Vitamin D deficiency is one of the most common metabolic disorders in the European population. A low level of 25-OH vitamin D3 is related to an elevated risk of myocardial infarction (MI). The aim of our study was to examine the relationship between calcidiol and calcitriol serum concentration and left ventricular ejection fraction early after interventional treatment for acute coronary syndrome. A total of 80 patients diagnosed with MI, who underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention, were included in the study. Blood samples for calcidiol, calcitriol, and vitamin D-binding protein were obtained 24 h after primary PCI and were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Using an Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer we measured the concentration of selenium and arsenic in serum and blood samples from 336 unselected psoriatic patients and 336 matched healthy controls to evaluate any associations with the clinical course of the disease. We genotyped 336 patients and 903 matched controls to evaluate the prevalence of SOD2 (rs4880), CAT (rs1001179), GPX1 (rs1050450), and DMGDH (rs921943) polymorphisms using Taqman assays. The mean selenium (Se) level in serum was 74 µg/L in patients and 86 µg/L in controls (p < 0.001). The mean Se level in blood was 95 µg/L in patients and 111 µg/L in controls (p < 0.001). Psoriasis risk was greatest among participants with the lowest serum (p < 0.001) and lowest blood concentrations of Se (p < 0.001). Similar results were observed in subgroups of males and females. We found an inverse correlation of selenium levels with PASI, NAPSI, and BSA scores. There was no significant difference in the distribution of the CAT, GPX1, DMGDH, and SOD2 polymorphisms. Among carriers of rs4880, rs1001179, and rs921943 polymorphisms, blood selenium levels were significantly lower. The mean arsenic level in serum was 0.79 µg/L in patients and 0.7 µg/L in controls (p = 0.2). The mean concentration in blood was 1.1 µg/L in patients and 1.3 µg/L in controls (p < 0.001). In conclusion, we found that lower selenium levels, in blood and serum, are associated with psoriasis risk and its more severe course. Future prospective studies should focus on the optimalisation of the concentration of this trace element not only for prophylactic guidance but also to support the treatment of this disease.

It seems that 1.25(OH)D3 may contribute to acute myocardial infarction; however, there are insufficient clinical trials related to this topic, and the available evidence is mainly from in vitro studies. Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with complex pathogenesis and variable severity. Performed studies have indicated the impact of vitamin D3 deficiency on the pathogenesis of psoriasis and its severity. However, there is no clear evidence of the influence of the mucosal microbiome on the onset and progression of psoriasis. This review aims to present the current evidence on the role of vitamin D3 and colonization of the oral mucosa by Candida yeast-like fungi in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Candida albicans is a common yeast that can colonize the skin and mucosal surfaces, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems or compromised skin barriers. In psoriasis, the skin's barrier function is disrupted, potentially making patients more susceptible to fungal infections such as Candida. Since patients with psoriasis are at increased risk of metabolic syndrome, they may experience the vicious circle effect in which chronic inflammation leads to obesity. Vitamin D3 deficiency is also associated with microbiological imbalance, which may promote excessive growth of Candida fungi. Under normal conditions, the intestinal and oral microflora support the immune system. Vitamin D3 deficiency, however, leads to disruption of this balance, which allows Candida to overgrow and develop infections. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A large group of patients with significant asymptomatic or low-symptomatic coeliac trunk stenosis require deeper consideration. On angiography, CT and MRI, 10–24% of examined patients are found to have their coeliac trunk compressed by the median arcuate ligament of the diaphragm. The associated median arcuate ligament syndrome, which is also called coeliac trunk compression syndrome or Dunbar syndrome, is rarely fully symptomatic. It is estimated that there are up to 7% of patients with such a clinical presentation. An asymptomatic or low-symptomatic course of the disease in patients with the syndrome is mainly explained by a developed collateral circulation, particularly involving the arterial arcades of the head of pancreas. In such cases, CT angiography detects collateral circulation in 22–69.6% of examined patients. The present authors often observed coeliac trunk blood flow to normalise in a standing position. According to them, the main causative factor for this phenomenon is the deflection of the coeliac trunk and its compression against the aorta by a lowered left lobe of the liver. The researchers observed it in many individuals; in this study, 5 cases are presented.

The malignant melanoma of the skin is a very aggressive tumor. The determination of prognostic biomarkers is important for the early detection of recurrence, and for the enrollment of the patients into different treatment regimens. An evaluation of a cohort of 375 Polish MM cases revealed that a low serum iron concentration (i.e., below 893.05 µg/L) was associated with increased mortality. The study group was followed up from the date of melanoma diagnosis until death or 2020. Patients were assigned to one of four categories in accordance with increasing iron level (I–IV quarters). Patients with a low iron level of below 893.05 µg/L (I quarter) had a significantly lower survival rate when compared to the subgroup with the highest iron level, above 1348.63 µg/L (IV quarter; HR = 4.12; p = 0.028 and HR = 4.66; p = 0.019 for uni- and multivariable models, respectively). Multivariable analysis took into account the following factors: iron levels, Clark, sex, and age. Future studies based upon the examination of a larger number of cases should be conducted to confirm our findings.

Background: The incidence and influence of vagal response (VR) observed during cryoballoon-based pulmonary vein isolation (CBA-based PVI) on the cardiac autonomic nervous system (CANS) and ablation outcomes in paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) remain unknown. Methods: 296 patients were treated with a 28 mm second-generation cryoballoon (Medtronic). A total of 74 patients without structural heart disease and concomitant diseases were chosen for a detailed CANS assessment with a heart rate variability (HRV) analysis. All patients were screened over a 2-year post-ablation period. Results: VR was detected in 30% of patients and included sinus arrest (64%) or severe sinus bradycardia (46%). The presence of VR was not related to PV ostial dimension, patient clinical characteristics or intraprocedural ablation details. CANS modulation, manifesting as increased median HR and decreased HRV parameters with intact sympatho-vagal balance occurred independently of VR presence or absence and sustained for at least 12 months following ablation. VR was not related with more intensive CANS modulation and did not translate into better ablation outcomes when compared to the non-VR group (74% vs. 71% at 12 months and 69% vs. 65% at 24 months respectively). Conclusions: VR is frequent during CBA-based PVI for PAF and unrelated to any additional clinical benefit.

The generation born about 20 years ago is treated as the one that in principle has always been able to use devices that have permanent access to the global network. At present, this generation known as iGEN completes the stage of school education and starts studying. It is interesting to identify the changes that occur in this generation, against the background of previous generations. It is also important whether excessive use of IT devices produces positive or negative effects. How much increased virtual contacts, at the expense of direct (real) relationships affect the quality of life of young people, or when they function like this they can feel happy and fulfilled

Melanoma is one of the most aggressive human malignancies. The determination of prognostic biomarkers is important for the early detection of recurrence and for the enrollment of the patients into different treatment regimens. Herein, we report the 10-year survival of 375 melanoma patients depending on their serum selenium levels. The study group was followed up from the date of melanoma diagnosis until death or 2020. Patients were assigned to one of four categories, in accordance with the increasing selenium level (I–IV quartiles). The subgroup with low selenium levels had a significant lower survival rate in relation to patients with high selenium levels, HR = 8.42; p = 0.005 and HR = 5.83; p = 0.02, for uni- and multivariable models, respectively. In the univariable analysis, we also confirmed the association between Breslow thickness, Clark classification and age at melanoma prognosis. In conclusion, a low serum selenium level was associated with an increased mortality rate in the 10 years following melanoma diagnosis. Future studies in other geographic regions with low soil selenium levels should be conducted to confirm our findings.

Abstract Passively dispersing organisms should optimise the time and direction of dispersal by employing behaviours that increase their probability of being successfully transported by dispersal agents. We rigorously tested whether two agriculturally important passively-dispersing eriophyoid species, wheat curl mite (WCM) and cereal rust mite (CRM), display behaviours indicating their readiness to depart from current host plants in the presence of potential dispersal cues: wind, an insect vector and presence of a fresh plant. Contrary to our expectations, we found that both species decreased their general activity in the presence of wind. When exposed to wind, WCM (but not CRM) significantly increased behaviour that has previously been considered to facilitate dispersal (in this case, standing vertically). Our study provides the first sound test of the function of what have been interpreted as dispersal-related behaviours of eriophyid mites. The low proportion of WCM exhibiting dispersal behaviour suggests there may be predisposed dispersers and residents in the population. Moreover, we found that WCM was generally more active than CRM, which is likely a contributing factor to its high invasive potential.

The authors present the model of the organization's safety management system (OSMS) for the purposes of shaping the information security policy. The proposed model is a comprehensive solu-tion. It can be easily implemented and implemented in any organization. The key element of this model is the subsystem controlling the current properties of both the itself OSMS and the systems constituting its immediate environment. The article is also an attempt to outline the most important threats in the area of information security of the contemporary organization.

The association of BRCA1/2 mutations with melanoma is not completely determined; the interpretation of variants of unknown significance is also problematic. To evaluate these issues we explored the molecular basis of melanoma risk by performing whole-exome sequencing on a cohort of 96 unrelated Polish early-onset melanoma patients and targeted sequencing of BRCA1/2 genes on additional 30 melanoma patients with familial aggregation of breast and other cancers. Sequencing was performed on peripheral blood. We evaluated MutationTaster, Polyphen2, SIFT, PROVEAN algorithms, analyzed segregation with cancer disease (in both families with identified BRCA2 variants) and in one family performed LOH (based on 2 primary tumors). We found neither pathogenic mutations nor variants of unknown significance within BRCA1. We identified two BRCA2 variants of unknown significance: c.9334G>A and c.4534 C>T. Disease allele frequency was evaluated by genotyping of 1230 consecutive melanoma cases, 5000 breast cancer patients, 3500 prostate cancers and 9900 controls. Both variants were found to be absent among unselected cancer patients and healthy controls. The MutationTaster, Polyphen2 and SIFT algorithms indicate that c.9334G>A is a damaging variant. Due to lack of tumour tissue LOH analysis could not be performed for this variant. The variant segregated with the disease. The c.4534 C>T variant did not segregate with disease, there was no LOH of the variant. The c.9334G>A variant, classified as a rare variant of unknown significance, on current evidence may predisposes to cancers of the breast, prostate and melanoma. Functional studies to describe how the DNA change affects the protein function and a large multi-center study to evaluate its penetrance are required.

Presented in this paper the methodology constitutes a proposal of approach to risk analysis and management of business processes, taking into account the different categories of risk factors with different areas of activities of an organization. Proposed in this study the meth­odology is divided into the method of risk analysis of business processes and the method of man­agement of this risk. The level of risk in the business processes estimated by using the proposed method ofrisk analysis is an input value for the risk management of business processes as well as to develop strategies for business continuity management and risk prevention and reduction.

Wprowadzenie: Pokrzywka przewlekła stanowi złożony pod względemetiologicznym problem kliniczny, wymagający szerokiego paneludiagnostycznego w celu ustalenia ewentualnego związku z innymischorzeniami, zwłaszcza o charakterze zapalnym. Cel pracy: Ocena prawdopodobnych przyczyn pokrzywki przewlekłeju pacjentów hospitalizowanych w Klinice Chorób Skórnych i WenerycznychPomorskiej Akademii Medycznej. Materiał i metodyka: Analizie poddano 104 pacjentów w wieku od15 do 82 lat, w tym 73 kobiety i 31 mężczyzn. U chorych przeprowadzonobadania diagnostyczne obejmujące między innymi ocenę parametrówstanu zapalnego, wskaźników infekcji przewodu pokarmowegooraz chorób tarczycy i tkanki łącznej. Wykonano również próbyfizykalne oraz diagnostykę alergii IgE-zależnej. Uzyskane wyniki poddanoanalizie statystycznej z użyciem programu Statistica 7.0. Wyniki: Średnia wieku chorych wynosiła 42,5 roku, w każdej grupiewiekowej przeważały kobiety, które stanowiły łącznie 70% badanych.W przypadku 39,4% pacjentów nie znaleziono potencjalnego czynnikawywołującego objawy i rozpoznano pokrzywkę idiopatyczną.U 37,6% osób spośród ogółu badanych wskazano jedną, a u pozostałych23% osób – więcej niż jedną prawdopodobną przyczynę występowaniapokrzywki. Wśród potencjalnych przyczyn przeważałyprzewlekłe stany infekcyjne (34%), zwłaszcza w obrębie przewodupokarmowego. Wykazano również związek z chorobami gruczołutarczowego, głównie o etiologii autoimmunologicznej (16,3%). Podejrzenietła autoimmunologicznego pokrzywki potwierdzono próbąz surowicą autologiczną u 24,3% chorych. Pokrzywkę fizykalnąrozpoznano u 17,3%, a współwystępowanie alergii IgE-zależnejstwierdzono u 15,4% pacjentów. Wnioski: Pokrzywka przewlekła występuje przede wszystkimu kobiet w średnim wieku. Spośród współistniejących z nią choróbogólnoustrojowych szczególne miejsce zajmują zakażenia o przewlekłym,często utajonym lub subklinicznym przebiegu. W naszym ma -teriale liczną grupę stanowili pacjenci, u których stwierdzono współwystępowaniekilku potencjalnych przyczyn pokrzywki.

The wheat curl mite (WCM), Aceria tosichella Keifer, is a major pest of cereals worldwide. It is also a complex of well-defined genetic lineages with divergent physiological traits, which has not been accounted for in applied contexts. The aims of the study were to model the thermal niches of the two most pestiferous WCM lineages, designated MT-1 and MT-8, and to assess the extent to which temperature determines the distribution of these lineages. WCM population dynamics were modeled based on thermal niche data from March to November on the area of Poland (>311,000 km2). The most suitable regions for population development were predicted and compared to empirical field abundance data. Congruence between modeled parameters and field data for mite presence were observed for both WCM lineages although congruence between modeled thermal suitability and mite field abundance was observed only for MT-8. Thermal niche data for MT-1 and MT-8 provide biological insights and aid monitoring and management of WCM and the plant viruses it vectors. The presented models accurately estimate distributions of WCM and can be incorporated into management strategies for both current and predicted climate scenarios.

Object of the study is an evaluation of applied remedies at a process of decrement of failure of the thermal liquid collector by application of FMEA method. Remedies that lead into the minimisation of failures are proposed atier identification and evaluation of potentially failures.
