We investigated the effect of Ni doping in a recently proposed quantum spin liquid (QSL) candidate Li$_4$CuTeO$_6$. We performed a comprehensive study on the structural and magnetic properties. We find that the anti-site disorder between Li$^+$ and Cu$^{2+}$ persists until 50\% Ni doping in which Ni and Cu occupy different crystallographic sites. As a result, while Cu sits in both triangular and honeycomb layers in Li$_4$CuTeO$_6$, Ni forms only honeycomb layer in Li$_4$NiTeO$_6$ and Li$_4$Cu$_{0.5}$Ni$_{0.5}$TeO$_6$. Our magnetic susceptibility measurements show that the Weiss temperature decreases from -145.68 K in Li$_4$CuTeO$_6$ to -6.15 K in Li$_4$NiTeO$_6$ as Ni doping increases, and find no hint of magnetic ordering or freezing down to 1.8 K. Scattered sunlight from the interplanetary dust (IPD) cloud in our Solar system presents a serious foreground challenge for spectro-photometric measurements of the Extragalactic Background Light (EBL). In this work, we report on measurements of the absolute intensity of the Zodiacal Light (ZL) using the novel technique of Fraunhofer line spectroscopy on the deepest 8542 Angstrom line of the near-infrared CaII absorption triplet. The measurements are performed with the Narrow Band Spectrometer (NBS) aboard the Cosmic Infrared Background Experiment (CIBER) sounding rocket instrument. We use the NBS data to test the accuracy of two ZL models widely cited in the literature; the Kelsall and Wright models, which have been used in foreground removal analyses that produce high and low EBL results respectively. We find a mean reduced chi squared of 3.5 for the Kelsall model and a chi squared of 2.0 for the Wright model. The best description of our data is provided by a simple modification to the Kelsall model which includes a free ZL offset parameter. This adjusted model describes the data with a reduced chi squared of 1.5 and yields an inferred offset amplitude of 46 +- 19 nW m^-2 sr^-1 extrapolated to 12500 Angstroms. These measurements elude to the potential existence of a dust cloud component in the inner Solar system whose intensity does not strongly modulate with the Earth's motion around the Sun.

$Li_{2}RuO_{3}$ with a honeycomb structure undergoes a drastic transition from a regular honeycomb lattice with the $C2/m$ space group to a valence bond solid state of the $P2_{1}/m$ space group with an extremely strong dimerization at 550 K. We synthesized $Li_{2}Ru_{1-x}Mn_{x}O_{3}$ with a full solid solution and investigated doping effects on the valence bond solid state as a function of Mn content. The valence bond solid state is found to be stable up to $x = 0.2$, based on our extensive experiments: structural studies, resistivity, and magnetic susceptibility. On the other hand, the extended x-ray absorption fine structure analyses show that the dimer local structure remains robust even above $x = 0.2$ with a minimal effect on the dimer bond length. This indicates that the locally-disordered dimer structure survives well into the Mn-rich phase even though the thermodynamically stable average structure has the $C2/m$ space group. Our results prove that the dimer formation in $Li_{2}RuO_{3}$ is predominantly a local phenomenon driven by the formation of orbitally-assisted metal-metal bonds and that these dimers are relatively robust against doping-induced disorder., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

We measure the spatial fluctuations of the Near-Infrared Extragalactic Background Light (NIREBL) from 2$^{\circ}$ to 20$^{\circ}$ in angular scale at the 1.6 and 2.2 $\mu$m using data obtained with Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS) on board the Infrared Telescope in Space (IRTS). The brightness of the NIREBL is estimated by subtracting foreground components such as zodiacal light, diffuse Galactic light, and integrated star light from the observed sky. The foreground components are estimated using well-established models and archive data. The NIREBL fluctuations for the 1.6 and 2.2 $\mu$m connect well toward the sub-degree scale measurements from previous studies. Overall, the fluctuations show a wide bump with a center at around 1$^{\circ}$ and the power decreases toward larger angular scales with nearly a single power-law spectrum (i.e. \textit{F($\sqrt{l(l+1)C_l/2\pi}$)} $\sim$ $\theta^{-1}$) indicating that the large scale power is dominated by the random spatial distribution of the sources. After examining several known sources, contributors such as normal galaxies, high redshift objects, intra-halo light, and far-IR cosmic background, we conclude that the excess fluctuation at around the 1$^{\circ}$ scale cannot be explained by any of them.

Manipulating magnetic domains is essential for many technological applications. Recent breakthroughs in Antiferromagnetic Spintronics brought up novel concepts for electronic device development. Imaging antiferromagnetic domains is of key importance to this field. Unfortunately, some of the basic domain types, such as antiphase domains, cannot be imaged by conventional techniques. Herein, we present a new domain projection imaging technique based on the localization of domain boundaries by resonant magnetic diffraction of coherent x rays. Contrast arises from reduction of the scattered intensity at the domain boundaries due to destructive interference effects. We demonstrate this approach by imaging antiphase domains in a collinear antiferromagnet Fe2Mo3O8, and observe evidence of domain wall interaction with a structural defect. This technique does not involve any numerical algorithms. It is fast, sensitive, produces large-scale images in a single-exposure measurement, and is applicable to a variety of magnetic domain types.

The practical use of nanoparticle superlattices (NPSLs) which are of great interest as materials with designed functionalities is often limited by their lack of structural stability under various utilization conditions. Here, we report a new method for directly synthesizing NPSL fully embedded in hierarchically porous silica which provides exceptional stability and efficient pathways for reactant molecules, making the NPSL highly efficient catalyst. The superlattices made of 12 nm gold nanoparticles exhibit exceptionally high catalytic activity for CO oxidation at low temperature, showing higher activity than that of small gold nanoparticles (ca. 3 nm) supported on metal oxides. The gold NPSL also shows unprecedented stability, maintaining its structural stability and catalytic activity without any signature of degradation over a month of continuous catalytic reaction, which present one significant step forward to realizing the great potentials of gold catalysts in automotive emission control and green chemistry industry., Comment: 1. The Multipurpose InfraRed Imaging System (MIRIS) performed the MIRIS Pa{\alpha} Galactic Plane Survey (MIPAPS), which covers the entire Galactic plane within the latitude range of -3{\deg} < b < +3{\deg} at Pa{\alpha} (1.87 um). We present the first result of the MIPAPS data extracted from the longitude range of l = 96.5{\deg}-116.3{\deg}, and demonstrate the data quality and scientific potential of the data by comparing them with H{\alpha} maps obtained from the INT Photometric H{\alpha} Survey (IPHAS) data. We newly identify 90 H II region candidates in the WISE H II region catalog as definite H II regions by detecting the Pa{\alpha} and/or H{\alpha} recombination lines, out of which 53 H II regions are detected at Pa{\alpha}. We also report the detection of additional 29 extended and 18 point-like sources at Pa{\alpha}. We estimate the E(B-V) color excesses and the total Lyman continuum luminosities for H II regions by combining the MIPAPS Pa{\alpha} and IPHAS H{\alpha} fluxes. The E(B-V) values are found to be systematically lower than those estimated from point stars associated with H II regions. Utilizing the MIPAPS Pa{\alpha} and IPHAS H{\alpha} images, we obtain an E(B-V) map for the entire region of the H II region Sh2-131 with an angular size of ~2.5{\deg}. The E(B-V) map shows not only numerous high-extinction filamentary features but also negative E(B-V) regions, indicating H{\alpha} excess.
