Abstract

Freshwater macroinvertebrates are a diverse group and play key ecological roles, including accelerating nutrient cycling, filtering water, controlling primary producers, and providing food for predators. Their differences in tolerances and short generation times manifest in rapid community responses to change. Macroinvertebrate community composition is an indicator of water quality. In Europe, efforts to improve water quality following environmental legislation, primarily starting in the 1980s, may have driven a recovery of macroinvertebrate communities. Towards understanding temporal and spatial variation of these organisms, we compiled the TREAM dataset (Time seRies of European freshwAter Macroinvertebrates), consisting of macroinvertebrate community time series from 1,816 river and stream sites (mean length of 19.2 years and 14.9 sampling years) of 22 European countries sampled between 1968 and 2020. In total, the data include >93 million sampled individuals of 2,648 taxa from 959 genera and 212 families. These data can be used to test questions ranging from identifying drivers of the population dynamics of specific taxa to assessing the success of legislative and management restoration efforts.

Abstract

Owing to a long history of anthropogenic pressures, freshwater ecosystems are among the most vulnerable to biodiversity loss 1. Mitigation measures, including wastewater treatment and hydromorphological restoration, have aimed to improve environmental quality and foster the recovery of freshwater biodiversity 2. Here, using 1,816 time series of freshwater invertebrate communities collected across 22 European countries between 1968 and 2020, we quantified temporal trends in taxonomic and functional diversity and their responses to environmental pressures and gradients. We observed overall increases in taxon richness (0.73% per year), functional richness (2.4% per year) and abundance (1.17% per year). However, these increases primarily occurred before the 2010s, and have since plateaued. Freshwater communities downstream of dams, urban areas and cropland were less likely to experience recovery. Communities at sites with faster rates of warming had fewer gains in taxon richness, functional richness and abundance. Although biodiversity gains in the 1990s and 2000s probably reflect the effectiveness of water-quality improvements and restoration projects, the decelerating trajectory in the 2010s suggests that the current measures offer diminishing returns. Given new and persistent pressures on freshwater ecosystems, including emerging pollutants, climate change and the spread of invasive species, we call for additional mitigation to revive the recovery of freshwater biodiversity.

Abstract

Our capacity to predict trajectories of ecosystem degradation and recovery is limited, especially when impairments are caused by multiple stressors. Recovery may be fast or slow and either complete or partial, sometimes result in novel ecosystem states or even fail completely. Here, we introduce the Asymmetric Response Concept (ARC) that provides a basis for exploring and predicting the pace and magnitude of ecological responses to, and release from, multiple stressors. The ARC holds that three key mechanisms govern population, community and ecosystem trajectories. Stress tolerance is the main mechanism determining responses to increasing stressor intensity, whereas dispersal and biotic interactions predominantly govern responses to the release from stressors. The shifting importance of these mechanisms creates asymmetries between the ecological trajectories that follow increasing and decreasing stressor intensities. This recognition helps to understand multiple stressor impacts and to predict which measures will restore communities that are resistant to restoration.

Abstract

The Future Conversations workshop at CHIIR’21 looked to the future of search, recommendation, and information interaction to ask: where are the opportunities for conversational interactions? What do we need to do to get there? Furthermore, who stands to benefit? The workshop was hands-on and interactive. Rather than a series of technical talks, we solicited position statements on opportunities, problems, and solutions in conversational search in all modalities (written, spoken, or multimodal). This paper –co-authored by the organisers and participants of the workshop– summarises the submitted statements and the discussions we had during the two sessions of the workshop. 15. Variability in Benthic Ecosystem Functioning in Arctic Shelf and Deep-Sea Sediments: Assessments by Benthic Oxygen Uptake Rates and Environmental Drivers

Abstract

Remineralization of organic matter at the seafloor is an important ecosystem function, as it drives carbon and nutrient cycling, supplying nutrients for photosynthetic production, but also controls carbon burial within the sediment. In the Arctic Ocean, changes in primary production due to rapid sea-ice decline and thinning affect the export of organic matter to the seafloor and thus, benthic ecosystem functioning. Due to the remoteness and difficult accessibility of the Arctic Ocean, we still lack baseline knowledge about patterns of benthic remineralization rates and their drivers in both shelf and deep-sea sediments. Particularly comparative studies across regions are scarce. Here, we address this knowledge gap by contrasting benthic diffusive and total oxygen uptake rates (DOU and TOU), both established proxies of the benthic remineralization function, between shelf and deep-sea habitats of the Barents Sea and the central Arctic Ocean, sampled during a RV Polarstern expedition in 2015. DOU and TOU were measured using ex situ porewater oxygen microprofiles and sediment core incubations, respectively. In addition, contextual parameters including organic matter availability and microbial cell numbers were determined as environmental predictors. Pan-Arctic regional comparisons were obtained by extending our analyses to previously published data from the Laptev and Beaufort Seas. Our results show that (1) benthic oxygen uptake rates and most environmental predictors varied significantly between shelf and deep-sea habitats; (2) the availability of detrital organic matter is the main driver for patterns in total as well as diffusive respiration, while bacterial abundances were highly variable and only a weak predictor of differences in TOU and DOU; (3) regional differences in oxygen uptake across shelf and deep-sea sediments were mainly related to organic matter availability and may reflect varying primary production regimes and distances to the nearest shelf. Our findings suggest that the expected decline in sea-ice cover and the subsequent increase in export of organic matter to the seafloor may particularly enhance remineralization in the deep seas of the Arctic Ocean, altering benthic ecosystem functioning in future climate scenarios.

16. Simulated sensitivity time series and model performance in three German catchments

Abstract

The data sets contains the major results of the article “Improving information extraction from model data using sensitivity-weighted performance criteria“ written by Guse et al. (2020). In this article, it is analysed how a sensitivity-weighted performance criterion improves parameter identifiability and model performance. More details are given the in article. The files of this dataset are described as follows. Parameter sampling: FAST parameter sampling.xlsx: To estimate the sensitivity, the Fourier Amplitude Sensitivity Test (FAST) was used (R-routine FAST, Reusser, 2013). Each column shows the values of the model parameter of the SWAT model (Arnold et al., 1998). All parameters are explained in detail in Neitsch et al. (2011). The FAST parameter sampling defines the number of model runs. For twelve model parameters as in this case, 579 model runs are required. The same parameter sets were used for all catchments. Daily sensitivity time series: Sensitivity_2000_2005.xlsx: Daily time series of parameter sensitivity for the period 2000-2005 for three catchments in Germany (Treene, Saale, Kinzig). Each column shows the sensitivity of one parameter of the SWAT model. The methodological approach of the temporal dynamics of parameter sensitivity (TEDPAS) was developed by Reusser et al. (2011) and firstly applied to the SWAT model in Guse et al. (2014). As sensitivity index, the first-order partial variance is used that is the ratio of the partial variance of one parameter divided by the total variance. The sensitivity is thus always between 0 and 1. The sum in one row, i.e. the sensitivity of all model parameters on one day, could not be higher than 1. Parameter sampling: LH parameter sampling.xlsx: To calculate parameter identifiability, Latin Hypercube sampling was used to generate 2000 parameter sets (R-package FME, Soetaert and Petzoldt, 2010). Each column shows the values of the model parameter of the SWAT model (Arnold et al., 1998). All parameters are explained in detail in Neitsch et al. (2011). The same parameter sets were used for all catchments. Performance criteria with and without sensitivity weights: RSR_RSRw_cal.xlsx: • Calculation of the RSR once and RSRw separately for each model parameter. • RSR: Typical RSR (RMSE divided by standard deviation) • RSR_w: RSR with weights according to daily sensitivity time series. The calculation was carried out in all three catchments. • The column RSR shows the results of the RSR (RMSE divided by standard deviation) for the different model runs. • The column RSR[_parameter name] shows the calculation of the RSR_w for the specific model parameter. • RSR_w give weights on each day based on the daily parameter sensitivity (as shown in sensitivity_2000_2005.xlsx). This means that days with a higher parameter sensitivity are higher weighted. In the methodological approach the best 25% of the model runs were calculated (best 500 model runs) and the model parameters were constrained to the most appropriate parameter values (see methodological description in the article). Performance criteria for the three catchments: GOFrun_[catchment name]_RSR.xlsx: These three tables are organised identical and are available for the three catchments in Germany (Treene, Saale, Kinzig). In using the different parameter ranges for the catchments as defined in the previous steps, 2000 model simulation were carried out. Therefore, a Latin-Hypercube sampling was used (R-package FME, Soetaert and Petzoldt, 2010). The three tables show the results of 2000 model simulations for ten different performance criteria for the two different methodological approaches (RSR and swRSR) and two periods (calibration: 2000-2005 and validation: 2006-2010). Abstract

This paper is the outcome of a community initiative to identify major unsolved scientific problems in hydrology motivated by a need for stronger harmonisation of research efforts. The procedure involved a public consultation through online media, followed by two workshops through which a large number of potential science questions were collated, prioritised, and synthesised. In spite of the diversity of the participants (230 scientists in total), the process revealed much about community priorities and the state of our science: a preference for continuity in research questions rather than radical departures or redirections from past and current work. Questions remain focused on the process-based understanding of hydrological variability and causality at all space and time scales. Increased attention to environmental change drives a new emphasis on understanding how change propagates across interfaces within the hydrological system and across disciplinary boundaries. In particular, the expansion of the human footprint raises a new set of questions related to human interactions with nature and water cycle feedbacks in the context of complex water management problems. We hope that this reflection and synthesis of the 23 unsolved problems in hydrology will help guide research efforts for some years to come.

Abstract

The relevance of hydrological processes varies in space and time resulting in typical temporal patterns for catchments. Contrasting catchments moreover differ in their catchment metrics. Hydrological models claim to be able to reproduce typical temporal patterns of dominant processes using site-specific model parameters. Thus, patterns of temporal dynamics in dominant modelled processes and their corresponding dominant parameters are a fingerprint of how a model represents the hydrological behaviour of a catchment and how these process patterns vary between contrasting catchments.In this study, we demonstrate how catchment metrics, modelled processes and parameter dominances can be jointly used to characterise catchments. We assess how catchment characteristics are represented in spatio-temporal process dynamics in models and how to understand the reasons for hydrological (dis)similarity among catchments along a landscape gradient. For this purpose, catchment metrics which characterise contrasting landscapes (lowland, mid-range mountain and alpine catchments) are related to dominant processes and parameters which were provided by a temporally resolved sensitivity analysis (TEDPAS) and simulations of a hydrological model.Our study shows that the applied model is able to represent the different processes and their seasonal variability according to the specific hydrological conditions of the study catchments. By analysing catchment metrics, modelled processes and model parameters jointly, we show that the largest differences are identified for the alpine catchment, whilst similarities are found among the other catchments. Following a landscape gradient, high flow phases are dominated by different flow components. In contrast, the model shows groundwater dominance in low flow phases in non-alpine catchments while in the alpine catchment low flows in winter are mainly controlled by snow processes. Abstract

Objective Safe fall landing strategies (SFLS) have shown promise to decrease injury during falls but have been examined primarily in young, healthy populations. There is emerging evidence to suggest SFLS can be safe and effective for a geriatric population; however, this intervention has not been examined in a clinical physical therapist practice setting. This case study seeks to determine how SFLS can be incorporated into a physical therapy program with a geriatric population. Methods (Case Description) A 77-year-old woman reported imbalance and inability to return to her previous active lifestyle. Multiple SFLS were implemented during the course of physical therapist management. Controlled fall heights were gradually progressed over the course of therapy. Results Gains in Patient Specific Functional Scale score (initial score = 2.5, discharge score = 8), static balance, and ability to perform floor-to-waist lifting were seen following physical therapist intervention that included SFLS. The patient was able to perform a back fall and a front fall from a standing position and reported no adverse side effects throughout the course of physical therapist care. Conclusion This case report demonstrates how SFLS were safely and pragmatically progressed for 1 patient in a clinical physical therapy setting. SFLS may have the potential to improve patient outcomes and even decrease the risks associated with falls, though further evaluation is needed. Impact This case report introduces SFLS as an emerging intervention in the clinical physical therapist practice setting. Abstract

This paper overviews 18 plagiarism detectors that have been evaluated within the fifth international competition on plagiarism detection at PAN 2013. We report on their performances for the two tasks source retrieval and text alignment of external plagiarism detection. Furthermore, we continue last year’s initiative to invite software submissions instead of run submissions, and, re-evaluate this year’s submissions on last year’s evaluation corpora and vice versa, thus demonstrating the benefits of software submissions in terms of reproducibility.
