Abstract Introduction Parents of children with a neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD) experience more stress than parents of typically developing children. In a cocreation process with experts and parents, a low-threshold application that uses exercises based on the principles of positive psychology and mindfulness was developed. This application, called “Adappt,” aims at enhancing the ability to adapt of the parents and caregivers of children with NDDs and at supporting their mental health. This protocol describes the evaluation study of the effectiveness of Adappt, its core working mechanisms and user experiences. Method A pragmatic international multicenter randomized controlled trial will compare the effectiveness of Adappt with a (delayed) waitlist control condition. At least 212 parents or primary caregivers of children younger than 18 years diagnosed with or suspected of a NDD will be randomly assigned to the intervention or waitlist control condition. Participants are excluded if they have severe anxiety or depression levels or are in treatment for mental health issues. Measures will be collected online at baseline, post-intervention (1 month after baseline), and 4 and 7 months after baseline. The primary outcome is the improvement in generic sense of ability to adapt as measured with the Generic Sense of Ability to Adapt Scale (GSAAS; (Front Psychol 14:985408, 2023)) at 4-month follow-up. Secondary outcomes are mental well-being, (parental) distress, and client satisfaction with “Adappt.” Discussion Results of this study will contribute to knowledge on the effectiveness of a low-threshold application for parents of children with a NDD in multiple countries. If the application is found to be effective in improving mental health, recommendations will be made for implementation in health care. Trial registration This study is registered on clinicaltrials.gov (NCT06248762) on February 8, 2024, and the Open Science Framework ( https://osf.io/5znqv ).

Detection of Schistosoma spp. DNA in gynaecological samples by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) is considered to be the reference diagnostic test for female genital schistosomiasis (FGS). However, qPCR needs expensive laboratory procedures and highly trained technicians. Loop-mediated amplification (LAMP) is a more field-friendly isothermal procedure for the detection of parasite-specific DNA, but it still requires electrically powered equipment. Here, we validated a Schistosoma haematobium-specific Sh-LAMP procedure and tested a fully instrument-free isothermal amplification using a novel low-cost, and reusable Temperature-cup (T-cup) device. Specific primers were selected based on published assays, targeting the ribosomal intergenic spacer (IGS) region of S. haematobium. Technical validation of the IGS-Sh-LAMP was performed using 20 negative controls, including DNA extracts of soil-transmitted helminths and S. mansoni, and a 10-fold dilution series (100–10−3) of DNA extracted from a single S. haematobium egg (n=4). For clinical validation, the IGS-Sh-LAMP was tested on 125 DNA samples extracted from vaginal swabs of a previous FGS study in Madagascar. Results were compared with the quantification cycle value (Cq) of the standard ITS-2 targeting qPCR. Single S. haematobium egg DNA up to a 10–2 dilution and an ITS-2 Cq

Abstract Background High-quality malaria diagnosis is essential for effective treatment and clinical disease management. Microscopy and rapid diagnostic tests are the conventional methods performed as first-line malaria diagnostics in non-endemic countries. However, these methods lack the characteristic to detect very low parasitaemia, and accurate identification of the Plasmodium species can be difficult. This study evaluated the performance of the MC004 melting curve-based qPCR for the diagnosis of malaria in routine clinical practice in non-endemic setting. Methods and results Whole blood samples were collected from 304 patients with clinical suspicion of malaria and analysed by both the MC004 assay and conventional diagnostics. Two discrepancies were found between the MC004 assay and microscopy. Repeated microscopic analysis confirmed the qPCR results. Comparison of the parasitaemia of nineteen Plasmodium falciparum samples determined by both microscopy and qPCR showed the potential of the MC004 assay to estimate the parasite load of P. falciparum. Eight Plasmodium infected patients were followed after anti-malarial treatment by the MC004 assay and microscopy. The MC004 assay still detected Plasmodium DNA although no parasites were seen with microscopy in post-treatment samples. The rapid decline in Plasmodium DNA showed the potential for therapy-monitoring. Conclusion Implementation of the MC004 assay in non-endemic clinical setting improved the diagnosis of malaria. The MC004 assay demonstrated superior Plasmodium species identification, the ability to indicate the Plasmodium parasite load, and can potentially detect submicroscopic Plasmodium infections.

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
In the N=1 supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model, neutralinos associated in supermultiplets with the neutral electroweak gauge and Higgs bosons are, as well as gluinos, Majorana fermions. They can be paired with the Majorana fermions of novel gaugino/scalar supermultiplets, as suggested by extended N=2 supersymmetry, to Dirac particles. Matter fields are not extended beyond the standard N=1 supermultiplets in N=1/N=2 hybrid supersymmetry to preserve the chiral character of the theory. Complementing earlier analyses in the color sector, central elements of such an electroweak scenario are analyzed in the present study. The decay properties of the Dirac fermions and of the scalar bosons are worked out, and the single and pair production channels of the new particles are described for proton collisions at the LHC, and electron/positron and photon-photon collisions at linear colliders. Special attention is paid to modifications of the Higgs sector, identified with an N=2 hypermultiplet, by the mixing with the novel electroweak scalar sector., Comment: 33 pp. + 9 pp. appendix; few typos corrected, version to appear in JHEP

We compute one-loop corrections to the annihilation of non--relativistic particles $\chi$ due to the exchange of a (gauge or Higgs) boson $\phi$ with mass $\mu$ in the initial state. In the limit $m_\chi \gg \mu$ this leads to the "Sommerfeld enhancement" of the annihilation cross section. However, here we are interested in the case $\mu \lsim m_\chi$, where the one--loop corrections are well--behaved, but can still be sizable. We find simple and accurate expressions for annihilation from both $S-$ and $P-$wave initial states; they differ from each other if $\mu \neq 0$. In order to apply our results to the calculation of the relic density of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), we describe how to compute the thermal average of the corrected cross sections. We apply this formalism to scalar and Dirac fermion singlet WIMPs, and show that the corrections are always very small in the former case, but can be very large in the latter. Moreover, in the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, these corrections can decrease the relic density of neutralinos by more than 1%, if the lightest neutralino is a strongly mixed state., Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures. Added an appendix showing that the approximation works well in a scalar toy model. To be published in PRD.

The color gauge hyper-multiplet in N=2 supersymmetry consists of the usual N=1 gauge vector/gaugino super-multiplet, joined with a novel gaugino/scalar super-multiplet. Large cross sections are predicted for the production of pairs of the color-octet scalars $\sigma$ [sgluons] at the LHC: $gg, q\bar{q} \to \sigma\sigma^{\ast}$. Single $\sigma$ production is possible at one-loop level, but the $g g\to \sigma$ amplitude vanishes in the limit of degenerate $L$ and $R$ squarks. When kinematically allowed, $\sigma$ decays predominantly into two gluinos, whose cascade decays give rise to a burst of eight or more jets together with four LSP's as signature for $\sigma$ pair events at the LHC. $\sigma$ can also decay into a squark-antisquark pair at tree level. At one-loop level $\sigma$ decays into gluons or a $t \bar t$ pair are predicted, generating exciting resonance signatures in the final states. The corresponding partial widths are very roughly comparable to that for three body final states mediated by one virtual squark at tree level., Comment: LaTeX, 12 pages, 5 embedded figures. Results are presented of single crystal structural, thermodynamic, and reflectivity measurements of the double-perovskite Ba2NaOsO6. These characterize the material as a 5d^1 ferromagnetic Mott insulator with an ordered moment of ~0.2 Bohr magnetons per formula unit and TC = 6.8(3) K. The magnetic entropy associated with this phase transition is close to Rln2, indicating that the quartet groundstate anticipated from consideration of the crystal structure is split, consistent with a scenario in which the ferromagnetism is associated with orbital ordering., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, added references

Condensed Matter - Soft Condensed Matter - Abstract
The short-range order which remains when the isotropic to smectic-A transition is perturbed by a gel of silica nanoparticles (aerosils) has been studied using high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction. The gels have been created \textit{in situ} in decylcyanobiphenyl (10CB), which has a strongly first-order isotropic to smectic-A transition. The effects are determined by detailed analysis of the temperature and gel density dependence of the smectic structure factor. In previous studies of the continuous nematic to smectic-A transition in a variety of thermotropic liquid crystals the aerosil gel appeared to pin, at random, the phase of the smectic density modulation. For the isotropic to smectic-A transition the same gel perturbation yields different results. The smectic correlation length decreases more slowly with increasing random field variance in good quantitative agreement with the effect of a random pinning field at a transition from a uniform phase directly to a phase with one-dimensional translational order. We thus compare the influence of random fields on a \textit{freezing} transition with and without an intervening orientationally ordered phase., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

Condensed Matter - Abstract
We show by numerical simulations that discretized versions of commonly studied continuum nonlinear growth equations (such as the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation and the Lai-Das Sarma equation) and related atomistic models of epitaxial growth have a generic instability in which isolated pillars (or grooves) on an otherwise flat interface grow in time when their height (or depth) exceeds a critical value. Depending on the details of the model, the instability found in the discretized version may or may not be present in the truly continuum growth equation, indicating that the behavior of discretized nonlinear growth equations may be very different from that of their continuum counterparts. This instability can be controlled either by the introduction of higher-order nonlinear terms with appropriate coefficients or by restricting the growth of pillars (or grooves) by other means. A number of such ``controlled instability'' models are studied by simulation. For appropriate choice of the parameters used for controlling the instability, these models exhibit intermittent behavior, characterized by multiexponent scaling of height fluctuations, over the time interval during which the instability is active. The behavior found in this regime is very similar to the ``turbulent'' behavior observed in recent simulations of several one- and two-dimensional atomistic models of epitaxial growth. Condensed Matter - Abstract
Stochastic simulation results, appropriate for Molecular Beam Epitaxy, involving ballistic deposition and thermally activated Arrhenius diffusion of adatoms are presented for one- and two-dimensional substrates, allowing for overhangs and bulk vacancies. The asymptotic Kardar-Parisi- Zhang universality is found to be triggered by a sudden nucleation of large-scale defect formation in the growing film that shows a distinct dependence on dimensionality. The pre-nucleation transient behavior, which may be of experimental relevance due to the low defect content, is associated with standard solid-on-solid universality classes., Comment: 20 pages (+4 figures - not included), Latex 2.95, PP-1133

Condensed Matter - Abstract
We generalize the KPZ equation to an O(3) $N=2j+1$ component model. In the limit $N \to \infty$ we show that the mode coupling equations become exact. Solving these approximately we find that the dynamic exponent $z$ increases from $3/2$ for $d=1$ to $2$ at the dimension $d\approx3.6$. For $d=1$ it can be shown analytically that $z=3/2$ for all $j$. The case $j=2$ for $d=2$ is investigated by numerical integration of the KPZ equation., Comment: 12 pages + 2 figures available on request, LaTeX version 3.1

The intervention “Living well with a Heart disease” (Dutch: “Goed Leven met een Hartaandoening”) is an eight-week multicomponent positive psychology group intervention for cardiological stable patients with heart disease (heart failure, heart attack or heart condition). The intervention has been pilot-tested in a group of five patients with a heart disease in the general hospital. Findings of this pilot study showed that the intervention was acceptable and feasible in this target group. Four participants showed reliable change in personal recovery. These results showed that the intervention can be promising in a group setting. However, more in-depth insight into working mechanisms, the therapy-experience (i.e. the opinion of participants on specific parts of the intervention, e.g. content of the intervention, the homework assignments as well as aspects of the group process) and potential and broad range of (potential) effects of the “Living well with a Heart disease” intervention. Insight in the therapy-experience and working mechanisms can be used to eventually improve (aspects of) the intervention. Insight in (potential) effects can help to better evaluate the effects of the intervention. Therefore, a single case study will be conducted in which a few participants will be interviewed and followed more intensively before, during and after the intervention. The research questions are: Which mechanisms or elements contribute to the effects of the intervention? What does the “Living well with a Heart disease” intervention mean for heart patients?

- Abstract
Additional file 1: Fig S1. Melting curves of one P. malariae patient and four P. falciparum (parasitaemia ranging from 0.1-3.1%) patients that were followed after starting anti-malarial treatment. The specific melting curve pattern was used to identify the Plasmodium species. The x-axis shows the temperature (°C). The y-axis shows the negative derivative of fluorescence (RFU) with respect to temperature (T). The Plasmodium species is indicated in the left corner of each figure. The amount of days after the start of anti-malarial treatment is indicated at the right of the melting curves. Red curves correspond to the Texas Red labelled probe, purple curves to the Cy5 labelled probe, and brown curves to the Cy5.5 labelled probe. For the sake of clarity, not all follow-up samples are included in the figures.
