Type I interferons (IFNs) exert a broad range of biological effects important in coordinating immune responses, which have classically been studied in the context of pathogen clearance. Yet, whether immunomodulatory bacteria operate through IFN pathways to support intestinal immune tolerance remains elusive. Here, we reveal that the commensal bacterium, Bacteroides fragilis, utilizes canonical antiviral pathways to modulate intestinal dendritic cells (DCs) and regulatory T cell (Treg) responses. Specifically, IFN signaling is required for commensal-induced tolerance as IFNAR1-deficient DCs display blunted IL-10 and IL-27 production in response to B. fragilis. We further establish that IFN-driven IL-27 in DCs is critical in shaping the ensuing Foxp3+ Treg via IL-27Rα signaling. Consistent with these findings, single-cell RNA sequencing of gut Tregs demonstrated that colonization with B. fragilis promotes a distinct IFN gene signature in Foxp3+ Tregs during intestinal inflammation. Altogether, our findings demonstrate a critical role of commensal-mediated immune tolerance via tonic type I IFN signaling.

Analysis of the chemical components from the culture broth of the marine bacterium Saccharomonospora sp. CNQ-490 has yielded three novel compounds: saccharobisindole (1), neoasterric methyl ester (2), and 7-chloro-4(1H)-quinolone (3), in addition to acremonidine E (4), pinselin (5), penicitrinon A (6), and penicitrinon E (7). The chemical structures of the three novel compounds were elucidated by the interpretation of 1D, 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) data. Compound 2 generated weak inhibition activity against Bacillus subtilis KCTC2441 and Staphylococcus aureus KCTC1927 at concentrations of 32 μg/mL and 64 μg/mL, respectively, whereas compounds 1 and 3 did not have any observable effects. In addition, compound 2 displayed weak anti-quorum sensing (QS) effects against S. aureus KCTC1927 and Micrococcus luteus SCO560.

Background This study compared trends in norovirus cases to determine whether chief complaint–based emergency department (ED) visit data could reflect trends of norovirus in Korea. Methods The ED visits from the National Emergency Department Information System database and the weekly reported number of noroviruses from the sentinel surveillance system were collected between August 2017 and December 2020. The correlation between weekly norovirus cases and weekly ED visits considering the chief complaint and discharge diagnosis code was estimated using a 3-week moving average. Results In total, 6 399 774 patients with chief complaints related to digestive system disease visited an ED. A higher correlation between reported norovirus cases and ED visit with chief complaint of vomiting and discharge diagnosis code of gastroenteritis and colitis of unspecified origin or other and unspecified gastroenteritis and colitis of infectious origin was observed (R = 0.88, P <.0001). The correlation was highest for the age group 0–4 years (R = 0.89, P <.0001). However, no correlation was observed between the reported norovirus cases and the number of ED visits with norovirus identified as a discharge diagnosis code. Conclusions ED visit data considering a combination of chief complaints and discharged diagnosis code would be useful for early detection of infectious disease trends. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Electrocorticogram (ECoG) is an electrophysiological signal that results from the summation of neuronal activity near the cortical surface. To record ECoG signals, the scalp and skull are surgically opened and electrodes are placed on the cortical surface, either epidurally or subdurally. Owing to its improved spatiotemporal resolution and signal quality compared with electroencephalography, it is widely used to diagnose and treat neurological disorders in clinical settings for several decades, despite the invasiveness of ECoG. Recently, ECoG is applied in research to explore brain functions and connectivity, brain‐computer interfaces, and brain‐machine interfaces. In addition to the need for ECoG in neuroscience research, ECoG devices have advanced in terms of materials, fabrication, and function to overcome the limitations of commercially available ECoG arrays. Here, the conventional use of ECoG in clinical medicine, the new applications of ECoG in basic neuroscience research, and the future challenges in translating recent developments in ECoG devices for clinical use are described.
