For parents providing care for people living with disabilities, future care provision is an inevitable concern. Migrant parents are often faced with "dual challenges", not only as parents of an individual living with disabilities but also as migrants, creating immediate or additional barriers to their engagement in the planning process. This study explores the impact of cultural differences and how they shape the future care plans of Korean migrant parents providing care for individuals living with disabilities. Applying a qualitative approach, this study conducted semistructured interviews with Korean migrant parents in New Zealand (n=8) and professionals working with them (n=10). The collected data were analysed using the content analysis method. The findings revealed a strong emphasis on familism and cultural barriers experienced by migrant families that negatively affect the planning process. For future care planning to take its place as a conventional care phase, some political and practical recommendations are presented. Future care provision planning is a pervasive concern for parents providing care for individuals living with disabilities; thus, it must take its place as a conventional phase of care. The impact of cultural differences and the values attached need to be taken into consideration in policy making and social work practice to elevate the level of involvement in the future care planning process among migrant families. Although research has shown that older nursing home residents can benefit from caring relationships with nurse aides, few studies have explored their dyadic, evolving relationship dynamics. Using a dyadic perspective, this study simultaneously explores caring relationships among older residents and nurse aides in Shanghai. In a government-sponsored nursing home in Shanghai, 20 matched resident–nurse aide dyads participated in semi-structured, in-depth interviews (N = 40). We performed thematic analysis to interpret and conceptualise the evolving caring relationships within dyads. Four types emerged during the evolution of caring relationships across the 20 dyads: (a) sharing strong rapport, (b) respecting each other, (c) hesitant responding, and (d) keeping emotional distance. Upon placement, all the residents kept emotional distance from nurse aides, and their assigned nurse aides provided care-giving by following nursing home regulations. As time passed, nurse aides began to create a family environment and tried to interact with residents on an emotional level; however, residents' attitudes varied. The caring relationships in some dyads evolved as rapport and respect emerged, while others remained hesitant and distant. This suggests that residents and nurse aides prioritised caring relationships differently in terms of autonomy preservation and safety protection, respectively. This article introduces a Buddhist Sutra about the deep kindness of mothers and ways of repaying mothers' kindness. The Sutra has been used to teach children about mothers' kindness and the obligation to repay to their mothers in their old age. It contains discourses about 10 types of kindness that a mother bestows on her child and how to repay the kindness in her old age. The paper discusses the profound nature of mothers' kindness, the way of repaying the kindness, the reciprocal caring relationship between the mother and the child, the status of mothers in Buddhism, and implications for aging.

There has been little research on how young people respect, or disrespect, older adults. This study explored the ways in which young adults connote elder respect by utilizing two different forms of data. Based on quantitative data from a survey of 521 college students, a set of 11 behavioral forms of elder respect was obtained. Out of these forms, 6 were identified as most frequently practiced. Additionally, by interviewing the subjects, qualitative data based on narratives explicating the dynamic practice of elder respect were obtained, and factors that hold a central significance to the development of respectful behavior towards elders are identified. Implications of the findings from both types of the data and suggestions for future research are discussed. (Contains 2 tables.)

Using Andersen's behavioral model of service utilization, this study aimed to understand how predisposing, enabling, and need factors were associated with two types of service utilization among caregivers of people with dementia. Caregiver participants (N = 637) were from the Resources for Enhancing Alzheimer's Caregivers Health (REACH II) study. Binary logistic and linear regression analyses were conducted to predict whether participants used services and the frequency of such service utilization. Results showed that some enabling and need factors were significantly associated with both discretionary and non-discretionary service utilization. Results also indicated some need factors were significant factors of the frequency of use for both discretionary and non-discretionary services. In addition, being Hispanic or African American moderated the association between some enabling or needs factors and service utilization. Practice attention needs to be paid on several enabling and needs factors among Hispanic and African American caregivers of people with dementia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Providing care to individuals with dementia places burden on family caregivers, which may relate to depressive symptoms. Although leisure activities may serve as a coping resource to relieve caregiving stress, only a few studies exist on how leisure and depressive symptoms associate in dementia caregivers. Moreover, less is known about the role of gender in this relationship. Thus, this study examined the relationship among leisure activity, gender and depressive symptoms. Method: A cutoff score (≥10) on the short form of the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale was used to measure presence of depressive symptoms. Independent variables were frequency of engagement in and satisfaction with leisure activities. Results: Logistic regression analyses from 632 dementia caregivers in the Resources for Enhancing Alzheimer's Caregiver Health II Study showed that more frequent and higher satisfaction in leisure engagement were negatively related to having depressive symptoms. Moreover, the negative association between frequent leisure engagement and depressive symptoms was more pronounced among male caregivers. Conclusion: Providing respite care for dementia caregivers to engage in leisure can be a promising coping strategy for this population. Also, gender difference in leisure-depressive symptoms relationship suggests different support needed for male and female caregivers in addition to leisure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The objective of this article is to investigate the relationship between activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living, cognitive impairment, and depression among Japanese American elders. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 207 older Japanese Americans (68 years and older) was conducted in Los Angeles, California and Honolulu, Hawaii. Independent variables included activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living, and cognitive functioning. Age, gender, marital status, and income were also identified. Depression was the dependent variable. Results: Descriptive analyses were done to show group differences in terms of gender, age and marital status. Gender (male) and marital status (married) were the determinants of lower rates of depression. Lower rates of IADL and cognitive functioning were significant determinants of higher rates of depression among older Japanese Americans. Conclusions: This study provides empirical evidence that physical and cognitive functioning are directly associated with depression in older Japanese Americans. Social workers need to provide the services of ethnic-based via formal agencies in order to prevent depression of older Japanese Americans. Also, it is important to have sensitivity and competency to assess depressive symptoms and refer elders to an appropriate mental health agency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims to examine self-rated life satisfaction and describe its relationship with depression and socioeconomic status among older Chinese and Korean immigrants. A cross-sectional study of 175 older Chinese immigrants and 205 older Korean immigrants was conducted in Los Angeles County. The study found that depression was negatively associated with self-rated life satisfaction for both the Chinese and Korean groups. For older Chinese immigrants, depression was the only significant factor related to self-rated life satisfaction. However, for older Korean immigrants, age, education, and depression were significantly associated with self-rated life satisfaction. This study suggests empirical strategies to reduce depression among these populations, such as the importance of culturally-tailored programs. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Research has demonstrated a relationship between social support, cognitive function, and depression among older adults, yet fewer studies have explored this association with Japanese American elders. This study aims to examine depression and describe its relationship with social support, cognitive function, and socioeconomic condition among Japanese American elders. A cross-sectional study of 205 Japanese American elders was conducted in Honolulu and Los Angeles County. A hierarchical regression model was used with depression as a dependent variable and with independent variables such as social support, cognitive function, and socioeconomic status. The study found that social support and cognitive function were significantly associated with depression for Japanese American elders. Also age and education were significantly associated with depression. Based on the findings, the study indicates the importance of developing preventive strategies to reduce the depression issue using culturally tailored programs to the study population.
