3. Fresnel-type Solid Immersion Lens for efficient light collection from quantum defects in diamond

Abstract

Quantum defects in diamonds have been studied as a promising resource for quantum science. The subtractive fabrication process for improving photon collection efficiency often require excessive milling time that can adversely affect the fabrication accuracy. We designed and fabricated a Fresnel-type solid immersion lens using the focused ion beam. For a 5.8 um-deep Nitrogen-vacancy (NV-) center, the milling time was highly reduced (1/3 compared to a hemispherical structure), while retaining high photon collection efficiency (> 2.24 compared to a flat surface). Abstract

Versatile nanoscale sensors that are susceptible to changes in a variety of physical quantities often exhibit limited selectivity. This paper reports a novel scheme based on microwave-dressed spin states for optically probed nanoscale temperature detection using diamond quantum sensors, which provides selective sensitivity to temperature changes. By combining this scheme with a continuous pump-probe scheme using ensemble nitrogen-vacancy centers in nanodiamonds, a sub-microsecond temporal resolution with thermal sensitivity of 3.7 K$\cdot$Hz$^{-1/2}$ that is insensitive to variations in external magnetic fields on the order of 2 G is demonstrated. The presented results are favorable for the practical application of time-resolved nanoscale quantum sensing, where temperature imaging is required under fluctuating magnetic fields.

Abstract

Efficiently detecting and characterizing individual spins in solid-state hosts is an essential step to expand the fields of quantum sensing and quantum information processing. While selective detection and control of a few 13C nuclear spins in diamond have been demonstrated using the electron spin of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers, a reliable, efficient, and automatic characterization method is desired. Here, we develop an automated algorithmic method for decomposing spectral data to identify and characterize multiple nuclear spins in diamond. We demonstrate efficient nuclear spin identification and accurate reproduction of hyperfine interaction components for both virtual and experimental nuclear spectroscopy data. We conduct a systematic analysis of this methodology and discuss the range of hyperfine interaction components of each nuclear spin that the method can efficiently detect. The result demonstrates a systematic approach that automatically detects nuclear spins with the aid of computational methods, facilitating the future scalability of devices., Comment: 4 figures, 2 tables

11. Strong polarization of individual nuclear spins weakly coupled to nitrogen-vacancy color centers in diamond

Abstract

We experimentally demonstrate high degree of polarization of 13C nuclear spins weakly interacting with nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. We combine coherent microwave excitation pulses with optical illumination to provide controlled relaxation and achieve a polarity-tunable, fast nuclear polarization of degree higher than 85% at room temperature for remote 13C nuclear spins exhibiting hyperfine interaction strength with NV centers of the order of 600 kHz. We show with the aid of numerical simulation that the anisotropic hyperfine tensor components naturally provide a route to control spin mixing parameter so that highly efficient nuclear polarization is enabled through careful tuning of nuclear quantization axis by external magnetic field. We further discuss spin dynamics and wide applicability of this method to various target 13C nuclear spins around the NV center electron spin. The proposed control method demonstrates an efficient and versatile route to realize, for example, high-fidelity spin register initialization and quantum metrology using nuclear spin resources in solids.

12. An efficient fluorescent single-particle position tracking system for long-term pulsed measurements of nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond

Abstract

A simple and convenient design enables real-time three-dimensional position tracking of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. The system consists entirely of commercially available components (a single photon counter, a high-speed digital-to-analog converter, a phase-sensitive detector-based feedback device, and a piezo stage), eliminating the need for custom programming or rigorous optimization processes. With a large input range of counters and trackers combined with the high sensitivity of single-photon counting, high-speed position tracking (upper bound recovery time of 0.9 s upon 250 nm of step-like positional shift) not only of bright ensembles but also of low-photon-collection-efficiency single to few NV centers is possible. The tracking requires position modulation of only 10 nm, which allows simultaneous position tracking and pulsed measurements in the long term. Therefore, this tracking system enables measuring a single spin magnetic resonance and Rabi oscillations at a very high resolution even without photon collection optimization. Abstract

Large quantities of anthropogenic nitrogen (N) in the marine environment are detrimental for coastal ecosystems and understanding the magnitude and distribution of this N opens paths to remediation. One area of concern is Cocos Lagoon, in the south of Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, which hosts a diversity of corals including Acropora species listed in the Endangered Species Act. Degradation of Guam's coral reefs may be influenced by untreated sewage effluent. To gain insight into the spatial extent of human N pollution, we deployed 50 macroalgal thalli (Padina sp.) as bio-indicators in a grid pattern over the entire lagoon for one week and then measured the stable N isotopes of bio-available N ([delta][sup.15]N). We observed relatively low [delta][sup.15]N values (~1-2[per thousand]) in the shallow areas in the east suggesting coastal currents bringing in fixed N from the open ocean or local [N.sub.2] fixation. The comparatively high [delta][sup.15]N values (~6 [per thousand]) in the deeper channel of the lagoon suggest sewage as a major source of N. The distribution of [delta][sup.15]N values was not determined by the distance to N sources, such as river outlets or the tourist resort on Cocos Island but by the bathymetry, which affects the residence time and influx of oceanic water. Abstract

Many cnidarians host endosymbiotic dinoflagellates from the genus Symbiodinium. It is generally assumed that the symbiosis is mutualistic, where the host benefits from symbiont photosynthesis while providing protection and photosynthetic substrates. Diverse assemblages of symbiotic gorgonian octocorals can be found in hard bottom communities throughout the Caribbean. While current research has focused on the phylo- and population genetics of gorgonian symbiont types and their photo-physiology, relatively less work has focused on biogeochemical benefits conferred to the host and how these benefits vary across host species. Here we examine this symbiosis among 11 gorgonian species collected in Bocas del Toro, Panama. By coupling light and dark bottle incubations (P/R) with (13)C-bicarbonate tracers, we quantified the link between holobiont oxygen metabolism with carbon assimilation and translocation from symbiont to host. Our data show that P/R varied among species, and was correlated with colony morphology and polyp size. 34. Tailoring the SnO2 Ink for Roll‐to‐Roll Manufacturing of Flexible Perovskite Solar Cells.

Abstract

Roll‐to‐roll (R2R) fabrication of high‐performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs) remains challenging for PSC commercialization. Herein, the R2R‐suitable electron transfer layer (ETL) SnO2 ink system for flexible PSCs is investigated. Water‐dispersed SnO2 inks, commonly used for flexible PSCs, form dewetting pinholes during R2R slot‐die coating owing to slower evaporation compared to spin coating. To prevent the dewetting of the pinhole, a low surface tension solvent (isopropyl alcohol, IPA) is added to the SnO2 ink. The IPA addition reduced surface tension, enhancing wetting behavior, but increased SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) aggregation. Interestingly, the fabricated ETL films with highly aggregated SnO2 NPs are smooth, in contrast to the rough layers obtained via the spin‐coating process, owing to the high shear rate. Herein, NP aggregation and surface morphology are explored using Brownian dynamics simulations under shear conditions. Consequently, when the particles are agglomerated, the PSCs with slot‐die coating exhibit higher power conversion efficiency compared to ETL spin‐coated PSCs. Therefore, IPA addition to SnO2 ink is preferred for the R2R slot‐die process by improving the wetting properties and forming smooth films. In this study, a framework is provided for obtaining high‐quality films using the slot‐die coating of ETL and promotes the commercialization of PSCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A consequence of land-use change and increasing human population in the United States and Central America has been an increase in nitrogen availability to coastal systems. Whereas many studies evaluate the influence of anthropogenically derived nutrients in modern oceans, fewer studies evaluate nutrient sources in coastal environments before the 1960s. This study used stable C and N isotope values of 35 big-claw snapping shrimps (Alpheus heterochaelis) and 48 ivory barnacles (Balanus eburneus) across the Gulf of Mexico, southeast coast of the United States, and the Caribbean over 121 y to examine whether human-derived nitrogen was used by coastal invertebrates. Gulf of Mexico and southeast U.S. collections were divided into preand post-1960 groups for analysis, roughly coinciding with the increase in fertilizer use associated with the 'Green Revolution' and large coastal population increases. For B. eburneus. [delta][.sup.15]N decreased in the coastal United States after 1960, but that was not the case for A. heterochaelis. [.sup.15]N-depleted fertilizer would be quickly incorporated by filter-feeding B. eburneus (via plankton). By contrast, the scavenging, omnivorous, A. heterochaelis would obtain more N from heterotrophic organic matter more isolated from the [.sup.15]N-depleted fertilizer signal. The Caribbean A. heterochaelis incorporated seagrass C and N. Local variation in N sources from the different collection areas was clearly observed.
