Abstract

Cantilever-free scanning probe microscopy has enormous potential for high-throughput topography imaging using parallel probe arrays. However, the current imaging mechanism of the cantilever-free tip architecture hardly considers the efficiency of the detection method regarding precision and bandwidth, which could be a bottleneck to expanding the application of this measurement system. In this communication, we present a contact resistance-based cantilever-free imaging system using radio frequency (RF) reflectometry. RF reflectometry measurements provide sensitive detection of the contact resistance with a wide bandwidth, enabling sub-micrometer-scale topography imaging. We demonstrated our imaging system using a carbon black-polydimethylsiloxane composite tip with a custom-built RF reflectometry setup. The proof-of-concept system achieved a resolution of 230 nm and a bandwidth of the detection system of approximately 8.5 MHz, validating the feasibility of the imaging technique for potential high-throughput cantilever-free scanning probe microscopy. Abstract

Despite the remarkable progress in the development of sweat sensors, self‐powered sweat‐responsive sensing displays that detect sweat in electric signals with simultaneous and direct visualization of the sweat is rarely demonstrated. Here, a self‐powered sweat‐responsive structural color (SC) display enabled by ionomer‐doped block copolymer (BCP) photonic crystals (PCs) is presented. The sweat‐responsive BCP PC is developed by employing a cross‐linking single‐mobile ionomer (SMI) with mobile anions anchored to immobile polycations to a 1‐D BCP PC. The hydrophobic SMI‐doped BCP PC is mechanically robust as well as water and temperature‐resistive, exhibiting ionomer concentration‐dependent full visible SCs. Moreover, the mobile anions periodically confined in the SMI‐doped BCP PC harvest triboelectric energy, giving rise to a high‐power density of ≈0.774 Mw cm−2. Cation‐sensitive SC variation is observed in the SMI‐doped BCP PC, allowing the visualization of sweat containing various cations. A skin‐patchable self‐powered sweat‐responsive display is demonstrated in which kirigami‐patterned SMI‐doped BCP PC incorporated in the display can withstand up to 50% strain during exercise. Sweat from the exercise is visualized via SC display and measured using both ionic resistance changes and triboelectric signals. In addition, the integration of sweat sensing membrane into SMI‐doped BCP PC enables the quantification of sweat. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Despite great advances in stimuli‐interactive displays, which can directly visualize pressure, temperature, and humidity, a single interactive display platform capable of quantitatively discriminating the dynamic variation of two stimuli has yet to be developed. Here, a tandem interactive sensing display demonstrates not only direct visualization of both pressure and temperature but also the quantitative de‐convolution of these two simultaneously varied stimuli. The tandem display consists of five polymer layers vertically stacked on a transparent substrate: a temperature‐responsive ionic polymer, field‐induced blue light‐emitting unit (1), conductive polymer electrode with a parallel gap, field‐induced orange‐light‐emitting unit (2), and topologically structured pressure‐responsive layer. Impedance change of the responsive layers upon dynamic temperature and pressure is monitored simultaneously, providing stimuli‐interactive electroluminescence of light‐emitting units (1) and (2), respectively, when an alternating current (AC) field is applied between two polymer electrodes. Dynamic and simultaneous variation of temperature, 30–80 °C, and pressure, 0.5–20 kPa, are conveniently mapped in 3D coordinates of light intensity (z‐axis) and color (x‐y plane), producing a 2D contour surface plot. This provides an efficient and quantitative de‐convolution of unknown combinations of temperature and pressure stimuli. Abstract

Simultaneous sensing and visualization of pressure provides a useful platform to obtain information about a pressurizing object, but the fabrication of such interactive displays at the single-device level remains challenging. Here, we present a pressure responsive electroluminescent (EL) display that allows for both sensing and visualization of pressure. Our device is based on a two-terminal capacitor with six constituent layers: top electrode/insulator/hole injection layer/emissive layer/electron transport layer/bottom electrode. Light emission upon exposure to an alternating current field between two electrodes is controlled by the capacitance change of the insulator arising from the pressure applied on top. Besides capacitive pressure sensing, our EL display allows for direct visualization of the static and dynamic information of position, shape, and size of a pressurizing object on a single-device platform. Monitoring the pressurized area of an elastomeric hemisphere on a device by EL enables quantitative estimation of the Young’s modulus of the elastomer, offering a new and facile characterization method for the mechanical properties of soft materials.
