Abstract: A new episode of unrest and phreatic/phreatomagmatic/magmatic eruptions occurred at Ambae volcano, Vanuatu, in 2017–2018. We installed a multi-station seismo-acoustic network consisting of seven 3-component broadband seismic stations and four 3-element (26–62 m maximum inter-element separation) infrasound arrays during the last phase of the 2018 eruption episode, capturing at least six reported major explosions towards the end of the eruption episode. The observed volcanic seismic signals are generally in the passband 0.5–10 Hz during the eruptive activity, but the corresponding acoustic signals have relatively low frequencies (

Stratovolcanoes are common globally, with high‐altitude summit regions that are often glacier‐clad and intersect the seasonal and perennial snow line. During an eruption, interaction between snow/ice and hot, pyroclastic deposits will potentially lead to extensive melt and steam production. This is particularly pertinent when pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) are emplaced onto and propagate over glacierised substrates. Generated melt and steam are incorporated into the flow, which can cause a transformation from a hot, dry granular flow, to a water‐saturated, sediment‐laden flow, termed a lahar. Both PDCs and ice‐melt lahars are highly hazardous due to their high energy during flow and long runout distances. Knowledge of the physics that underpin these interactions and the transformation to ice‐melt lahar is extremely limited, preventing accurate descriptions within hazard models. To physically constrain the thermal interactions we conduct static melting experiments, where a hot granular layer was emplaced onto an ice substrate. The rate of heat transfer through the particle layer, melt and steam generation were quantified. Experiments revealed systematic increases in melt and steam with increasing particle layer thicknesses and temperatures. We also present a one‐dimensional numerical model for heat transfer, calibrated against experimental data, capable of accurately predicting temperature and associated melting. Furthermore, similarity solutions are presented for early‐time melting which are used to benchmark our numerical scheme, and to provide rapid estimates for meltwater flux hydrographs. These data are vital for predicting melt volume and incorporation into PDCs required to facilitate the transformation to and evolution of ice‐melt lahars. Plain Language Summary: When volcanoes explosively erupt they may produce avalanches of hot, dry volcanic ash. When these volcanic avalanches occur on snow and glacier‐covered volcanoes, they produce steam and melt, that can mix with the volcanic avalanche, transforming it to a cool, wet volcanic mudflow. Both volcanic avalanches and mudflows are extremely destructive and dangerous due to their high speeds and long flow paths. Historically, these flows have resulted in many fatalities and extensive building and infrastructure damage. We investigate the conditions under which transformation from volcanic avalanches to mudflows can occur. We use small‐scale laboratory experiments to measure the transfer of heat, steam, and melt generation when a hot ash layer is emplaced onto an ice layer. A numerical model is presented to describe this heat transfer at large scales, like in natural volcanic settings. This can be used to estimate the amount of melt required to cause this transformation from volcanic avalanche to mudflow. This can help us predict the destructiveness of these interactive events, and help us convey the hazard to stakeholders, and populations living in regions affected by volcano‐ice interactions. Silicic caldera volcanoes present major volcanic and seismic hazards but also host dynamic hydrothermal and groundwater systems and a rich but largely unexplored subsurface biosphere. Many of these volcanoes are hosted in rift settings. The intricate connections and feedbacks among magmatism, rifting, hydrothermal processes, and the biosphere in these complex systems remain poorly understood, necessitating subsurface joint observations that are only enabled by scientific drilling. The CALDERA (Connections Among Life, geo-Dynamics and Eruptions in a Rifting Arc caldera) project workshop funded by the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) gathered multi-disciplinary international experts in January 2023 to advance planning of a scientific drilling project within one of these dynamic, rift-hosted calderas, the Okataina Volcanic Centre (OVC), Aotearoa New Zealand. The OVC's high eruption rate, frequent unrest events and earthquake swarms, location in a densely faulted rapidly extending rift, abundant groundwater–geothermal fluid circulations, and diverse surface hot spring microbiota make it an ideal location for exploring a connected geo-hydro-biosphere via scientific drilling and developing a test bed for novel volcano monitoring approaches. Drilling configurations with at least two boreholes (∼ 200 and ∼ 1000–1500 m deep) were favoured to achieve the multi-disciplinary objectives of the CALDERA project. Decadal monitoring including biosphere activity and composition has the potential to evaluate the response of the hydro-bio system to volcano-tectonic activity. In addition to the OVC caldera-scale datasets already available, site surveys will be conducted to select the best drilling locations. The CALDERA project at the OVC would provide, for the first time, an understanding of volcanic–tectonic–hydrological–biological connections in a caldera–rift system and a baseline for global comparisons with other volcanoes, rifts, and hydrothermal systems. CALDERA would serve as an unprecedented model system to understand how and how quickly the subsurface biosphere responds to geologic activities. Discoveries will improve assessment of volcanic and seismic hazards, guide the sustainable management and/or conservation of groundwater and geothermal resources and microbial ecosystems, and provide a forum for interweaving mātauranga Māori and Western knowledge systems. Ambae Island is the largest volcano in the New Hebrides Arc with recent eruptive activity occurring primarily at the summit and along the island's rift zone. The Devil's Rock area forms a prominent outcrop on the SW coast. Eruptive deposits here are derived from both strombolian and phreatomagmatic eruptions that contain a similar olivine- and clinopyroxene-rich juvenile basaltic component. This study focuses on a particular transition from strombolian to phreatomagmatic activity to understand if the change in eruption style is a function of magmatic processes or properties (e.g. different composition, ascent rate, degassing history) or if it is driven purely by external factors (e.g. magma–water interaction and/or vent migration). Melts from the strombolian to phreatomagmatic phase record the same melt compositions and volatile contents, suggesting the same magma batch is involved throughout the eruption. More broadly, similarities in H2O, CO2 and S concentrations between olivine- and pyroxene-hosted melt inclusions from Devil's Rock melt inclusions and those erupted during the 2017–2018 summit eruptions may indicate that a long-term shared magmatic reservoir exists beneath Ambae. Physical characteristics of juvenile tephra including groundmass crystallinity and porosity are combined with melt inclusion compositions to better understand the degassing and crystallisation history and melt evolution of this volcanic system across the transitioning eruptive sequence. Groundmass crystallisation is variable and negatively correlated with connected porosity of erupted scoria reflecting mixing of materials at the vent and inclusion of dense clasts from conduit margins. A direct comparison of crystallinities between strombolian and phreatomagmatic phases reveals higher crystallinity in the strombolian deposits, which is reflective of post-fragmentation crystallisation of clasts. This is particularly evident in the proximal strombolian materials. Qualitative crystallisation textures of melt inclusions are used in a similar fashion to groundmass crystallinities to assess the relative timing of cooling. These trends mirror those of the groundmass and suggest longer cooling times and more effective degassing for samples of the transitional materials. Based on our analysis of deposits at Devil's Rock, the transition from a strombolian to a phreatomagmatic eruption style was likely driven by groundwater or seawater incursion into the shallow conduit, close to modern-day sea level. Overall, these results suggest a dynamic system where different magmatic cooling histories for strombolian versus phreatomagmatic eruptive phases are reflected in changing groundmass crystallinity. This highlights the propensity for transitions in eruption style over seemingly short time intervals and significantly enhancing eruption explosivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
