1. AGN feeding along a one-armed spiral in NGC 4593: A study using ALMA CO(2-1) observations

Abstract

We investigate active galactic nuclei (AGN) feeding through the molecular gas (CO(2-1) emission) properties of the local Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4593, using Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) observations and other multi-wavelength data. Our study aims to understand the interplay between the AGN and the interstellar medium (ISM) in this galaxy, examining the role of the AGN in steering gas dynamics within its host galaxy, evaluating the energy injected into the ISM, and determining whether gas is inflowing or outflowing from the galaxy. After reducing the ALMA CO(2-1) images, we employed two models, 3D-Barolo and DISCFIT, to construct a disc model and fit its emission to the ALMA data. Additionally, we used photometric data to build a spectral energy distribution (SED) and applied the CIGALE code to derive key physical properties of the AGN and its host. Our analysis reveals a complex interplay within NGC 4593, including a clear rotational pattern, the influence of a non-axisymmetric bar potential, and a central molecular zone (CMZ)-like ring. We observe an outflow of CO(2-1) gas along the minor axis, at a distance of approximately 220 pc from the nucleus. The total molecular gas mass is estimated to be between $1 - 5 \times 10^8 \, M_{\odot}$, with non-circular motions contributing about 10\%. Our SED analysis indicates an AGN fraction of 0.88 and a star formation rate (SFR) of 0.42 $M_{\odot} \, \text{yr}^{-1}$. These findings highlight the complex dynamics in the centre of NGC 4593, which are significantly influenced by the presence of the AGN. Abstract

The 0-1 knapsack polyhedron as the most basic relaxation of a 0-1 integer program has attracted the attention of many researchers over the years. We present a very fast method that is guaranteed to generate one facet for the 0-1 knapsack polyhedron. Unlike lifting of cover inequities, our method does not require an initial minimal cover or a predetermined lifting sequencing, and its worst-case complexity is linear in some variables. Therefore, with minimal computational burden, it can be used to generate a potentially strong valid inequality based on any 0-1 relaxation of a general (Mixed) Integer Program (M)IP. Such valid inequalities can be added to the (M)IP problem prior to solving, or given their low computational cost, can be generated during solving the (M)IP, checked to see if they separate the incumbent fractional solution, and added to the problem if they do. Abstract

In this paper, we address the weighted multi-objective re-entrant owshop scheduling problem considering release dates in order to minimize makespan, total completion time, total tardiness, maximum idle time, and number of tardy jobs. Each job is taken into account with deterministic processing times, and release dates. The flow-shop comprised of two workshops in whose jobs are entered to the main workshop and after the first part of the processing, they are transferred to the second workshop and after this stage, the jobs are returned to the main workshop for the last part of the processing. We model the problem by a new mixed integer programming based on formulating sum of idle time as a new concept. Moreover, a hybrid evolutionary algorithm is proposed based on some dispatching rules, ant colony optimization, and genetic algorithm. The performance of the proposed algorithm on some test instances is compared to the mixed integer linear programming model as well as the state-of-the-art algorithms called genetic algorithm, tabu search, bio-geography based optimization, and artificial bee colony. The computational experiments show that our proposed approach outperforms other algorithms and the results indicate efficiency and capability of the proposed algorithm in comparison with the traditional algorithms. Abstract

As part of the Virgo Cluster Survey Tracing Ionised Gas Emission, a blind narrow-band H+[NII] imaging survey of the Virgo cluster carried out with MegaCam at the CFHT, we discovered eight massive (1010 . Mstar . 1011 M) lenticular galaxies with prominent ionised gas emission features in their inner (a few kiloparsec) regions. These features are either ionised gas filaments similar to those observed in cooling flows (two galaxies), or they are thin discs with sizes 0:7 . R(H) . 2:0 kpc (six galaxies), thus significantly smaller than those of the stellar disc (R(H) ' 7 22%Riso(r)). The morphological properties of these discs are similar to those of the dust seen in absorption in high-resolution HST images. Using a unique set of multifrequency data, including new or archival ASTROSAT/UVIT, GALEX, HST, CFHT, Spitzer, and Herschel imaging data, combined with IFU (MUSE, ALMA) and long-slit (SOAR) spectroscopy, we show that while the gas that is located within these inner discs is photoionised by young stars, which signals ongoing star formation, the gas in the filamentary structures is shock ionised. The star formation surface brightness of these discs is similar to that observed in late-type galaxies. Because of their reduced size, however, these lenticular galaxies are located below the main sequence of unperturbed or cluster star-forming systems. By comparing the dust masses measured from absorption maps in optical images, from the Balmer decrement, or estimated by fitting the UV-to-far-IR spectral energy distribution of the target galaxies, we confirm that the dust masses derived from optical attenuation maps are heavily underestimated because of geometrical eects due to the relative distribution of the absorbing dust and the emitting stars. We also show that these galaxies have gas-to-dust ratios of G=D ' 80320 30 , and that the star formation within these discs follows the Schmidt relation, but with an eciency that is reduced by a factor of 2.5. 17. COLLABORATIONS IN GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING: LESSONS FROM THE BALLINA BYPASS AND THE NATIONAL SOFT SOIL FIELD TESTING FACILITY

Abstract

Collaboration assists both academics and industry partners to achieve innovations, scientific advancement, and maintain technical competencies. The Ballina Bypass is used here to demonstrate collaboration via an Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage project on vacuum consolidation, and to discuss how the lessons learned from the Ballina Bypass led to establishing a national facility in Ballina to field test soft soils. The outcomes of the work at the field testing facility have been transferred back to the industry via an international numerical prediction symposium. The project background, roles, and responsibilities of researchers and industry members are discussed and explained, as are the innovative outcomes, stakeholder benefits, and cultural impacts.

Abstract

A modified 150 mm Rowe cell equipped with pore water pressure measurement was used to capture the flow relationship during vacuum-assisted radial consolidation. Based on the measured data, a radial consolidation model incorporating the effects of vacuum preloading is proposed, based on a non-linear relationship between the flow velocity and hydraulic gradient. The predictions of the proposed consolidation model are then compared with the predictions based on Hansbo's Darcian and non-Darcian models. The agreement between the proposed model and the measured data is shown, and the advantages of the proposed model compared with the existing models are discussed. An embankment case history taken from the reclamation project at the Port of Brisbane, Australia, was analysed, based on the current solution, and compared with the field measurements. Most animals and insects use opposing muscles, called flexors and extensors, to articulate the joints of their limbs. However, some spiders do not have extensors in some of their joints and use, instead, a simple and efficient miniaturized hydraulic system to extend their limbs. An actuator inspired by the hydraulic system of spiders, which can be embedded on adaptive structures, is investigated in robot-like configurations in this paper. Its design and characteristics are discussed and the effects of the geometrical parameters on its performance are investigated.

Abstract

As part of the VESTIGE survey, a blind narrow-band Ha+[NII] imaging survey of the Virgo cluster carried out with MegaCam at the CFHT, we discovered 8 massive lenticular galaxies with prominent ionised gas emission features in their inner (few kpc) regions. 37. Platelet-rich plasma in the management of Asherman's syndrome: An RCT.

Abstract

Background: Asherman's syndrome (AS) is a rare reproductive abnormality, resulting in endometrial collapse due to aggressive or recurrent endometritis and/or curettage., Objective: We aimed to assess the effectiveness of using platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to lower the recurrence rate of intrauterine adhesions (IUAs) following hysteroscopy., Materials and Methods: In this non-randomized clinical trial, women aged 20-45 years with AS diagnosed by sonohysterography, 3D sonography, hysteroscopy, or uterosalpingography between May 2018 and September 2018 were included. Participants (n = 30) were divided into case and control groups. Following hysteroscopic adhesiolysis, a Foley catheter was placed into the uterine cavity in all women. After two days, the catheter was removed, and 1-mL PRP was injected into the uterine cavity of women in the PRP (case) group, while the control received no PRP. All controls and subjects underwent diagnostic hysteroscopy 8-10 weeks following the intervention to assess the IUAs according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine scoring system., Results: Our results did not reveal any significant difference in the menstrual pattern of either the control or test groups before or after treatment (p = 0.2). Moreover, the IUA stage in both studied groups before and after treatment was similar (p = 0.2). The duration of menstrual bleeding in both studied groups before and after treatment was also similar., Conclusion: PRP cannot change the menstrual pattern or development of postsurgical AS, as evaluated by follow-up hysteroscopy., Competing Interests: The authors have no financial or nonfinancial conflicts of interest., (Copyright © 2020 Javaheri et al.)
