We present a fully explicit dynamic formulation for geometrically exact shear-deformable beams. The starting point of this work is an existing isogeometric collocation (IGA-C) formulation which is explicit in the strict sense of the time integration algorithm, but still requires a system matrix inversion due to the use of a consistent mass matrix. Moreover, in that work, the efficiency was also limited by an iterative solution scheme needed due to the presence of a nonlinear term in the time-discretized rotational balance equation. In the present paper, we address these limitations and propose a novel fully explicit formulation able to preserve high-order accuracy in space. This is done by extending a predictor--multicorrector approach, originally proposed for standard elastodynamics, to the case of the rotational dynamics of geometrically exact beams. The procedure relies on decoupling the Neumann boundary conditions and on a rearrangement and rescaling of the mass matrix. We demonstrate that an additional gain in terms of computational cost is obtained by properly removing the angular velocity-dependent nonlinear term in the rotational balance equation without any significant loss in terms of accuracy. The high-order spatial accuracy and the improved efficiency of the proposed formulation compared to the existing one are demonstrated through some numerical experiments covering different combinations of boundary conditions.

We propose an isogeometric approach to model the deformation of active thin films using layered, nonlinear, Kirchhoff Love shells. Isogeometric Collocation and Galerkin formulations are employed to discretize the electrophysiological and mechanical sub-problems, respectively, with the possibility to adopt different element and time-step sizes. Numerical tests illustrate the capabilities of the active stress based approach to effectively simulate the contraction of thin films in both quasi-static and dynamic conditions.

We propose a novel variationally consistent membrane wrinkling model for analyzing the mechanical responses of wrinkled thin membranes. The elastic strain energy density is split into tensile and compressive terms via a spectral decomposition of the strain tensor. Tensile and compressive parts of the stress and constitutive tensors are then obtained via consistent variation from the respective strain energies. Considering only the positive part of the strain energy in the variational formulation, we obtain a membrane with zero compressive stiffness. By adding the negative strain energy multiplied with a very small factor, we further obtain a residual compressive stiffness, which improves stability and allows handling also states of slackening. Comparison with results from analytical, numerical and experimental examples from the literature on membrane wrinkling problems demonstrate the great performance and capability of the proposed approach, which is also compatible with commercial finite element software.

This work presents an efficient quadrature rule for shell analysis fully integrated in CAD by means of Isogeometric Analysis (IGA). General CAD-models may consist of trimmed parts such as holes, intersections, cut-offs etc. Therefore, IGA should be able to deal with these models in order to fulfil its promise of closing the gap between design and analysis. Trimming operations violate the tensor-product structure of the used Non-Uniform Rational B-spline (NURBS) basis functions and of typical quadrature rules. Existing efficient patch-wise quadrature rules consider actual knot vectors and are determined in 1D. They are extended to further dimensions by means of a tensor-product. Therefore, they are not directly applicable to trimmed structures. The herein proposed method extends patch-wise quadrature rules to trimmed surfaces. Thereby, the number of quadrature points can be signifficantly reduced. Geometrically linear and non-linear benchmarks of plane, plate and shell structures are investigated. The results are compared to a standard trimming procedure and a good performance is observed.

A good understanding of the heat transfer in fused filament fabrication is crucial for an accurate stress prediction and subsequently for repetitive, high quality printing. This work focuses on two challenges that have been presented when it comes to the accuracy and efficiency in simulating the heat transfer in the fused filament fabrication process. With the prospect of choosing correct thermal boundary conditions expressing the natural convection between printed material and its environment, values for the convective heat transfer coefficient and ambient temperature were calibrated through numerical data fitting of experimental thermal measurements. Furthermore, modeling simplifications were proposed for an efficient numerical discretization of infill structures. Samples were printed with varying infill characteristics, such as varying air void size, infill densities and infill patterns. Thermal measurements were performed to investigate the role of these parameters on the heat transfer and based on these observations, possible modeling simplifications were studied in the numerical simulations.

Heat transfer simulations of the fused filament fabrication process are an important tool to predict bonding, residual stresses and strength of 3D printed parts. But in order to capture the significant thermal gradients that occur in the FFF printing process, a fine mesh discretization and short time steps are required, leading to extensive computational efforts. In this work a simulation framework is presented which combines several efficiency measures with the objective of reducing the computational efforts required in simulating the FFF printing process without simplifying the deposition physics or reducing the overall accuracy. Thus, the material deposition has been modeled with a hybrid element activation approach and elements are adaptively coarsened through an error-based coarsening condition. Additionally, an appropriate coarsening technique is presented for geometries with air-filled infill patterns. The accuracy of the numerical framework is experimentally validated and the efficiency of the framework is validated numerically by comparing the performance of models with and without any efficiency measures. Finally, its effectiveness is shown by simulating the printing process of a larger geometry.

We present an isogeometric method for Kirchhoff-Love shell analysis of shell structures with geometries composed of multiple patches and which possibly possess extraordinary vertices, i.e. vertices with a valency different to four. The proposed isogeometric shell discretisation is based on the one hand on the approximation of the mid-surface by a particular class of multi-patch surfaces, called analysis-suitable~$G^1$ [1], and on the other hand on the use of the globally $C^1$-smooth isogeometric multi-patch spline space [2]. We use our developed technique within an isogeometric Kirchhoff-Love shell formulation [3] to study linear and non-linear shell problems on multi-patch structures. Thereby, the numerical results show the great potential of our method for efficient shell analysis of geometrically complex multi-patch structures which cannot be modeled without the use of extraordinary vertices.

Penalty methods have proven to be particularly effective for achieving the required $C^1$-continuity in the context of multi-patch isogeometric Kirchhoff-Love shells. Due to their conceptual simplicity, these algorithms are readily applicable to the displacement and rotational coupling of trimmed, non-conforming surfaces. However, the accuracy of the resulting solution depends heavily on the choice of penalty parameters. Furthermore, the selection of these coefficients is generally problem-dependent and is based on a heuristic approach. Moreover, developing a penalty-like procedure that avoids interface locking while retaining optimal accuracy is still an open question. This work focuses on these challenges. In particular, we devise a penalty-like strategy based on the $L^2$-projection of displacement and rotational coupling terms onto a degree-reduced spline space defined on the corresponding interface. Additionally, the penalty factors are completely defined by the problem setup and are constructed to ensure optimality of the method. To demonstrate this, we asses the performance of the proposed numerical framework on a series of non-trimmed and trimmed multi-patch benchmarks discretized by non-conforming meshes. We systematically observe a significant gain of accuracy per degree-of-freedom and no interface locking phenomena compared to other penalty-like approaches. Lastly, we perform a static shell analysis of a complex engineering structure, namely the blade of a wind turbine.

This work focuses on an efficient stress recovery procedure for laminated composite curved structures, which relies on Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) and equilibrium. Using a single element through the thickness in combination with a calibrated layerwise integration rule or a homogenized approach, the 3D solid isogeometric modeling grants an inexpensive and accurate approximation in terms of displacements (and their derivatives) and in-plane stresses, while through-the-thickness stress components are poorly approximated. Applying a further post-processing step, an accurate out-of-plane stress state is also recovered, even from a coarse displacement solution. This is based on a direct integration of the equilibrium equations in strong form, involving high order derivatives of the displacement field. Such a continuity requirement is fully granted by IGA shape function properties. The post-processing step is locally applied, which grants that no additional coupled terms appear in the equilibrium, allowing for a direct reconstruction without the need to further iterate to resolve the out-of-balance momentum equation. Several numerical results show the good performance of this approach particularly for composite stacks with significant radius-to-thickness ratio and number of plies. In particular, in the latter case, where a layerwise technique employing a number of degrees of freedom directly proportional to the number of plies would be much more computationally demanding, the proposed method can be regarded as a very appealing alternative choice., Comment: 37 pages, 12 figures

In this paper, we use isogeometric Kirchhoff plates to approximate composite laminates adopting the classical laminate plate theory. Both isogeometric Galerkin and collocation formulations are considered. Within this framework, interlaminar stresses are recovered through an effective post-processing technique based on the direct imposition of equilibrium in strong form, relying on the accuracy and the higher continuity typically granted by isogeometric discretizations. In this work, we focus on the family of shell formulations referred to as "solid shells", where the simulation of shell-type structures is performed by means of a mesh of 3D solid elements, with typically only one element through the thickness. We propose a novel approach for alleviating the various locking phenomena, which typically appear in thin structures, based on the projection of strains onto discontinuous coarser polynomial spaces defined at element level. In particular, we present and investigate two different formulations based on this approach. Several numerical experiments prove the very good performance of both formulations. The interaction between thin structures and incompressible Newtonian fluids is ubiquitous both in nature and in industrial applications. In this paper we present an isogeometric formulation of such problems which exploits a boundary integral formulation of Stokes equations to model the surrounding flow, and a non linear Kirchhoff-Love shell theory to model the elastic behaviour of the structure. We propose three different coupling strategies: a monolithic, fully implicit coupling, a staggered, elasticity driven coupling, and a novel semi-implicit coupling, where the effect of the surrounding flow is incorporated in the non-linear terms of the solid solver through its damping characteristics. The novel semi-implicit approach is then used to demonstrate the power and robustness of our method, which fits ideally in the isogeometric paradigm, by exploiting only the boundary representation (B-Rep) of the thin structure middle surface., Comment: 33 pages, 9 figures.
