19. Nonstring Music Teachers' Comfort Teaching String Ensembles

Abstract

This study was designed to explore nonstring specialists' comfort teaching students in string ensembles. Comfort was defined as an individual's ease when teaching the subject matter. Data were gathered, using a 7-point Likert-type scale related to 15 string topics administered through a researcher-developed study. Participants ("N" = 180), who were identified through the National Association for Music Education membership list, were contacted via email. Responses were analyzed using descriptive and parametric statistics. Results revealed that band specialists felt significantly more comfortable in string teaching situations than choir and elementary general music specialists. Participants who took a string methods course, as compared with those who did not, felt more comfortable teaching seven specific string topics. Participants who were currently teaching string ensembles felt more comfortable teaching all string topics, except for vibrato technique. Participants who had taught strings in the past were significantly more comfortable teaching string ensembles than those who had never taught strings. The findings of this study could help higher education string methods instructors select instructional activities and course topics that were revealed to provide the most beneficial experiences.

20. Elementary Students' Management of Conflicts in an Engineering Design Process and Its Effects on Their Group Interaction Progress

Abstract

This study aimed to examine how students managed conflicts in an engineering design process and how different management styles affected their group interaction progress. We observed three groups of students in classes, where they designed devices to solve water shortages. Students' interactions involving conflict in these lessons were analyzed in terms of their conflict management style. Twenty conflict-based interactions were observed in the process of engineering design, and these occurred in all groups. Most conflict-based interactions we observed were task conflicts, and students showed conflict management styles of dominating, avoiding, obliging, integrating, and compromising. These different conflict management styles led to different amounts of progress in group interactions. Avoiding and dominating terminated interactions and prevented students from developing their ideas further. Dominating and obliging caused relationship conflict. Integrating and compromising management styles led to more productive student interactions. This study suggests that further educational efforts are necessary to teach students how to effectively manage conflicts in engineering design processes.

21. Global Citizenship Education in South Korea : politics, policy and practice at national, regional and school levels

Abstract

In the past decade, South Korea has positioned itself as a global leader in Global Citizenship Education (GCED) and is actively engaged in the international policy process. In this context of state-led GCED, regional- and school-level initiatives to promote GCED have also emerged. One of such attempts is the GCED Policy School introduced by the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education (SMOE); both GCED Policy Schools and SMOE serve as the main sites of inquiry for this study. Qualitative studies on GCED have been thus far heavily dominated by Western-oriented perspectives and case studies and have often lacked a holistic and comprehensive approach for involving both policy makers and practitioners. In order to address this gap, this qualitative study analyzes documents and interviews collected from SMOE and seven GCED Policy Schools in Seoul, the capital of South Korea, through a constructivist interpretive paradigm. By engaging with multiple levels of stakeholders, this study aims to answer the following Research Questions: 1) Why did the SMOE introduce GCED as a key policy area? 2) How is GCED conceptualized in the policy? 3) How are global citizenship and GCED perceived and practiced by different practitioners at the school level (i.e., school leaders, teachers and students)? 4) What are the professional, material and external contexts that influence implementers' perceptions and practices? In addressing these questions, two theoretical heuristics are used for analysis and have led to key findings. First, the GCED conceptual framework presents four different approaches to GCED (i.e., neoliberal, tourist, humanitarian and critical); the findings suggest that the tourist and humanitarian models of GCED are more predominant than others in regional-level policy and in school practices of GCED. Second, this study also draws on Stephen Ball's policy cycle and demonstrates that the policy formation and the school-level implementation of GCED is neither linear nor straightforward but a consistent process of political compromises and recontextualization.

32. Undergraduate Choral Methods Instructors' Value Ratings of Choral Methods Topics for Non-Choral Music Education Majors

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore participants' value ratings of specific methods course topics in the choral teaching preparedness of non-choral music education majors. Forty-four university/college level choral methods instructors, identified through the College Music Society membership list, participated in the survey. Participants rated 16 choral methods topics using a seven-point Likert-type scale (1 = "Not Very Important;" 7 = "Very Important") in their importance to non-choral music education majors' choral teaching preparedness. Participants identified choral rehearsal techniques, vocal techniques, and choral repertoire as the three most important topics. Participants also identified choral student recruitment and retention, choral conducting techniques, choral student recruitment and retention, and choral class administrative tasks as the three least important topics. The findings of this study may provide undergraduate choral methods instructors information on developing effective course experiences in the preparation of non-choral music education majors for future classroom choral instruction.

33. Instrumentalists' Comfort and Self-Perceived Competence in Teaching Choral Music

Abstract

This study was designed to explore differences between instrumental music teachers' comfort and self-perceived competence ratings based on their undergraduate choral methods curricular background and in-service choral teaching experiences, using a 7-point Likert scale, on 15 specific choral teaching skills presented through a researcher-developed survey. In this study, data computation included descriptive and non-parametric statistics to analyze the participants' (N = 106) responses. According to this study, the participants' undergraduate choral methods curricular experience had a positive influence on comfort and self-perceived competence when instrumental music teachers taught choirs in secondary school classrooms. Instrumental music teachers self-reported being more comfortable and competent in teaching choral music as teaching experience increased. Based on this study's findings, it is important to facilitate opportunities for both pre-and in-service instrumental music teachers to explore voice as an instrument and various levels of secondary school choral repertoire.
