25. Abdominal Wall Hernias Following High-intensity Focused Ultrasound Therapy: Three Case Reports.

Abstract

Although many studies reported the safety and efficacy of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) therapy, there are still worries about internal organ injury. However, reports of abdominal wall hernias after HIFU therapy are rare. We present three cases of abdominal wall hernias without skin injury after HIFU therapy in uterine adenomyosis or fibroids. The diagnosis was often delayed because of vague symptoms, inadequate clinical suspicion, and delayed proper image studies. Abdominal wall hernia should be recognized as a possible complication after HIFU and be suspected when the patient presents with unordinary abdominal swelling and/or pain that lasts for more than a few months after the procedure. 33. The Rise and Fall of Individually Guided Education, 1969-1979.

Abstract

Individually Guided Education (IGE) is an alternative to the traditional age-graded form of elementary schooling. In a typical IGE school, the principal shares her/his authority with leaders of units in decision-making domains and reaches decision by consensus. The leader of a unit in turn shares his/her authority with unit teachers in making decisions. The purpose of this study was to explore the change process and change contents in the phases of mobilization, implementation, and institutionalization of IGE. Because of the entrenchment of the present-day graded system, implementation of IGE is rarely done as originally intended because of the different educational backgrounds, conceptions, and traditional forms and practices held by teachers and students. Reformers need to expect that any original plan will be interpreted, modified, and used in accordance with the professional cultures and ideologies extant within and asserted through institutions. To increase the possibility of institutionalizing a large reform program like IGE, staff teachers need to be involved in the decision-making process; administrators need to be aware of teachers' attitudes toward change; and adequate facilities, materials, and financial assistance need to be arranged for. Once institutionalized, IGE should receive follow-up support. (Contains 54 references.) (RT)

34. The Great Refusal: Curriculum Transitions--The Seventies.

Abstract

This paper offers a history of curriculum research. It discusses how, by 1969, the conventional curriculum field in America had become irrelevant. This situation would change in the 1970s as curriculum research began its climb back toward legitimacy. During the decade, a new trend in synoptic curriculum efforts appeared--a more considered approach to delineating curriculum studies while attempting to situate the field in a historical context. This period also marked the rise of special-interest groups in curriculum studies, a development that allowed for the sharing of diverse ideas. Curriculum studies enjoyed new-found growth as curriculum theorizing hit its stride, borrowing heavily from schools of thought like European critical and neo-Marxist thinking, depth psychology, and feminist theory rather than the standard areas of developmental, humanistic, and cognitive psychology. To this dynamism was added the contributions of non-U.S curriculum scholars, many of whom explored curriculum and schooling from new vantage points. This influx was coupled with a renewed emphasis on the history of the curriculum field, which, in part, led to a revolt against scientism and rationality and prompted a shift from curriculum as a deductive science to curriculum as a practical art requiring negotiation, judgment, and reasoning.
