Excitons in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have emerged as a promising platform for novel applications ranging from optoelectronic devices to quantum optics and solid state quantum simulators. While much progress has been made towards characterizing and controlling excitons in TMDs, manipulating their properties during the course of their lifetime - a key requirement for many optoelectronic device and information processing modalities - remains an outstanding challenge. Here we combine long-lived interlayer excitons in angle-aligned MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ heterostructures with fast electrical control to realize dynamical control schemes, in which exciton properties are not predetermined at the time of excitation but can be dynamically manipulated during their lifetime. Leveraging the out-of-plane exciton dipole moment, we use electric fields to demonstrate dynamical control over the exciton emission wavelength. Moreover, employing a patterned gate geometry, we demonstrate rapid local sample doping and toggling of the radiative decay rate through exciton-charge interactions during the exciton lifetime. Spatially mapping the exciton response reveals charge redistribution, offering a novel probe of electronic transport in twisted TMD heterostructures. Plasmon polaritons are formed by coupling light with delocalized electrons. The half-light and half-matter nature of plasmon polaritons endows them with unparalleled tunability via a range of parameters, such as dielectric environments and carrier density. Therefore, plasmon polaritons are expected to be tuned when in proximity to polar materials since the carrier density is tuned by an electrostatic potential; conversely, the plasmon polariton response might enable the sensing of polarization. Here, we use infrared nano-imaging and nano-photocurrent measurements to investigate heterostructures composed of graphene and twisted hexagonal boron nitride (t-BN), with alternating polarization in a triangular network of moir\'e stacking domains. We observe that the carrier density and the corresponding plasmonic response of graphene are modulated by polar domains in t-BN. In addition, we demonstrate that the nanometer-wide domain walls of graphene moir\'es superlattices, created by the polar domains of t-BN, provide momenta to assist the plasmonic excitations. Furthermore, our studies establish that the plasmon of graphene could function as a delicate sensor for polarization textures. The evolution of polarization textures in t-BN under uniform electric fields is tomographically examined via plasmonic imaging. Strikingly, no noticeable polarization switching is observed under applied electric fields up to 0.23 V/nm, at variance with transport reports. Our nano-images unambiguously reveal that t-BN with triangular domains acts like a ferrielectric, rather than ferroelectric claimed by many previous studies., Comment: 41 pages, 20 figures

Hydrodynamic transport effectively describes the collective dynamics of fluids with well-defined thermodynamic quantities. With enhanced electron-electron interactions at elevated temperatures, the collective behavior of electrons in graphene with minimal impurities can be depicted as a hydrodynamic flow of charges. In this new regime, the well-known rules of Ohmic transport based on a single electron picture no longer apply, necessitating the consideration of collective electron dynamics. In particular, the hydrodynamic analogues of Joule heating and thermal transport require consideration of the viscous motion of the electron fluid, which has a direct impact on energy dissipation and heat generation by the fluidic motion of charge. In this work, we probe graphene hydrodynamics with thermal transport and find two distinct, qualitative signatures: thermal conductivity suppression below the Wiedemann-Franz value and viscous heating leading to magnetically-induced redistribution of temperature. We find these two effects are coincident in temperature and density, providing robust qualitative signatures of hydrodynamics, despite arising from two distinct aspects of this new regime: microscopic momentum conservation due to electron-electron scattering, and geometry-dependent viscous dissipation. Our results mark the first observation of viscous electronic heating in an electron fluid, providing insight for thermal management in electronic hydrodynamic devices and offering a new methodology for identifying hydrodynamic states in other systems., Comment: 36 pages, 9 figures, including supplementary information

The robustness of the macroscopic quantum nature of a superconductor can be characterized by the superfluid stiffness, $\rho_s$, a quantity that describes the energy required to vary the phase of the macroscopic quantum wave function. In unconventional superconductors, such as cuprates, the low-temperature behavior of $\rho_s$ drastically differs from that of conventional superconductors due to quasiparticle excitations from gapless points (nodes) in momentum space. Intensive research on the recently discovered magic-angle twisted graphene family has revealed, in addition to superconducting states, strongly correlated electronic states associated with spontaneously broken symmetries, inviting the study of $\rho_s$ to uncover the potentially unconventional nature of its superconductivity. Here we report the measurement of $\rho_s$ in magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene (TTG), revealing unconventional nodal-gap superconductivity. Utilizing radio-frequency reflectometry techniques to measure the kinetic inductive response of superconducting TTG coupled to a microwave resonator, we find a linear temperature dependence of $\rho_s$ at low temperatures and nonlinear Meissner effects in the current bias dependence, both indicating nodal structures in the superconducting order parameter. Furthermore, the doping dependence shows a linear correlation between the zero temperature $\rho_s$ and the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$, reminiscent of Uemura's relation in cuprates, suggesting phase-coherence-limited superconductivity. Our results provide strong evidence for nodal superconductivity in TTG and put strong constraints on the mechanisms of these graphene-based superconductors.

The negatively charged boron vacancy ($\mathrm{V}_{\mathrm{B}}^-$) in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) has garnered significant attention among defects in two-dimensional materials. This owes, in part, to its deterministic generation, well-characterized atomic structure, and optical polarizability at room temperature. We investigate the latter through extensive measurements probing both the ground and excited state polarization dynamics. We develop a semiclassical model based on these measurements that predicts a near-unity degree of spin polarization, surpassing other solid-state spin defects under ambient conditions. Building upon our model, we include the presence of nuclear spin degrees of freedom adjacent to the $\mathrm{V}_{\mathrm{B}}^-$ and perform a comprehensive set of Lindbladian numerics to investigate the hyperfine-induced polarization of the nuclear spins. Our simulations predict a number of important features that emerge as a function of magnetic field which are borne out by experiment.

Atomically thin van der Waals (vdW) films provide a novel material platform for epitaxial growth of quantum heterostructures. However, unlike the remote epitaxial growth of three-dimensional bulk crystals, the growth of two-dimensional (2D) material heterostructures across atomic layers has been limited due to the weak vdW interaction. Here, we report the double-sided epitaxy of vdW layered materials through atomic membranes. We grow vdW topological insulators (TIs) Sb$_2$Te$_3$ and Bi$_2$Se$_3$ by molecular beam epitaxy on both surfaces of atomically thin graphene or hBN, which serve as suspended 2D vdW "$\textit{substrate}$" layers. Both homo- and hetero- double-sided vdW TI tunnel junctions are fabricated, with the atomically thin hBN acting as a crystal-momentum-conserving tunnelling barrier with abrupt and epitaxial interface. By performing field-angle dependent magneto-tunnelling spectroscopy on these devices, we reveal the energy-momentum-spin resonant tunnelling of massless Dirac electrons between helical Landau levels developed in the topological surface states at the interface., Comment: 24 pages, 4 main figures, 7 extended data figures

The search for anyons, quasiparticles with fractional charge and exotic exchange statistics, has inspired decades of condensed matter research. Quantum Hall interferometers enable direct observation of the anyon braiding phase via discrete interference phase jumps when the quasiparticle number changes. Here, we observe the universal anyonic braiding phase in both the $\nu = 1/3$ and $4/3$ fractional quantum Hall states by probing three-state random telegraph noise (RTN) in real-time. We find that the observed RTN stems from anyon quasiparticle number $n$ fluctuations and reconstruct three Aharonov-Bohm oscillation signals phase shifted by $2\pi/3$, corresponding to the three possible interference branches from braiding around $n$ (mod 3) anyons. Hence, we fully characterize the anyon exchange statistics using new methods that can readily extend to non-abelian states., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures

Imposing incommensurable periodicity on the periodic atomic lattice can lead to complex structural phases consisting of locally periodic structure bounded by topological defects. Twisted trilayer graphene (TTG) is an ideal material platform to study the interplay between different atomic periodicities, which can be tuned by twist angles between the layers, leading to moir\'e-of-moir\'e lattices. Interlayer and intralayer interactions between two interfaces in TTG transform this moir\'e-of-moir\'e lattice into an intricate network of domain structures at small twist angles, which can harbor exotic electronic behaviors. Here we report a complete structural phase diagram of TTG with atomic scale lattice reconstruction. Using transmission electron microscopy combined with a new interatomic potential simulation, we show that a cornucopia of large-scale moir\'e lattices, ranging from triangular, kagome, and a corner-shared hexagram-shaped domain pattern, are present. For small twist angles below 0.1{\deg}, all domains are bounded by a network of two-dimensional domain wall lattices. In particular, in the limit of small twist angles, the competition between interlayer stacking energy and the formation of discommensurate domain walls leads to unique spontaneous symmetry breaking structures with nematic orders, suggesting the pivotal role of long-range interactions across entire layers. The diverse tessellation of distinct domains, whose topological network can be tuned by the adjustment of the twist angles, establishes TTG as a platform for exploring the interplay between emerging quantum properties and controllable nontrivial lattices.

Disorder at the etched edges of graphene quantum dots (GQD) enables random all-to-all interactions between localized charges in partially-filled Landau levels, providing a potential platform to realize the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. We use quantum Hall edge states in the graphene electrodes to measure electrical conductance and thermoelectric power across the GQD. We observe a rapid diminishing of electric conductance fluctuations and slowly decreasing thermoelectric power across the GQD with increasing temperature, consistent with recent theoretical predictions for the SYK regime., Comment: 6 pages, 4 main figures; supplement has 24 pages, 10 figures

Electronic interferometers using the chiral, one-dimensional (1D) edge channels of the quantum Hall effect (QHE) can demonstrate a wealth of fundamental phenomena. The recent observation of phase jumps in a Fabry-P\'erot (FP) interferometer revealed anyonic quasiparticle exchange statistics in the fractional QHE. When multiple integer edge channels are involved, FP interferometers have exhibited anomalous Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interference frequency doubling, suggesting putative pairing of electrons into 2e quasiparticles. Here, we use a highly tunable graphene-based QHE FP interferometer to observe the connection between interference phase jumps and AB frequency doubling, unveiling how strong repulsive interaction between edge channels leads to the apparent pairing phenomena. By tuning electron density in-situ from filling factor {\nu}<2 to {\nu}>7, we tune the interaction strength and observe periodic interference phase jumps leading to AB frequency doubling. Our observations demonstrate that the combination of repulsive interaction between the spin-split {\nu}=2 edge channels and charge quantization is sufficient to explain the frequency doubling, through a near-perfect charge screening between the localized and extended edge channels. Our results show that interferometers are sensitive probes of microscopic interactions and enable future experiments studying correlated electrons in 1D channels using our highly tunable platform., Comment: 26 pages, 13 figures

Strongly interacting electronic systems possess rich phase diagrams resulting from the competition between different quantum ground states. A general mechanism that relieves this frustration is the emergence of microemulsion phases, where regions of different phase self-organize across multiple length scales. The experimental characterization of these phases often poses significant challenges, as the long-range Coulomb interaction microscopically mingles the competing states. Here, we use cryogenic reflectance and magneto-optical spectroscopy to observe the signatures of the mixed state between an electronic Wigner crystal and an electron liquid in a MoSe2 monolayer. We find that the transit into this 'microemulsion' state is marked by anomalies in exciton reflectance, spin susceptibility, and Umklapp scattering, establishing it as a distinct phase of electronic matter. Our study of the two-dimensional electronic microemulsion phase elucidates the physics of novel correlated electron states with strong Coulomb interactions.

Atomically thin semiconductor heterostructures provide a two-dimensional (2D) device platform for creating high densities of cold, controllable excitons. Interlayer excitons (IEs), bound electrons and holes localized to separate 2D quantum well layers, have permanent out-of-plane dipole moments and long lifetimes, allowing their spatial distribution to be tuned on demand. Here, we employ electrostatic gates to trap IEs and control their density. By electrically modulating the IE Stark shift, electron-hole pair concentrations above $2\times10^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$ can be achieved. At this high IE density, we observe an exponentially increasing linewidth broadening indicative of an IE ionization transition, independent of the trap depth. This runaway threshold remains constant at low temperatures, but increases above 20 K, consistent with the quantum dissociation of a degenerate IE gas. Artificial Kitaev chains can be used to engineer Majorana bound states (MBSs) in superconductor-semiconductor hybrids. In this work, we realize a two-site Kitaev chain in a two-dimensional electrongas by coupling two quantum dots through a region proximitized by a superconductor. We demonstrate systematic control over inter-dot couplings through in-plane rotations of the magnetic field and via electrostatic gating of the proximitized region. This allows us to tune the system to sweet spots in parameter space, where robust correlated zero bias conductance peaks are observed in tunnelling spectroscopy. To study the extent of hybridization between localized MBSs, we probe the evolution of the energy spectrum with magnetic field and estimate the Majorana polarization, an important metric for Majorana-based qubits. The implementation of a Kitaev chain on a scalable and flexible 2D platform provides a realistic path towards more advanced experiments that require manipulation and readout of multiple MBSs., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures. Employing flux-grown single crystal WSe$_2$, we report charge carrier scattering behaviors measured in $h$-BN encapsulated monolayer field effect transistors. We perform quantum transport measurements across various hole densities and temperatures and observe a non-monotonic change of transport mobility $\mu$ as a function of hole density in the degenerately doped sample. This unusual behavior can be explained by energy dependent scattering amplitude of strong defects calculated using the T-matrix approximation. Utilizing long mean-free path ($>$500 nm), we demonstrate the high quality of our electronic devices by showing quantized conductance steps from an electrostatically-defined quantum point contact. We model an interacting quantum dot of electrons by a Hamiltonian with random and all-to-all single particle hopping (of r.m.s. strength $t$) and two-particle interactions (of r.m.s. strength $J$). For $t \ll J$, such a model has a regime exhibiting the non-quasiparticle physics of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model at temperatures $E_{\rm coh} \ll T \ll J$, and that of a renormalized Fermi liquid at $T \ll E_{\rm coh}$, where $E_{\rm coh} = t^2 / J$. Extending earlier work has computed the mean thermoelectric properties of such a dot weakly coupled to two external leads, we compute the sample-to-sample fluctuations in the conductance and thermopower of such a dot, and describe several distinct regimes. In all cases, the effect of the SYK interactions is to reduce the strength of the sample-to-sample fluctuations. We also find that in the regime where the mean transport co-efficients are determined only by the value of $J$ at leading order, the sample-to-sample fluctuations can be controlled by the influence of the smaller $t$., Comment: 39 pages, 11 figures

Moire patterns result from setting a 2D material such as graphene on another 2D material with a small twist angle or from the lattice mismatch of 2D heterostructures. We present a continuum model for the elastic energy of these bilayer moire structures that includes an intralayer elastic energy and an interlayer misfit energy that is minimized at two stackings (disregistries). We show by theory and computation that the displacement field that minimizes the global elastic energy subject to a global boundary constraint gives large alternating regions of one of the two energy-minimizing stackings separated by domain walls. We derive a model for the domain wall structure from the continuum bilayer energy and give a rigorous asymptotic estimate for the structure. We also give an improved estimate for the L2-norm of the gradient on the moire unit cell for twisted bilayers that scales at most inversely linearly with the twist angle, a result which is consistent with the formation of one-dimensional domain walls with a fixed width around triangular domains at very small twist angles., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures

We present a general method to analyze the topological nature of the domain boundary connectivity that appeared in relaxed moir\'e superlattice patterns at the interface of 2-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials. At large enough moir\'e lengths, all moir\'e systems relax into commensurated 2D domains separated by networks of dislocation lines. The nodes of the 2D dislocation line network can be considered as vortex-like topological defects. We find that a simple analogy to common topological systems with an $S^1$ order parameter, such as a superconductor or planar ferromagnet, cannot correctly capture the topological nature of these defects. For example, in twisted bilayer graphene, the order parameter space for the relaxed moir\'e system is homotopy equivalent to a punctured torus. Here, the nodes of the 2D dislocation network can be characterized as elements of the fundamental group of the punctured torus, the free group on two generators, endowing these network nodes with non-Abelian properties. Extending this analysis to consider moir\'e patterns generated from any relative strain, we find that antivortices occur in the presence of anisotropic heterostrain, such as shear or anisotropic expansion, while arrays of vortices appear under twist or isotropic expansion between vdW materials. Experimentally, utilizing the dark field imaging capability of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we demonstrate the existence of vortex and antivortex pair formation in a moir\'e system, caused by competition between different types of heterostrains in the vdW interfaces. We also present a methodology for mapping the underlying heterostrain of a moir\'e structure from experimental TEM data, which provides a quantitative relation between the various components of heterostrain and vortex-antivortex density in moir\'e systems., Comment: 15 pages with 11 figures

Twisted 2D materials form complex moir\'e structures that spontaneously reduce symmetry through picoscale deformation within a mesoscale lattice. We show twisted 2D materials contain a torsional displacement field comprised of three transverse periodic lattice distortions (PLD). The torsional PLD amplitude provides a single order parameter that concisely describes the structural complexity of twisted bilayer moir\'es. Moreover, the structure and amplitude of a torsional periodic lattice distortion is quantifiable using rudimentary electron diffraction methods sensitive to reciprocal space. In twisted bilayer graphene, the torsional PLD begins to form at angles below 3.89{\deg} and the amplitude reaches 8 pm around the magic angle of 1.1{\deg}. At extremely low twist angles (e.g. below 0.25{\deg}) the amplitude increases and additional PLD harmonics arise to expand Bernal stacked domains separated by well defined solitonic boundaries. The torsional distortion field in twisted bilayer graphene is analytically described and has an upper bound of 22.6 pm. Similar torsional distortions are observed in twisted WS$_2$, CrI$_3$, and WSe$_2$ / MoSe$_2$.

Protein design is a technique to engineer proteins by modifying their sequence to obtain novel functionalities. In this method, amino acids in the sequence are permutated to find the low energy states satisfying the configuration. However, exploring all possible combinations of amino acids is generally impossible to achieve on conventional computers due to the exponential growth of possibilities with the number of designable sites. Thus, sampling methods are currently used as a conventional approach to address the protein design problems. Recently, quantum computation methods have shown the potential to solve similar types of problems. In the present work, we use the general idea of Grover's algorithm, a pure quantum computation method, to design circuits at the gate-based level and address the protein design problem. In our quantum algorithms, we use custom pair-wise energy tables consisting of eight different amino acids. Also, the distance reciprocals between designable sites are included in calculating energies in the circuits. Due to the noisy state of current quantum computers, we mainly use quantum computer simulators for this study. However, a very simple version of our circuits is implemented on real quantum devices to examine their capabilities to run these algorithms. Our results show that using $\mathcal{O}(\sqrt N)$ iterations, the circuits find the correct results among all $N$ possibilities, providing the expected quadratic speed up of Grover's algorithm over classical methods.

Techniques to mold the flow of light on subwavelength scales enable fundamentally new optical systems and device applications. The realization of programmable, active optical systems with fast, tunable components is among the outstanding challenges in the field. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a few-pixel beam steering device based on electrostatic gate control of excitons in an atomically thin semiconductor with strong light-matter interactions. By combining the high reflectivity of a MoSe2 monolayer with a graphene split-gate geometry, we shape the wavefront phase profile to achieve continuously tunable beam deflection with a range of 10$^\circ$, two-dimensional beam steering, and switching times down to 1.6 nanoseconds. Our approach opens the door for a new class of atomically thin optical systems, such as rapidly switchable beam arrays and quantum metasurfaces operating at their fundamental thickness limit.

Deep learning approaches have produced substantial breakthroughs in fields such as image classification and natural language processing and are making rapid inroads in the area of protein design. Many generative models of proteins have been developed that encompass all known protein sequences, model specific protein families, or extrapolate the dynamics of individual proteins. Those generative models can learn protein representations that are often more informative of protein structure and function than hand-engineered features. Furthermore, they can be used to quickly propose millions of novel proteins that resemble the native counterparts in terms of expression level, stability, or other attributes. The protein design process can further be guided by discriminative oracles to select candidates with the highest probability of having the desired properties. In this review, we discuss five classes of generative models that have been most successful at modeling proteins and provide a framework for model guided protein design.

Motivated by the recent proposals for unconventional emergent physics in twisted bilayers of nodal superconductors, we study the peculiarities of the Josephson effect at the twisted interface between $d$-wave superconductors. We demonstrate that for clean interfaces with a twist angle $\theta_0$ in the range $0^\circ<\theta_0<45^\circ$ the critical current can exhibit nonmonotonic temperature dependence with a maximum at a nonzero temperature as well as a complex dependence on the twist angle at low temperatures. The former is shown to arise quite generically due to the contributions of the momenta around the gap nodes, which are negative for nonzero twist angles. It is demonstrated that these features reflect the geometry of the Fermi surface and are sensitive to the form of the momentum dependence of the tunneling at the twisted interface. Close to $\theta_0=45^\circ$ we find that the critical current does not vanish due to Cooper pair cotunneling, which leads to a transition to a time-reversal breaking topological superconducting $d+id$ phase. Weak interface roughness, quasiperiodicity, and inhomogeneity broaden the momentum dependence of the interlayer tunneling leading to a critical current $I_c\sim \cos(2\theta_0)$ with $\cos(6\theta_0)$ corrections. Furthermore, strong disorder at the interface is demonstrated to suppress the time-reversal breaking superconducting phase near $\theta_0=45^\circ$. Last, we provide a comprehensive theoretical analysis of experiments that can reveal the full current-phase relation for twisted superconductors close to $\theta_0=45^\circ$. In particular, we demonstrate the emergence of the Fraunhofer interference pattern near $\theta_0=45^\circ$, while accounting for realistic sample geometries, and show that its temperature dependence can yield unambiguous evidence of Cooper pair cotunneling, necessary for topological superconductivity.

Twisted interfaces between stacked van der Waals cuprate crystals enable tunable Josephson coupling between in-plane anisotropic superconducting order parameters. Employing a novel cryogenic assembly technique, we fabricate Josephson junctions with an atomically sharp twisted interface between Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x crystals. The Josephson critical current density sensitively depends on the twist angle, reaching the maximum value comparable to that of the intrinsic junctions at small twisting angles, and is suppressed by almost 2 orders of magnitude yet remains finite close to 45 degree twist angle. Through the observation of fractional Shapiro steps and the analysis of Fraunhofer patterns we show that the remaining superconducting coherence near 45 degree is due to the co-tunneling of Cooper pairs, a necessary ingredient for high-temperature topological superconductivity.

We have measured Coulomb drag between an individual single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) as a one-dimensional (1D) conductor and the two-dimensional (2D) conductor monolayer graphene, separated by a few-atom-thick boron nitride layer. The graphene carrier density is tuned across the charge neutrality point (CNP) by a gate, while the SWNT remains degenerate. At high temperatures, the drag resistance changes sign across the CNP, as expected for momentum transfer from drive to drag layer, and exhibits layer exchange Onsager reciprocity. We find that layer reciprocity is broken near the graphene CNP at low temperatures due to nonlinear drag response associated with temperature dependent drag and thermoelectric effects. The drag resistance shows power-law dependences on temperature and carrier density characteristic of 1D Fermi liquid-2D Dirac fluid drag. The 2D drag signal at high temperatures decays with distance from the 1D source slower than expected for a diffusive current distribution, suggesting additional interaction effects in the graphene in the hydrodynamic transport regime., Comment: 27 pages, 20 figures (including supplemental material)

In low-dimensional systems, the combination of reduced dimensionality, strong interactions, and topology has led to a growing number of many-body quantum phenomena. Thermal transport, which is sensitive to all energy-carrying degrees of freedom, provides a discriminating probe of emergent excitations in quantum materials and devices. However, thermal transport measurements in low dimensions are dominated by the phonon contribution of the lattice, requiring an experimental approach to isolate the electronic thermal conductance. Here, we show how the measurement of nonlocal voltage fluctuations in a multiterminal device can reveal the electronic heat transported across a mesoscopic bridge made of low-dimensional materials. By using 2-dimensional graphene as a noise thermometer, we demonstrate quantitative electronic thermal conductance measurements of graphene and carbon nanotubes up to 70 K, achieving a precision of ~1% of the thermal conductance quantum at 5 K. Employing linear and nonlinear thermal transport, we observe signatures of long-range interaction-mediated energy transport in 1-dimensional electron systems, in agreement with a theoretical model. In fermionic systems, superconductivity and superfluidity are enabled through the condensation of fermion pairs. The nature of this condensate can be tuned by varying the pairing strength, with weak coupling yielding a BCS-like condensate and strong coupling resulting in a BEC-like process. However, demonstration of this cross-over has remained elusive in electronic systems. Here we study graphene double-layers separated by an atomically thin insulator. Under applied magnetic field, electrons and holes couple across the barrier to form bound magneto-excitons whose pairing strength can be continuously tuned by varying the effective layer separation. Using temperature-dependent Coulomb drag and counter-flow current measurements, we demonstrate the capability to tune the magneto-exciton condensate through the entire weak-coupling to strong-coupling phase diagram. Excitons are composite bosons that can feature spin singlet and triplet states. In usual semiconductors, without an additional spin-flip mechanism, triplet excitons are extremely inefficient optical emitters. Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), with their large spin-orbit coupling, have been of special interest for valleytronic applications for their coupling of circularly polarized light to excitons with selective valley and spin$^{1-4}$. In atomically thin MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ TMD van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures, the unique atomic registry of vdW layers provides a quasi-angular momentum to interlayer excitons$^{5,6}$, enabling emission from otherwise dark spin triplet excitons. Here, we report electrically tunable spin singlet and triplet exciton emission from atomically aligned TMD heterostructures. We confirm the spin configurations of the light-emitting excitons employing magnetic fields to measure effective exciton g-factors. The interlayer tunneling current across the TMD vdW heterostructure enables the electrical generation of singlet and triplet exciton emission in this atomically thin PN junction. We demonstrate electrically tunability between the singlet and triplet excitons that are generated by charge injection. We construct a van der Waals heterostructure consisting of three graphene layers stacked with alternating twisting angles $\pm\theta$. At the average twist angle $\theta\sim 1.56^{\circ}$, a theoretically predicted magic angle for the formation of flat electron bands, narrow conduction and valence moir\'e bands appear together with a linearly dispersing Dirac band. Upon doping the half-filled moir\'e valence band with holes, or the half-filled moir\'e conduction band with electrons, displacement field tunable superconductivity emerges, reaching a maximum critical temperature of 2.1 K at optimal doping and displacement field. By tuning the doping level and displacement fields, we find that superconducting regimes occur in conjunction with flavour polarization of moir\'e bands bounded by a van Hove singularity (vHS) at high displacement fields. This experimental observation is found to be inconsistent with a weak coupling description, suggesting that the observed moir\'e superconductivity has an unconventional nature., Comment: 35 pages, 14 figures. Graphene-based heterostructures display a variety of phenomena that are strongly tunable by electrostatic local gates. Monolayer graphene (MLG) exhibits tunable surface plasmon polaritons, as revealed by scanning nano-infrared experiments. In bilayer graphene (BLG), an electronic gap is induced by a perpendicular displacement field. Gapped BLG is predicted to display unusual effects such as plasmon amplification and domain wall plasmons with significantly larger lifetime than MLG. Furthermore, a variety of correlated electronic phases highly sensitive to displacement fields have been observed in twisted graphene structures. However, applying perpendicular displacement fields in nano-infrared experiments has only recently become possible (Ref. 1). In this work, we fully characterize two approaches to realizing nano-optics compatible top-gates: bilayer $\text{MoS}_2$ and MLG. We perform nano-infrared imaging on both types of structures and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. Our work paves the way for comprehensive near-field experiments of correlated phenomena and plasmonic effects in graphene-based heterostructures.

Josephson junctions (JJs) are ubiquitous superconducting devices, enabling high sensitivity magnetometers and voltage amplifiers, as well as forming the basis of high performance cryogenic computer and superconducting quantum computers. While JJ performance can be degraded by quasiparticles (QPs) formed from broken Cooper pairs, this phenomenon also opens opportunities to sensitively detect electromagnetic radiation. Here we demonstrate single near-infrared photon detection by coupling photons to the localized surface plasmons of a graphene-based JJ. Using the photon-induced switching statistics of the current-biased JJ, we reveal the critical role of QPs generated by the absorbed photon in the detection mechanism. Combining various two-dimensional materials into novel van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures has been shown to lead to new emergent quantum systems. A novel heterostructure composed of a vdW topological insulator (TI) such as Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ with a quantum spin liquid (QSL) such as $\alpha$-RuCl$_{3}$ is of great interest for the potential for the chiral Dirac electrons in the TI surface states to interact strongly with the fractionalized fermionic spin excitations in the QSL. We report the heteroepitaxial growth of Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ thin films on $\alpha$-RuCl$_{3}$ as well as the characterization of their structural and electrical properties. Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ thin films with an atomically smooth and uniform surface are grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The heterostructure exhibits a preferential epitaxial relationship corresponding to $(5 \times 5)-$Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}/(2\sqrt{3} \times 2\sqrt{3})R30\deg-\alpha$-RuCl$_{3}$ commensurate supercells with a periodicity of 1.2 nm. The formation of the superlattice despite a lattice mismatch as large as 60% is attributed to the van der Waals heteroepitaxy. Magnetotransport measurements as a function of temperature show Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ films grown on $\alpha$-RuCl$_{3}$ are heavily $n$-doped, $n_{e}$ ~10$^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$, with mobility $\mu$ ~450 cm$^{2}$ V$^{-1}$ s$^{-1}$ at low temperatures., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures; accepted in Physical Review Materials

A Wigner crystal, a regular electron lattice arising from strong correlation effects, is one of the earliest predicted collective electronic states. This many-body state exhibits quantum and classical phase transitions and has been proposed as a basis for quantum information processing applications. In semiconductor platforms, two-dimensional Wigner crystals have been observed under magnetic field or moir\'e-based lattice potential where the electron kinetic energy is strongly suppressed. Here, we report bilayer Wigner crystal formation without a magnetic or confinement field in atomically thin MoSe$_2$ bilayers separated by hexagonal boron nitride. We observe optical signatures of robust correlated insulating states formed at symmetric (1:1) and asymmetric (4:1 and 7:1) electron doping of the two MoSe$_2$ layers at cryogenic temperatures. We attribute these features to the bilayer Wigner crystals formed from two commensurate triangular electron lattices in each layer, stabilized via inter-layer interaction. These bilayer Wigner crystal phases are remarkably stable and undergo quantum and thermal melting transitions above a critical electron density of up to $6 \times10^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$ and at temperatures of ~40 K. Our results demonstrate that atomically thin semiconductors provide a promising new platform for realizing strongly correlated electronic states, probing their electronic and magnetic phase transitions, and developing novel applications in quantum electronics and optoelectronics., Comment: 4 figures
