Abstract

Binary memristive crossbars have gained huge attention as an energy-efficient deep learning hardware accelerator. Nonetheless, they suffer from various noises due to the analog nature of the crossbars. To overcome such limitations, most previous works train weight parameters with noise data obtained from a crossbar. These methods are, however, ineffective because it is difficult to collect noise data in large-volume manufacturing environment where each crossbar has a large device/circuit level variation. Moreover, we argue that there is still room for improvement even though these methods somewhat improve accuracy. This paper explores a new perspective on mitigating crossbar noise in a more generalized way by manipulating input binary bit encoding rather than training the weight of networks with respect to noise data. We first mathematically show that the noise decreases as the number of binary bit encoding pulses increases when representing the same amount of information. In addition, we propose Gradient-based Bit Encoding Optimization (GBO) which optimizes a different number of pulses at each layer, based on our in-depth analysis that each layer has a different level of noise sensitivity. The proposed heterogeneous layer-wise bit encoding scheme achieves high noise robustness with low computational cost. Abstract

This paper presents microwatt end-to-end neural signal processing hardware for deployment-stage real-time upper-limb movement intent decoding. This module features intercellular spike detection, sorting, and decoding operations for a 96-channel prosthetic implant. We design the algorithms for those operations to achieve minimal computation complexity while matching or advancing the accuracy of state-of-art Brain-Computer-Interface sorting and movement decoding. Based on those algorithms, we devise the architect of the neural signal processing hardware with the focus on hardware reuse and event-driven operation. The design achieves among the highest levels of integration, reducing wireless data rate by more than four orders of magnitude. The chip prototype in a 180-nm high-VTH, achieving the lowest power dissipation of 0.61 uW for 96 channels, 21X lower than the prior art at a comparable/better accuracy even with integration of kinematic state estimation computation.

19. Questioning Unquestioned Habits of Mind: How Executives Learn New Approaches to Familiar Situations Through Transformative Learning.

Abstract

This study explores how affective and cognitive experiences in an executive MBA (EMBA) course facilitate executives' transformative learning. Using data collected from in-depth interviews with 35 executive learners who took a transformative learning-oriented course, we found four affective experiences—feeling respected, safe, excited, and energized—interacting with two cognitive processes—self-learning and peer learning—culminating in transformation-inducing momentum. This momentum involved cognitively realizing the limits of their habit of mind and feeling ashamed by its limits yet feeling courageous about transforming it. The theoretical model derived from this inductive study demonstrates how executives can resolve the dilemma of transforming their habits of mind when an educator provides an arena in which they can learn about others' varying habits of mind, critically reflect on their own habit of mind, and develop the shame and courage to challenge it. Executives who reached this transformation-inducing momentum interpreted familiar situations with a different habit of mind or enacted a new habit of mind. The findings on the interplay of cognitive and affective experiences leading to these accomplishments of transformative learning contribute to management learning and education literature by illuminating the role of affect in the transformative-learning building process. 본 연구는 EMBA 수업에서 감정 경험 및 인지 경험이 경영자들의 변혁적 학습을 어떠한 과정을 통해 촉진하는지를 탐구한다. 변혁적 학습에 초점을 둔 교육과정을 수강한 경영자 35명과의 심층 인터뷰를 통해 수집한 데이터를 바탕으로, 네 가지 감정 경험(존경받는, 안전한, 흥분된, 활기찬 감정)과 자기 학습과 동료 학습의 두 가지 인지적 과정이 상호작용하여 변혁 촉진 동력에 도달함을 발견했다. 변혁 촉진 동력이란 인지적으로 자신의 사고습관의 한계를 깨닫고 그 한계에 대한 부끄러움을 느끼며 동시에 사고습관을 변형할 용기를 가지게 되는 상태이다. 본 귀납적 연구에서 도출된 이론적 모델은 학습자가 동료들의 다양한 사고습관에 대해 배우고 자신의 사고습관에 대해 비판적으로 성찰하며 부끄러움과 용기를 갖출 수 있는 학습의 장을 교육자가 제공할 때, 경영자들이 자신의 사고습관을 변형할 수 있음을 보여준다. 이러한 변혁 촉진 동력에 도달한 경영자들은 익숙한 상황을 다른 사고의 틀로 해석하고 새롭게 습득한 사고습관을 적용함으로써 문제를 해결했다. 인지 및 감정 경험이 서로 상호작용하면서 변혁적 학습의 성취에 이르는 과정을 밝혀낸 본 연구 결과는 경영교육과 변혁적 학습 형성 과정에서 감정의 역할에 대해 규명하는 이론적 기여를 한다. Abstract

This study examines how family values in a firm can impact non‐market strategies. Given that family members on the board tend to pursue non‐economic, especially family related, values, we attempt to specify how the perspectives, values, and tastes of family members serving on the board can be infused into the firm's environmental performance. Since actions addressing environmental issues are less directly related to family values than other types of CSR actions, such as donations and services to the local community, the family‐value‐infused characteristics of boards that represent family firms' pursuit of socio‐emotional wealth, can make firms less committed to environmental issues. Using our comprehensive sample of large U.S. firms consisting of 15,086 firm‐year observations between 1998 and 2016, we find that when family values are treated as a critical factor for non‐market strategies, family dominated firms are less likely to pursue corporate environmental responsibility. We also find that both external and internal factors can positively moderate the family firm's environmental underperformance by diluting the family values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
