Abstract

The moderating effects of urban-rural differences, anomie, Protestant ethic and higher order need strength on the relationship between job characteristic and satisfaction are examined in three diverse samples. Multiple linear regression is used to investigate the variance explained in satisfaction by the interactions between individual and job characteristics. The variance explained by the interactions, taken one at a time or as a group, was marginal and not consistent. A replication of Lawrence and Lorsch's (1967) findings of three modes of conflict resolution was attempted in a managerial sample. Various forms of factor analysis and rotation techniques did not yield a clear factor structure.
