8. Nucleation, growth, and superlattice formation of nanocrystals observed in liquid cell transmission electron microscopy

Abstract

This article reviews the advancements and prospects of liquid cell transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging and analysis methods in understanding the nucleation, growth, etching, and assembly dynamics of nanocrystals. The bonding of atoms into nanoscale crystallites produces materials with nonadditive properties unique to their size and geometry. The recent application of in situ liquid cell TEM to nanocrystal development has initiated a paradigm shift, (1) from trial-And-error synthesis to a mechanistic understanding of the synthetic reactions responsible for the emergence of crystallites from a disordered soup of reactive species (e.g., ions, atoms, molecules) and shape-defined growth or etching; and (2)A from post-processing characterization of the nanocrystals' superlattice assemblies to inA situ imaging and mapping of the fundamental interactions and energy landscape governing their collective phase behaviors. Imaging nanocrystal formation and assembly processes on the single-particle level in solution immediately impacts many existing fields, including materials science, nanochemistry, colloidal science, biology, environmental science, electrochemistry, mineralization, soft condensed-matter physics, and device fabrication.

Abstract

Trichothecenes (deoxynivalenol, 3- and 15-acetyl-deoxynivalenol) and zearalenone are toxic secondary metabolites produced by Fusarium species. Although managing these mycotoxins simultaneously is crucial, current analytical methods differ because of their distinct properties. In this study, food matrix extraction conditions were established and applied to cereal-based foods (n = 90). The optimal conditions were developed by utilizing fragment ions and precursors, following the guidelines established by the Association of Official Agricultural Chemists (AOAC). The developed method demonstrated high accuracy and reliability within 20 min, even for samples with low concentrations. Consequently, the recovery range of the fat-oil-processed products and cereal sirup improved from 27.0% to 98.3% and 27.6% to 97.8%, respectively. This improved extraction method offers a more convenient and rapid approach for the analysis of various matrices. Furthermore, these optimized methods can be extended to monitor the co-occurrence of mycotoxins in cereal-based foods, providing valuable assistance to the food industry and regulatory agencies for detecting and monitoring mycotoxins that may pose potential health risks. 23. Swelling Behaviors of Natural Rubber/Solvent Systems Based on the Extended Modified Double Lattice Model.

Abstract

Swelling experiments are conducted on nonfiller natural rubber using four solvents (toluene, cyclohexane, tetrahydrofuran (THF), and methylethylketone (MEK)) over temperatures from 10 to 70 °C. Toluene, cyclohexane, and THF, classified as effective solvents, show swelling ratios between 3 and 7, influenced by the crosslink density of the rubber. MEK, however, has a lower ratio of 1.5 to 2. Temperature has a minor impact on swelling compared to the crosslink density. The study evaluates the Extended Modified Double Lattice (EMDL) model for its mixing contribution in polymer network swelling, aiming to improve the Flory–Hüggins (FH) model. The superiority of EMDL above FH is in the boundary condition at the unvulcanized state, the former aligning its interaction energy with values from solvent activities in primary linear polymer/solvent solutions, unlike the FH model. The EMDL model also accounts for oriented interactions in polar solvents through a secondary lattice, linking specific interaction energy with solvent dipole moments. The study observes a nonlinear correlation between crosslinking density and sulfur amount, proposing a nonrandom mixing at lower sulfur concentrations. This model shows strong alignment with experimental data, suggesting that replacing the FH model's mixing contribution with the EMDL model could improve results with minimal additional complexity. Abstract

Structural, electronic and dielectric properties of high-quality ultrathin BaTiO3 films are investigated. The films, which are grown by ozone-assisted molecular beam epitaxy on Nb-doped SrTiO3 (001) substrates and having thicknesses as thin 8 unit cells (3.2 nm), are unreconstructed and atomically smooth with large crystalline terraces. A strain-driven transition to 3D island formation is observed for films of of 13 unit cells thickness (5.2 nm). The high structural quality of the surfaces, together with the dielectric properties similar to bulk BaTiO3 and dominantly TiO2 surface termination, make these films suitable templates for the synthesis of high-quality metal-oxide multiferroic heterostructures for the fundamental study and exploitation of magneto-electric effects, such as a recently proposed interface effect in Fe/BaTiO3 heterostructures based on Fe-Ti interface bonds.
