The purpose of the Ohio College Library Center (OCLC) computerized regional library system is to provide an on-line system that makes available to faculty and students in individual colleges and universities the library resources throughout a region, while at the same time decelerating the rate of rise of per-student library costs. The research and development culminated in the successful implementation of an on-line union catalog and shared cataloging system. The final report of the project is LI 004 422. This document contains appendix twenty-five, The Ohio College Library Center Program/Subroutine Documentation; Convert Call Number (CNVT). CNVT is the first step in the formatting and production of catalog cards. The primary function is to format the call number for each catalog card request according to the predetermined specifications. To accomplish the individual format, CNVT uses a massive tree structure of information accessed by profiles, one profile per member holding library. Secondary functions of CNVT include formatting of some user data and selective deletion of unnecessary data from the member profile. This document contains appendix twenty-four, The Ohio College Library Center Program/Subroutine Documentation; Master Data Base Update (MDBUPD). The program MDBUPD (Master Data Base Update) is used to add the records from the weekly MARC tapes to the existing data base. This program takes a record that is in MARC format, checks the entries for validity, and converts it into the current bibliographic data file format. The program assigns an OCLC number to new records and adds them to the data base. MDBUPD replaces corrected or revised records and deletes unwanted records. It also returns various statistics. The purpose of the research and development described in this report is to implement and operate an on-line, computerized regional library system that makes available to faculty and students in individual colleges and universities the library resources throughout a region, while at the same time decelerating the rate of rise of per-student library costs. The major intellectual problem solved in the course of the investigation was the design of on-line computer files of bibliographic records and a technique for efficient retrieval of bibliographic data from the files employing derived, truncated search keys. The research and development culminated in the successful implementation of an on-line union catalog and shared cataloging system. A variety of libraries, large and small, had demonstrated that not only could the system slow the rate of rise of per-student costs, but also could effect net savings for libraries. The conclusions of this report are that the Ohio College Library Center (OCLC) system does make available library resources throughout a region to individuals at a participating institution, that it decelerates the rate of rise of per-student costs and can effect net savings, and is transferrable to other regions. Computerization of acquisitions activity is a technological advance already underway. Like all advances in technology it requires advances in knowledge, and future advances will occur only after research has produced the necessary knowledge. Comprehensive system design made possible by computerization will provide acquisitions with the objective of participating in academic educational and research programs. Finally, computerization of acquisitions constituting a continuously productive new technology will contribute to elimination of the financial crisis in which academic libraries now find themselves. This document contains appendices twenty-six and -seven: The Ohio College Library Center Program/Subroutine Documentation--(26) Generate Pack Definition Tables (GENPDTS) and (27) Catalog Card Format Program (CCFP). The FORTRAN program, GENPDTS, records the institutions' coded cataloging requirements in the format required by the CCFP. The second step in the formatting and production of catalog cards which are sent to member libraries is the CCFP. Depending on pre-determined specifications for each member library, CCFP creates a card for each catalog set up by the member, varying the headings and setting indentions as prescribed by the member. A concept of a catalog that is hospitable to mechanized descriptive cataloging is presented, together with four areas of research programs that will yield findings useful in the development of such a catalog. (Author/JB)

The history of library computerization from its initiation in 1954 to 1970 is described. Approximately the first half of the period was devoted to computerization of user-oriented subject information retrieval and the second half to library-oriented programs. (Author)

The recent experiences of the Ohio College Library Center's computer-based cataloging system illustrate how the computer can facilitate interlibrary cooperation. The paper also presents some of the difficult organizational problems which must be coped with in developing a computer-based cooperative system. (6 references) (Author/DH)

This investigation shows that search keys derived from personal author names possess a sufficient degree of distinctness to be employed in an efficient computerized interactive index to a file of MARC II catalog records having 167,745 personal author entries. (8 references) (Author)

Development and implementation of an off-line catalog card production system and an on-line shared cataloging system are described. An account is given of system design and equipment selection for the on-line system. File organization and programs are described, and the on-line cataloging system is discussed.
