Confining materials within nanoscale volumes alters their physical and chemical properties, with positive consequences for energy storage, conversion, and catalysis. The pore structure and composition of scaffolds are essential variables for optimizing these properties, with carbon-based materials being preferred due to their tunable porous structures and chemical versatility. This study investigates the influence of surface functional groups on the dehydrogenation kinetics of nanoconfined NaAlH4 using zeolite-templated carbons (ZTCs). We focus on oxygen functional groups commonly present as intrinsic impurities on carbon scaffolds, analyzing three ZTC scaffolds to determine how their concentrations and configurations affect dehydrogenation behavior. Our findings reveal that carbonyl groups enhance charge transfer and destabilize Al–H bonds more effectively than ether or phenol groups. This indicates that the type of oxygen functional group is more critical than the quantity, highlighting the importance of properly tailoring oxygen defects to improve hydrogen storage performance in nanoconfined systems. Background/Objectives: Earlier detection of severe immune-related hematological adverse events (irHAEs) in cancer patients treated with a PD-1 or PD-L1 inhibitor is critical to improving treatment outcomes. The study aimed to develop a simple machine learning (ML) model for predicting irHAEs associated with PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors. Methods: We utilized the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership–Common Data Model based on electronic medical records from a tertiary (KHMC) and a secondary (KHNMC) hospital in South Korea. Severe irHAEs were defined as Grades 3–5 by the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (version 5.0). The predictive model was developed using the KHMC dataset, and then cross-validated against an independent cohort (KHNMC). The full ML models were then simplified by selecting critical features based on the feature importance values (FIVs). Results: Overall, 397 and 255 patients were included in the primary (KHMC) and cross-validation (KHNMC) cohort, respectively. Among the tested ML algorithms, random forest achieved the highest accuracy (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve [AUROC] 0.88 for both cohorts). Parsimonious models reduced to 50% FIVs of the full models showed comparable performance to the full models (AUROC 0.83–0.86, p > 0.05). The KHMC and KHNMC parsimonious models shared common predictive features including furosemide, oxygen gas, piperacillin/tazobactam, and acetylcysteine. Conclusions: Considering the simplicity and adequate predictive performance, our simplified ML models might be easily implemented in clinical practice with broad applicability. Our model might enhance early diagnostic screening of irHAEs induced by PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors, contributing to minimizing the risk of severe irHAEs and improving the effectiveness of cancer immunotherapy. Paranasal sinus surgery, a common treatment for chronic rhinosinusitis, requires exceptional precision due to the proximity of critical anatomical structures. To ensure accurate instrument control and clear visualization of the surgical site, surgeons utilize computer-aided surgical navigation (CSN). A key component of CSN is the registration process, which is traditionally reliant on manual or marker-based techniques. However, there is a growing shift toward marker-less registration methods. In previous work, we investigated a mesh-based registration approach using a Mixed Reality Head-Mounted Display (MR-HMD), specifically the Microsoft HoloLens 2. However, this method faced limitations, including depth holes and invalid values. These issues stemmed from the device's low-resolution camera specifications and the 3D projection steps required to upscale RGB camera spaces. In this study, we propose a novel automated marker-less registration method leveraging Neural Radiance Field (NeRF) technology with an MR-HMD. To address insufficient depth information in the previous approach, we utilize rendered-depth images generated by the trained NeRF model. We evaluated our method against two other techniques, including prior mesh-based registration, using a facial phantom and three participants. The results demonstrate our proposed method achieves at least a 0.873 mm (12%) improvement in registration accuracy compared to others. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effects of TiO2 nanotube (TNT) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) deposition onto titanium, which is widely used in dental implants, on Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) and preosteoblastic cells were evaluated. TNTs were formed through anodic oxidation on pure titanium, and rGO was deposited using an atmospheric plasma generator. The specimens used were divided into a control group of titanium specimens and three experimental groups: Group N (specimens with TNT formation), Group G (rGO-deposited specimens), and Group NG (specimens under rGO deposition after TNT formation). Adhesion of S. mutans to the surface was assessed after 24 h of culture using a crystal violet assay, while adhesion and proliferation of MC3T3-E1 cells, a mouse preosteoblastic cell line, were evaluated after 24 and 72 h through a water-soluble tetrazolium salt assay. TNT formation and rGO deposition on titanium decreased S. mutans adhesion (p < 0.05) and increased MC3T3-E1 cell adhesion and proliferation (p < 0.0083). In Group NG, S. mutans adhesion was the lowest (p < 0.05), while MC3T3-E1 cell proliferation was the highest (p < 0.0083). In this study, TNT formation and rGO deposition on a pure titanium surface inhibited the adhesion of S. mutans at an early stage and increased the initial adhesion and proliferation of preosteoblastic cells.
