The development of sustainable transportation and communication systems requires an increase in both energy density and capacity retention of Li-batteries. Using substrates forming a solid solution with body centered cubic Li enhances the cycle stability of anode-less batteries. However, it remains unclear how the substrate microstructure affects the lithiation behavior. Here, we deploy a correlative, near-atomic scale probing approach through combined ion- and electron-microscopy to examine the distribution of Li in Li-Ag diffusion couples as model system. We reveal that Li regions with over 93.8% at.% nucleate within Ag at random high angle grain boundaries, whereas grain interiors are not lithiated. We evidence the role of kinetics and mechanical constraint from the microstructure over equilibrium thermodynamics in dictating the lithiation process. The findings suggest that grain size and grain boundary character are critical to enhance the electrochemical performance of interlayers/electrodes, particularly for improving lithiation kinetics and hence reducing dendrite formation.

The understanding of protein structure, folding, and interaction with other proteins remains one of the grand challenges of modern biology. Tremendous progress has been made thanks to X-ray- or electron-based techniques that have provided atomic configurations of proteins, and their solvation shell. These techniques though require a large number of similar molecules to provide an average view, and lack detailed compositional information that might play a major role in the biochemical activity of these macromolecules. Based on its intrinsic performance and recent impact in materials science, atom probe tomography (APT) has been touted as a potential novel tool to analyse biological materials, including proteins. However, analysis of biomolecules in their native, hydrated state by APT have not yet been routinely achieved, and the technique's true capabilities remain to be demonstrated. Here, we present and discuss systematic analyses of individual amino-acids in frozen aqueous solutions on two different nanoporous metal supports across a wide range of analysis conditions. Using a ratio of the molecular ions of water as a descriptor for the conditions of electrostatic field, we study the fragmentation and behavior of those amino acids. We discuss the importance sample support, specimen preparation route, acquisition conditions and data analysis, to pave the way towards establishing guidelines for cryo-APT analysis of biomolecules.

The numerous stories around LK-99 as a possible room-temperature superconductor over the summer of 2023 epitomise that materials are more than a bulk crystallographic structure or an expected composition. Like all materials, those at the core of technologies for the energy generation transition, including batteries, catalysts or quantum materials draw their properties from a hierarchy of microstructural features where impurities can dramatically influence the outcomes. As we move towards a circular economy, the recycling of materials will inevitably create fluxes of increasingly impure materials, generating new challenges for fabricating materials with controlled properties. Here, we provide our perspective on how high-end microscopy and microanalysis have helped us to understand relationships between synthesis, processing and microstructure, avoiding imprecise or even erroneous interpretations on the origins of the properties from a range of materials. We highlight examples of how unexpected impurities and their spatial distribution on the nanoscale can be turned into an advantage to define pathways for synthesis of materials with new and novel sets of physical properties.

The application of atom probe tomography (APT) to frozen liquids is limited by difficulties in specimen preparation. Here, we report on the use of nanoporous Cu needles as a physical framework to hold water ice for investigation using APT. Nanoporous Cu needles are prepared by the electropolishing and dealloying of Cu-Mn matchstick precursors. Cryogenic scanning electron microscopy and focused-ion beam milling reveal a hierarchical, dendritic, highly-wettable microstructure. The atom probe mass spectrum is dominated by peaks of Cu+ and H(H2O)n+ up to n <= 3, and the reconstructed volume shows the protrusion of a Cu ligament into an ice-filled pore. The continuous Cu ligament network electrically connects the apex to the cryostage, leading to enhanced electric field at the apex and increased cooling, both of which simplify the mass spectrum compared to previous reports.

Field evaporation from ionic or covalently bonded materials often leads to the emission of molecular ions. The metastability of these molecular ions, particularly under the influence of the intense electrostatic field (1010 Vm-1), makes them prone to dissociation with or without an exchange of energy amongst them. These processes can affect the analytical performance of atom probe tomography (APT). For instance, neutral species formed through dissociation may not be detected at all or with a time of flight no longer related to their mass, causing their loss from the analysis. Here, we evaluated the changes in the measured composition of FeO, Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 across a wide range of analysis conditions. Possible dissociation reactions are predicted by density-functional theory (DFT) calculations considering the spin states of the molecules. The energetically favoured reactions are traced on to the multi-hit ion correlation histograms, to confirm their existence within experiments, using an automated Python-based routine. The detected reactions are carefully analysed to reflect upon the influence of these neutrals from dissociation reactions on the performance of APT for analysing iron oxides.

2D materials are emerging as promising nanomaterials for applications in energy storage and catalysis. In the wet chemical synthesis of MXenes, these 2D transition metal carbides and nitrides are terminated with a variety of functional groups, and cations such as Li+ are often used to intercalate into the structure to obtain exfoliated nanosheets. Given the various elements involved in their synthesis, it is crucial to determine the detailed chemical composition of the final product, in order to better assess and understand the relationships between composition and properties of these materials. To facilitate atom probe tomography analysis of these materials, a revised specimen preparation method is presented in this study. A colloidal Ti3C2Tz MXene solution was processed into an additive-free free-standing film and specimens were prepared using a dual beam scanning electron microscope / focused ion beam. To mechanically stabilize the fragile specimens, they were coated using an in situ sputtering technique. As various 2D material inks can be processed into such free-standing films, the presented approach is pivotal for enabling atom probe analysis of other 2D materials.

Denoising diffusion models show remarkable performances in generative tasks, and their potential applications in perception tasks are gaining interest. In this paper, we introduce a novel framework named DiffRef3D which adopts the diffusion process on 3D object detection with point clouds for the first time. Specifically, we formulate the proposal refinement stage of two-stage 3D object detectors as a conditional diffusion process. During training, DiffRef3D gradually adds noise to the residuals between proposals and target objects, then applies the noisy residuals to proposals to generate hypotheses. The refinement module utilizes these hypotheses to denoise the noisy residuals and generate accurate box predictions. In the inference phase, DiffRef3D generates initial hypotheses by sampling noise from a Gaussian distribution as residuals and refines the hypotheses through iterative steps. DiffRef3D is a versatile proposal refinement framework that consistently improves the performance of existing 3D object detection models. We demonstrate the significance of DiffRef3D through extensive experiments on the KITTI benchmark. Code will be available.

Through its capability for 3D mapping of Li at the nanoscale, atom probe tomography (APT) is poised to play a key role in understanding the microstructural degradation of lithium-ion batteries (LIB) during successive charge and discharge cycles. However, APT application to materials for LIB is plagued by the field induced delithiation (deintercalation) of Li-ions during the analysis itself that prevents the precise assessment of the Li distribution. Here, we showcase how a thin Cr-coating, in-situ formed on APT specimens of NMC811 in the focused-ion beam (FIB), preserves the sample's integrity and circumvent this deleterious delithiation. Cr-coated specimens demonstrated remarkable improvements in data quality and virtually eliminated premature specimen failures, allowing for more precise measurements via. improved statistics. Through improved data analysis, we reveal substantial cation fluctuations in commercial grade NMC811, including complete grains of LiMnO. The current methodology stands out for its simplicity and cost-effectiveness and is a viable approach to prepare battery cathodes and anodes for systematic APT studies.

Atom probe tomography requires needle-shaped specimens with a diameter typically below 100 nm, making them both very fragile and reactive, and defects (notches at grain boundaries or precipitates) are known to affect the yield and data quality. The use of a conformal coating directly on the sharpened specimen has been proposed to increase yield and reduce background. However, to date, these coatings have been applied ex-situ and mostly are not uniformly. Here, we report on the controlled focused ion beam in-situ deposition of a thin metal film on specimens immediately after specimen preparation. Different metallic targets e.g. Cr were attached to a micromanipulator via a conventional lift-out method and sputtered using the Ga or Xe ions. We showcase the many advantages of coating specimens from metallic to non-metallic materials. We have identified an increase in data quality and yield, an improvement of the mass resolution, as well as an increase in the effective field-of-view enabling visualization of the entire original specimen, including the complete surface oxide layer. The ease of implementation of the approach makes it very attractive for generalizing its use across a very wide range of atom probe analyses.

Reliable and consistent preparation of atom probe tomography (APT) specimens from aqueous and hydrated biological specimens remains a significant challenge. One particularly difficult process step is the use of a focused ion beam (FIB) instrument for preparing the required needle-shaped specimen, typically involving a "lift-out" procedure of a small sample of material. Here, two alternative substrate designs are introduced that enable using FIB only for sharpening, along with example APT datasets. The first design is a laser-cut FIB-style half-grid close to those used for transmission-electron microscopy, that can be used in a grid holder compatible with APT pucks. The second design is a larger, standalone self-supporting substrate called a "crown", with several specimen positions that self-aligns in APT pucks, prepared by electrical discharge machining (EDM). Both designs are made nanoporous, to provide strength to the liquid-substrate interface, using chemical and vacuum dealloying. We select alpha brass a simple, widely available, lower-cost alternative to previously proposed substrates. We present the resulting designs, APT data, and provide suggestions to help drive wider community adoption.

One of the main challenges in LiDAR-based 3D object detection is that the sensors often fail to capture the complete spatial information about the objects due to long distance and occlusion. Two-stage detectors with point cloud completion approaches tackle this problem by adding more points to the regions of interest (RoIs) with a pre-trained network. However, these methods generate dense point clouds of objects for all region proposals, assuming that objects always exist in the RoIs. This leads to the indiscriminate point generation for incorrect proposals as well. Motivated by this, we propose Point Generation R-CNN (PG-RCNN), a novel end-to-end detector that generates semantic surface points of foreground objects for accurate detection. Our method uses a jointly trained RoI point generation module to process the contextual information of RoIs and estimate the complete shape and displacement of foreground objects. For every generated point, PG-RCNN assigns a semantic feature that indicates the estimated foreground probability. Extensive experiments show that the point clouds generated by our method provide geometrically and semantically rich information for refining false positive and misaligned proposals. PG-RCNN achieves competitive performance on the KITTI benchmark, with significantly fewer parameters than state-of-the-art models. MXenes are a family of 2D transition metal carbides and nitrides with remarkable properties and great potential for energy storage and catalysis applications. However, their oxidation behavior is not yet fully understood, and there are still open questions regarding the spatial distribution and precise quantification of surface terminations, intercalated ions, and possible uncontrolled impurities incorporated during synthesis and processing. Here, atom probe tomography analysis of as-synthesized Ti$_3$C$_2$T$_x$ MXenes reveals the presence of alkali (Li, Na) and halogen (Cl, F) elements as well as unetched Al. Following oxidation of the colloidal solution of MXenes, it is observed that the alkalies enriched in TiO$_2$ nanowires. Although these elements are tolerated through the incorporation by wet chemical synthesis, they are often overlooked when the activity of these materials is considered, particularly during catalytic testing. This work demonstrates how the capability of atom probe tomography to image these elements in 3D at the near-atomic scale can help to better understand the activity and degradation of MXenes, in order to guide their synthesis for superior functional properties.

Repeatable and reliable site-specific preparation of specimens for atom probe tomography (APT) at cryogenic temperatures has proven challenging. A generalized workflow is required for cryogenic-specimen preparation including lift-out via focused-ion beam and in-situ deposition of capping layers, to strengthen specimens that will be exposed to high electric field and stresses during field evaporation in APT, and protect them from environment during transfer into the atom probe. Here, we build on existing protocols, and showcase preparation and analysis of a variety of metals, oxides and supported frozen liquids and battery materials. We demonstrate reliable in-situ deposition of a metallic capping layer that significantly improve the atom probe data quality for challenging material systems, particularly battery cathode materials which are subjected to delithiation during the atom probe analysis itself. Our workflow designed is versatile and transferable widely to other instruments.

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells hold promise as energy conversion devices for hydrogen-based power generation and storage. However, the slow kinetics of the oxygen reduction at the cathode imposes the need for highly active catalysts, typically Pt or Pt-based, with a large available area. The scarcity of Pt increases deployment and operational cost, driving the development of novel highly-active material systems. As an alternative, Rh-doped PtNi nanoparticle has been suggested as promising oxygen reduction catalyst, but the 3D distributions of constituent elements in the nanoparticles have remained unclear, making it difficult to guide property optimization. Here, a combination of advanced microscopy and microanalysis techniques is used to study the Rh distribution in the PtNi nanoparticles, and Rh surface segregation is revealed, even with an overall Rh content below 2 at. %. Our findings suggest that doping and surface chemistry must be carefully investigated to establish a clear link with catalytic activity can truly be established.

Introduction of interstitial dopants has opened a new pathway to optimize nanoparticle catalytic activity for, e.g., hydrogen evolution/oxidation and other reactions. Here, we discuss the stability of a property-enhancing dopant, B, introduced through controlled synthesis of an electrocatalyst Pd aerogel. We observe significant removal of B after the hydrogen evolution/oxidation reaction. Ab-initio calculations show that the high stability of sub-surface B in Pd is substantially reduced when H is ad/absorbed on the surface, favoring its departure from the host nanostructure. The destabilization of sub-surface B is more pronounced as more H occupies surface sites and empty interstitial sites. We hence demonstrate that the H2 fuel/product itself favors the microstructural degradation of the electrocatalyst and an associated drop in activity.

Atom probe tomography has been raising in prominence as a microscopy and microanalysis technique to gain sub-nanoscale information from technologically-relevant materials. However, the analysis of some functional ceramics, particularly perovskites, has remained challenging with extremely low yield and success rate. This seems particularly problematic for materials with high piezoelectric activity, which may be difficult to express at the low temperatures necessary for satisfactory atom probe analysis. Here, we demonstrate the analysis of commercial BaTiO3 particles embedded in a metallic matrix. Density-functional theory shows that a metallic coating prevents charge penetration of the electrostatic field, and thereby suppresses the associated volume associated change linked to the piezoelectric effect.

Pd-based electro-catalysts are a key component to improve the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) kinetics from alcohol fuel cells. However, the performance of such catalysts is degraded over time. To understand the microstructural/atomic scale chemical changes responsible for such effect, scanning (transmission) electron microscopies and atom probe tomography (APT) were performed after accelerated degradation tests (ADT). No morphological changes are observed after 1000 MOR cycles. Contrastingly, (1) Pd and B are leached from PdAu nanoparticles and (2) Au-rich regions are formed at the surface of the catalyst. These insights highlight the importance of understanding the chemical modification undergoing upon MOR to design superior catalysts.

Gas-solid reactions are cornerstones of many catalytic and redox processes that will underpin the energy and sustainability transition. The specific case of hydrogen-based iron oxide reduction is the foundation to render the global steel industry fossil-free, an essential target as iron production is the largest single industrial emitter of carbon dioxide. Our perception of gas-solid reactions has not only been limited by the availability of state-of-the-art techniques which can delve into the reacted solids in great structural and chemical detail, but we continue to miss an important reaction partner that defines the thermodynamics and kinetics of gas phase reactions: the gas molecules. In this investigation, we use the latest development in cryogenic atom probe tomography to study the quasi in-situ evolution of gas phase heavy water at iron-iron oxide interfaces resulting from the direct reduction of iron oxide by deuterium gas at 700{\deg}C. The findings provide new insights into the formation kinetics and location of water formed during hydrogen-based reduction of FeO, an its interaction with the ongoing redox reaction.

Dissolution of electrocatalysts during long-term and dynamic operation is a challenging problem in energy conversion and storage devices such as fuel cells and electrolyzers. To develop stable electrocatalysts, we adopt the design concept of segregation engineering, which uses solute segregation prone to electrochemical dissolution at internal defects, i.e., grain boundaries and dislocations. We showcase the feasibility of this approach by stabilizing a model Pt catalyst with an addition of more noble Au (approximately 5 atomic percent). We characterized the defects' nanoscale structure and chemistry, and monitored the electrochemical dissolution of Pt and PtAu alloys by online inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Once segregated to defects, Au atoms can stabilize and hence passivate the most vulnerable sites against electrochemical dissolution and improve the stability and longevity of the Pt electrocatalysts by more than an order of magnitude. This opens pathways to use solute segregation to defects for the development of more stable nanoscale electrocatalysts, a concept applicable for a wide range of catalytic systems.

When solid-state redox-driven phase transformations are associated with mass loss, vacancies are produced that develop into pores. These pores can influence the kinetics of certain redox and phase transformation steps. We investigated the structural and chemical mechanisms in and at pores in a combined experimental-theoretical study, using the reduction of iron oxide by hydrogen as a model system. The redox product (water) accumulates inside the pores and shifts the local equilibrium at the already reduced material back towards re-oxidation into cubic-Fe1-xO (where x refers to Fe deficiency, space group Fm3-m). This effect helps to understand the sluggish reduction of cubic-Fe1-xO by hydrogen, a key process for future sustainable steelmaking.

Layered LiMO2 (M = Ni, Co, Mn, and Al mixture) cathode materials used for Li-ion batteries are reputed to be highly reactive through their surface, where the chemistry changes rapidly when exposed to ambient air. However, conventional electron/spectroscopy-based techniques or thermogravimetric analysis fails to capture the underlying atom-scale chemistry of vulnerable Li species. To study the evolution of the surface composition at the atomic scale, here we use atom probe tomography and probed the surface species formed during exposure of a LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC811) cathode material to air. The compositional analysis evidences the formation of Li2CO3. Site specific examination from a cracked region of an NMC811 particle also suggests the predominant presence of Li2CO3. These insights will help to design improved protocols for cathode synthesis and cell assembly, as well as critical knowledge for cathode degradation

Si-anodes have long been candidates thanks to an expected ten-fold increase in capacity compared to graphite. However, details of the mechanisms governing their degradation remain elusive, hindering science-guided development of long-lived Si-based anodes. Here we demonstrate how the latest developments in cryo-atom probe tomography enable the in-depth analysis of the electrode and electrolyte, and their interface at atomic-level.

The upcoming flexible ultra-thin glass for foldable displays has attracted widespread attention as an alternative to rigid electronic smartphones. However, the detailed compositional effect of the chemical strengthening of the glass is not well understood. The spatially resolved chemistry and the depth of compression layer of tempered glass is far from being clear. In this study, commonly-used X-ray spectroscopy techniques and atom probe tomography (APT) were used comparatively to investigate the distribution of constituent elements in two representative smartphone glass samples: non-tempered and chemically-tempered glasses. Using APT, analysing the alkalis (Li, Na, K, Ca) that could impact the failure of the tempered glass was feasible at sub-nanoscale resolution; demonstrating that APT can be regarded as an alternative technique for imaging chemical distribution in glass for mobile applications.

The search for a new energy paradigm with net-zero carbon emissions requires new technologies for energy generation and storage that are at the crossroad between engineering, chemistry, physics, surface and materials sciences. To keep pushing the inherent boundaries of device performance and lifetime, we need to step away from a cook-and-look approach and aim to establish the scientific ground to guide the design of new materials. This requires strong efforts in establishing bridges between microscopy and spectroscopy techniques, across multiple scales. Here, we discuss how the complementarities of X-ray- and electron-based spectroscopies and atom probe tomography can be exploited in the study of surfaces and sub-surfaces to understand structure-property relationships in electrocatalysts.

Fuel cells recombine water from H2 and O2 thereby powering e.g. cars or houses with no direct carbon emission. In anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs), to reach high power densities, operating at high pH is an alternative to using large volumes of noble metals catalysts at the cathode, where the oxygen-reduction reaction occurs. However, the sluggish kinetics of the hydrogen-oxidation reaction (HOR) hinders upscaling despite promising catalysts. Here, we observe an unexpected ingress of B into Pd nano-catalysts synthesised by wet-chemistry, gain control over this B-doping, and report on its influence on the HOR activity in alkaline conditions. We rationalize our findings using ab-initio calculations of both H- and OH-adsorption on B-doped Pd. Using this "impurity engineering" approach, we thus design Pt-free catalysts as required in electrochemical energy conversion devices, e.g. next generations of AEMFCs, that satisfy the economic and environmental constraints, i.e. reasonable operating costs and long-term stability, to enable the hydrogen economy.

Carbon-supported nanoparticles have been used widely as efficient catalysts due to their enhanced surface-to-volume ratio. To investigate their structure-property relationships, acquiring 3D elemental distribution is highly required. Here, the carbon-supported Pt, PtMn alloy, and ordered Pt3Mn nanoparticles are synthesized and analyzed with atom probe tomography as model systems. The significant difference of Mn distribution after the heat-treatment was found. Finally, the field evaporation behavior of the carbon support was discussed and each acquired reconstruction was compared with computational results from the evaporation simulation. This paper provides a guideline for studies using atom probe tomography on the heterogeneous carbon-nanoparticle system that leads to insights toward to a wide application in carbon-supported nano-catalysts.

The worldwide developments of electric vehicles, as well as large-scale or grid-scale energy storage to compensate the intermittent nature of renewable energy generation has generated a surge of interest in battery technology. Understanding the factors controlling battery capacity and, critically, their degradation mechanisms to ensure long-term, sustainable and safe operation requires detailed knowledge of their microstructure and chemistry, and their evolution under operating conditions, on the nanoscale. Atom probe tomography (APT) provides compositional mapping of materials in three-dimensions with sub-nanometre resolution, and is poised to play a key role in battery research. However, APT is underpinned by an intense electric-field that can drive lithium migration, and many battery materials are reactive oxides, requiring careful handling and sample transfer. Here, we report on the analysis of both anode and cathode materials, and show that electric-field driven migration can be suppressed by using shielding by embedding powder particles in a metallic matrix or by using a thin conducting surface layer. We demonstrate that for a typical cathode material, cryogenic specimen preparation and transport under ultra-high vacuum leads to major delithiation of the specimen during the analysis. In contrast, transport of specimens through air enables analysis of the material. Finally, we discuss the possible physical underpinnings and discuss ways forward to enable shield of the electric field, which helps address the challenges inherent to the APT analysis of battery materials.

Atom Probe Tomography (APT) analysis is being actively used to provide near-atomic-scale information on the composition of complex materials in three-dimensions. In recent years, there has been a surge of interest in the technique to investigate the distribution of hydrogen in metals. However, the presence of hydrogen in the analysis of almost all specimens from nearly all material systems has caused numerous debates as to its origins and impact on the quantitativeness of the measurement. It is often perceived that most H arises from residual gas ionization, therefore affecting primarily materials with a relatively low evaporation field. In this work, we perform systematic investigations to identify the origin of H residuals in APT experiments by combining density-functional theory (DFT) calculations and APT measurements on an alkali and a noble metal, namely Na and Pt, respectively. We report that no H residual is found in Na metal samples, but in Pt, which has a higher evaporation field, a relatively high signal of H is detected. These results contradict the hypothesis of the H signal being due to direct ionization of residual H$_2$ without much interaction with the specimen's surface. Based on DFT, we demonstrate that alkali metals are thermodynamically less likely to be subject to H contamination under APT-operating conditions compared to transition or noble metals. These insights indicate that the detected H-signal is not only from ionization of residual gaseous H$_2$ alone, but is strongly influenced by material-specific physical properties. Hydrogen embrittlement can cause a dramatic deterioration of the mechanical properties of high-strength metallic materials. Despite decades of experimental and modelling studies, the exact underlying mechanisms behind hydrogen embrittlement remain elusive. To unlock understanding of the mechanism and thereby help mitigate the influence of hydrogen and the associated embrittlement, it is essential to examine the interactions of hydrogen with structural defects such as grain boundaries, dislocations and stacking faults. Atom probe tomography (APT) can, in principle, analyse hydrogen located specifically at such microstructural features but faces strong challenges when it comes to charging specimens with hydrogen or deuterium. Here, we describe three different workflows enabling hydrogen/deuterium charging of site-specific APT specimens: namely cathodic, plasma and gas charging. We discuss in detail the caveats of the different approaches in order to help with future research efforts and facilitate further studies of hydrogen in metals. Our study demonstrates successful cathodic and gas charging, with the latter being more promising for the analysis of the high-strength steels at the core of our work.

Numerous metallurgical and materials science applications depend on quantitative atomic-scale characterizations of environmentally-sensitive materials and their transient states. Studying the effect upon materials subjected to thermochemical treatments in specific gaseous atmospheres is of central importance for specifically studying a material's resistance to certain oxidative or hydrogen environments. It is also important for investigating catalytic materials, direct reduction of an oxide, particular surface science reactions or nanoparticle fabrication routes. This manuscript realizes such experiments upon a thermochemical reaction chamber called the Reacthub and allows for transferring treated materials under cryogenic & ultrahigh vacuum workflow conditions for characterisation by either atom probe or scanning Xe+/electron microscopies. Two examples are discussed in the present study. One protocol was in the deuterium gas charging (25 kPa D2 at 200 {\deg}C) of a high-manganese twinning-induced-plasticity steel and characterization of the ingress and trapping of hydrogen at various features (grain boundaries in particular) in efforts to relate this to the steel's hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility. Deuterium was successfully detected after gas charging but most contrast originated from the complex ion FeOD+ signal and the feature may be an artefact. The second example considered the direct deuterium reduction (5 kPa D2 at 700 {\deg}C) of a single crystal wuestite sample, demonstrating that under a standard thermochemical treatment causes rapid reduction upon the nanoscale. Further studies are required for complete confidence about these phenomena, but these experiments successfully demonstrate that how an ex-situ thermochemical treatment can be realised that captures environmentally-sensitive transient states that can be analysed by atomic-scale by atom probe microscope.

Metal nano-aerogels combine a large surface area, a high structural stability, and a high catalytic activity towards a variety of chemical reactions. The performance of such nanostructures is underpinned by the atomic-level distribution of their constituents. Yet monitoring their sub-nanoscale structure and composition to guide property optimization remains extremely challenging. Here, we synthesized Pd nano-aerogels from a K2PdCl4 precursor and two different NaBH4 reductant concentrations in distilled water. Atom probe tomography reveals that the aerogel is poly-crystalline and that impurities (Na, K) are integrated from the solution into grain boundaries. Ab initio calculations indicate that these impurities preferentially bound to the Pd-metal surface and are ultimately found in grain boundaries forming as the particles coalesce during synthesis, with Na atoms thermodynamically equilibrating with the surrounding solution and K atoms remaining between growing grains. If controlled, impurity integration, i.e. grain boundary decoration, may offer opportunities for designing new nano-aerogels.

The eutectic Ga-In (EGaIn) alloy has low vapor pressure, low toxicity, high thermal and electrical conductivities, and thus has shown a great potential for smart material applications. For such applications, EGaIn is maintained above its melting point, below which it undergoes solidification and phase separation. A scientific understanding of the structural and compositional evolution during thermal cycling could help further assess the application range of low-melting-point fusible alloys. Here, we use an integrated suite of cryogenically-enabled advanced microscopy & microanalysis to better understand phase separation and (re)mixing processes in EGaIn. We reveal an overlooked thermal-stimulus-response behaviour for frozen mesoscale EGaIn at cryogenic temperatures, with a sudden volume expansion observed during in-situ heat-cycling, associated with the immiscibility between Ga and In during cooling and the formation of metastable Ga phases. These results emphasize the importance of the kinetics of rejuvenation, and open new paths for EGaIn as a self-healing material.

Capping ligands are crucial to synthesize colloidal nanoparticles with novel functional properties. However, the interaction between capping ligands and their interaction with the crystallographic surfaces of nanoparticles during colloidal synthesis remains a great mystery, due to the lack of direct imaging techniques. In this study, atom probe tomography was adopted to investigate the three-dimensional atomic-scale distribution of two of the most common types of these ligands, cetrimonium and halide (Br and Cl) ions, on Pd nanoparticles. The results, validated using the density functional theory, demonstrated that the Br anions adsorbed on the nanoparticle surfaces promote the adsorption of the cetrimonium cations through electrostatic interactions, stabilizing the Pd {111} facets.

Bimetallic nanoparticles are often superior candidates for a wide range of technological and biomedical applications, thanks to their enhanced catalytic, optical, and magnetic properties, which are often better than their monometallic counterparts. Most of their properties strongly depend on their chemical composition, crystallographic structure, and phase distribution. However, little is known of how their crystal structure, on the nanoscale, transforms over time at elevated temperatures, even though this knowledge is highly relevant in case nanoparticles are used in, e.g., high-temperature catalysis. Au-Fe is a promising bimetallic system where the low-cost and magnetic Fe is combined with catalytically active and plasmonic Au. Here, we report on the in situ temporal evolution of the crystalline ordering in Au-Fe nanoparticles, obtained from a modern laser ablation in liquids synthesis. Our in-depth analysis, complemented by dedicated atomistic simulations, includes a detailed structural characterization by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy as well as atom probe tomography to reveal elemental distributions down to a single atom resolution. We show that the Au-Fe nanoparticles initially exhibit highly complex internal nested nanostructures with a wide range of compositions, phase distributions, and size-depended microstrains. The elevated temperature induces a diffusion-controlled recrystallization and phase merging, resulting in the formation of a single face-centered-cubic ultrastructure in contact with a body-centered cubic phase, which demonstrates the metastability of these structures. Uncovering these unique nanostructures with nested features could be highly attractive from a fundamental viewpoint as they could give further insights into the nanoparticle formation mechanism under non-equilibrium conditions.

Analyzing porous (nano)materials by the atom probe tomography has been notoriously difficult. The electrostatic pressure intensifies stress at voids which results in premature failure of the specimen, and the electrostatic field distribution near voids lead to aberrations that are difficult to predict. Here we propose a new encapsulating method for a porous sample using a low-melting-point Bi-In-Sn alloy, known as Fields metal. As a model porous sample, we used single-crystalline wustite following direct hydrogen-reduced into iron. The complete encapsulation is performed using in-situ heating on the stage of the scanning-electron microscope up to approx. 70 Celsius. No visible corrosion nor dissolution of the sample occurred. Subsequently specimens are shaped by focused ion beam milling under cryogenic conditions at -190 Celsius. The proposed approach is versatile, can be applied to provide good quality atom probe datasets from microporous materials.

We report on atom probe tomography analyses of Pd and Pd@Au nanoparticles embedded in a Ni matrix and the effects of local evaporation field variations on the atom probe data. In order to assess the integrity of the reconstructed atom maps, we performed numerical simulations of the field evaporation processes and compared the simulated datasets with experimentally acquired data. The distortions seen in the atom maps for both Pd and Pd@Au nanoparticles could be mostly ascribed to local variations in chemical composition and elemental evaporation fields. The evaporation field values for Pd and Ni, taken from the image hump model and assumed in the simulations, yielded a good agreement between experimental and simulation results. In contrast, the evaporation field for Au, as predicted from the image hump model, appeared to be substantially overestimated and resulted in a large discrepancy between experiments and simulations.

Photoelectrochemical water splitting is a promising route to produce hydrogen from solar energy. However, corrosion of semiconducting photoelectrodes remains a fundamental challenge for their practical application. The stability of BiVO4, one of the best performing photoanode materials, is systematically examined here using an illuminated scanning flow cell to measure its dissolution operando. The dissolution rates of BiVO4 under illumination depend on the electrolyte and decrease in the order: borate (pH=9.3) > phosphate (pH=7.2) > citrate (pH=7.0). BiVO4 exhibits an inherent lack of stability during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), while hole-scavenging citrate electrolyte offers kinetic protection. The dissolution of Bi peaks at different potentials than the dissolution of V in phosphate buffer, whereas both ions dissolve simultaneously in borate buffer. The life cycle of a 90 nm BiVO4 film is monitored during one hour of light-driven OER in borate buffer. The photocurrent and dissolution rates show independent trends with time, highlighting the importance to measure both quantities operando. Dissolution rates are correlated to the surface morphology and chemistry characterized using electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and atom probe tomography. These correlative measurements further the understanding on corrosion processes of photoelectrodes down to the nanoscopic scale to facilitate their future developments.

With 1.85 billion tons produced per year, steel is the most important material class in terms of volume and environmental impact. While steel is a sustainability enabler, for instance through lightweight design, magnetic devices, and efficient turbines, its primary production is not. For 3000 years, iron has been reduced from ores using carbon. Today 2.1 tons CO2 are produced per ton of steel, causing 30% of the global CO2 emissions in the manufacturing sector, which translates to 6.5% of the global CO2 emissions. These numbers qualify iron- and steel-making as the largest single industrial greenhouse gas emission source. The envisaged future industrial route to mitigate these CO2 emissions targets green hydrogen as a reductant. Although this reaction has been studied for decades, its kinetics is not well understood, particularly during the wustite reduction step which is dramatically slower than the hematite reduction. Many rate-limiting factors of this reaction are set by the micro- and nanostructure as well as the local chemistry of the ores. Their quantification allows knowledge-driven ore preparation and process optimization to make the hydrogen-based reduction of iron ores commercially viable, enabling the required massive CO2 mitigation to ease global warming. Here, we report on a multi-scale structure and composition analysis of iron reduced from hematite with pure H2, reaching down to near-atomic scale.

This study focuses on the synthesis of FeRh nanoparticles via pulsed laser ablation in liquid and on controlling the oxidation of the synthesized nanoparticles. Formation of monomodal {\gamma}-FeRh nanoparticles was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and their composition confirmed by atom probe tomography (APT). On these particles, three major contributors to oxidation were analysed: 1) dissolved oxygen in the organic solvents, 2) the bound oxygen in the solvent and 3) oxygen in the atmosphere above the solvent. The decrease of oxidation for optimized ablation conditions was confirmed through energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) and M\"ossbauer spectroscopy. Furthermore, the time dependence of oxidation was monitored for dried FeRh nanoparticles powders using ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy (FMR). By magnetophoretic separation, B2-FeRh nanoparticles could be extracted from the solution and characteristic differences of nanostrand formation between {\gamma}-FeRh and B2-FeRh nanoparticles were observed.

The incorporation of impurities during the chemical synthesis of nanomaterials is usually uncontrolled and rarely reported because of the formidable challenge that constitutes measuring trace amounts of often light elements with sub nanometre spatial resolution. Yet these foreign elements influence functional properties, by e.g. doping. Here we demonstrate how the synthesis and partial reduction reaction on hollow TiO2 nanowires leads to the introduction of parts-per-millions of boron, sodium, and nitrogen from the reduction reaction with sodium borohydride at the surface of the TiO2 nanowire. This doping explains the presence of oxygen vacancies at the surface that enhance the activity. Our results obtained on model metal-oxide nanomaterials shed light on the general process leading to the uncontrolled incorporation of trace impurities that can have a dramatic effect on their potential use in energy-harvesting applications.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) nanosheet is a two-dimensional material with high electron mobility and with high potential for applications in catalysis and electronics. We synthesized MoS$_2$ nanosheets using a one-pot wet-chemical synthesis route with and without Re-doping. Atom probe tomography revealed that 3.8 at.% Re is homogeneously distributed within the Re-doped sheets. Other impurities are found also integrated within the material: light elements including C, N, O, and Na, locally enriched up to 0.1 at.%, as well as heavy elements such as V and W. Analysis of the non-doped sample reveals that the W and V likely originate from the Mo precursor.

Imaging of liquids and cryogenic biological materials by electron microscopy has been recently enabled by innovative approaches for specimen preparation and the fast development of optimised instruments for cryo-enabled electron microscopy (cryo-EM). Yet, Cryo-EM typically lacks advanced analytical capabilities, in particular for light elements. With the development of protocols for frozen wet specimen preparation, atom probe tomography (APT) could advantageously complement insights gained by cryo-EM. Here, we report on different approaches that have been recently proposed to enable the analysis of relatively large volumes of frozen liquids from either a flat substrate or the fractured surface of a wire. Both allowed for analysing water ice layers which are several microns thick consisting of pure water, pure heavy-water and aqueous solutions. We discuss the merits of both approaches, and prospects for further developments in this area. Preliminary results raise numerous questions, in part concerning the physics underpinning field evaporation. Transmission electron microscopy has undergone a revolution in recent years with the possibility to perform routine cryo-imaging of biological materials and (bio)chemical systems, as well as the possibility to image liquids via dedicated reaction cells or graphene-sandwiching. These approaches however typically require imaging a large number of specimens and reconstructing an average representation and often lack analytical capabilities. Here, using atom probe tomography we provide atom-by-atom analyses of frozen liquids and analytical sub-nanometre three dimensional reconstructions. The analyzed ice is in contact with, and embedded within, nanoporous gold (NPG). We report the first such data on 2-3 microns thick layers of ice formed from both high purity deuterated water and a solution of 50mM NaCl in high purity deuterated water. We present a specimen preparation strategy that uses a NPG film and, additionally, we report on an analysis of the interface between nanoporous gold and frozen salt water solution with an apparent trend in the Na and Cl concentrations across the interface. We explore a range of experimental parameters to show that the atom probe analyses of bulk aqueous specimens come with their own special challenges and discuss physical processes that may produce the observed phenomena. Our study demonstrates the viability of using frozen water as a carrier for near-atomic scale analysis of objects in solution by atom probe tomography.

Intelligent agents need to understand the surrounding environment to provide meaningful services to or interact intelligently with humans. The agents should perceive geometric features as well as semantic entities inherent in the environment. Contemporary methods in general provide one type of information regarding the environment at a time, making it difficult to conduct high-level tasks. Moreover, running two types of methods and associating two resultant information requires a lot of computation and complicates the software architecture. To overcome these limitations, we propose a neural architecture that simultaneously performs both geometric and semantic tasks in a single thread: simultaneous visual odometry, object detection, and instance segmentation (SimVODIS). Training SimVODIS requires unlabeled video sequences and the photometric consistency between input image frames generates self-supervision signals. The performance of SimVODIS outperforms or matches the state-of-the-art performance in pose estimation, depth map prediction, object detection, and instance segmentation tasks while completing all the tasks in a single thread. We expect SimVODIS would enhance the autonomy of intelligent agents and let the agents provide effective services to humans., Comment: Submitted to TPAMI
