- Abstract
In this essay, Kilpinen responds to Terry Gates, Scott Goble, and Pentti Maattanen, who have provided reviews of his dissertation book "The Enormous Fly-Wheel of Society." As the reviewers noted, the book attempts to make two points simultaneously, and it may be that this made its argument hard to follow. The first point, that thorough knowledge about pragmatist philosophy is a "conditio sine qua non" for the right appreciation of what is the enduring part of early American sociology, led to Kilpenen's sociological interpretation of the "pragmatist theory of action." Furthermore--and this is the second thesis of the book--the pragmatist interpretation of human action is not just one option among many for scholars to choose from, but, in Kilpenen's opinion, is the most viable at the moment.

Hans Joas's new book entitled 'The Creativity of Action' focuses on pragmatism and society based on the findings of research in biology to the humanities. One chapter of the book discusses the so-called 'metaphors of creativity' such as expression, production, revolution, life and intelligence and reconstruction. Joas also adopted two themes from pragmatist C.S. Pierce and incorporated it with his own theory of creativity. With this book, Joas shows that classical pragmatism and sociology provide a compatible pair for synthesis and comparison.

- Abstract
Human beings are creatures of habit. That only a being with habits could have a mind like ours is a recently established finding in cognitive science (Noë 2009). It supports the original thesis of classic pragmatism that human life as we know it would be impossible without habits. Pragmatism is a philosophy of action, but a curious one in that it refers to human doings by the term “habit,” and less by “action” (Kilpinen 2009a, 2009b). Having said this, one must hasten to make the next important point. In pragmatist discourse about action, the central term is old and established, but its underlying meaning is radically new; so new that it has never received its full due attention. Every school in philosophy and the human sciences is aware that the phenomenon of habit exists – i.e., repetitive action that operates before we have time for reflection, as David Hume once said (see Hume, David). In this sense the term is traceable to ancient Greece and medieval Scholasticism (Camic 1986). In modern times it has received an equivalent appellation: routine. A point that cannot be overemphasized is that this is not the pragmatist meaning of the term. The pragmatist meaning is more comprehensive and advanced, in which the habitual action process – which does not have to be merely repetitive – is, pace Hume, within the reach of reflection. Pragmatism maintains that these two phenomena, reflection and ongoing action, can overlap, even mix with each other. This does not concern merely everyday routines, but also those modes of action that traditionally have been taken to be the most important: the intelligent and the rational. According to pragmatism, we do not just slavishly follow our habitual routines, although this phenomenon is real and is to be included in the treatment of action. More importantly, we can be discursively aware of our own habits, even during their occurrence, distance ourselves from them, and objectify them for scrutiny. This is a novelty in the pra

This work purports to show the relevance of classical pragmatistic philosophy for sociology and social theory, from the historical as well as systematic point of view. It brings out that representatives of the pragmatistic tradition have developed a new interpretation about the basic nature of human action, one based on the idea of 'reflexive habituality', as it is called here. It maintains further that not only the philosophers but also some systematic social scientists of this tradition have held this view. Of the latters, Thorstein Veblen, William Thomas and Arthur Bentley are most notable names. It turns out that at the previous turn of the century there emerged in the United States a social theoretic tradition of its own, one that in many respects stands comparison with the classical tradition of sociology in Europe. The unifying ingredient in the former tradition is the pragmatistic interpretation of action, where action is understood as a habitual process, yet as a process guided by the self-reflexion of the acting subject. In the latter respect this interpretation of action comes close to those basic results that modern cognitive scientists have recently obtained. Accordingly, the pragmatistic interpretation of action is more general than the one that prevails in sociology and related fields, the one that has its starting point in the rationality of action. The pragmatistic interpretation does not contradict the latter one, but rather is able to embrace it as a special case. This is due to the fact that the pragmatistic interpretation of human rationality also is more general than the one known as the theory of 'rational choice'. All these important facts, however, are conspicuously absent in general histories of sociology and social theory. Accordingly, the present work puts forward the following three theses as the basic results that it has achieved: (i) In the history of sociology there is not one but two such traditions that deserve to be called classical. (ii) As regards the problem of action in sociological analysis, it is the American pragmatistic tradition that offers the more enduring alternative. (iii) The interpretation of the history of sociology that has its starting-point in the thought of Talcott Parsons has outlived its relevance. Työ esittääkin siten perustuloksinaan kolmea väittämää: (i) Sosiologian historiassa on, ei yksi vaan kaksi ajatteluperinnettä, joita tulee kutsua klassisiksi. (ii) Mitä tulee toiminnan yleiseen ongelmaan sosiologiassa, näistä kahdesta perinteestä Yhdysvaltain pragmatistinen traditio edustaa kestävämpää ajattelua. (iii) Talcott Parsonsin käsityksistä juurensa juontava vallitseva tulkinta sosiologian historiasta on kypsä romutettavaksi.

There have been comparative discussions about Thorstein Veblen and Max Weber before, but not quite from the most appropriate viewpoint. The present paper treats them as theorists of action, in social and economic analysis, and this perspective yields some interesting new findings. Both theorists are to be taken as participants in the great Methodenstreit in economics, 100 years ago, and it is Veblen who suggests a more radical solution to this dispute, he suggests its final abolishment. The main difference between Veblen and Weber is in their respective appreciations of the role of psychology in social analysis. Weber does not think it important, but in so thinking he misses the viewpoint of evolutionary psychology that Veblen endorses. Accordingly, both of these classical thinkers are to be considered as theorists of action, but so that it is Veblen who proffers a more general theory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This dissertation is an ethnographic study of the roles and meanings that ethnicity has for the daily life in Finnish male prisons. I study how ethnic and racial demarcations manifests in the prison environment and how they are used in steering social relations. Moreover, this is a study of equality in the societal institution that exercises the most coercive power over the people in it. The statistics demonstrate a twentyfold increase in the number of imprisoned foreign nationals since the beginning of the 1990s, and although this is only one indicator of the variety of ethnic backgrounds, the change in the prisoner population begs the question of what we know about the social reality of our prisons today. This research is situated within the tradition of sociological prison studies, which aim to comprehend social life in closed institutions. It draws from pragmatist philosophy, which has directed the focus on collective action in its specific context and on recognizing its creativity and fallibility. At its centre is the socially shared understanding of the prison everyday life. The ethnographic data was collected in three closed male prisons during nine months of fieldwork, including 68 interviews. First, I illustrate how ethnic and racial categories are constructed, acted out, and established in the prison material space. The spatial organization of social order has strong symbolic meaning that points to the borders, social segregation, and hierarchy of ethnic and racial categories. The segregation is maintained by violence, and it has concrete consequences for prisoners’ capacity to attend workshops and training during their sentences. I then show how the hierarchy of ethnic and racial categories is mediated by contextual stereotypes, which tie together ethnic prejudices and prisoner culture. The interconnection with prisoner culture, connects the ethnic stereotypes further with masculine ideals which affects prisoners’ masculine statuses. Ethnicity as externally defined categories and stereotypes is highly influential on social life in Finnish prisons. Ethnicity has, however, also meanings for internal understanding of collective identification and belonging. Ethnically and racially defined groups form distinct coping practices that come close to the idea of separate prisoner cultures. The Finnish ethnic majority members form the majority also of the prison population and these prisoners hold a privileged position both among prisoners and in the institution. Within institutional arrangements, religious, linguistic, and national minorities face various difficulties, which should be removed or relieved. Moreover, attention should be paid to the racist conduct of some officers. The meanings of ethnicity in social relations in prison are undergoing a constant process of change. Ethnic hierarchy is not an indigenous aspect of prisoner culture (or criminal subculture) and since it has no integral role in coping in prison environment, it is more malleable than many other aspects of prisoner culture. Furthermore, I claim that ethnic hierarchy poses a threat to the existence of one dominant prisoner culture. Finnish prisons can take two possible paths. In the first scenario, ethnic hierarchy remains rigid or becomes stronger, and prisoners who are excluded from the opportunities and prestige of the dominant prisoner culture form parallel cultures that become antagonist in relation to it. This scenario might be enhanced as the number of ethnic minority prisoners grows. In the second scenario, prisoners find their position equal in the institutional arrangements and within the prisoner community regardless of their ethnicity. In this case, there is no such pressure to create separate coping practices and challenge the existing social order. Thus, the hierarchical element of prisoner culture would be preserved, but the significance of ethnicity and racial distinctions in it diminishes. Aineistonkeruu sijoittui pääasiassa kahteen suljettuun miesten vankilaan. Haastatteluja on tehty yhteensä 68. Tutkimuksessani osoitan, miten etnisyyden merkitys vankien välisessä hierarkiassa on vähentynyt ja miten taustalla vaikuttaa erityisesti vangittujen henkilöiden elinpiirin muuttuminen vankilan ulkopuolella. Vaikka tämä muutos näyttäytyi tutkimuksen aineistonkeruun aikana voimakkaana, on tulevaisuutta vaikea ennustaa. Mahdolliset kehityskulut ja niiden seuraukset on tärkeää tunnistaa vankiloissa, jotta yksilöiden oikeudet yhdenvertaisuuteen toteutuvat ja jotta konflikteja vankiryhmien välillä voidaan ehkäistä.

- Abstract
This study offers an overall interpretation of the sociologist and anthropologist Edward Westermarck’s (1862–1939) moral and social theory. It focuses on the key elements of Westermarck’s theory of moral emotions as presented in The Origin and Development of the Moral Ideas (1906-08) and summarized in Ethical Relativity (1932), and examines the importance of his work for understanding and explaining a wide range of social and moral phenomena that may be observed in all social environments. The study has two main aims. First, it lays out the key features of Westermarck’s theory of moral judgement, the nature of retributive emotions in which moral judgements are based, and the various psychological and social elements influencing them. At the same time, it shows that Westermarck’s account of morality is an ambitious and wide-ranging analysis of the fundamentals of human social behaviour and social reality. By combining the moral-psychological and sociological aspects of Westermarck’s work, the study reconstructs his understanding of emotions, and the different forms of emotional contagion in particular, as the fundamental elements of human sociality. What emerges is that at the heart of Westermarck’s theory-building is his neglected account of sympathy, proving to be crucial to his understanding of morality and human social life. The second aim of this study is to examine Westermarck’s thought in the context of his main sources of inspiration, enabling a better understanding of his work. In this regard, it highlights the importance of Darwinian evolutionism to the different aspects of Westermarck’s project, especially to his approach to the human mind. In addition, the study demonstrates how Westermarck’s theory of moral emotions developed out of, and in response to, David Hume’s and Adam Smith’s moral philosophy, combining their views on human nature, moral sentiments, and sympathy with Darwinian evolutionary thinking. The first part of this work focuses on the central elements in Westermarck’s moral and social theory, especially with respect to the nature of moral emotions, the role of sympathy and society, reciprocity, the emergence and maintenance of moral norms, and moral responsibility. The remaining part of the study expands upon and deepens these discussions by looking at Westermarck’s theory of moral emotions in relation to the sentimentalist tradition in British moral philosophy, whose importance Westermarck himself emphasised as the background for his thinking. Today, his legacy serves as an example of sociological theory-building that is not organized around the dualisms of nature/culture and animal/human which penetrate much of the social sciences. The study demonstrates Westermarck’s sociological relevance and broadens the view of Westermarck as the forerunner of modern evolutionary approaches to morality. Väitöskirja tarjoaa kokonaistulkinnan sosiologi, antropologi Edvard Westermarckin (1862–1939) moraali- ja yhteiskuntateoriasta. Se keskittyy The Origin and Development of the Moral Ideas (1906–08) ja Ethical Relativity (1932) -teoksissa esitettyyn teoriaan moraalitunteista ja hänen tapaansa analysoida ja selittää kaikissa ihmisyhteisöissä havaittavia moraaliin liittyviä ilmiöitä. Tutkimuksella on kaksi päätavoitetta.

sosiologia - Abstract
Public and academic discussion of gambling has been characterised by numerous contradictions. Although definitions of gambling as a sinful activity or even as a crime are now things of the past, the contemporary debate on whether gamblinkö-g is actually a social problem, an individual problem, a socially beneficial activity or perhaps just another form of consumption has been heated. This study maintains that no such conclusive definition of the social role of gambling can be found because societies discuss gambling differently based on contextual conditions. The research question asks whether the understandings of gambling differ between two European societies, Finland and France, and if so, how these differences are manifested. To answer this question a comparative study has been conducted. The research data consist of group interviews conducted among gamblers in Finland and in France, along with legal texts that regulate gambling in each country. Finland and France were chosen for this study owing to practical constraints but also to represent two European countries with differing gambling traditions but with similar overall availability of gambling opportunities. This made it possible to analyse institutional differences related to provision and legislation, as well as to compare cultural differences related to habits of thought and deep cultural structures. The study argues that social contexts influence not only the kind of gambling offers made available, but also how gambling is discussed, how it is justified, how it is understood and even how ensuing problems are conceptualised. Sociological theory is used to show that the way we understand social concepts such as gambling is specific to a particular cultural and institutional context. The results show that Finland and France differ in terms of how their gambling legislation has been justified and in how gamblers themselves discuss the activity. Differences were found in relation to what was considered an acceptable reason to gamble, what was considered the cause of problem gambling and how well the gambling offers of their respective countries were accepted. It is argued here that these differences reflect separate historical traditions of gambling, varying institutional organisations providing gambling opportunities, cultural differences in how blame is assigned, and varying conceptualisations of individuality in Finland and France. The analysis supports the hypothesis, showing that the way gambling is understood depends on the social context. The comparative analysis also demonstrates that gambling is a social issue and should be treated as such when its consequences, its availability or its importance to societies are discussed. Kysymykseen on vastattu kvalitatiivisin menetelmin.

sociology ,sociologi ,sosiologia - Abstract
Pragmatism has sometimes been taken as a catchphrase for epistemological stances in which anything goes. However, other authors argue that the real novelty and contribution of this tradition has to do with its view of action as the context in which all things human take place. Thus, it is action rather than, for example, discourses that should be our starting point in social theory. The introductory section of the book situates pragmatism (especially the ideas of G. H. Mead and John Dewey) within the field and tradition of social theory. This introductory also contextualizes the main core of the book which consists of four chapters. Two of these chapters have been published as articles in scientific journals and one in an edited book. All of them discuss the core problem of social theory: how is action related to social structures (and vice versa)? The argument is that habitual action is the explanation for the emergence of social structures from our action. Action produces structures and social reproduction takes place when action is habitualized; that is, when we develop social dispositions to act in a certain manner in familiar environments. This also means that even though the physical environment is the same for all of us, our habits structure it into different kinds of action possibilities. Each chapter highlights these general insights from different angles. Practice theory has gained momentum in recent years and it has many commonalities with pragmatism because both highlight the situated and corporeal character of human activity. One famous proponent of practice theory is Margaret Archer who has argued that the pragmatism of G. H. Mead leads to an oversocialized conception of selfhood. Mead does indeed present a socialized view of selfhood but this is a meta-sociological argument rather than a substantial sociological claim. Accordingly, one can argue that in this general sense intersubjectivity precedes subjectivity and not the other way around. Such a view does not indicate that our social relation would necessarily "colonize" individual action because there is a place for internal conversations (in Archer s terminology); it is especially in those phases of action where it meets obstacles due to the changes of the environment. The second issue discussed has the background assumption that social structures can fruitfully be conceptualized as institutions. A general classification of different institution theories is presented and it is argued that there is a need for a habitual theory of institutions due to the problems associated with these other theories. So-called habitual institutionalism accounts for institutions in terms of established and prevalent social dispositions that structure our social interactions. The germs of this institution theory can be found in the work of Thorstein Veblen. Since Veblen s times, these ideas have been discussed for example, by the economist Geoffrey M. Hodgson. His ideas on the evolution of institutions are presented but a critical stance is taken towards his tendency of defining institutions with the help of rules because rules are not always present in institutions. Accordingly, habitual action is the most basic but by no means the only aspect of institutional reproduction. The third chapter deals with theme of action and structures in the context of Pierre Bourdieu s thought. Bourdieu s term habitus refers to a system of dispositions which structure social fields. It is argued that habits come close to the concept of habitus in the sense that the latter consists of particular kinds of habits; those that are related to the reproduction of socioeconomic positions. Habits are thus constituents of a general theory of societal reproduction whereas habitus is a systematic combination of socioeconomic habits. The fourth theme relates to issues of social change and development. The capabilities approach has been associated with the name of Amartya Sen, for example, and it underscores problems inhering in economistic ways of evaluating social development. However, Sen s argument has some theoretical problems. For example, his theory cannot adequately confront the problem of relativism. In addition, Sen s discussion lacks also a theory of the role of the public. With the help of arguments derived from pragmatism, one gets an action-based, socially constituted view of freedom in which the role of the public is essential. In general, it is argued that a socially constituted view of agency does not necessarily to lead to pessimistic conclusions about the freedom of action. Esimerkiksi taloustieteen nobelisti Amartya Sen on korostanut tätä näkökohtaa. Senin teoriassa on kuitenkin ongelmia, sillä se ei kunnolla tarkastele relativismin ongelmaa eikä sitä, mikä on julkisen keskustelun rooli kehityksen arvioimisessa. Klassisten pragmatistien, G. H. Meadin ja John Deweyn argumentteja yhdistelemällä voidaan muodostaa näkemys, jossa toimintamahdollisuuksien voimakas riippuvuus sosiaalisesta kontekstista myönnetään, mutta jossa ei kuitenkaan päädytä pessimistisiin näkemyksiin toiminnan vapausasteista.
