We present a study on the evolution of transitional dwarf galaxies, specifically dwarf lenticulars (dS0s) and early-type dwarfs with blue cores (ETdG(bc)s), driven by environmental processes in the Virgo cluster utilizing the Extended Virgo Cluster Catalog. We investigated the morphological fraction and stellar mass of transitional dwarf galaxies in relation to the clustercentric distance, compared to dwarf elliptical galaxies (dEs) and dwarf irregular galaxies (dIrrs). We found that dS0s beyond 0.7R_vir exhibit a similar trend in the morphology-clustercentric distance relation to dEs, demonstrating a decreasing fraction with clustercentric distance, whereas ETdG(bc)s display an opposite trend to dS0s. The spatial distributions of transitional dwarf galaxies and dEs correlate with the mass, in which fractions of bright, massive galaxies increase towards the central region of the Virgo cluster. In the mass-clustercentric distance plane, dS0s exhibit a skewed distribution that favors more massive galaxies than dEs at a given clustercentric distance. In the projected phase-space diagram, dS0s are scarce in the stripped region, whereas ETdG(bc)s are absent in both the stripped and virialized regions. In addition, the dS0s in the virialized region are predominantly brighter and more massive than the dEs, indicating that the transformation of dS0s into dEs depends on the stellar mass. We propose that the majority of observed dS0s constitute a population that has settled into the Virgo cluster, whereas ETdG(bc)s represent a recently accreted population. Moir\'e superlattice of twisted hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) has emerged as an advanced atomically thin van der Waals interfacial ferroelectricity platform. Nanoscale periodic ferroelectric moir\'e domains with out-of-plane potentials in twisted hBN allow the hosting of remote Coulomb superlattice potentials to adjacent two-dimensional materials for tailoring strongly correlated properties. Therefore, the new strategies for engineering moir\'e length, angle, and potential strength are essential for developing programmable quantum materials and advanced twistronics applications devices. Here, we demonstrate the realization of twisted hBN-based moir\'e superlattice platforms and visualize the moir\'e domains and ferroelectric properties using Kelvin probe force microscopy. Also, we report the KPFM result of regular moir\'e superlattice in the large area. It offers the possibility to reproduce uniform moir\'e structures with precise control piezo stage stacking and heat annealing. We demonstrate the high tunability of twisted hBN moir\'e platforms and achieve cumulative multi-ferroelectric polarization and multi-level domains with multiple angle mismatched interfaces. Additionally, we observe the quasi-1D anisotropic moir\'e domains and show the highest resolution analysis of the local built-in strain between adjacent hBN layers compared to the conventional methods. Furthermore, we demonstrate in-situ manipulation of moir\'e superlattice potential strength using femtosecond pulse laser irradiation, which results in the optical phonon-induced atomic displacement at the hBN moir\'e interfaces. Atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) has emerged as an essential material for the encapsulation layer in van der Waals heterostructures and efficient deep ultra-violet optoelectronics. This is primarily due to its remarkable physical properties and ultrawide bandgap (close to 6 eV, and even larger in some cases) properties. Color centers in hBN refer to intrinsic vacancies and extrinsic impurities within the 2D crystal lattice, which result in distinct optical properties in the ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared (IR) range. Furthermore, each color center in hBN exhibits a unique emission spectrum and possesses various spin properties. These characteristics open up possibilities for the development of next-generation optoelectronics and quantum information applications, including room-temperature single-photon sources and quantum sensors. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview of the atomic configuration, optical and quantum properties, and different techniques employed for the formation of color centers in hBN. A deep understanding of color centers in hBN allows for advances in the development of next-generation UV optoelectronic applications, solid-state quantum technologies, and nanophotonics by harnessing the exceptional capabilities offered by hBN color centers.

The formation pathways of compact stellar systems (CSSs) are still under debate. We utilize the \NH\ simulation to investigate the origins of such objects in the field environment. We identified 55 CSS candidates in the simulation whose properties are similar to those of the observed ultra-compact dwarfs and compact ellipticals. All but two most massive objects (compact elliptical candidates) are a result of a short starburst. Sixteen are formed by tidal stripping, while the other 39 are intrinsically compact from their birth. The stripped objects originate from dwarf-like galaxies with a dark halo, but most of their dark matter is stripped through their orbital motion around a more massive neighbor galaxy. The 39 intrinsically compact systems are further divided into ``associated'' or ``isolated'' groups, depending on whether they were born near a massive dark halo or not. The isolated intrinsic compact objects (7) are born in a dark halo and their stellar properties are older and metal-poor compared to the associated counterparts (32). The stripped compact objects occupy a distinct region in the age-metallicity plane from the intrinsic compact objects. We present the construction of an image similarity retrieval engine for the morphological classification of galaxies using the Convolutional AutoEncoder (CAE). The CAE is trained on 90,370 preprocessed Sloan Digital Sky Survey galaxy images listed in the Galaxy Zoo 2 (GZ2) catalog. The visually similar output images returned by the trained CAE suggest that the encoder efficiently compresses input images into latent features, which are then used to calculate similarity parameters. Our Tool for Searching a similar Galaxy Image based on a Convolutional Autoencoder using Similarity (TSGICAS) leverages this similarity parameter to classify galaxies' morphological types, enabling the identification of a wider range of classes with high accuracy compared to traditional supervised ML techniques. This approach streamlines the researcher's work by allowing quick prioritization of the most relevant images from the latent feature database. We investigate the accuracy of our automatic morphological classifications using three galaxy catalogs: GZ2, Extraction de Formes Id\'ealis\'ees de Galaxies en Imagerie (EFIGI), and Nair $\&$ Abraham (NA10). The correlation coefficients between the morphological types of input and retrieved galaxy images were found to be 0.735, 0.811, and 0.815 for GZ2, EFIGI, and NA10 catalogs, respectively. Despite differences in morphology tags between input and retrieved galaxy images, visual inspection showed that the two galaxies were very similar, highlighting TSGICAS's superior performance in image similarity search. We propose that morphological classifications of galaxies using TSGICAS are fast and efficient, making it a valuable tool for detailed galaxy morphological classifications in other imaging surveys., Comment: Accepted for publication to PASP; 19 pages, 18 figures

The presence of transitional dwarf galaxies in filaments and cluster outskirts may be closely related to pre-processing in the filament; however, the underlying mechanism is not yet comprehensively understood. We present the spatially resolved chemical and kinematical properties of three blue-cored dwarf early-type galaxies (dE(bc)s) in the Virgo cluster and Virgo-related filaments (Crater & Virgo III) using the Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral-field spectrograph (SAMI) Galaxy Survey. We map the spatial distribution of H-alpha, oxygen abundance (O/H), nitrogen-to-oxygen abundance ratio (N/O), stellar population age, and gas-stellar internal kinematics. We find irregular shapes of enhanced star-forming regions from the centers to the outlying regions of blue cores in dE(bc)s. These regions are relatively metal-poor compared with the surrounding regions, rendering the overall metallicity gradient of each galaxy positive. Furthermore, they exhibit higher N/O ratios at a given O/H relative to their surroundings, implying metal-poor gas infall by external processes. The equivalent width of the H-alpha emission line in metal-poor regions indicates young age of star formation, 6-8 Myr. The disturbed ionized gas velocity field, one of the most prominent features of galaxy mergers is also discovered in two dE(bc)s. We propose that a moderately dense filament environment is favorable for the formation of blue cores in dEs, in which dE(bc)s in filaments may have already been transformed before they fall into the Virgo cluster. The presence of blue-cored dwarf early-type galaxies (dE(bc)s) in high-density environments supports the scenario of the transformation of infalling late-type galaxies into quiescent dwarf early-type galaxies by environmental effects. While low-density environments lacking environmental processes could not be relevant to the formation of dE(bc)s, we discovered a large sample of rare dE(bc)s in isolated environments at z < 0.01 using the NASA-Sloan Atlas catalog. Thirty-two isolated dE(bc)s were identified by visual inspection of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey images and g - r color profiles. We found that (1) isolated dE(bc)s exhibit similar structural parameters to dE(bc)s in the Virgo cluster; (2) based on the ultraviolet-r color-magnitude relation, color gradients, and optical emission lines of dE(bc)s, isolated dE(bc)s show more vigorous, centrally concentrated SF compared to their counterparts in the Virgo cluster; (3) at a given stellar mass, isolated dE(bc)s tend to have a larger fraction of gas mass than their Virgo counterparts. We discuss a scenario of episodic SF sustained by gas accretion, suggested by Sanchez Almeida et al., in which the star-bursting blue compact dwarf galaxy (BCD)-quiescent BCD (QBCD) cycle can be repeated during the Hubble time. We suggest that, in this cadence, isolated dE(bc)s might be QBCDs at pre- or post-BCD stages. Context. The physical state of most of the baryonic matter in the local universe is unknown, which is commonly referred to as the ``missing baryon problem". It is theorized that at least half of these missing baryons are in a warm-hot, low-density phase outside of the virialized dark-matter halos. Aims. We make an attempt to find the signature of this warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) phase in the filaments of the nearby Virgo cluster by using optical and Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect data. Methods. Specifically, we use a filament-galaxy catalog created from the HyperLeda database and an all-sky Compton-y map extracted from the Planck satellite data for 2-dimensional cross-correlation analysis by applying spherical harmonics transform. Significance test is based on the null-test simulations which exploits advanced cut-sky analysis tools for a proper map reconstruction. To place upper limits on the WHIM density in the Virgo filaments, realistic baryonic density modelling within the cosmic filaments is done based on state-of-the-art hydro-simulations, and it's done within the signal-boosting routine. Results. The cross-correlation signal is found to be too dim compared to the noise level in the Planck y-map. At 3$\sigma$ confidence level, the upper limit on volume-average WHIM density turns out to be $\left\langle n_e \right\rangle \lt 4\times10^{-4} cm^{-3}$, which is indeed consistent with the WHIM parameter space as predicted from simulations., Comment: Currently under the revision process to be published in the journal of Astronomy & Astrophysics
