Search

Measuring the spin structure of protons and neutrons tests our understanding of how they arise from quarks and gluons, the fundamental building blocks of nuclear matter. At long distances the coupling constant of the strong interaction becomes large, requiring non-perturbative methods to calculate quantum chromodynamics processes, such as lattice gauge theory or effective field theories. Here we report proton spin structure measurements from scattering a polarized electron beam off polarized protons. The spin-dependent cross-sections were measured at large distances, corresponding to the region of low momentum transfer squared between 0.012 and 1.0 GeV$^2$. This kinematic range provides unique tests of chiral effective field theory predictions. Our results show that a complete description of the nucleon spin remains elusive, and call for further theoretical works, e.g. in lattice quantum chromodynamics. Finally, our data extrapolated to the photon point agree with the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule, a fundamental prediction of quantum field theory that relates the anomalous magnetic moment of the proton to its integrated spin-dependent cross-sections., Comment: Published version. 10 pages, 5 figures. 20 pages of supplementary material (data tables and a figure)

The quark structure of the $f_2(1270)$ meson has, for many years, been assumed to be a pure quark-antiquark ($q\bar{q}$) resonance with quantum numbers $J^{PC} = 2^{++}$. Recently, it was proposed that the $f_2(1270)$ is a molecular state made from the attractive interaction of two $\rho$-mesons. Such a state would be expected to decay strongly to final states with charged pions, due to the dominant decay $\rho \to \pi^+ \pi^-$, whereas decay to two neutral pions would likely be suppressed. Here, we measure for the first time the reaction $\gamma p \to \pi^0 \pi^0 p$, using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab for incident beam energies between 3.6-5.4~GeV. Differential cross sections, $d\sigma / dt$, for $f_2(1270)$ photoproduction are extracted with good precision, due to low backgrounds, and are compared with theoretical calculations., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

A first measurement of the longitudinal beam spin asymmetry ALU in the semi-inclusive electroproduction of pairs of charged pions is reported. ALU is a higher-twist observable and offers the cleanest access to the nucleon twist-3 parton distribution function e(x). Data have been collected in the Hall-B at Jefferson Lab by impinging a 5.498 GeV electron beam on a liquid-hydrogen target, and reconstructing the scattered electron and the pion pair with the CLAS detector. One-dimensional projections of the sin(phiR) moments of ALU are extracted for the kinematic variables of interest in the valence quark region. The understanding of di-hadron production is essential for the interpretation of observables in single hadron production in semi-inclusive DIS, and pioneering measurements of single spin asymmetries in di-hadron production open a new avenue in studies of QCD dynamics.

We have measured beam-spin asymmetries to extract the $\sin\phi$ moment $A_{LU}^{\sin\phi}$ from the hard exclusive $\vec{e} p \to e^\prime n \pi^+$ reaction above the resonance region, for the first time with nearly full coverage from forward to backward angles in the center-of-mass. The $A_{LU}^{\sin\phi}$ moment has been measured up to 6.6 GeV$^{2}$ in $-t$, covering the kinematic regimes of Generalized Parton Distributions (GPD) and baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDA) at the same time. The experimental results in very forward kinematics demonstrate the sensitivity to chiral-odd and chiral-even GPDs. In very backward kinematics where the TDA framework is applicable, we found $A_{LU}^{\sin\phi}$ to be negative, while a sign change was observed near 90$^\circ$ in the center-of-mass. The unique results presented in this paper will provide critical constraints to establish reaction mechanisms that can help to further develop the GPD and TDA frameworks.

Photoproduction cross sections are reported for the reaction $\gamma p\to p\eta$ using energy-tagged photons and the CLAS spectrometer at Jefferson Laboratory. The $\eta$ mesons are detected in their dominant charged decay mode, $\eta\to \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$, and results on differential cross sections are presented for incident photon energies between 1.2 and 4.7 GeV. These new $\eta$ photoproduction data are consistent with earlier CLAS results but extend the energy range beyond the nucleon resonance region into the Regge regime. The normalized angular distributions are also compared with the experimental results from several other experiments, and with predictions of $\eta$ MAID\,2018 and the latest solution of the Bonn-Gatchina coupled-channel analysis. Differential cross sections $d\sigma/dt$ are presented for incident photon energies $E_\gamma > 2.9$ GeV ($W > 2.5$ GeV), and compared with predictions which are based on Regge trajectories exchange in the $t$-channel (Regge models). The strong nuclear interaction between nucleons (protons and neutrons) is the effective force that holds the atomic nucleus together. This force stems from fundamental interactions between quarks and gluons (the constituents of nucleons) that are described by the equations of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). However, as these equations cannot be solved directly, physicists resort to describing nuclear interactions using effective models that are well constrained at typical inter-nucleon distances in nuclei but not at shorter distances. This limits our ability to describe high-density nuclear matter such as in the cores of neutron stars. Here we use high-energy electron scattering measurements that isolate nucleon pairs in short-distance, high-momentum configurations thereby accessing a kinematical regime that has not been previously explored by experiments, corresponding to relative momenta above 400 MeV/c. As the relative momentum between two nucleons increases and their separation thereby decreases, we observe a transition from a spin-dependent tensor-force to a predominantly spin-independent scalar-force. These results demonstrate the power of using such measurements to study the nuclear interaction at short-distances and also support the use of point-like nucleons with two- and three-body effective interactions to describe nuclear systems up to densities several times higher than the central density of atomic nuclei., Comment: Total 26 pages, 13 figures. The exclusive electroproduction process $ep \rightarrow e'p'\pi^{0}$ was measured in the range of photon virtualities $Q^{2} = 0.4 - 1.0$~GeV$^{2}$ and the invariant mass range of the $p\pi^{0}$ system of $W = 1.1 - 1.8$~GeV. These kinematics are covered in exclusive $\pi^{0}$ electroproduction off the proton with nearly complete angular coverage in the $p\pi^{0}$ center-of-mass system and with high statistical accuracy. Nearly 36000 cross section points were measured, and the structure functions $\sigma_T+\epsilon\sigma_L$, $\sigma_{LT}$, and $\sigma_{TT}$, were extracted via fitting the $\phi_{\pi^{0}}$ dependence of the cross section. A Legendre polynomial expansion analysis demonstrates the sensitivity of our data to high-lying $N^*$ and $\Delta^{*}$ resonances with $M~>~1.6$ GeV. As part of a broad effort to determine the electrocouplings of the $N^{*}$ and $\Delta^{*}$ resonances using both single- and double-pion electroproduction, this dataset is crucial for the reliable extraction of the high-lying resonance electrocouplings from the combined isospin analysis of the $N \pi$ and $\pi^{+}\pi^{-} p$ channels., Comment: 21 pages, 24 figures

In the past two decades, deeply virtual Compton scattering of electrons has been successfully used to advance our knowledge of the partonic structure of the free proton and investigate correlations between the transverse position and the longitudinal momentum of quarks inside the nucleon. Meanwhile, the structure of bound nucleons in nuclei has been studied in inclusive deep-inelastic lepton scattering experiments off nuclear targets, showing a significant difference in longitudinal momentum distribution of quarks inside the bound nucleon, known as the EMC effect. In this work, we report the first beam spin asymmetry (BSA) measurement of exclusive deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) off a proton bound in $^4$He. The data used here were accumulated using a $6$ GeV longitudinally polarized electron beam incident on a pressurized $^4$He gaseous target placed within the CLAS spectrometer in Hall-B at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The azimuthal angle ($\phi$) dependence of the BSA was studied in a wide range of virtual photon and scattered proton kinematics. The $Q^2$, $x_B$, and t dependencies of the BSA on the bound proton are compared with those on the free proton. In the whole kinematical region of our measurements, the BSA on the bound proton is smaller by 20\% to 40\%, indicating possible medium modification of its partonic structure.

We present a simple but general treatment of neutrino oscillations in the framework of quantum mechanics using plane waves and intuitive wave packet principles when necessary. We have numerically computed survival probabilities of solar neutrinos interacting with matter via MSW mechanism in the full three generation formalism with $\Delta m^2_{23}=2.2\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$. For $\theta_{13} \lesssim 30^{\circ}$, we confirm the two regions found in the two generation case, (1) with the most likelyhood, small $\sin^2(2\theta_{12}) \sim 0.006$, (2) with less likelyhood, large $\sin^2(2\theta_{12}) \gtrsim 0.5$. For $\theta_{13}\gtrsim 30^{\circ}$, we find an additional region, (3) with even less likelyhood, $10^{-5} < \Delta m^2_{12}< 10^{-4}$ eV$^2$ and/or $10^{-4} < \sin^2(2\theta_{12}) < 0.5$. The present status of the problem of neutrino mass, mixing and neutrino oscillations is briefly summarized. The evidence for oscillations of atmospheric neutrinos found recently in the Super-Kamiokande experiment is discussed. Indications in favor of neutrino oscillations obtained in solar neutrino experiments and in the accelerator LSND experiment are also considered. It is shown that the high-Delta m^2 part of the large mixing angle MSW solution of the solar neutrino problem is disfavored by the Super-Kamiokande data for low-energy upward-going events. We investigate possibilities for detecting heavy Majorana neutrinos ($N$'s) in $e^+e^-$ at LEP200 and future Linear Colliders. We concentrate on the processes where the pairs of intermediate heavy $N$'s produce a clear signal of total lepton number violation ($e^+e^- \to NN \to W^+l^-W^+l^{\prime -}$). Such a signal is not possible if the heavy neutrinos are of Dirac nature. Our approach is general in the sense that the intermediate $N$'s can be either on shell or off shell. We investigate the implications of a possible excess of the electron neutrino events in the Super-Kamiokande atmospheric neutrino experiment. The excess, if real, leads to constraints on the $\nu_\mu \leftrightarrow \nu_e$, $\nu_\mu \leftrightarrow \nu_\tau$ and $\nu_e \leftrightarrow \nu_\tau$ oscillation parameters. Specifically, the excess impies that $\nu_e - \nu_\mu$ and $\nu_\mu - \nu_\tau$ mixings are large and $\nu_e - \nu_\tau$ mixing is small. In the context of the minimal supersymmetric standard model, nonzero neutrino masses and mixing can be generated through renormalizable lepton number (and thus R-parity) violating operators. It is examined whether neutrino mass matrices from tree and one-loop contributions can account for two mass-squared differences and mixing angles that explain current experimental data. By accommodating, in particular, the solar and atmospheric neutrino data, we find interesting restrictions not only on the free parameters of the theory, such as lepton number violating couplings and soft-parameters, but also on the oscillation parameters of atmospheric neutrinos., Comment: Revtex, 16 pages. It is shown that the singular seesaw mechanism can simultaneously explain all the existing data supporting nonzero neutrino masses and mixing. The three mass-squared differences that are needed to accommodate the atmospheric neutrino data (through $\nu_\mu - \nu_s$ oscillation), the solar neutrino data via MSW mechanism (through $\nu_e - \nu_\tau$ oscillation), and the positive result of $\nu_\mu - \nu_e$ oscillation from LSND can be generated by this mechanism, whereas the vacuum oscillation solution to the solar neutrino problem is disfavored. We find that the electron and tau neutrino masses are of order $10^{-3}$ eV, and the muon neutrino and a sterile neutrino are almost maximally mixed to give a mass of order 1 eV. Two heavy sterile neutrinos have a mass of order 1 keV which can be obtained by the double seesaw mechanism with an intermediate mass scale $\sim 10^5$ GeV. We have studied the constraints imposed by the results of neutrino oscillation experiments on the effective Majorana mass || that characterizes the contribution of Majorana neutrino masses to the matrix element of neutrinoless double-beta decay. We have shown that in a general scheme with three Majorana neutrinos and a hierarchy of neutrino masses (which can be explained by the see-saw mechanism), the results of neutrino oscillation experiments imply rather strong constraints on the parameter ||. From the results of the first reactor long-baseline experiment CHOOZ and the Bugey experiment it follows that || < 3x10^{-2} eV if the largest mass-squared difference is smaller than 2 eV^2. Hence, we conclude that the observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay with a probability that corresponds to || > 10^{-1} eV would be a signal for a non-hierarchical neutrino mass spectrum and/or non-standard mechanisms of lepton number violation., Comment: 20 pages, including 4 figures

The temporal and spatial coherence widths of the microscopic process by which a neutrino is detected are incorporated in the quantum mechanical wave packet treatment of neutrino oscillations, confirming the observation of Kiers, Nussinov and Weiss that an accurate measurement of the energies of the particles participating in the detection process can increase the coherence length. However, the wave packet treatment presented here shows that the coherence length has an upper bound, determined by the neutrino energy and the mass-squared difference, beyond which the coherence of the oscillation process is lost., Comment: 7 pages, no figures. We have studied the position dependence of neutrino energy on the Kusenko-Segr\`{e} mechanism as an explanation of the proper motion of pulsars. The mechanism is also examined in three-generation mixing of neutrinos and in a non-adiabatic case. The position dependence of neutrino energy requires the higher value of magnetic field such as $B\sim 3\times 10^{15}$ Gauss in order to explain the observed proper motion of pulsars. It is shown that possible non-adiabatic processes decrease the neutrino momentum asymmetry, whereas an excess of electron neutrino flux over other flavor neutrino fluxes increases the neutrino momentum asymmetry. It is also shown that a general treatment with all three neutrinos does not modify the result of the two generation treatment if the standard neutrino mass hierarchy is assumed., Comment: 8 pages, REVTEX, no figures

In order to investigate when neutrinos cease to oscillate in the framework of quantum field theory, we have reexamined the wave packet treatment of neutrino oscillations by taking different sizes of the wave packets of the particles involved in the production and detection processes. The treatment is shown to be considerably simplified by using the Grimus-Stockinger theorem which enables us to carry out the integration over the momentum of the propagating neutrino. Our new results confirm the recent observation by Kiers, Nussinov and Weiss that a precise measurement of the energies of the particles involved in the detection process would increase the coherence length. A comprehensive formalism for the description of neutrino oscillations in the Earth in a general scheme with three massive neutrinos and the mass hierarchy m_1<nu_e, nu_mu<->nu_tau, nu_e<->nu_tau) could be large. Leading finite temperature effects on the neutrino decoupling temperature in the early Universe have been studied. We have incorporated modifications of the dispersion relation and the phase space distribution due to the presence of particles in the heat bath at temperature around MeV. Since both the expansion rate of the Universe and the interaction rate of a neutrino are reduced by finite temperature effects, it is necessary to calculate thermal corrections as precisely as possible in order to find the net effect on the neutrino decoupling temperature. We have performed such a calculation by using the finite temperature field theory. We calculate the finite temperature self-energy for neutrinos in the presence of a constant magnetic field in a medium in the unbroken $SU(2) \otimes U(1)$ model. We obtain the exact dispersion relation for such neutrinos and find that the thermal effective mass is modified by the magnetic field. The propagation of neutrinos in a gravitational field is studied. A method of calculating a covariant quantum-mechanical phase in a curved space-time is presented. The result is used to calculate gravitational effects on the neutrino oscillation in the presence of a gravitational field. We restrict our discussion to the case of the Schwartzschild metric. Specifically, the cases of the radial propagation and the non-radial propagation are considered. In this lecture we review some of the basic properties of neutrinos, in particular their mass and the oscillation behavior. First we discuss how to describe the neutrino mass. Then, under the assumption that neutrinos are massive and mixed, the fundamentals of the neutrino oscillations are discussed with emphasis on subtle aspects which have been overlooked in the past. We then review the terrestrial neutrino oscillation experiments in the framework of three generations of neutrinos with the standard mass hierarchy. The concepts of effective and dynamical neutrino mixing matrices are introduced in order to describe the behavior of neutrinos in matter. The former relates weak eigenstates to mass eigenstates, whereas the latter relates weak eigenstates to energy eigenstates in matter. It is shown that the dynamical mixing angles enable us to express the neutrino survival probability in the Sun without any resort to the Landau-Zener transition probability for the non-adiabatic process. Also discussed are effective CP violating phases that appear in the effective and dynamical mixing matrices in matter. We have considered short-baseline neutrino oscillations, tritium beta-decay and neutrinoless double-beta decay in two schemes with an inverted mass spectrum and mixing of three and four massive neutrino fields. We have analyzed the results of the latest experiments on the search for oscillations of terrestrial neutrinos and we have discussed the compatibility of the LSND indication in favor of neutrino oscillations with the results of the other experiments. We show in a simple and general way that matter effects do not contribute to the averaged value of the probabilities of transition of solar $\nu_e$'s into other states in the case of maximal mixing of any number of massive neutrinos. We also show that future solar neutrino experiments (Super-Kamiokande and SNO) will allow to test the model with maximal mixing of three massive neutrinos in a way that does not depend on the initial solar neutrino flux., Comment: RevTeX file, 11 pages including 1 figure. We have analyzed the results of the latest terrestrial neutrino oscillation experiments in the framework of a model with mixing of three massive neutrinos and a neutrino mass hierarchy ($ m_1 << m_2 << m_3 $). In this model, oscillations of the terrestrial neutrinos are characterized by three parameters, $ \Delta m^2 = m_3^2 - m_1^2 $ and the squared moduli of the two mixing matrix elements $U_{e3}$ and $U_{\mu3}$. Using the results of disappearance experiments and solar neutrino experiments, it is shown that only two regions of possible values of $|U_{e3}|^2$ and $|U_{\mu3}|^2$ are allowed: I. $|U_{e3}|^2$ and $|U_{\mu3}|^2$ are both small and II. $|U_{e3}|^2$ is small and $|U_{\mu3}|^2$ is large. If the mixing parameters are in the region I, $ \nu_\mu <-> \nu_e $ oscillations are suppressed. In this case the LSND indication in favor of $ \nu_\mu <-> \nu_e $ oscillations is not compatible with the negative results of all other experiments. If the mixing parameters are in the region II, $ \nu_e <-> \nu_\tau $ oscillations are strongly suppressed. If massive neutrinos are Majorana particles, our analysis shows that neutrinoless double-beta decay could be observed in the experiments of the next generation only if the mixing parameters are in the region I., Comment: RevTeX file, 26 pages including 9 figures. We have analyzed the results of reactor and accelerator neutrino oscillation experiments in a model with mixing of three neutrino fields and a neutrino mass hierarchy. It is shown that $ \nu_\mu \leftrightarrows \nu_e $ oscillations with $ 0.6 \le \Delta m^2 \le 100 \, \mathrm{eV}^2 $ and amplitude larger than $ 2 \times 10^{-3} $ are not compatible with the existing limits on neutrino oscillations if the non-diagonal elements of the mixing matrix are small. A scale-dependent cosmology is proposed in which the Robertson-Walker metric and the Einstein equation are modified in such a way that $\Omega_0$, $H_0$ and the age of the Universe all become scale-dependent. We study some observational consequences of a recently proposed scale--dependent cosmological model for an inhomogeneous Universe. In this model the Universe is pictured as being inside a highly dense and rapidly expanding shell with the underdense center. For nearby objects ($z \ll 1$), the linear Hubble diagram is shown to remain valid even in this model, which has been demonstrated both analytically and numerically. For large $z$, we present some numerical results of the redshift--luminosity distance relation and the behavior of the mass density as a function of the redshift. It is shown that the Hubble diagram in this model for a locally $open$ Universe ($\Omega(t_0, r \sim 0)=0.1$) resembles that of the $flat$ Friedmann cosmology. This implies that study of the Hubble diagram cannot uniquely determine the value of $q_0$ or $\Omega_0$ in a model--independent way. Motivated by a recent rather surprising conclusion based on the 1992 PDG data on the pion, kaon and lepton decays that if three generations of neutrinos are assumed to be massive and mixed, the heaviest neutrino, $\nu_3$, could have a mass in the range, $155~\mbox{MeV} \lsim m_3 \lsim 225~\mbox{MeV}$, we have analyzed the latest 1995 data on the leptonic decays of pion, $\mu$ and $\tau$ with the assumption that three generations of neutrinos are massive and mixed. It is shown that when the radiative corrections are included and the constraint {}from partial decay widths is imposed, the 1995 data are consistent with three massless neutrinos with no mixing. Various limits on the neutrino mass and mixing angle implied by the 1995 data are presented together with a critique of the previous analysis., Comment: REVTeX file, 20 pages and 10 figures (not included).
