Abstract

Freshwater macroinvertebrates are a diverse group and play key ecological roles, including accelerating nutrient cycling, filtering water, controlling primary producers, and providing food for predators. Their differences in tolerances and short generation times manifest in rapid community responses to change. Macroinvertebrate community composition is an indicator of water quality. In Europe, efforts to improve water quality following environmental legislation, primarily starting in the 1980s, may have driven a recovery of macroinvertebrate communities. Towards understanding temporal and spatial variation of these organisms, we compiled the TREAM dataset (Time seRies of European freshwAter Macroinvertebrates), consisting of macroinvertebrate community time series from 1,816 river and stream sites (mean length of 19.2 years and 14.9 sampling years) of 22 European countries sampled between 1968 and 2020. In total, the data include >93 million sampled individuals of 2,648 taxa from 959 genera and 212 families. These data can be used to test questions ranging from identifying drivers of the population dynamics of specific taxa to assessing the success of legislative and management restoration efforts.

Abstract

Comprehensive large sample hydrological datasets, particularly the CAMELS datasets (Catchment Attributes and Meteorology for Large-sample Studies), have advanced hydrological research and education in recent years. These datasets integrate extensive hydrometeorological observations with landscape features, such as geology and land use, across numerous catchments within a national framework. They provide harmonised large sample data for various purposes, such as assessing the impacts of climate change or testing hydrological models on a large number of catchments. Furthermore, these datasets are essential for the rapid progress of data-driven models in hydrology in recent years. Despite Germany's extensive hydrometeorological measurement infrastructure, it has lacked a consistent, nationwide hydrological dataset, largely due to its decentralised management across different federal states. This fragmentation has hindered cross-state studies and made the preparation of hydrological data labour-intensive. The introduction of CAMELS-DE represents a step forward in bridging this gap. CAMELS-DE includes 1555 streamflow gauges with hydro-meteorological time series data covering up to 70 years (median length of 46 years and a minimum length of 10 years), from January 1951 to December 2020. It includes consistent catchment boundaries with areas ranging from 5 to 15,000 km 2 along with detailed catchment attributes covering soil, land cover, hydrogeologic properties and data about human influences. Furthermore, it includes a regionally trained Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) network and a locally trained conceptual model that were used as quality control and that can be used to fill gaps in discharge data or act as baseline models for the development and testing of new hydrological models. Given the large number of catchments, including numerous relatively small ones (617 catchments < 100 km 2 ), and the time series length of up to 70 years (156 catchments), CAMELS-DE is one of the most comprehensive national CAMELS datasets available and offers new opportunities for research, particularly in studying long-term trends, runoff formation in small catchments and in analysing catchments with strong human influences. Abstract

The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) is frequently used to simulate the transport of water-soluble chemicals in the environment such as pesticides and their metabolites originating from agricultural applications. However, the model does not simulate the transport of chemicals through subsurface tile drains and groundwater. This limitation is particularly significant in lowland regions and when simulating stable chemicals that can leach into and accumulate in groundwater. To fill this gap, the publicly available SWAT code was modified to complement the simulation of chemicals by adding transport capabilities through tile and groundwater flow. The extended model was tested in two agricultural catchments with a typically used pesticide and one of its metabolites. Results show that the transport of the pesticide is mainly governed by surface runoff and that shallow surface tile flow contributions can be significant. Metabolite concentrations in streamflow are, however, driven by a complex spatiotemporal interplay of all surface and subsurface transport components. This highlights the advantages of applying the modified code in catchment-scale environmental exposure studies and for developing best management practices or mitigation strategies. The new code is made available as an electronic supplement to this technical note.

Abstract

The Vakhsh River is tributary to the Amu Dayra, supporting numerous hydropower facilities as well as irrigation and community water supplies. High sediment loads are major concerns for these uses, yet little is known about the spatial distribution of the dominant sediment sources or their connectivity to fluvial systems. Here, we address this gap by combining findings from a series of field expeditions, remotely sensed climate and vegetation assessments, systematic sediment sampling, hydrograph analysis, and a review of local literature. Our preliminary findings show that various mass wasting processes (e.g., landslides, debris flows, rockfall, dry ravel, bank failures) constitute the major connected sources of sediment, particularly in the mid- to downriver reaches, many of which are unaffected by land use. Surface erosion, including the large gullies in loess deposits of the lower basin, are more affected by poor agricultural practices and road runoff, and can supply large loads of fine sediment into the river. Climate trends detected through remote sensing show an increase in rainfall in the lower half of the basin from spring to early summer while solid precipitation has increased in the eastern half in March. Abstract

Owing to a long history of anthropogenic pressures, freshwater ecosystems are among the most vulnerable to biodiversity loss1. Mitigation measures, including wastewater treatment and hydromorphological restoration, have aimed to improve environmental quality and foster the recovery of freshwater biodiversity2. Here, using 1,816 time series of freshwater invertebrate communities collected across 22 European countries between 1968 and 2020, we quantified temporal trends in taxonomic and functional diversity and their responses to environmental pressures and gradients. We observed overall increases in taxon richness (0.73% per year), functional richness (2.4% per year) and abundance (1.17% per year). However, these increases primarily occurred before the 2010s, and have since plateaued. Freshwater communities downstream of dams, urban areas and cropland were less likely to experience recovery. Communities at sites with faster rates of warming had fewer gains in taxon richness, functional richness and abundance. Although biodiversity gains in the 1990s and 2000s probably reflect the effectiveness of water-quality improvements and restoration projects, the decelerating trajectory in the 2010s suggests that the current measures offer diminishing returns. Given new and persistent pressures on freshwater ecosystems, including emerging pollutants, climate change and the spread of invasive species, we call for additional mitigation to revive the recovery of freshwater biodiversity.

Abstract

To summarize, we suggest a guideline for water quality modelling: 1. Spatial and temporal patterns of land use and land management are critical to adequately represent water quality in models. Remote sensing and land use models are very useful resources to be exploited. 2. The transfer of a model diagnostic analysis to water quality leads to a better understanding of how water quality variables are controlled by model structures and corresponding model parameters. 3. Assessing multiple model outputs regarding their temporal, spa- tial and process performance using observed time series, remotely sensed spatial patterns, knowledge about transport pathways and even soft data can significantly enhance model consistency. 4. Multi-metric calibration using performance metrics and signa- ture measures both for discharge and water quality, such as FDC and NDC, leads to more balanced model simulations that represent all magnitudes of discharge and water quality accurately. 5. Scenarios and storylines should be co-developed with stake- holders in the river basin to make them more realistic and increase the acceptance of model results. They should be realistic in space and time, and provide a mix of available management options. 6. The interpretation of BMPs can be supported by diagnostic tools to show the effectiveness of measures and their combinations while considering their costs and impacts on ecosystem services.

Abstract

Konsistente und umfassende Datensätze für hydro-meteorologische Analysen in Einzugsgebieten haben Forschung und Lehre in der Hydrologie, aber auch die wasserwirtschaftliche Praxis in den letzten Jahren geprägt und maßgeblich vorangebracht. CAMELS-Datensätze vereinigen Landschaftsmerkmale sowie hydrologische und meteorologische Zeitreihen in Hunderten von Einzugsgebieten. Diese Datensätze bieten generell die Möglichkeit, Modellierungen und Datenanalysen in einer Vielzahl von unterschiedlichen Landschaftsräumen durchzuführen und zu vergleichen. Dies ist grundlegend, um die z.B. die wasserwirtschaftlichen Auswirkungen des Klimawandels auf den Wasserkreislauf in Deutschland besser abzuschätzen. Auch können hydrologische Methoden zur Vorhersage und Risikoabschätzung entwickelt und hydrologische Extreme bewertet werden. Trotz eines der umfangreichsten hydro-meteorologischen Messnetzwerke der Welt, liegt ein solcher Datensatz für Deutschland bisher noch nicht vor. Motiviert durch diverse CAMELS-Datensätze aus anderen Ländern und der CAMELS-Konzeption, ist es das Ziel der „CAMELS-DE”-Initiative, einen solchen umfassenden Datensatz auch für Deutschland aufzubereiten und der Öffentlichkeit zur Verfügung zu stellen. -- Abstract (english): Consistent and comprehensive catchment data sets for hydro-meteorological analyses have significantly advanced research and teaching in hydrology, but also water management practice in recent years. CAMELS datasets combine landscape attributes and hydrological and meteorological time series in hundreds of catchments. These datasets generally offer the possibility to perform and compare modeling and data analysis across a wide range of different landscapes. This is fundamental in order to better assess, for example, the water management impacts of climate change on the hydrological cycle in Germany. Hydrological methods for forecasting and risk assessment can also be developed and hydrological extremes assessed. Despite one of the most extensive hydro-meteorological sampling networks in the world, such a data set is not yet available for Germany. Motivated by various CAMELS data sets from other countries and the CAMELS design, the aim of the "CAMELS-DE" initiative is to provide such a comprehensive data set as well for Germany to the public. Abstract

Globalization has led to the introduction of thousands of alien species worldwide. With growing impacts by invasive species, understanding the invasion process remains critical for predicting adverse effects and informing efficient management. Theoretically, invasion dynamics have been assumed to follow an “invasion curve” (S-shaped curve of available area invaded over time), but this dynamic has lacked empirical testing using large-scale data and neglects to consider invader abundances. We propose an “impact curve” describing the impacts generated by invasive species over time based on cumulative abundances. To test this curve's large-scale applicability, we used the data-rich New Zealand mud snail Potamopyrgus antipodarum, one of the most damaging freshwater invaders that has invaded almost all of Europe. Using long-term (1979–2020) abundance and environmental data collected across 306 European sites, we observed that P. antipodarum abundance generally increased through time, with slower population growth at higher latitudes and with lower runoff depth. Fifty-nine percent of these populations followed the impact curve, characterized by first occurrence, exponential growth, then long-term saturation. This behaviour is consistent with boom-bust dynamics, as saturation occurs due to a rapid decline in abundance over time. Across sites, we estimated that impact peaked approximately two decades after first detection, but the rate of progression along the invasion process was influenced by local abiotic conditions. The S-shaped impact curve may be common among many invasive species that undergo complex invasion dynamics. This provides a potentially unifying approach to advance understanding of large-scale invasion dynamics and could inform timely management actions to mitigate impacts on ecosystems and economies.

Abstract

This study shows a comprehensive simulation of water and sediment fluxes from the catchment to the reach scale. We describe the application of a modelling cascade in a well researched study catchment through connecting stateof- the-art public domain models in ArcGIS. Three models are used consecutively: (1) the hydrological model SWAT to evaluate water balances, sediment input from fields and tile drains as a function of catchment characteristics; (2) the onedimensional hydraulic model HEC-RAS to depict channel erosion and sedimentation along a 9 km channel onedimensionally; and (3) the two-dimensional hydraulic model AdH for simulating detailed substrate changes in a 230 m long reach section over the course of one year. Model performance for the water fluxes is very good, sediment fluxes and substrate changes are simulated with good agreement to observed data. Improvement of tile drain sediment load, simulation of different substrate deposition events and carrying out data sensitivity tests are suggested as future work. Main advantages that can be deduced from this study are separate representation of field, drain and bank erosion processes; shown adaptability to lowland catchments and transferability to other catchments; usability of the model’s output for habitat assessments.

Abstract

Konsistente, umfassende Datensätze für hydro-meteorologische Analysen in Einzugsgebieten haben sowohl die Forschung als auch die Lehre in der Hydrologie in den letzten Jahren geprägt und maßgeblich vorangebracht. Besonders der CAMELS-US Datensatz (Catchment Attributes and MEteorology for Large-Sample studies; 671 Einzugsgebiete verteilt über die USA), eine Weiterentwicklung des MOPEX Datensatzes (Model Parameter Estimation Project), hat dabei eine entscheidende Rolle gespielt. Seit Erscheinen dieses Datensatzes in den USA gibt es inzwischen eine Vielzahl von Ablegern wie etwa in Großbritannien, Chile, oder dem Donaueinzugsgebiet (CAMELS-UK, CAMELS-CL, LamaH-CE), die ähnlich aufgebaut sind und teilweise umfangreicher sind. Diese Datensätze haben gemein, dass sie Landschaftsattribute (z.B. Landnutzung, Geologie), hydrologische Größen (z.B. Wasserstand, Abfluss) sowie meteorologische Parameter (z.B. Niederschlag, Temperatur) in hunderten von Einzugsgebieten, konsistent miteinander verbinden und Unsicherheiten einzelner Variablen möglichst klar benennen. Ein solcher Datensatz bietet somit die Möglichkeit, Modelle und Datenanalysen in einer Vielzahl von unterschiedlichen Landschafträumen unkompliziert miteinander zu vergleichen und hydrometeorologische Variabilität in Zeit und Raum zu bewerten. Trotz des sehr umfangreichen hydro-meteorologischen Messnetzwerks liegt ein solcher Datensatz für Deutschland bisher noch nicht vor. Motiviert durch die oben genannten Datensätze und Studien ist das Ziel der „CAMELS-DE”- Initiative deshalb einen solchen konsistenten und umfassenden Datensatz auch für Deutschland aufzubereiten und der Öffentlichkeit zur Verfügung zu stellen. Durch die föderalen Strukturen der Bundesländer stellt dieses Vorhaben eine große Herausforderung dar, die aber durch gute Zusammenarbeit innerhalb der deutschen hydrologischen Community realisiert werden kann. Ziel dieses Poster-Beitrags ist es deshalb, Aufmerksamkeit für die CAMELS-DE Initiative zu generieren, Unterstützer aus Praxis und Forschung zu finden und die Teilnehmer des Tags der Hydrologie zu motivieren, uns mitzuteilen, was sie von einem zukünftigen CAMELS-DE Datensatz erwarten. Abstract

A recent global meta-analysis reported a decrease in terrestrial but increase in freshwater insect abundance and biomass (van Klink et al., Science 368, p. 417). The authors suggested that water quality has been improving, thereby challenging recent reports documenting drastic global declines in freshwater biodiversity. We raise two major concerns with the meta-analysis and suggest that these account for the discrepancy with the declines reported elsewhere. First, total abundance and biomass alone are poor indicators of the status of freshwater insect assemblages, and the observed differences may well have been driven by the replacement of sensitive species with tolerant ones. Second, many of the datasets poorly represent global trends and reflect responses to local conditions or nonrandom site selection.
