Abstract The objective of this study is to develop and validate a noncontact, nondestructive inspection and imaging method for rapidly assessing the subsurface condition of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite structures. The method works on the principle of planar electrical capacitance tomography (ECT). Unlike conventional ECT systems, electrodes are arranged on a rectangular planar surface in the form of a grid. The volume on one side of the electrode plane is interrogated with an electric field, and the mutual capacitances between the electrodes are measured. The volumetric electrical permittivity distribution of the interrogated region is then reconstructed from the measured capacitance responses. In this work, an ECT image reconstruction algorithm was implemented, and a customized planar capacitive imaging system was prototyped. First, different objects were placed near the electrode array, and the corresponding volumetric change in electrical permittivity was successfully captured. Second, the planar ECT system was employed for detecting artificially introduced subsurface defects in 3D-printed objects. Third, CFRP specimens with different sizes of single-layer delamination were fabricated and subjected to ECT interrogation. The results confirmed that the planar ECT system could detect the location and size of delamination in CFRP panels. The accuracy and resolution of the planar ECT prototype were also characterized.

This study investigated the effects of Lycium chinense Mill (LCM) extract on obesity and diabetes, using both in vitro and high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity mouse models. We found that LCM notably enhanced glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) secretion in NCI-h716 cells from 411.4 ± 10.75 pg/mL to 411.4 ± 10.75 pg/mL compared to NT (78.0 ± 0.67 pg/mL) without causing cytotoxicity, implying the involvement of Protein Kinase A C (PKA C) and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in its action mechanism. LCM also decreased lipid droplets and lowered the expression of adipogenic and lipogenic indicators, such as Fatty Acid Synthase (FAS), Fatty Acid-Binding Protein 4 (FABP4), and Sterol Regulatory Element-Binding Protein 1c (SREBP1c), indicating the suppression of adipocyte differentiation and lipid accumulation. LCM administration to HFD mice resulted in significant weight loss (41.5 ± 3.3 g) compared to the HFD group (45.1 ± 1.8 g). In addition, improved glucose tolerance and serum lipid profiles demonstrated the ability to counteract obesity-related metabolic issues. Additionally, LCM exhibited hepatoprotective properties by reducing hepatic lipid accumulation and diminishing white adipose tissue mass and adipocyte size, thereby demonstrating its effectiveness against hepatic steatosis and adipocyte hypertrophy. These findings show that LCM can be efficiently used as a natural material to treat obesity and diabetes, providing a new approach for remedial and therapeutic purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is a plasticizer commonly used in blood bags. Despite its protective effects on red blood cell (RBC) storage, concerns about its reproductive toxicity exist. This study investigated the in vitro quality of RBC concentrates stored in bags using di(isononyl) cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylate (DINCH) as an alternative plasticizer. Methods: Using a pool-and-split study design, we produced 20 matched homogenous quintets of RBC concentrates in two DINCH bags and three DEHP bags with citrate phosphate dextrose adenine (CPDA-1) anticoagulant. RBC storage quality was assessed weekly for 35 days. Results: On day 35, the median hemolysis levels in the DINCH bags (0.297–0.342%) were marginally higher (p < 0.05) than the DEHP bags (0.204–0.240%). All DINCH bags showed <0.8% hemolysis. RBCs in the DINCH bags showed increased mean corpuscular volume and decreased eosin 5′ maleimide binding than in the DEHP bags. Higher pO2 and lower pCO2 levels in the DINCH bags indicated better gas permeability than in DEHP bags. Other metabolic parameters were comparable in both bags. Compared to DEHP, DINCH exhibited considerably lower levels of plasticizer leaching into blood bags. Conclusion: The quality of RBC concentrates stored for 35 days in DINCH-plasticized blood bags with CDPA-1 is generally comparable to those in DEHP bags. Hence, DINCH can be a viable alternative to DEHP in blood bags for nonleukoreduced RBC storage even without the use of next-generation additive solutions to improve RBC preservation quality. The quality of nonleukocyte-reduced RBC concentrates stored for 35 days in DINCH-plasticized blood bags with CDPA-1 is generally comparable to those in DEHP bags. The human clavicle's unique S-shaped, three-dimensional structure complicates fracture management. This study evaluated the anatomical conformity of pre-contoured anatomical plates using 3D-printed clavicle models. CT scans from 30 patients (15 males and 15 females) were used to create these models. Three brands of distal clavicle plate systems (Acumed, Synthes, and Arthrex) were tested for fit. Measurements included the distance from the distal end of the clavicle to the plate's lateral end, the gap between the clavicle and the plate, and the overhang distance. Results showed significant differences in clavicle length between sexes, with men having a mean length of 156.1 ± 7.6 mm and women 138.4 ± 4.3 mm, both with normal distribution (p > 0.05). The mean lateral distance was 7.9 ± 1.7 mm, and the mean medial gap was 3.6 ± 3.0 mm, showing no significant differences between products or sexes. The mean overhang distance was 5.8 ± 4.6 mm, with larger values in women for the Acumed (p = 0.037) and Arthrex (p = 0.000) plates. This paper discusses a non-destructive evaluation (NDE) technique for the detection of damage in composite aircraft structures following high energy wide area blunt impact (HEWABI) from ground service equipment (GSE), such as heavy cargo loaders and other heavy equipment. The test structures typically include skin, co-cured stringers, and C-frames that are bolt-connected onto the skin with shear ties. The inspection exploits the waveguide geometry of these structures by utilizing ultrasonic guided waves and a line scan approach. Both a contact prototype and a non-contact prototype were developed and tested on realistic test panels subjected to impact in the laboratory. The results are presented in terms of receiver operating characteristic curves that show excellent probability of detection with low false alarm rates for defects located in the panel skin and stringers.

Background: Moxibustion has been used in the treatment and prevention of obesity. However, there has been no systematic review or meta-analysis conducted on the use of moxibustion on obesity treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the role of moxibustion in the treatment of obesity. Methods: The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, EMBASE, and MEDLINE/PubMed databases were searched to identify all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated the effect of moxibustion on obesity. The primary outcome was body weight. The secondary outcomes were the body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). The risk of bias assessment and meta-analysis were conducted using the Cochrane Collaboration tool. Results: Eleven RCTs involving 761 participants were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. Other interventions that were included in the analyses were manual acupuncture, electroacupuncture, embedding therapy, herbal medicine, and diet control. Moxibustion combined with other interventions resulted in a significant improvement in body weight reduction (mean difference [MD] −3.32, 95% confidence interval [CI: −4.25 to −2.38]; I2 = 17%), BMI (MD −1.51, 95% CI [−1.88 to −1.14]; I2 = 76%), and WC (MD −2.82, 95% CI [−3.50 to −2.13]; I2 = 75%), but did not improve HC (MD −2.05, 95% CI [−4.21 to 0.11]; I2 = 0%) or WHR (MD −0.01, 95% CI [−0.03 to 0.01]; I2 = 57%). Conclusions: Moxibustion can be used with other interventions to improve body weight, BMI, and WC in people with obesity. However, the conclusions of this review should be cautiously applied to clinical practice because most of the included studies had a high or unclear risk of bias. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Evorpacept is a CD47-blocking agent currently being developed for the treatment of various cancers. Interference by evorpacept in pretransfusion compatibility testing has been reported at limited plasma concentrations. Although various mitigation strategies have been proposed, none are practical. This in vitro study assessed evorpacept-induced interference at extended concentrations and investigated the capability of a novel mitigation agent, Evo-NR. Methods: Antibody screening tests were performed on evorpacept-spiked plasma with (anti-E and anti-Jka) or without alloantibodies at evorpacept concentrations up to 2,000 μg/mL using manual gel cards and automated analyzers. Evorpacept-coated red blood cells (RBCs) (rr [ce/ce], Fy[a+b−], S−s+) were tested by direct antiglobulin testing (DAT) and antigen typing using anti-Fyb and anti-S reagents at indirect antiglobulin testing (IAT) phase. Evo-NR was used to resolve the interference in plasma and RBC samples. Flow cytometry was used to assess the mitigation effects. Results: Evorpacept-spiked plasma showed panreactive interference in antibody screening tests using manual gel cards (2+ to 3+) and automated analyzers (4+). A carryover effect was also observed in the automated analyzers. The use of a 3- to 6-fold molar excess of Evo-NR effectively resolved the interference in the plasma and enabled accurate alloantibody identification. Although the reduction in evorpacept binding to RBCs was identified via flow cytometry, Evo-NR was incapable of resolving the serologic interference observed in DAT and antigen typing at IAT phase. Discussion: Evorpacept showed constant panreactivity and a carryover effect at high concentrations. Evo-NR successfully resolved the interference in the plasma samples and could be considered a practical and efficient mitigation solution. The temperature dependence of magnetization, magnetic anisotropy, coercive field and the magnetodielectric coefficient of Cr2O3 (undoped) and Fe0.4Cr1.6O3 (doped) was experimentally investigated. Test data shows that the presence of Fe ions at the interstitial spaces of the Cr2O3 crystal lattice decreases the Neel Temperature by ∼80 K when compared to the undoped Cr 2O3. Also both the doped and undoped samples display maxima in magnetic anisotropy and magnetodielectric coefficient as a function of temperature. The maxima for the Fe doped samples occurs at a temperature approximately 80 K below the temperature measured for the Cr2O 3 samples, i.e. similar to the shift observed in the Neel Temperature. These results suggest that Neel Temperature, magnetic anisotropy, and the magnetodielectric coefficients are physically interrelated through competing principal exchange interactions and may provide a useful approach to search for new multiferroic materials. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.
