Abstract

The movement of supramolecular self‐assemblies has been induced by the application of external stimuli that cause a shift to non‐equilibrium conditions. However, few supramolecular chemical systems exist in which multiple different functions are associated with movement. Herein, we observed multiple phase transition of micrometer‐sized lauronitrile oil droplets in a solution of cationic surfactants with aniline skeletons in the presence of metal ions. These dynamics include tactic motion and subsequent formation of aggregates with membrane structures, in a linear‐type channel. These dynamic behaviors result from variations in the interfacial tension at the droplet surface and the chemical compositions owing to the interactions between system components. The current findings may provide a methodology for designing molecular systems in which multi‐step phase transitions of supramolecular self‐assemblies are coupled to movement in non‐equilibrium conditions. Abstract

To cope with recent advances in radiologic imaging technology, a corresponding method for pathomorphologic demonstration should be developed to promote better understanding of radiologic-pathologic correlation. We attempted to obtain gross and microscopic images by using a 3-dimensional analytic tool and virtual microscopy and to link these images with multidetector computed tomography images. Surgically resected specimens were sliced to a thickness of 3 mm, and the digital images of each slice were 3-dimensionally reconstructed with RATOC TRI/3D SRF II software. Histology slides were digitized by using virtual microscopy with an Olympus VS-100. We obtained clear gross pathologic images in arbitrary cut sections of organs, and it was possible to rotate these 3-dimensional images at any angle. Furthermore, we created synchronous cut-section movies of computed tomography and gross pathologic images. Subsequently, we switched from these cut-section movies to virtual microscopy images by clicking on the hyperlink button to observe radiologic-pathologic correlation., In 2005, at the pathology slide conference of the Chugoku-Shikoku branch of The Japanese Society of Pathology, it was announced that digital images would be included on our home page. Abstract

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We generated regional cerebral blood volume (rCBV) and regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) studies from dynamic susceptibility contrast-enhanced MR images after an intravenous bolus injection of contrast agent (perfusion-weighted imaging [PWI]) by applying indicator dilution theory. We used a multishot echo-planar imaging (EPI) sequence to obtain adequate arterial input function (AIF). Our purpose was to compare the cerebral hemodynamics measured by PWI with the rCBF values and cerebral perfusion reserve obtained by xenon-133 single-photon emission CT ((133)Xe-SPECT). METHODS: Eight patients with chronic internal carotid artery occlusion or stenosis were examined. PWI data were acquired using a multishot EPI sequence, and the AIF was determined automatically. Our procedure was based on indicator dilution theory and deconvolution analysis. To eliminate the effect of superficial vessels, the automatic threshold selection method was used. RESULTS: AIF was adequate to generate rCBF and rCBV images. The rCBF and rCBV images by PWI were superior to (133)Xe-SPECT scans in spatial resolution, and the rCBF values obtained by PWI correlated well with those obtained by (133)Xe-SPECT. The regions with severely decreased perfusion reserve, which were determined by pre- and post-acetazolamide (133)Xe-SPECT, showed significantly lower rCBF and higher rCBV by PWI than did regions with normal and moderately decreased perfusion reserve. CONCLUSION: The rCBF and rCBV images generated by our procedure using PWI data appear to provide important clinical information for evaluating the degree of cerebral perfusion reserve impairment in patients with chronic ischemia.

44. Crystal Structures of Two Vancomycin Complexes with Phosphate and N-Acetyl–d-Ala. Structural Comparison between Low-Affinity and High-Affinity Ligand Complexes of Vancomycin

Abstract

Crystal structures of two vancomycin complexes with phosphate and N-acetyl–d-Ala (AcDA) were determined. Each complex involves two crystallographically independent vancomycin molecules (V1 and V2) in the asymmetric unit, which form a usually observed back-to-back arranged vancomycin dimer V1–V2 with two disaccharide chains packed in a head-to-head manner, but only one of the two ligand-binding sites is occupied. Comparison of the published crystal structures of low-affinity (small in molecular size) ligand complexes of vancomycin with high-affinity (large) ligand complexes reveals that when the high-affinity ligand binds, three structural factors (hydrogen-bonding interactions between the two peptide-backbones and hydrophobic intra-dimer sugar–ring and ring (face)–ring (edge) interactions) work to enhance the stabilization of the back-to-back dimer-interface, an important factor that is believed to promote antibacterial activity. It has also been revealed, by examining the high-affinity ligand complexes (including N-acetyl–d-Ala–d-Ala), that sugar–ligand interaction could cause different affinities of the two halves of the dimer; this is a factor responsible for the failure of the ligand binding to V1 in the AcDA complex. Possible scenarios for the formation of vancomycin complexes with low-affinity as well as high-affinity ligands are presented.

45. Electrode Performance of Newly Developed Ni-W-S Deposited Alloy for Alkaline Water Electrolysis

Abstract

Ni-W-S coatings were fabricated by electroplating. The bath denoted as “Ni-W-S No.1” was derived from a neutral pH bath for Ni-W alloy plating. Furthermore, sulfosalicylic acid was added as a stress reducer in order to prevent surface cracks. In the solution denoted as “Ni-W-S No.2” contains sodium tungstate, as a source of tungsten, sodium citrate. Plating solution denoted as “Ni-S” is same bath with Ni-W-S No.2 without sodium tungstate. Ni-W-S electrodes showed significantly excellent characteristics as a cathode for alkaline water electrolysis. Specifically, the Ni-W-S electrode in which sulfosalicylic acid was added as a stress reducer exhibited an excellent performance comparing to conventional Ni-S and Ni cathode. In order to obtain the performances of thus obtained electrode for alkaline water electrolysis, an electrode surface morphology was observed by SEM and the film composition was evaluated by EDX. In order to specify the crystal structure, XRD was employed. Furthermore, in order to evaluate the durability performance as a cathode for water electrolysis, sequential changes in electrode performance was investigated periodically using LSV while performing long-term electrolysis test for 48 hours. Furthermore the prevention of sulfur dissolution during cathodic polarization was monitored.

Abstract: Reaction of 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (cyclen) and Cu(ClO4)2·6H2O with nucleobases (adenine, hypoxanthine, xanthine, theophylline, cytosine, or uracil) under alkaline conditions gave four ternary cyclen–metal–nucleobase complexes, [Cu(cyclen)(adeninato)]·ClO4·2H2O (1), [{Cu(cyclen)}2(hypoxanthinato)]·(ClO4)3 (2), [Cu(cyclen)(theophyllinato)]3·(ClO4)3·2H2O (3), and [Cu(cyclen)(xanthinato)]·(0.7ClO4)·(0.3ClO4)·3H2O·(0.5H2O)3 (4), whose crystal structures were determined by X-ray diffraction. In the adenine complex 1, a cyclen-capped square–pyramidal Cu2+ ion binds to an adeninato ligand through N(9) with the formation of an intramolecular interligand hydrogen bond between the secondary amino nitrogen of cyclen and N(3) of the base. In the hypoxanthine complex 2, two cyclen-capped Cu2+ ions bind to a hypoxanthinato ligand, one through N(7) with the formation of an intramolecular N(cyclen)–H···O(6) hydrogen bond and the other through N(9) to form an intramolecular N(cyclen)–H···N(3) hydrogen bond. Similarly, in both the theophylline complex 3 and the xanthine complex 4, each cyclen-capped Cu2+ ion binds to a theophyllinato or xanthinato ligand through N(7) with the formation of an intramolecular N(cyclen)–H···O(6) hydrogen bond. However, unlike in 2, steric constraints between amino group(s) of cyclen and the methyl group at N(3) of theophylline in 3 or the proton attached to N(9) of xanthine in 4 preclude the metal bonding to N(9) in 3 or N(3) in 4. The significance of intramolecular interligand interaction as a factor that affects metal-binding site(s) on nucleobases is emphasized. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
