (odds ratio: 1.23, 95% confidence interval: 1.01-1.49, P = 0.035). However, there was no association between SND and major risk-adjusted outcomes.ConclusionsSinus node dysfunction is present in 1 of 6 patients with AF and is associated with increased comorbidities and higher symptom burden. However, SND is not associated with an increase in major risk-adjusted outcomes.
