The karyotypic characteristics of chub, Squalius cephalus have been investigated by examining metaphase chromosomes spreads obtained from gill and kidney tissues. The fish used in the study were caught with fishing nets from Dumlu Stream, one of the main tributaries of the Karasu River. The live fish were transported to the laboratory, kept in a well aerated aquarium before analysis and then were injected intraperitoneally with doses of phytohemagglutinin, 0.01 ml.g^-1 BW of 1% solution with 48-h interval to induce cell divisions. At the end of the period, the fish were injected intraperitoneally with doses of colchicine (0.01 ml.g-1 BW of 6% solution) and left for 3 hours before anesthesia and sacrificing. The best treatment parameters for preparing good metaphase chromosome spreads from the gill and kidney cells were performed as hypotonic (0.075 M KCl) treatment for 50 minutes, fixation with cold Carnoy solution at 3:1 ratio (methanol: acetic acid) and a concentration of 5% Giemsa for 35 minutes. The diploid chromosome number of this species was 2n = 50. The fundamental arm number (FN) was 92. The karyotypes were composed of 5 metacentric, 11 submetacentric, 5 subtelocentric and 4 acrocentric chromosome pairs (10 M + 22 SM + 10 ST + 8 A). No sex chromosomes were cytologically detected in this fish.

Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to define ideal cutoff thresholds for the pretreatment CA 19-9 and SIRI measurements, individually. The associations between the PCPI groups and progression-free- (PFS) and overall survival (OS) comprised the respective primary and secondary endpoints.Results: The ROC curve analysis distinguished the respective rounded optimal cutoffs at 91 U/m/L (< versus ≥ 90) and 1.8 (< versus ≥ 1.8) for CA 19-9 and SIRI, arranging the study cohort into two significantly different survival groups for each, with resultant four likely groups: Group-1: CA 19-9< 90 U/m/L and SIRI< 1.8, Group-2: CA 19-9< 90 U/m/L but SIRI≥ 1.8, Group-3: CA 19-9≥ 90 U/m/L but SIRI< 1.8, and Group-4: CA 19-9≥ 90 U/m/L and SIRI≥ 1.8. Since the PFS (P=0.79) and OS (P=0.86) estimates of the groups 2 and 3 were statistically indistinct, we merged them as one group and created the novel three-tiered PCPI: PCPI-1: CA 19-9< 90 U/m/L and SIRI< 1.8, PCPI-2: CA 19-9< 90 U/m/L but SIRI≥ 1.8 or CA 19-9≥ 90 U/m/L but SIRI< 1.8, and PCPI-3: CA 19-9≥ 90 U/m/L and SIRI≥ 1.8, respectively. Comparative analyses unveiled that the PCPI-1 and PCPI-3 groups had the respective best and worst PFS (17.0 versus 7.5 versus 4.4 months; P< 0.001) and OS (26.1 versus 15.1 versus 7.4 months; P< 0.001) outcomes, while the PCPI-2 group posed in between. The multivariate analysis outcomes confirmed the novel three tired PCPI’s independent prognostic significance on either of the PFS [HR: 5.38 (95% confidence interval (CI): 4.96-5.80); P< 0.001)] and OS [HR: 5.67 (95% CI: 5.19-6.15); P< 0.001] endpoints, separately.Conclusion: The new PCPI introduced here can be used as an independent and reliable prognostic indicator to divide LAPAC patients into three subgroups with discrete survival results.Keywords: locally advanced pancreas cancer, concurrent chemoradiotherapy, prognosis, survival outcomes, pancreas cancer prognostic index

Bee pollen, an important bee product, is harvested as a food supplement for humans, so it must be safe in terms of toxic components for consumption. The aim of this study is to determine the amounts of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) and non dioxin-like PCBs (ndl-PCBs) in the bee pollen pellets of Apis mellifera L. collected from Çankırı, located in the central Anatolia region of Turkey, between June and July 2014. Six types of pollen belonging to four families: Centaurea triumfettii L. - Asteraceae family; Brassica spp. L. - Brassicaceae family; Cistus spp. L. - Cistaceae family; Onobrychis spp. L., Hedysarum spp. L. and Trifolium spp. L. - Fabaceae family, were determined through microscopic analysis. Dioxin and PCB congeners were determined in a pooled bee pollen sample and all the results were found lower than the European Union regulatory limits for other foods. To the best of our knowledge, this is among the first studies on dioxin analysis in bee pollen worldwide.

Mine Yildirim, Deniz Kilic, Mehmet Emin Dursun, Birgul Dursun Department of Ophthalmology, Gazi Yasargil Training and Research Hospital, Diyarbakır, Turkey Abstract: In this report, we present a case of diabetic papillopathy that resolved after a single dose of intravitreal ranibizumab injection. A 50-year-old male presented with painless visual loss in his right eye. His visual acuity was 1/10 in the right eye and 10/10 in the left eye. Anterior segment examination of both eyes was unremarkable. Posterior segment of the right eye showed nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy with a swollen optic disc. Fluorescein angiography and optical coherence tomography were performed. There was dye leakage from the right optic disc. Optical coherence tomography revealed a significant increase in retinal nerve fiber layer thickness. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain and orbit were normal. The patient received a single intravitreal ranibizumab (0.5 mg) injection. Two weeks after the injection, there was a marked regression of the disc swelling. BACKGROUND: Nurses caring relationships with hypertensive patients can have a positive effect upon their blood pressure and may increase quality of life and prolongation of life. Hypertension affects a large number of people. It is important that those affected receive, in addition to the best available medical treatment, nursing care that best meets their needs and adds to the quality of their lives. Watson's Caring Model is one nursing approach consistent with needs of persons with hypertension, and was used in this study to guide both research and practice. AIM: To determine the effectiveness of a nurse's caring relationship according to Watson's Caring Model on the blood pressure and the quality of life of patients with hypertension. METHODS: The design of the study was a one-group pretest and post-test. The study included 52 patients with hypertension in four health care units in Erzurum, Turkey in 2000. These patients had been diagnosed with hypertension and invited to participate in a research project involving nursing care. After acceptance, patients were given questionnaires consisting of demographic characteristics; their blood pressure was measured, and a quality of life scale was administered. Each of the participating nurse researchers was prepared in the use of Watson's Theory and Model of Caring (and the 10 Carative Factors). This training formed the basis of the caring process used by the nurse researchers who then visited the patients and their families once a week for blood pressure measurement for a 3-month period. At the end of care, the quality of life scale was applied to patients, and blood pressures were measured as the post-test. RESULTS: There were statistically significant differences between mean scores of general well-being (t = 3.097, d.f. = 51, P = 0.003), physical symptoms and activity (t = 2.994, d.f. = 51, P = 0.004), medical interaction (t = 2.127, d.f. = 51, P = 0.035). There were also significant differences between blood pressure (systolic: t = 4.830, d.f. = 51, P = 0.000; and diastolic: t = 3.51, d.f. = 51, P = 0.001) in pre- and post-test. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated a relationship between care given according to Watson's Caring model and increased quality of life of the patients with hypertension. Further, in those patients for whom the caring model was practised, there was a relationship between the Caring model and a decrease in patient's blood pressure. The Watson Caring Model is recommended as a guide to nursing patients with hypertension, as one means of decreasing blood pressure and increase in quality of life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We describe an unusual case of lymphocytic pleural effusion associated with the use of cilazapril, a novel angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitor (ACEI). An 80-year-old male was prescribed cilazapril for hypertension. He subsequently presented with right chest pain and dry cough. He was found to have a lymphocytic pleural effusion on thoracentesis. Extensive workup, including open pleural biopsy, failed to reveal the etiology of the effusion. However, soon after the withdrawal of cilazapril, his clinical symptoms improved and the effusion disappeared. ACEI-induced pleural effusion has only been rarely reported. Drug-induced pleural effusion should be considered when formulating the differential diagnosis in a patient receiving ACEI.

Background: Increased early diagnosis and improved treatment options have decreased the mortality rate of breast cancer and increased the survival rate. Healthy lifestyle behaviors are very important in breast cancer survivors as they reduce mortality and morbidity rates, cancer recurrence frequency, and side effects of treatment and improve health. This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a health promotion training intervention in breast cancer survival., Materials and Methods: The study is a quasi-experimental, pre-test-post-test and single-group study. It was conducted with 43 women breast cancer survivors. The "Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Scale II" was used to collect the data. Four sessions of training were given to the women once a week, and a 3-month post-training follow-up was performed. The t -test, Wilcoxon analysis, and Spearmen correlation analysis were used to evaluate the data., Results: Pre-training and post-training scores in the sub-dimensions and total scores of the healthy lifestyle behavior scale showed that the training was highly effective. There was a significant increase in all sub-dimensions and total scale post-training scores ( P < 0.05). In the correlation analysis, a negative correlation was found between age and physical activity, between elapsed time after diagnosis and nutrition, and between elapsed time after diagnosis and spiritual development ( P < 0,05). However, there was a positive correlation between educational status and nutrition ( P < 0.05)., Conclusions: The results show that a health promotion training program covering physical activity/exercise, healthy nutrition, effective communication, coping with stress, and increasing health responsibility had positive effects on healthy lifestyle behaviors in this population, and age, educational status, and elapsed time after diagnosis influence healthy lifestyle behaviors in survival., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest., (Copyright: © 2024 Journal of Education and Health Promotion.)

Objectives: Home care that maintains continuity of health care services after cardiac surgery is considered a complementary component of clinical care. We estimated that effective home care given with a multidisciplinary approach would contribute to decreasing symptoms and readmissions to the hospital after cardiac surgery., Study Design: This experimental study with a 6-week follow-up period and a 2-group repeated measures design with pretest, posttest, and interval tests was conducted in a public hospital in Turkey in 2016., Methods: We identified the self-efficacy levels, symptoms, and readmissions to the hospital of 60 patients (30 in the experimental group and 30 in the control group) throughout the data collection process, and we estimated the effect of home care on self-efficacy, symptom management, and hospital readmissions by comparing the data of patients in the experimental and control groups. Each patient in the experimental group received 7 home visits along with 24/7 telephone counseling services throughout the first 6 weeks after discharge, and patients were provided physical care, training, and counseling services during these home visits with the collaboration of their physician., Results: Home care resulted in better self-efficacy and fewer symptoms in the experimental group (P < .05), and it also reduced readmissions to the hospital in the experimental group (23.3%) compared with the control group (46.7%)., Conclusions: This study's findings suggest that home care, with a focus on continuity of care, decreases symptoms and readmissions to the hospital and improves the self-efficacy of patients after cardiac surgery.
