7. A Case Study of Children's Interaction Types and Learning Motivation in Small Group Project-Based Learning Activities in a Mathematics Classroom

Abstract

As collaborative problem-solving skills are increasing in importance, Project-Based Learning (PBL) is being implemented in various ways, but the results differ depending on the participants. This study shows that the results of PBL depend on student interaction type and learning motivation. The difference in the levels of interaction and learning motivation between two groups of students utilizing different discussion processes was qualitatively explored. The participants in this study consisted of 8 students in the 6th grade of elementary school, and the intervention was conducted over the course of 10 lessons. The group for which the leader arbitrarily resolved conflicts had a type of inactive interaction and the level of motivation for learning was outside of the acceptable range compared to the group that took part in a democratic discussion. As the project progressed, it changed to a type of inactive interaction. Thus, the results suggest that the roles of individuals in a group should be adjusted to account for to the characteristics of PBL and the structure of the task; furthermore, an inquiry into how learning motivation changes according to social interactions with others should be conducted.

Abstract

Background: Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions (NDBIs) for young children with autism spectrum disorder commonly involve caregiver‐mediated approaches. However, to date, there is limited research on how caregivers' skills change, and, in turn, impact child outcomes. Methods: We evaluated the NDBI strategy use of 191 caregivers prior to participation in NDBIs (or control groups) across multiple randomized controlled trials, using the Measure of NDBI Strategy Implementation, Caregiver Change (MONSI‐CC). Clustering analyses were used to examine caregiver variability in NDBI strategy use at intervention entry. Generalized Linear Mixed Models were used to examine changes in caregiver strategy use over the course of intervention and its impact on changes in children's social communication. Results: Using clustering analysis, we found that caregivers' baseline skills fit four profiles: limited, emerging, variable, and consistent/high, with few demographic factors distinguishing these groups. Caregivers starting with limited or emerging skills improved in their strategy use with intervention. Caregivers starting with more skills (consistent/high or variable) maintained higher skills over intervention. Children of caregivers in these groups who received target NDBIs improved in their social communication skills. Conclusions: Results suggested that caregiver skills improve through participation in NDBIs and may directly contribute to their children's outcomes, although more research on mediating factors is needed. Individualized approaches for caregivers and their children starting with differing skill profiles at intervention entry may be warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

36. Performance Evaluation of Low Thermal Bridging Drywall System with Separating Clips for C-Studs.

Abstract

Drywall systems comprising gypsum boards and steel C-studs are widely used due to their lightweight structure, rapid construction, and ease of installation. These systems must meet the required thermal insulation performance for their specific applications. However, metal C-studs penetrate the insulation layer at intervals, leading to additional heat loss, reduced thermal insulation performance, and lower indoor surface temperatures, which can result in condensation and mold growth. To address these issues, this study proposes a drywall system with low thermal bridging studs made up of two small-sized studs and four or five separating clips made of reinforced plastic. These clips separate the studs to minimize heat transfer through metal elements, maintain structural stability despite the spacing between them, and facilitate easy assembly. The results from mock-up tests showed that the proposed system's thermal transmittance was 0.370 W/m2K, which is 28.8% lower than the 0.52 W/m2K observed with conventional C-studs. The proposed drywall system also met Korean regulations for acoustic insulation level 3 and the 2 h fire resistance criteria, similar to existing drywall systems with conventional C-studs. Moreover, the maximum and residual displacements were within an acceptable range for a horizontal load of 3000 N applied vertically to the non-load-bearing wall. Building energy analysis indicated that using the proposed drywall adjacent to unconditioned spaces could reduce the annual heating and cooling load by 2.5–3.0%, despite a 1.5–1.9% increase in the annual cooling load. The annual heating load decreased by 4.8–5.9% under infiltration rates of 0.5 to 1.5 air changes per hour for adjacent unconditioned spaces, making this drywall system's improved insulation quality crucial for achieving heating-dominant zero-energy buildings. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of an aspiration prevention quality improvement (QI) program that utilizes the Gugging Swallowing Screen (GUSS) in older patients.Patients and Methods: This retrospective cohort study was conducted in an acute medical care unit of a tertiary hospital in South Korea. The study used one-to-one propensity matching and included 96 patients who received the QI program and 96 who did not. All patients were aged 65 years or older and had risk factors for aspiration, including neurological and non-neurological disorders, neuromuscular disorders, impaired airway defenses, and dysphagia due to esophageal or gastrointestinal disorders. The primary outcomes included the duration of the fasting period during hospitalization, changes in nutritional status before admission and at discharge, in-hospital mortality, and readmission due to pneumonia within 90 days.Results: Fasting period, changes in weight and albumin levels upon discharge after hospitalization, and length of stay did not differ significantly between patients in the GUSS and non-GUSS groups.
