10. Long-Term Influences of Intergenerational Ambivalence on Midlife Parents' Psychological Well-Being

Abstract

We investigated changes in midlife parents' intergenerational ambivalence toward a focal child and its influence on their psychological well-being over 14 years, as the focal child moved from adolescence into young adulthood. We estimated growth curve models using three waves of data from the National Survey of Families and Households (N = 1,510 parents aged 35-54 years at Time 1). Parental ambivalence declined over time, equally among mothers and fathers. The prediction from ambivalence theory that children's attainment of adult statuses reduces parental ambivalence received only modest support. Only the focal child's marriage reduced parental ambivalence. The focal child's lifestyle--behavioral problems during adolescence still elevated ambivalence 14 years later, albeit less so. For its part, intergenerational ambivalence counteracted trends toward declining depressive symptoms and greater happiness for mothers and fathers alike, and its effects remained constant over time.

13. Physical Violence between Siblings: A Theoretical and Empirical Analysis

Abstract

This study develops and tests a theoretical model to explain sibling violence based on the feminist, conflict, and social learning theoretical perspectives and research in psychology and sociology. A multivariate analysis of data from 651 young adults generally supports hypotheses from all three theoretical perspectives. Males with brothers have significantly higher levels of sibling violence than the other three types of sibling pairs. As predicted, conflict and abuse between parents are associated with negative parent-child interactions, which in turn are related to problems in siblings' relationships with each other. All of these predict sibling violence.

Analyzed census and vital statistics for U.S. metropolitan areas in 1980 to investigate effects of mate availability, socioeconomic status and employment, public assistance, population size, and region on several aspects of family formation and family structure among African Americans. 18. A Methodological Review of the Sex Ratio: Alternatives for Comparative Research.

Used census data for U.S. metropolitan area African Americans to examine relationships of measures of sex ratio to each other and to indicators of family formation and family structure. Found that, when measures of sex ratio were properly formulated, they had strong associations with marriage prevalence; nonmarital fertility ratios; and prevalence of single-parent, female-headed families with young children. Abstract

We predict that manage Prevalence and husbands' education for Black women vary directly with mate availability. We also predict that marriage prevalence and husbands' education will be lower for Black women with less than a high school education data for other Black women. We test these predictions using data on marriage and husbands' education for a national sample of individuals and data on aggregate-level marriage prevalence and husbands' education for a sample of large metropolitan areas. Abstract

A study identified the structural predictors of African American marriage and family formation in nonmetropolitan counties in the Southern US from 1960 to 1990. Results found that higher sex ratios are related to a higher frequency of marriage for women, a higher frequency of husband-wife families, greater number of children residing in husband-wife families and greater number of marital births. The socioeconomic opportunities and status of men were positively related to the aforementioned variables while socioeconomic opportunities and status, levels of public assistance, and community size were negatively associated.

Abstract

Analaysis of data from Gallup Polls for 1976-88 indicates that nonsouthern evangelicals have become steadily more Republican over time, while southern evangelicals have not. Church attendance is associated with Republican preference only among evangelicals outside the South. These findings suggest the importance of examining how religion interacts with regional subculture to influence party preference and political attitudes.

Abstract

We build on a conflict theory of trust to investigate how ingroup bias and trust in ethnoracial groups are related to generalized trust. The theory may help explain Blacks' lower generalized trust, which is sometimes attributed to low trust of Whites. Combined data from the 2000 and 2004 American National Election Studies (N = 2,417) were analyzed. As predicted, ingroup bias undermined generalized trust, and ingroup trust boosted it. Unexpectedly, however, Blacks trusted Blacks and Whites about equally. Overall, trust in ethnoracial outgroups mattered more for generalized trust for Whites. The findings challenge the assumption that Blacks' lower generalized trust stems from low trust of Whites. They also indicate that a conflict theory of trust better explains trust for Whites. Abstract

The paradox that African Americans experience relatively good mental health despite being exposed to negative racial stereotypes and other stressors remains unexplained. The present study investigates the possibility that two dimensions of racial identity--ingroup closeness and ingroup evaluation--help explain these puzzling findings. African Americans' racial identity tends to be positive, and it is associated with higher self-esteem and mastery and a lower likelihood of depression. Using data from the Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiology Surveys (CPES), we show that African Americans who feel close to other African Americans and those who evaluate African Americans positively have greater self-esteem and mastery and a lower likelihood of depression and anxiety than whites. Without a positive racial identity, African Americans' mental health would be the same or worse than that of whites. We conclude that racial identity partly explains how African Americans enjoy relatively good mental health, despite greater exposure to negative racial stereotypes, discrimination, and other stressors. 39. Racial/Ethnic Identity and Subjective Well-Being among African Americans and Afro-Caribbeans.

Abstract

This study investigated how ethnicity and racia/ethnic identity were related to subjective well-being among Afro-Caribbeans and African Americans. Numerous studies have found that racial identity is related to better mental health and positive self-attitudes among African Americans, but little is known about how identities as Afro-Caribbeans or blacks influences subjective well-being for Afro-Caribbeans. Social identity theory would predict that identity would be beneficial for both groups, but it does not consider the different histories, cultures, and life experiences that underlie racial/ethnic identities for the two groups. Using data from the National Survey of American Life, we found that contrary to prediction, Afro-Caribbeans did not have higher subjective well-being than African Americans. Both groups mostly reported being "pretty happy," evaluated their lives highly on the Cantril life ladder, and rated their mental health as very good. As predicted, ingroup identity as African American or Afro-Caribbean benefited subjective well-being more consistently for African Americans than Afro-Caribbeans. In addition, identity as an Afro-Caribbean had significant associations with more dimensions of well-being than identity as a U.S. black did. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We test three models (Allen 1978) that imply, respectively, that African Americans (1) have a mental health advantage because they maintain stronger systems of social support than Whites; (2) have poorer mental health than Whites because they have smaller, less effective support systems; or (3) do not differ from Whites on mental health when socioeconomic status is controlled. We use data from the National Comorbidity Survey (Kessler et al. 1994) to address four questions: Does the structure of social relationships, as well as perceived supportiveness and strain from them, vary by race and gender? How does psychological functioning--psychological distress, mental disorder, and substance disorder--differ by race and gender? How do social relationships influence psychological functioning? Do social relationships influence the psychological functioning of African American and White men and women in different ways? The findings clearly contradict models (2) and (3), but do not strongly support model (1). With SES controlled, African Americans are advantaged on all three measures of psychological functioning, and the differences are not explained by differences in social integration and relationship quality. Conceptualizing and measuring the processes that are responsible for higher psychological functioning among African Americans is an important task for future research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

48. How Racial Identity Moderates the Impact of Financial Stress on Mental Health among African Americans

Abstract

Financial stress, which is common among African Americans, has been linked to higher psychological distress. This study examines whether racial identity moderates the association of financial stress with depressive symptoms. If so, through what mechanisms does it operate? We investigated these questions in a moderated mediation analysis, using data from the National Survey of American Life (N= 3,570). Of the two racial identity dimensions examined, positive group evaluation but not closeness to other African Americans was associated with less adverse effects of financial stress on depressive symptoms. In addition, we tested two mechanisms that could explain the buffering effect. Psychological resources (self-esteem and, less consistently, mastery), explained 26% to 46% of the buffering effects of racial identity; family support explained 8%. That is, positive group evaluations fortify African Americans in the face of hard times. They do so primarily through their association with a greater sense of self-worth.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between frequency of viewing television news and crime dramas, and adherence to an ideology of individualism. Attitudes toward women, blacks, and the poor were examined among members of these groups and among white males. Among women and blacks, exposure to television news increases group consciousness, while viewing crime dramas decreases personal efficacy. Among white males, we find an association between exposure to crime drama and endorsement of individual rather than structural causes of inequality. Television news, by contrast, fosters a belief that women's unequal status is due to structural sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
