The performance of a new dry CO sorbent KEP-CO2P2 was tested for an extended period of time of 650 hours in a 0.5 MW CO capture test bed at Hadong coal-fired power plant. The mass-produced CO dry sorbent, KEP-CO2P2 was tested for CO sorption and regeneration capacity. With modification of the process as well as the use of KEP-CO2P2 sorbent in a 0.5 MW CO capture test bed, 85% (81-90%) CO removal rate was achieved in continuous operation of 650 hours. Samples were collected and analyzed using particle size analyzer (PSA), ion chromatograph (IC), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), field emission-scanning electron Microscope (FE-SEM), electron probe X-ray micro-analyzer (EPMA) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The analysis showed that KEP-CO2P2 was not affected by SO, and there were no side reactions to consume KCO. However, the regeneration of the sorbent was not complete to need future investigation. Abstract: The mass produced K2CO3/Al2O3 sorbents were tested for their CO2 sorption capacity by a 2000Nm3/h (0.5MW) CO2 capture pilot plant, which was built for unit 3 of Hadong thermal power station in 2010. After the commissioning, CO2 capture pilot plant was tested with the flue gas from the power station for 60days. To assess the effect of SO x in the flue gas of coal-fired power plant on the sorbent, the new and used K2CO3/Al2O3 sorbents were analyzed by FE-SEM, IC, EPMA, XRD and XPS. The results show that SO x of 10–40ppm in flue gas was reacted with K2CO3, but not with any other support materials, and formed K2SO4. And also, it is proved that the formed K2SO4 was quite stable in the range of 180–550°C. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: IGCC integrated with CCS has been regarded as a promising option to reduce CO2 emission under the situation that coal is the dominant source among fossil fuels for the electricity-generation. Recently, KEPCO Research Institute proposed the new concept for the pre-combustion CO2 capture process, which is named as one loop sorption enhanced water gas shift (SEWGS) process consisted of two fluidized bed reactors. Sorption enhanced water gas shift (SEWGS) process is combined with the water-gas shift reaction with CO2 capture at the same time. In this study, Five MgO-based dry regenerable CO2 sorbents and Five CuO-based water gas shift catalysts were prepared by spray-drying technique to evaluate their applicability to a fluidized-bed SEWGS process. In these sorbents, MgO-based sorbents satisfied most of the physical requirements for commercial fluidized bed reactor process along with reasonable chemical reactivity. All sorbents had a spherical shape, an average size of 108–150 μm, and a size distribution of 42–250 μm, a bulk density of 0.60–1.16 g/mL. The attrition Index (AI) of all the sorbent was below 15%, compared to about 20% for commercial fluidized catalytic cracking (FCC) catalysts. CO2 sorption capacity of Sorb A was approximately 17.6 wt% at 200 °C and 21 bar with synthesis gas conditions. Spray dried CuO-based WGS catalyst showed relatively good physical properties. Most of catalyst had a spherical shape, an average size of 120–160 um, and a size distribution of 42–250 μm, a bulk density of 0.92–1.06 g/mL. Attrition Indices (AI) of Cat D and Cat E was below 10%, which is suitable for fluidized SEWGS process. CO conversion of Cat E was over 90% at 350 °C with simulated synthesis gas conditions. Two compositions of mixed oxygen carriers (OCs), N1F1A1 (mole ratio of NiO to Fe 2 O 3 is 1:1) and N1F2 (mole ratio of NiO to Fe 2 O 3 is 1:2), were fabricated by mechanical mixing, and the effects of CeO 2 and MgO additives on the oxygen-transfer capacity (OTC) and crystal structure were analyzed. In addition, X-ray diffractometry after the oxidation and the reduction steps was carried out to determine the reaction mechanism. Potential mixed OCs of the candidates of various OCs, such as NiO/Fe 2 O 3 , are proposed based on the OTC and oxygen-transfer rate evaluated via X-ray diffraction (XRD) phase analysis and thermogravimetric analysis. The chemical reaction equation for the oxidation and reduction was suggested based on the XRD characterization of the phases including NiFe 2 O 4 and MgAl 2 O 4 in N1F1A1 (①) and N1F1A1-Mg5 (④). Addition of MgO is confirmed to enhance the OTC and oxygen-transfer rate. The mechanism of the oxidation and reduction of metal oxides and the role of MgO were suggested.
