Motivated by the rapid experimental progress in twisted van der Waals materials, we study the triangular trimer model as a representative framework for extended Wannier orbitals in twisted bilayer graphene at 1/3-filling. This deceptively simple model exhibits a rich suite of complex phases, including unusual excitations exhibiting the physics of fractionalization and fractons. For our investigations, we carry out extensive Monte Carlo simulations using an efficient cluster algorithm. The so-obtained finite-temperature phase diagram reveals a novel polar fluid and an ordered brick-wall phase characterized by fractionally charged $e/3$ excitations with subdimensional lineonic dynamics. Notably, we identify a critical trimer liquid phase for the particularly simple model of hard trimers. For this, we derive a new field theory which takes the form of a U(1)$\times$U(1) gauge theory. Its $e/3$ monomers are fractionalized bionic excitations: they carry a {\it pair} of emergent gauge charges, as evidenced by algebraic correlations with two distinct exponents. These field theoretical predictions offer theoretical grounds for numerical observations of critical exponents. Our study highlights the triangular trimer model as a new key platform for investigating fractionalization and fractons, where trimer liquid bionic monomers can transform into lineons or fractons in proximate phases, and calls for experimental investigations of this physics in twisted van der Waals materials and a broader class of systems with intermediate-range interactions., Comment: 8+13 pages

We present X-ray scattering studies resolving structural twinning and phase separation in the charge density wave (CDW) state of the kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. The three-dimensional CDW state in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ is reported to form a complex superposition of Star of David (SoD) or Tri-Hexagonal (TrH) patterns of distortion within its kagome planes, but the out-of-plane stacking is marked by metastability. In order to resolve the impact of this metastability, we present reciprocal space mapping and real-space images of CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ collected across multiple length scales using temperature-dependent high-dynamic range mapping (HDRM) and dark-field X-ray microscopy (DFXM). The experimental data provide evidence for a rich microstructure that forms in the CDW state. Data evidence metastability in the formation of $2\times 2\times 4$ and $2\times 2\times 2$ CDW supercells dependent on thermal history and mechanical deformation. We further directly resolve the real space phase segregation of both supercells as well as a real-space, structural twinning driven by the broken rotational symmetry of the CDW state. Our combined results provide insights into the role of microstructure and twinning in experiments probing the electronic properties of CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ where rotational symmetry is broken by the three-dimensional charge density wave order but locally preserved for any single kagome layer., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

Fibonacci string-net condensate, a complex topological state that supports non-Abelian anyon excitations, holds promise for fault-tolerant universal quantum computation. However, its realization by a static-lattice Hamiltonian has remained elusive due to the inherent high-order interactions demanded. Here, we introduce a scalable dynamical string-net preparation (DSNP) approach, suitable even for near-term quantum processors, that can dynamically prepare the state through reconfigurable graphs. DSNP enables the creation and manipulation of the Fibonacci string-net condensate (Fib-SNC). Using a superconducting quantum processor, we couple the DSNP approach with a composite error-mitigation strategy on deep circuits to successfully create, measure, and braid Fibonacci anyons in two spatial dimensions (2D) demonstrating their potential for universal quantum computation. To this end, we measure anyon charges for two species of anyons associated with the doubled topological quantum field theory underlying Fid-SNC, with an average experimental accuracy of 94%. We validate that a scalable 2D braiding operation on a logical qubit encoded on three anyons yields the golden ratio $\phi$ with 98% average accuracy and 8% measurement uncertainty. We further sample the Fib-SNC wavefunction to estimate the chromatic polynomial at $\phi+2$ for various graphs. Given the established computational hardness of the chromatic polynomial, the wavefunction amplitude is classically hard to evaluate. We examined archival Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer data to search for far-ultraviolet emission lines in the starburst galaxy M82. The observations were made in an outflow region that extends beyond the galactic disk. We found the O VI $\lambda\lambda$ 1032, 1038 emission lines from the galaxy's southern outflow region. The O VI lines suggest that the outflowing warm-hot gas is undergoing radiative cooling. We measured a radial velocity of $\sim$420 km s$^{-1}$ from the O VI lines, which is faster than the velocity seen in H$\alpha$ observations. The O VI $\lambda$1038 emission line seems to be blended with the C II $\lambda$1037 emission line, which has a radial velocity of $\sim$300 km s$^{-1}$, similar to what is observed in H$\alpha$ observations. The outflow medium of M82 appears to be composed of gas in multiple phases with varying temperatures and kinematics. The imminent era of error-corrected quantum computing urgently demands robust methods to characterize complex quantum states, even from limited and noisy measurements. We introduce the Quantum Attention Network (QuAN), a versatile classical AI framework leveraging the power of attention mechanisms specifically tailored to address the unique challenges of learning quantum complexity. Inspired by large language models, QuAN treats measurement snapshots as tokens while respecting their permutation invariance. Combined with a novel parameter-efficient mini-set self-attention block (MSSAB), such data structure enables QuAN to access high-order moments of the bit-string distribution and preferentially attend to less noisy snapshots. We rigorously test QuAN across three distinct quantum simulation settings: driven hard-core Bose-Hubbard model, random quantum circuits, and the toric code under coherent and incoherent noise. QuAN directly learns the growth in entanglement and state complexity from experimentally obtained computational basis measurements. In particular, it learns the growth in complexity of random circuit data upon increasing depth from noisy experimental data. Taken to a regime inaccessible by existing theory, QuAN unveils the complete phase diagram for noisy toric code data as a function of both noise types. This breakthrough highlights the transformative potential of using purposefully designed AI-driven solutions to assist quantum hardware.

An out-of-plane magnetic field can always suppress superconductivity. In Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene (BBG), recently observed activation of superconductivity (SC) through either in-plane magnetic fields or proximate spin-orbit coupling (SOC) offers a rare instance of switching superconductivity on. To understand this, we must first examine the non-superconducting state. We propose an incommensurate current density wave (CrDW) driven by van Hove singularities away from the zone corners as a competing order. We note that the two switches, the in-plane field and the SOC, both break spin degeneracy. Our parquet renormalization group analysis reveals that breaking spin degeneracy shifts the balance from CrDW, favored under spin degeneracy, to SC when degeneracy is lifted. Driven by purely repulsive interactions, the pairing symmetry of the resulting SC is $p/d$-wave. The presence of CrDW accounts for the non-linear $I-V$ behavior in the normal state and suggests potential anomalous Hall effects due to time-reversal symmetry breaking. We further predict that reducing screening could enhance SC.

We introduce HyperCLOVA X, a family of large language models (LLMs) tailored to the Korean language and culture, along with competitive capabilities in English, math, and coding. HyperCLOVA X was trained on a balanced mix of Korean, English, and code data, followed by instruction-tuning with high-quality human-annotated datasets while abiding by strict safety guidelines reflecting our commitment to responsible AI. The model is evaluated across various benchmarks, including comprehensive reasoning, knowledge, commonsense, factuality, coding, math, chatting, instruction-following, and harmlessness, in both Korean and English. HyperCLOVA X exhibits strong reasoning capabilities in Korean backed by a deep understanding of the language and cultural nuances. Further analysis of the inherent bilingual nature and its extension to multilingualism highlights the model's cross-lingual proficiency and strong generalization ability to untargeted languages, including machine translation between several language pairs and cross-lingual inference tasks. The Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) is a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm for quantum simulation that can be run on near-term quantum hardware. A challenge in VQE -- as well as any other heuristic algorithm for finding ground states of Hamiltonians -- is to know how close the algorithm's output solution is to the true ground state, when the true ground state and ground-state energy are unknown. This is especially important in iterative algorithms, such as VQE, where one wants to avoid erroneous early termination. Recent developments in Hamiltonian reconstruction -- the inference of a Hamiltonian given an eigenstate -- give a metric can be used to assess the quality of a variational solution to a Hamiltonian-eigensolving problem. This metric can assess the proximity of the variational solution to the ground state without any knowledge of the true ground state or ground-state energy. In numerical simulations and in demonstrations on a cloud-based trapped-ion quantum computer, we show that for examples of both one-dimensional transverse-field-Ising (11 qubits) and two-dimensional J1-J2 transverse-field-Ising (6 qubits) spin problems, the Hamiltonian-reconstruction distance gives a helpful indication of whether VQE has yet found the ground state or not. Our experiments included cases where the energy plateaus as a function of the VQE iteration, which could have resulted in erroneous early stopping of the VQE algorithm, but where the Hamiltonian-reconstruction distance correctly suggests to continue iterating. We find that the Hamiltonian-reconstruction distance has a useful correlation with the fidelity between the VQE solution and the true ground state. Our work suggests that the Hamiltonian-reconstruction distance may be a useful tool for assessing success in VQE, including on noisy quantum processors in practice., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures

Large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated an unprecedented ability to perform complex tasks in multiple domains, including mathematical and scientific reasoning. We demonstrate that with carefully designed prompts, LLMs can accurately carry out key calculations in research papers in theoretical physics. We focus on a broadly used approximation method in quantum physics: the Hartree-Fock method, requiring an analytic multi-step calculation deriving approximate Hamiltonian and corresponding self-consistency equations. To carry out the calculations using LLMs, we design multi-step prompt templates that break down the analytic calculation into standardized steps with placeholders for problem-specific information. We evaluate GPT-4's performance in executing the calculation for 15 research papers from the past decade, demonstrating that, with correction of intermediate steps, it can correctly derive the final Hartree-Fock Hamiltonian in 13 cases and makes minor errors in 2 cases. Aggregating across all research papers, we find an average score of 87.5 (out of 100) on the execution of individual calculation steps. Overall, the requisite skill for doing these calculations is at the graduate level in quantum condensed matter theory. We further use LLMs to mitigate the two primary bottlenecks in this evaluation process: (i) extracting information from papers to fill in templates and (ii) automatic scoring of the calculation steps, demonstrating good results in both cases. Geometric frustration is a phenomenon in a lattice system where not all interactions can be satisfied, the simplest example being antiferromagnetically coupled spins on a triangular lattice. Frustrated systems are characterized by their many nearly degenerate ground states, leading to non-trivial phases such as spin ice and spin liquids. To date most studies are on geometric frustration of spins; much less explored is orbital geometric frustration. For electrons in twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) at denominator 3 fractional filling, Coulomb interactions and the Wannier orbital shapes are predicted to strongly constrain spatial charge ordering, leading to geometrically frustrated ground states that produce a new class of correlated insulators (CIs). Here we report the observation of dominant denominator 3 fractional filling insulating states in large angle tBLG; these states persist in magnetic fields and display magnetic ordering signatures and tripled unit cell reconstruction. These results are in agreement with a strong-coupling theory of symmetry-breaking of geometrically frustrated fractional states.

Generalized Wigner Crystal (GWC) is a novel quantum phase of matter driven by further-range interaction at fractional fillings of a lattice. The role of further range interaction as the driver for the incompressible state is akin to Wigner crystal. On the other hand, the significant role of commensurate filling is akin to the Mott insulator. Recent progress in simulator platforms presents unprecedented opportunities to investigate quantum melting in the strongly interacting regime through synergy between theory and experiments. However, the earlier theory literature presents diverging predictions. We study the quantum freezing of GWC through large-scale density matrix renormalization group simulations of a triangular lattice extended Hubbard model. We find a single first-order phase transition between the Fermi liquid and the $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ GWC state. The GWC state shows long-range antiferromagnetic $120^\circ$ N{\'e}el order. Our results present the simplest answers to the question of the quantum phase transition into the GWC phase and the properties of the GWC phase., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

The advent of material databases provides an unprecedented opportunity to uncover predictive descriptors for emergent material properties from vast data space. However, common reliance on high-throughput ab initio data necessarily inherits limitations of such data: mismatch with experiments. On the other hand, experimental decisions are often guided by an expert's intuition honed from experiences that are rarely articulated. We propose using machine learning to "bottle" such operational intuition into quantifiable descriptors using expertly curated measurement-based data. We introduce "Materials Expert-Artificial Intelligence" (ME-AI) to encapsulate and articulate this human intuition. As a first step towards such a program, we focus on the topological semimetal (TSM) among square-net materials as the property inspired by the expert-identified descriptor based on structural information: the tolerance factor. We start by curating a dataset encompassing 12 primary features of 879 square-net materials, using experimental data whenever possible. We then use Dirichlet-based Gaussian process regression using a specialized kernel to reveal composite descriptors for square-net topological semimetals. The ME-AI learned descriptors independently reproduce expert intuition and expand upon it. Specifically, new descriptors point to hypervalency as a critical chemical feature predicting TSM within square-net compounds. In the mental health domain, Large Language Models (LLMs) offer promising new opportunities, though their inherent complexity and low controllability have raised questions about their suitability in clinical settings. We present MindfulDiary, a mobile journaling app incorporating an LLM to help psychiatric patients document daily experiences through conversation. Designed in collaboration with mental health professionals (MHPs), MindfulDiary takes a state-based approach to safely comply with the experts' guidelines while carrying on free-form conversations. Through a four-week field study involving 28 patients with major depressive disorder and five psychiatrists, we found that MindfulDiary supported patients in consistently enriching their daily records and helped psychiatrists better empathize with their patients through an understanding of their thoughts and daily contexts. Here we study the stability of charge order in the kagome metal ScV6Sn6. Synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements reveal high-temperature, short-range charge correlations at the wave vectors along q=(1/3,1/3,1/2) whose inter-layer correlation lengths diverge upon cooling. At the charge order transition, this divergence is interrupted and long-range order freezes in along q=(1/3,1/3,1/3), as previously reported, while disorder enables the charge correlations to persist at the q=(1/3,1/3,1/2) wave vector down to the lowest temperatures measured. Both short-range and long-range charge correlations seemingly arise from the same instability and both are rapidly quenched upon the introduction of larger Y ions onto the Sc sites. Our results validate the theoretical prediction of the primary lattice instability at q=(1/3,1/3,1/2), and we present a heuristic picture for viewing the frustration of charge order in this compound.

The ideal honeycomb lattice, featuring sublattice and SU(2) spin rotation symmetries, is a fundamental model for investigating quantum matters with topology and correlations. With the rise of the moir\'e-based design of model systems, realizing a tunable and symmetric honeycomb lattice system with a narrow bandwidth can open access to new phases and insights. We propose the ABBA-stacked twisted double bilayer WSe$_2$ as a realistic and tunable platform for reaching this goal. Adjusting the twist angle allows the bandwidth and the ratio between hopping parameters of different ranges to be tuned. Moreover, the system's small bandwidth and spin rotation symmetry enable effective control of the electronic structure through an in-plane magnetic field. We construct an extended Hubbard model for the system to demonstrate this tunability and explore possible ordered phases using the Hartree-Fock approximation. We find that at a hole filling of $\nu = 2$ (two holes per moir\'e unit cell), an in-plane magnetic field of a few Tesla can ``dope" the system from a semimetal to a metal. Interactions then drive an instability towards a canted antiferromagnetic insulator ground state. Additionally, we observe a competing insulating phase with sublattice charge polarization. With rapid progress in simulation of strongly interacting quantum Hamiltonians, the challenge in characterizing unknown phases becomes a bottleneck for scientific progress. We demonstrate that a Quantum-Classical hybrid approach (QuCl) of mining sampled projective snapshots with interpretable classical machine learning can unveil signatures of seemingly featureless quantum states. The Kitaev-Heisenberg model on a honeycomb lattice under external magnetic field presents an ideal system to test QuCl, where simulations have found an intermediate gapless phase (IGP) sandwiched between known phases, launching a debate over its elusive nature. We use the correlator convolutional neural network, trained on labeled projective snapshots, in conjunction with regularization path analysis to identify signatures of phases. We show that QuCl reproduces known features of established phases. Significantly, we also identify a signature of the IGP in the spin channel perpendicular to the field direction, which we interpret as a signature of Friedel oscillations of gapless spinons forming a Fermi surface. SOFIA/HAWC+ 154 $\mu$m Far-Infrared polarimetry observations of the well-studied edge-on galaxy NGC 891 are analyzed and compared to simple disk models with ordered (planar) and turbulent magnetic fields. The overall low magnitude and the narrow dispersion of fractional polarization observed in the disk require significant turbulence and a large number of turbulent decorrelation cells along the line-of-sight through the plane. Higher surface brightness regions along the major axis to either side of the nucleus show a further reduction in polarization and are consistent with a view tangent to a spiral feature in our disk models. The nucleus also has a similar low polarization, and this is inconsistent with our model spiral galaxy where the ordered magnetic field component would be nearly perpendicular to the line-of-sight through the nucleus on an edge-on view. A model with a barred spiral morphology with a magnetic field geometry derived from radio synchrotron observations of face-on barred spirals fits the data much better. There is clear evidence for a vertical field extending into the halo from one location in the disk coincident with a polarization null point seen in near-infrared polarimetry, probably due to a blowout caused by star formation. Although our observations were capable of detecting a vertical magnetic field geometry elsewhere in the halo, no clear signature was found. A reduced polarization due to a mix of planar and vertical fields in the dusty regions of the halo best explains our observations, but unusually significant turbulence cannot be ruled out., Comment: AJ, Accepted, In Press

Forming a hetero-interface is a materials-design strategy that can access an astronomically large phase space. However, the immense phase space necessitates a high-throughput approach for optimal interface design. Here we introduce a high-throughput computational framework, InterMatch, for efficiently predicting charge transfer, strain, and superlattice structure of an interface by leveraging the databases of individual bulk materials. Specifically, the algorithm reads in the lattice vectors, density of states, and the stiffness tensors for each material in their isolated form from the Materials Project. From these bulk properties, InterMatch estimates the interfacial properties. We benchmark InterMatch predictions for the charge transfer against experimental measurements and supercell density-functional theory calculations. We then use InterMatch to predict promising interface candidates for doping transition metal dichalcogenide MoSe$_2$. Finally, we explain experimental observation of factor of 10 variation in the supercell periodicity within a few microns in graphene/$\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ by exploring low energy superlattice structures as a function of twist angle using InterMatch. We anticipate our open-source InterMatch algorithm accelerating and guiding ever-growing interfacial design efforts. The kagome superconductors KV$_3$Sb$_5$, RbV$_3$Sb$_5$, and CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ are known to display charge density wave (CDW) order which impacts the topological characteristics of their electronic structure. Details of their structural ground states and how they evolve with temperature are revealed here using single crystal X-ray crystallographic refinements as a function of temperature, carried out with synchrotron radiation. The compounds KV$_3$Sb$_5$ and RbV$_3$Sb$_5$ present 2$\times$2$\times$2 superstructures in the $Fmmm$ space group with a staggered tri-hexagonal deformation of vanadium layers. CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ displays more complex structural evolution, whose details have been unravelled by applying machine learning methods to the scattering data. Upon cooling through the CDW transition, CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ displays a staged progression of ordering from a 2$\times$2$\times$1 supercell and a 2$\times$2$\times$2 supercell into a final 2$\times$2$\times$4 supercell that persists to $T$ = 11 K and exhibits an average structure where vanadium layers display both tri-hexagonal and Star of David patterns of deformations. Diffraction from CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ under pulsed magnetic fields up to $\mu_0H$ = 28 T suggest the real component of the CDW state is insensitive to external magnetic fields., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Fractionalization without time-reversal symmetry breaking is a long-sought-after goal in the study of correlated phenomena. The earlier proposal of correlated insulating states at $n \pm 1/3$ filling in twisted bilayer graphene and recent experimental observations of insulating states at those fillings strongly suggest that moir\'e graphene systems provide a new platform to realize time-reversal symmetric fractionalized states. However, the nature of fractional excitations and the effect of quantum fluctuation on the fractional correlated insulating states are unknown. We show that excitations of the fractional correlated insulator phases in the strong coupling limit carry fractional charges and exhibit fractonic restricted mobility. Upon introduction of quantum fluctuations, the resonance of ``lemniscate" structured operators drives the system into ``quantum lemniscate liquid (QLL)" or ``quantum lemniscate solid (QLS)". We find an emergent $U(1)\times U(1)$ 1-form symmetry unifies distinct motions of the fractionally charged excitations in the strong coupling limit and in the QLL phase while providing a new mechanism for fractional excitations in two-dimension. We predict emergent Luttinger liquid behavior upon dilute doping in the strong coupling limit due to restricted mobility and discuss implications at a general $n \pm 1/3$ filling., Comment: 6 + 13 pages, 3 + 14 figures

Twisted van der Waals multilayers are widely regarded as a rich platform to access novel electronic phases, thanks to the multiple degrees of freedom such as layer thickness and twist angle that allow control of their electronic and chemical properties. Here, we propose that the stacking domains that form naturally due to the relative twist between successive layers act as an additional "knob" for controlling the behavior of these systems, and report the emergence and engineering of stacking domain-dependent surface chemistry in twisted few-layer graphene. Using mid-infrared near-field optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy, we observe a selective adhesion of metallic nanoparticles and liquid water at the domains with rhombohedral stacking configurations of minimally twisted double bi- and tri-layer graphene. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the manipulation of nanoparticles located at certain stacking domains can locally reconfigure the moir\'e superlattice in their vicinity at the {\mu}m-scale. In addition, we report first-principles simulations of the energetics of adhesion of metal atoms and water molecules on the stacking domains in an attempt to elucidate the origin of the observed selective adhesion. Indistinguishability of particles is a fundamental principle of quantum mechanics. For all elementary and quasiparticles observed to date - including fermions, bosons, and Abelian anyons - this principle guarantees that the braiding of identical particles leaves the system unchanged. However, in two spatial dimensions, an intriguing possibility exists: braiding of non-Abelian anyons causes rotations in a space of topologically degenerate wavefunctions. Hence, it can change the observables of the system without violating the principle of indistinguishability. Despite the well developed mathematical description of non-Abelian anyons and numerous theoretical proposals, the experimental observation of their exchange statistics has remained elusive for decades. Controllable many-body quantum states generated on quantum processors offer another path for exploring these fundamental phenomena. While efforts on conventional solid-state platforms typically involve Hamiltonian dynamics of quasi-particles, superconducting quantum processors allow for directly manipulating the many-body wavefunction via unitary gates. Building on predictions that stabilizer codes can host projective non-Abelian Ising anyons, we implement a generalized stabilizer code and unitary protocol to create and braid them. This allows us to experimentally verify the fusion rules of the anyons and braid them to realize their statistics. We then study the prospect of employing the anyons for quantum computation and utilize braiding to create an entangled state of anyons encoding three logical qubits. Our work provides new insights about non-Abelian braiding and - through the future inclusion of error correction to achieve topological protection - could open a path toward fault-tolerant quantum computing.

Stabilizer codes allow for non-local encoding and processing of quantum information. Deformations of stabilizer surface codes introduce new and non-trivial geometry, in particular leading to emergence of long sought after objects known as projective Ising non-Abelian anyons. Braiding of such anyons is a key ingredient of topological quantum computation. We suggest a simple and systematic approach to construct effective unitary protocols for braiding, manipulation and readout of non-Abelian anyons and preparation of their entangled states. We generalize the surface code to a more generic graph with vertices of degree 2, 3 and 4. Our approach is based on the mapping of the stabilizer code defined on such a graph onto a model of Majorana fermions charged with respect to two emergent gauge fields. One gauge field is akin to the physical magnetic field. The other one is responsible for emergence of the non-Abelian anyonic statistics and has a purely geometric origin. This field arises from assigning certain rules of orientation on the graph known as the Kasteleyn orientation in the statistical theory of dimer coverings. Each 3-degree vertex on the graph carries the flux of this "Kasteleyn" field and hosts a non-Abelian anyon. In our approach all the experimentally relevant operators are unambiguously fixed by locality, unitarity and gauge invariance.
